Pls multifeed, vitafeed, chi which one is preferable? Those that have used them pls advice me. Thanks

U will get ur desired results with either multifeed or vital feed if u av stocked good fingerlings; ur fingerlings and farm mgt matter alot. Both feeds are very good. Cost wise, vital feed is cheaper then multifeed. I will even recommend you use Top Feed, its cheaper than multifeed or vital feed and at d same time also a good feed.

guys, if I raise catfish for 4 months what size should i be expecting and if i raise for 6 months what size would i be expecting ?

Nobody can honestly answer dat question. Alot of factors need to be considered : fingerlings, your water mgt, feeding, type of feed, farm practices and sheer good luck etc. Fish farming is not 2 + 2 = 4.

U can raise catfish for 6months and still be getting 800g fishes. All things being equal, at 4months u shd hit 1kg fishes and at 6 months u are looking at above 2kg- 3kgfishes. This is not a definite answer coz nobody is God and can tell u how d fish will grow or what size they will hit at a particular time or at harvest.

#u can get some fishes to be 1kg at 3 and a half months frm fingerlings

Not true.. . Based on my experience, if dey av a good start frm fingerlings/juveniles, at 3months and above is wen dey add d most weight and increase in size at tremendous rates while consuming less feed as dey approach 4/5months.

I have about 30 (male and female) pieces of broadstock I have been nurturing for close to a year. I am afraid that even with all the attention and right feeding I have been giving them they are only between 0.65kg and 1.1kg. Does the house think they will give a good yield if used for spawning? Please advice!

Close to a year and they are just 0.65 - 1.1kg? shocked
Bro, dey are not a good stock for broodstock at all. Im not saying ur broodstock shd be fat bcoz ideally dey shdnt be since dey are broodstock but those fish u av dat av so slow growth are d kind of fishes someone will use to hatch and d person will be strugling to get 1kg at 6months frm fingerlings stage.
When u are selecting fish to breed for broodstock, select only d fish with d best physical qualities and u will end up wt fries of good quality. Same practices u employ when selecting parent stocks of other livestock shd also be employed in fishery if u want the best.
Genetics av alot to play wen selecting ur broodstock.

@Mercylicious, am fine. am happy at your testimony about you fishes doing well. When you start on large scale, you will know how to manage them. Well done.

Mine too are doing pretty well and are pretty big now, they will be two months by 28. Tempted to sell them at melange sizes but hmmm will wait two months when they will be five months.

My challenges are with the guy. He is greedy. I give him money to buy feed but he does not buy. I gave him 54k for 10bags last month he only bought five, I gave him 50k this month he has only bought 4bags. Telling me lies. He has used Zeigler, multi feed and crown feed against my wish(told I him want Zeigler) . Crown feed is even 9mm he bought, some picked and other struggle to pick n never succeeded. Giving me stupid excuses. I know well has eaten my money. Will never give him my money, buying my feed myself next time. Only to pay him for labor and fuel.

Find a solution to that feed/guy problem as a matter of urgency or u will end up wt fishes wt stunted growth. If u buy d feed urself, is he d one dat will be feeding them?
Wats d average weight of ur fish now?

GOOD NEWS TO PRACTICING AND PROSPECTIVE FARMERS!!!!

For practicing farmers (fish farmers), it is no news that the price of both local and imported floating feeds keeps sky rocketing on a daily basis( an average of N350-N450/kg) which means a farmers cost of production is getting high on the daily basis but the same can not be said about the cost of fish per kilo at the farm gate as the price remains at an average of what it has been in the last decade (i.e N350-N400 for melange and N480-N550),

Mean while the cost of feed accounts for about 80% of a farmers expenses on each stock, therefore it becomes difficult for an average farmer to make profit (if not run at lost) with the feed price situation. The cost of production is getting high every day but the selling price of fresh fish per kilo at the farm gate remains what it used to be.

Also the price of feed material for pelleting local sinking feeds are also getting high everyday but one can still make quality and cheap feed when compared in terms of price to the local floating and imported feeds.Although locally pelleted sinking feeds are not as effective like the local and imported floating feeds and thus they do not give good results like the floating feeds in the area of water management, digestibility, palatability and nutrition.

But what makes the almighty floating local and imported feeds so effective and achieve all the said results? They are able to achieve these results because they float and they are steamed cooked at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius which is the reason why they are nutritious, palatable, have great water stability and are easily digested by the fishes. These factors are very essential for a fish farm to be successful and well managed.

Here is the good news!! At RUYEMCO FEED MILL we have quality locally made floating fish feeds that is highly nutritious ,palatable and with good water stability. Materials are locally sourced from good source and steamed cooked before they are extruded to pellets sizes ranging from 1mm- 8mm available at an affordable prices ranging from an average of N240/kg. Also available at RUYEMCO FEED MILL is sales of feed materials and concentrates for fish farming, piggery and poultry. Also we do pelleting/extruding service of floating fish feeds for farmers who have their own special almighty formula for their fish farming practice.

Delivery also available within the south south and south west region of the country for now. Contact Michael on 08167488947 or 09095720991 for more information and order inquiries.

majority of the hatchers lie a whole lot about age and co, this debate has been ongoing for a long period of time. How can all fishes in six weeks suddenly becomes fingerlings, its only the gullible buyers that will believe such info. At least at the 8th week and above they are ripe enough to be called fingerlings that can pick 2mm without hassles. U cannot get a standard juvenile that will pick 3mm at the 7th week, haba!!! at the 12th week from hatchery all the fishes should be ready to be sold as juvenile..

Thanks.... Yeah there are so many untrustworthy pple out there. Although most of them are ignorant and genuinly dnt knw d right thing. We need to enlighten farmers so they dnt fall for such malpractices.

experts answer, how many weeks are fingerlings or juveniles? d feed size, which feed brand is d standard use?

This issue of age and size as per fingerlings and juveniles is really confusing and alot of hatchers seem to confuse eachother. I also need some clarification on this. For instance some hatchers will say fishes of 6weeks dat are very big will be sorted frm d pack of fingerlings and sold as post-fingerlings while its siblings are still refered to as fingerlings bcoz dey are smaller in size. Is, this right? Shd those fishes rightly be called post-fingerlings bcoz they are bigger dan d rest of d other fingerlings but yet just 6weeks old?
Same thing happens with juveniles too. Just bcoz dey are bigger than the rest and look like d size of actual juveniles, dey call dem juveniles despite their young age of say 7weeks.
I need some clarification on this bcoz in my opinion, its not right.
#i dnt think we will call a short adult man of 30yrs a juvenile just because he is short and looks like a juvenile.

Any tip on how to take care of the bruises? He said others might likely eat them but am not OK with that.

Seperate the bruised ones and keep dem in a seperate pond or tank to heal if d bruises are not much. If d bruises are much, just kill, cook and eat them or dey will eventually die in d pond.
If u leave dem with the other fishes, dey will be killed and eaten by them. Fishes go after anytin dat smells of blood.

Hello every member or guest of Agricnetwork forum, what am about to say must be said. Most of us fishfarmers might know it, while most of us shy away from it. This write up might help most intending farmers from buying experience with their hard earned money.

The most asked question is, if fish farming is so Lucrative why do people still loose their money. My people indeed its lucrative, but before you reap the gain you must pay your dues there are no short cut.

Most people if not all hopes that after 5-6months of stocking 2,000 fingerlings/Juveniles, they will achieve 2tonnes(2,000kg) which the equivalent in naira is #500 per kilo, #500 x 2,000kg = #1,000,000. Lets go abit further to calculate the cost of feeding, medication, logistics etc. 2,000 fishes will consume feed worth of btw #230-#250 each till harvest(Table Size), thats about #460,000-#500,000. Cost of 2,000 fingerlings/Juveniles will cost btw #15-#30 each (#30,000-#60,000). In summary total expensis be set @ #600,000 to achieve #1million naira. Thats not a bad business forecast.

Honestly, the major question is how many people achieve this amazing result. I will say only but a few, not lucky people but smart people. How can one learn to be a smart catfish farmer. Thats the million box question. I will summarize few steps below; How to become a smart fish farmer:
- Be Patient
- Dont be greedy
- Employ a consultant
- Seek God direction.

Be patient: Dont be in a hurry to cash in millions, thereby clouding your sense of Judgement. There is no easy route to success. Follow due process, prepare your pond properly, treat your pond properly, secure your pond properly.

Dont be greedy: Please as a new catfish farmer, without the aid of a trusted, experience, successful fish farmer as a consultant. Dont stock 12,000 fingerlings/Juveniles in a bid to get 12tonnes (12,000kg) which is an equivalent of #6,000,000.

Employ a consultant: Seek the services of a trusted, experience, successful fish farmer, directly or indirectly as a consultant. Please dont think you have read enough journals or attended enough seminars to avoid buying experience with your money. What you might offer a consultant wont be compared to what you might loose in the long run.

Seek God: Pray to God for directions, with God impossible is nothing.

In Conclusion, I will like to say seeds (Fingerlings,Juveniles,Jumbo) are the source of success or failure in catfish farming. Happy fish farming. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for your help

You dnt need to lime and fertilize in tarpaulin ponds. Just make sure ur tarpaulin is washed and free of any chemicals it came with. I use signboard tarpaulin, its chemical free and u can stock ur fishes almost immediately.

As per the biodisc, im not a believer in dat. #just my personal opinion

Yes, with or without education a person can succeed in fish farming but d educated ones are at an advantage and if the person is science (biology, agric etc) oriented he will succeed even much more better.

Increase in price of fish feed is biting everyone. I am also feeling it here. Even the local feed ingredients have increase in prices too.
As farmers, we need to be more united in setting a minimum price of fish per kilo. Farmers should top selling fish for less than N500 per kilo. U aint doing urself any favour and u are spoiling d market for other fish farmers.
