For a 15ft by 15ft pond, u will need to laminate or glue d tarpaulin. U cant sew tarpaulin or else it will leak.
The longest width of tarpaulin easily available is the16ft one. Dat 16ft will serve as ur width and height so construct ur pond bearing in mind dat size of tarpaulin. Meaning dat d pond can be as long as u want (24ft for instance) but it shd be a maximum of 8ft wide and 3.5ft deep if u dnt want to laminate/glue d tarpaulin. As my Oga Robonski said, u can get it at mushin or iyana-ipaja. I had a bad experience at iyana ipaja wen i went to buy tarpaulin some months ago and still ended up foing to mushin for it, so for me Its mushin i prefer now

Good morning all. I also want to know how many fish can be accommodated in a 40ft by 50ft earthen pond. I stocked it with about 3,500 jumbo fishes that will be harvested at melange stage. Have I under stocked the pond? I want to know the likely number when I will be re stocking to maximize the use of the pond. I shall try and paste a pic of the pond. Thanks.

Im assuming its 3ft depth.
For that size of earthen pond it shd take 4000 full grown table size fish. For melange (below 500g), d number can be doubled. Wen u understock, ur fishes do much more better.

Abt 1500 fishes harvested monthly or 7500 fishes harvested at 5months. If all goes well wt d farm and fishes, diz will give u more dan 200K monthly.

#making money is not definite unlike ur fixed paid job. Sometimes there can be huge loss of stock, bad sales etc and atimes u can make more than 100% profit..

He has a fairly well paid job; though very hectic. Saturday and sunday are not issues bcoz in my profession saturdays, sundays and public holidays are not work-free depending on the duty rooster and the unit i am in at d time.

As i said, it depends on so many factors. Can his farm meet up wt wat he is being paid now? Does he av a dedicated land for the farm? Wats d capacity of his fish farm now?

A good advice cant really be given bcoz there are no details of his current job and his farm.

If for instance he works 9am to 5pm and is earning just like 30K and theres no hope for promotion or he sees no future in his current job etc and maybe his fish farm is generating much more dan dat and he has the opportunity to expand if he focuses fully on it, then ur guess is as good as mine on what to do. Dats just an illustration. As i said, we need details before any good advice can be given.

Note dat fish farming is not an automatic money spinning business. I keep on saying this. Dnt get carried away by eBoooks and blogs dat claim u can make millions instantly. If it was dat easy to make the millions, those guys will not be aggressively trying to sell their eBooks bcoz dey will be damn too busy making the so called millions on their farms.

#im not saying u cant make good money frm fish farming, but its not child's play. It requires alot of sacrifice and patience and hard work.

Though he said that with a clause. That the most lose in fish is not greater than 15%.

The most loss is not 15% but rather 100%. U can lose the whole stock sef. It can happen but God forbid such bad luck happens. I have lost a thousand fishes within 1 week due to disease outbreak. If at all he wants to gain anything, it will be on ur fish feed since u are not feeding ur fishes urself. This are just assumptions im making, lets give d man d benefit of d doubt; he might actually be a very honest straight forward man and dat 15% mortality he quoted might be taking into consideration so many other factors.
Is there any particular reason why u dnt want to take an active role in managing ur farm?

one more thing, he is giving me more 100 juvenile, he said the usual practice is customers get 50 fish per 1000 so you get 1050 instead of 1000, now he will give me 2100 juvenile fish instead of 2000.

Dats damn too much. Moreso, u are stocking juveniles which are now more stable. Definitely u will loose some fish but definitely not 15% unless theres a disease out break or so. 15% of ur 2000 fishes is 300 fishes if na me and i hear dat, i will run abeg. Another thing, u said, he doesn't change his own fish water on time, they look dirty but they are doing well. Well d water might look 'dirty', doesnt mean its polluted. If u use vital feed or even local feed, it colours d water. Doesnt mean its 'dirty'. Try and find out the exact price of ziegler.

#since u are around, i think u shd take a more active role in managing ur pond. Dnt leave everything to d man. Theres nothing as good as running ur business urself and at d same time u will learn alot.

#and as i always say, profit is not automatic, instant and definite in fish farming so dont get to carried away by wat d man might have told u.

#i wish u success and God's favour in this endeavour. U will come back here wt beautiful inspiring stories.

The minimum profit could be ZERO profit.
Its important you should knw dat fish farming is not an automatic instant money spinning business. Its possible for someone to dive in and come out wt fingers seriously burnt. Tread carefully, expand gradually, understand the market in ur area, minimise cost, and overall learn frm other fish farmers. Develope a passion for fish farming and dnt focus on d 'expected millions' and u wont fail.

Yes you can . i also had some of my fatteners on free range some time ago. i know some farmers who do.

Pigs arent dangerous, they are emotional animals and freely.

Ensure you have a nice shade for them to hide when its sunny and clean water.

There are alot of feed to choose frm and dey are all good. Coppens at d moment seem to av some fake in d market so u might wanna be careful wt dat.
You av Ziegler, multifeed, vital, Aqua, Biomar, Top feed etc.
One of d cheapest is Vital and Top feed but i wud rather go for Vital feed coz d crude protein is higher.
Vital cost between N4200 - N4300 per 15kg bag now.
Multifeed is abt N4600 (i also like multifeed)
Top feed abt N3800
Aqua abt N5000
Coppens between N5200 - N5400

the source of water is borehole and there is a manageable drainage but how about treatment n fertilization?

Manageable drainage might lead to problems wen u start. You shd really look into it.
You dnt need any treatment or fertilization of tarpaulin pond (buy signboard tarpaulin, it doesnt come wt chemicals like some others).
Wash d tarpaulin well, fill with water and leave for a few days. Drain dat off and fill wt d water u will stock ur fingerlings.

Budget abt 250K for ur 1000 fishes.
You dnt need drugs if ur fingerlings are not sick and if u maintain good water mgt.
You can thoroughly wash ur tank and use salt or use Robonski's favourite: Blagdon anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

You cant buy it, it has to be constructed for u on ur farm. Check my post above for range of prices. It depends on type of wood, method of construction, type of tarpaulin etc.

Just a quick question: are fully grown pigs dangerous animals? I want to get abt four piglets and let them roam in my compound wt out cages/pen till adulthood and ready for slaughter. This are just for personal/family consumption and not business. Would my family be safe? My compound is quite large.

I came across this thread some days ago and i have bn reading thru since. I actually want to go into integrated farming but i have to start somewhere right? so i have been getting some info about fish farming but i need a form of feasibility study/ detail analysis(prices n cost) for stocking 1000 juveniles to table size, using wooden frame tapoline and a proposal format. Can the Pros in the hhouse pls take some time off their busy schedule to help me? Thanks.

Price of juveniles will range frm N20 - N30 depending on who is selling to you and location. Most times you get it for N25 per one.
For feeding: budget N230 per fish till table size.
Wooden frame tarpaulin pond of 28ft×8ft×3.5ft will take ur 1000 adult fishes (dats d size i use).
You will need a second pond of say 12 ×6×3.5 to sort. With this two ponds, ur fishes will av excess space and will grow really well.
Depending on the type of wood you use for ur wooden pond it will cost u between 60K - 100K (for the big sized pond) for a completed ready to stock tarpaulin pond.
Before you start consider your water source and drainage. Very important.

Wat i meant is dat he adds hot water to d water already in his vat just so dat the over all temperature in d vat increases a bit. Just like using a water heater. It works if d person knows how to do it well. He will add the hot water to d prepared vat before he spawns. The temperature of d vat will not be hot oh, if not he will lose all his eggs... Its just like leaving d water on a sunny day.
He shdnt try diz method if he doesnt knw how to do it oh... .

****Its better he follows ur own advice of covering d vat or using lamps. Its much safer!

Hatch indoors and u can slightly warm d water by pouring in hot water before u place in ur fertilized eggs. Becareful so u dnt boil ur eggs oh The warm water needs to be evenly distributed.
If u are in d south west, you shdnt av much issues wt temperature for spawning but try to do it wen u anticipate a sunny day.

Non for now, the ones i know of av all been taken. My area is at Ikotun - Igando axis.
If u are very serious abt renting ponds, i can make some enquires but might not be in ikotun area.

Also stylishly try and find out the reason why d ponds are not being used by d owner and if there are any issues. Be very observant and try to notice things around d pond. Ask to see drainage and where it leads to, water supply etc
If its 20K per annum, den its cheap coz in my area its between 30K to 50K per annum for a similar pond dat will take d number of fishes u mentioned.
