In Benin City, market women don't buy on flat rate per kg. 1kg fish is about N400 and non of them is ready to buy N1 higher. I've been monitoring price since October and its been the same.

Is this same in other region of the country?

Pls share the selling price in your region

N400 angry shocked Bro, are u sure?
Not d same every where. In Lagos at d moment, 1kg fish is between N500 and N550. It has been at dat price since december. If u av good bargaining power and ur fishes are big, u can even sell at more dan N550.

I assumed, will have to change water twice a week, for 4 months. buying a tanker of water every month. IS the cost of feeding the fishes correct?

It might not be economical to consider buying water all the time. This will be adding terribly to ur cost of production. Sometimes u might need to change water more than twice a week depending on ur discretion as a farmer. Also consider d fact dat u are now placing urself at d mercy of the water tanker drivers. I dont think u should follow diz path sir.

so far in this forum, i have learnt the dept of a standard pond shld be btw 4 to 6 feet, bt 2day, i saw a pond of dept of 8feet. The lenght shld be abt 15ft. Do you think this shld.have adverse effect on the fish? The owner changes the water 3 times in 3 months and he is making good profit on the fish.

Its better to have a wide surface area than extreme depth. Personally i think 8ft depth is too much. Might even be dangerous to be around such depths if adequate precautions are not put in place.
The lenght doesnt have to be limited to 15ft, it can be much longer. Mine is 22ft lenght.
Changing water 3 times in 3months? Are u sure u got him right? Well maybe he has very few fishes in a very big pond but even at dat, d water will be polluted and stale.
I read somewhere dat u said he harvests at 8months. Dats so long. U can achieve same results in much shorter duration and hence increase ur turn over and profits.

Compliments of the season to everyone in the house. Gurus in the house, I ve questions awaiting your professional answers:
1.Hw many kg/bags of floating and local feed should one feed his fish e.g 500pieces from juvenile-table size?
2.Is there any particular quantity to feed them daily?
3.Hw can one calculate their average body weight using the kg of feed they've consumed?
4.Hw many pieces can one stock in a 15 by 8 concrete pond to table size?

Just budget approximately N230 to feed each fish to maturity. It will give u a vague idea of d number of bags of feed u will buy and d amount u will spend in feeding. Most feed come in 15kg bags.

For feeding, feed dem till satiation 2 - 3 times daily depending on d stage of fish. Another method is to calculate d feed per average body weight of ur fish. Save urself d stress and just feed till satiation.

For d average body weight of ur fish, u do random sampling. Pick out some fishes frm ur pond and weigh dem; about 10fishes. D weight u get will be divided by d number of fishes u picked. Dats like d average weight of ur fish.

For 15×8 pond, depending on d depth of d pond u can stock 800+ adult fishes.
Try not to over stock ur ponds coz d fishes will do poorly.

or dt u have been on honeymoon since cos d disappearance started shortly after you got married.

Anyway, i noticed that your earthen ponds have water in and out. how often do u change water in an earthen pond? Can one use borehole as source of water for earthen pond?

My friend is moving into his house. It is a very big plot and he intends to start his fish pond latest by feb. How wil he solve the challenge of drainage for the pond? The land is sloped inward- to the inside. The area has no drainage constructed and cos of the sloppy terain, he is scared dt water may spoilt ppl's property if he sends it outside.

Kindly assist with solution.

He should not just let out water onto the street with out properly channeling it to a good gutter. People in the area can petition the local/state govt if he messes up the neighbourhood with waste water. As ur frnd rightly thought, damaging peoples' properties wt waste water is not an option.

As per d earthen pond, is d soil in ur frnd's area capable of retaining water? Depending on the type of earthen pond, u might not need to change water at all, some u might change monthly and others more frequently. Some u just top up with water.

FISH FARMING WITHOUT TEARS

-Liaise with other farmers and try to get as many contacts as possible of fish buyers before harvest time.

-Different fish buyers have different sizes of fish they buy. Get the contacts of buyers for all the sizes.

-Do not drain water completely in your fish pond before negotiation with ur buyers.

-Be friendly with your fish buyers but at the same time strict. It's a business you are running and not a charitable organisation.

- Even if you are desperate to sell off your fishes, pretend you are not desperate to sell. Your body language tells a lot, so comport yourself in the presence of your buyers.

- Always have some fish feed on stand-by (enough feed to feed your fishes for a week) during harvest because your buyers might disappoint you and you will need to keep feeding your fishes till you get another serious buyer.

-Do not be intimidated by the prices the buyers are offering... Its your fish and if you decide you don't want to sell at the price the buyers offer, they won't kill you.

-About a week to sales, decide on the prices of your fishes and stick at that price during negotiations.

-As a guide, do not sell fishes above 1kg for less than N500 per kilo (prices can fluctuate but try not to go below this).

-Always use your own weighing scale when selling. The fish buyer can confirm with their own scale if they want.

-Do not sell on credit, but partial credit can be given to long time customer who has a guaranteed reputation with you and you know the person's shop or market stall.

-Your eyes must be on the weighing scale at all times; you cannot be the one packing the fish from the pond and at the dame time watching and recording the weight on scale.

-Get at least one other person to assist you during sales. Do not ever be alone when making sales in large quantity. The fish buyers have a natural tendency to cheat.

-If your sales are going to run into hundreds of thousands of naira, encourage payment into your account rather than deal with cash... It would be sad if the senior ogas of the night come and take their share.
It means that you should have an idea of your expected harvest in kg & price range.

-Even if you don't sell hundreds of thousands, try not to be in the habit keeping large sums of money in the house after sales.

Happy sales my people and a very wonderful New Year. - - BELEXY

This post is not to launch a smear campaign on the agency, but just to contribute my quota in warning other mothers out there.

So I was introduced to the agency by a family member, with the hope that the agency would have properly trained nannies and proper vetting would be done on the nannies. I chose to go with an agency that claims to train and properly vet their nannies even to the extent of ensuring the nannies provide guarantors, since all those small girls from upcountry have plenty wahala; and a motherly nanny who has had children is always a best fit anyday.

We kuku registered with the agency (N15,000) and were told it would take 2weeks to get prospects that i would interview......

...... They will just collect your money and never provide the service paid for with the care and dilligence expected.

You should name the agency and where its located if u really want to help people. With this thread u av only told a 'story' and alot of people can still fall into the trap of this so-called nanny agency bcoz dey dnt even knw which one it is.

Are u sure of d dimension of d pond? It cant be d right dimension sir. 120ft by 60ft is a full plot of land!
If ur source feeds d juveniles well and dey attain d same size as d previous ones u stocked, YES you can add dem. I av done such several times wtout consequences. Its just like u sorted dem and added dem to another pond.

#sort out the dimension of ur pond first and dnt over stock d fishes. Its better to av 500 fishes dat will grow very well dan to av 1000 fishes with stunted growth.

I really acknowledge and appreciate the considerable time and effort you put in helping people on the thread. They are immeasurable.
Having said that I will like to point out some disturbing trend i notice. Those who come here to learn rely on whatever info that's shared and most are putting in lots of cash, some even use loan or retirement benefits. in as much as you disseminate info, its pertinent not to give info you aren't sure of because the end is disaster. How can you argue out that sludge can be of useful value to fish feed? Sludge is sludge and it has no other definition. Its like feeding 2months fishes with PKC. The end will be disaster. Do you even know why oil is added to fish feed atall? Which oil processing company will leave its palm oil inside the sludge? NONE unless you owe the coy because its a loss, its like saying palm kernel processing coys allows considerable oil inside pkc. You also saying you can add 10l of sludge to 100kg of feed!!!! Where is that practised? Even the recommend oil which is fish oil, its half a litre. even when during pelleting, you can not add 2 litre of water. Hmmmm

I'm not trying to spoil your show here because you are one of the top contributors on the thread and sincerely, you have put in lots of effort. As you can see, I do not interfere with your show on here as the last time I was here was around 5 months ago.I just mistakenly stumble on the thread again 3 days ago. Cat fish farming has gone from that level you are operating and people are really looking forward to cash out considerable sum after 5 or 6 months. Who will want to raise 2000 pcs of fish and at the end of 5 months get a profit of 100k or less!! What kind of income is that considering the stress, resources and time put in.

We are all learners in an open forum like this but we should be mindful of the kind of suggestion we dole out because some1 savings is involved. Thank you

I respect ur contributions too. I av said my piece. Palm oil sludge has some oil in it! U can even get it free or at a ridiculously cheap rate frm local processors. It gives weight and it has been used successfully. If u dnt knw how its used, u can ASK and LEARN and stop sounding like u know it all. Nobody knows it all and innovative ways are springing up all d time. Even the blood meal u condemned has ways of using it and even POULTRY droppings as ingredients in fish feed. ITS ALL ABT MINIMISING UR COST PRICE. I wonder wat LEVEL u assume i am operating on dat u are telling me such.
Nobody said anything abt fingerlings/juveniles here. Do u add maize to fish feed for two month old fishes? Answer is NO if it can be avoided. SO why will someone add palmoil sludge to fish feed for fingerlings/juveniles.
I rest my case and will not respond to comments abt diz palmoil sludge again.

@belexy,thanks alot. the tanks are these white industrial toll tanks.pls with the stock you advised,at what level should i keep the water, the tank is graded 100,200,300 till 1000l.thanks

Feel it up as much as d tank will take wtout it over flowing or d fishes coming out over d edge easily. 1000L tank is small and wont take more dan a maximum of 150 adult fishes.
Instead of buying 10 tanks which are expensive, why not use the money to construct wooden tarpaulin ponds. It will cost u less and u will be able to accommodate more fishes.

We all have definition of fantastic, so I won't sweat that out with you. Lol..how can a substitute which is 94% water give a fantastic result? Funny. Well for those for want to know..mollases or palm oil is a better substitute to fish oil. They are both cheaper too. Molases is 30naira per litre and 1 litre to 100kg of fish feed is fantastic.

Now u know and u av learnt. Palm oil sludge doesnt av to be full of water if u knw wat to get.

Oga Belexy thanks for the knowledge you've been sharing. I beg to disagree with the above quote, 10ltr of palm oil sludge or any liquid substance to 100kg feed will be too much. The feed will be too watery even for the peleting machine.

There are ways to do it.... Wen u request for palm oil sludge, get d one with as little water as possible. SLUDGE.... dats d key word.
I repeat, it has worked fantastically!

They are ingredients but not good for fishes. Doesn't give optimum growth and makes fishes prone to diseases. So don't encourage it. There are better substitutes

By palm oil sludge do you mean the effluent? POME? It contains just 1% oil and over 94% of water oooo..why not use palm oil itself?

Pple av used dem as ingredients with fantastic results. Palm oil is expensive and dats d reason why palm oil sludge is used. 10L in 100kg feed is ideal.

I was discussing wit my neighbour dt works in brewery and some how, an info dropped.
He told me their coy sells spent grains to farmers and the price is quite cheap. He told me d farmer must have a registered farm and have certificate from ministry of environment.
I tot it must be pig farmers dt buy such. sumhow in my dream yesternight, i saw my younger brother has a fishery. The fishes were so big dt they hardly move their body. I asked him.wt he feed them and he showed me sumtin dt looks like local feed. In dt feed, i saw sumtin dt looks like dawa. I feel its a message dt was passed to me in dt dream.

@local feed experts, can spent grain from brewery be used in local feed manufacture?

Reason why u dreamt abt brewery waste was bcoz u were talking about it earlier in d day. I dont think theres anything divine about dat.
YES, brewery dry waste can be incorporated into fish feed. People use it.

I am not based in Nigerian, but I am willing to share my own idea on way forward for the fisherman and also can support with inputs on how things should be done.
I am totally sad and unhappy with the way catfish farmer are unable to unite having one voice, one price in selling out fish per kg. They just made the fisher seller extra rich while the farmers doing all the extra work e.g buying fish feed, changing water, petrol and so on and so forth, before the fish attains a table size to be sold and fish women will giving you the supplier (The farmer) rate to sell your product all because you want to sell or in need of Money… Imagine them iya elja buying fish for N450 from you and selling at the rate of N1000 or N1500 then who has profit in the business?
To what I was I told they don’t buy feeds to feed the fish from the moments they left your farm to sell and you have to do the math how much you spent in 4-5 months and how much you gain at harvest.
Enough of my story I think the fish farmers needs to be educated and give support to most of them who are not financially stable so they won’t sell their stocks at giveaway price.
I am willing to work with any committed Nigerian to make changes in creating a very strong and accessible platform for the fish farmers to have a fixed price so they can enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Solution: is creating a Database Platform to have all fisherman on which information can be easily passed around to their mobile phones or email to keep them alert and update on lock up price to sell fish per kg this will bring more profits to fish farmer pockets and eradicates the Iya elaja from cheating on local farmers.
This is just my opinion and supports. All the farmers needs is one Voice

Note: Not sure if any one reading this can be helpful to send me business plan on fruits imporation to Lagos .

On a second thought we have this thread and also Agricnetwork which I just noticed you are the MOD in the fish section, of which u can solve problem amongst fish farmers and foster unity with these mediums other than having your own faction. Let's be open to problem solving where people can read and re-read overtime.

Which faction? undecided undecided undecided plz if u dont understand wat we are trying to achieve, dnt jump to conclusions. Its very unethical.
Just so u know, theres a difference between an association and an online forum.
By d wat, It wasnt made compulsory for u to join the whatsapp grp bro. People that are in the group are happy with wat we are trying to achieve.
Point of correction, its not 'my own faction' and i dont av a 'faction'.
# There are different routes to the market.... The point is to get to dat market. Do u think its every fish farmer dat is on Nairaland all d time? Besides, everything dat is being done is in collaboration with agricnetwork and also robonski.

Hello all, just a little update on whats going on.
The whatsapp group has proposed to form a NATIONAL ASSOCIATION for fish farmers. We deliberated, argued, proposed different names and finally voted between this two names for the association:

(1) NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FISH FARMERS (NAFF)

(2) GRASSROOT FISH FARMERS ASSOCIATION(GROFFA)

At the end of the day, NAFF was chosen by the members.
Next point of action is to register the association with CAC ( both names will be presented to CAC with NAFF being our preferred choice) and to come up with a website.

The whatsapp group is still active. . . Plz send a whatsapp msg to this number: 08023000802 If u wanna join the Fish Farming whatsapp group. Thanks.

Some of the 30 fishes I separated for use as broodstock are showing good prospect. On weighing them yesterday we had 1.8 kg, 1.5 kg and 1kg and they completed 4 months yesterday. This is really surprising.. about 5 of them weight 1.8 kg we were experimenting with floating food only.. coppen and i can now confirm that it is almost possible to have more than 1 kg fish between 4 to 5 months without local feeds.

Great news... Yeah its definitely possible to get 1kg fish wth floating feed in 4months + Not only Coppens... Even with only Vital Feed bcoz i av also used it.

#but i prefer the local sinking feed now coz u can manipulate the ingredients to ur desire.
