helinues: Please explain to us how will you tax Agbero Ashewo, the road side seller, hawkers? Every agbero in lagos pays dues , if you think it's a lie ,go and start agbero work tomorrow and see what the location you choose will ask you for before you can start work ,the firs is obviously going to copy the lagos template, most states already have database of market people as they have unions ,even ashewo get union so it's not a hard thing to tax them . You will be surprised when the tax regime starts how many people it will get to start paying tax . |

What are your thoughts on the proposed tax reforms? Do you believe they will aid development or just increase hardship? First of all have you the Op read the tax laws to be implemented? Many taxes that make cost of production high in Nigeria are going to be deleted. Before anyone jumps into conclusions let's wait and see the tax reform activated first. |

erniok2: Vote buying is always for personal gain especially for the sellers and that's in no way politics. But lobbying is different and that's why in US, those that win swing states lobbied them with what they can/will do for them. Both are the same , the nomenclature are just different, the politicians in the usa lobby for votes by offering delegates something other than money. Inn Africa delegates sell their votes for money ,shikena there is no difference Both are the same |

erniok2: This is more like politicking than vote buying. Vote buying is for personal gain unlike community gain. You are still coming to ,you point ,vote buying in Africa should be tied to community development, a delegate is representing a larger caucus and money is not the only relevant thing that should be exchanged for votes . |

TONYE001: I saw this coming, and this is where many of you get it wrong.
At the expense of your welfare as a Nigerian, you deteriorate matters to become PO vs APC/Tinubu and all that.
You put aside the seriousness of the situation.
Whether or not Obi is guilty of vote buying (he likely is, every Nigerian politician is), vote buying should be criminalized! And, with very heavy punishments.
Don't you see that these people are playing with your future? Don't you see they sell our future on every election day? Are you satisfied with the current state of things in this country?
Leave your personal worries about PO. IS THE ISSUE HE HAS RAISED VALID OR NOT?
In fact, I ask you directly, should vote buying be criminalized or not? Should those that sell their votes and those that buy them be thrown to the deepest spot in the worst Nigerian jail or not?
Leave PO in this matter. Look at the issue raised.
Are you not surprised that vote buying wasn't criminalized? I was!
Is there any sense in the decision of those mad people in the HOR? Absolutely not! Vote buying happens in different guises across the world it's not a crime , you have the freedom of Choice, if I have a pen and you need it for an exam I can give it to you for free or for a fee ,if you make me an offer I cant refuse will sell to you . Do you know in the usa delegates lobby for different projects for their communities, unfortunately in nigeria we have reduced it to just money ,money money . |
Politics › Re: Why Is Tinubu Not Building Value Before Taxing Citizens? by benardtotti(m): 12:01am On Dec 22, 2025 |
ogashman: In Europe and America, their forebearers built infrastructures, social amenities, increased social welfare budgets, raised minimum wage and entrenched strong institutions before they started taxing the citizens.
But in Nigeria, government is taxing the citizens for what they are yet to provide, which to me , doesn't make any sense.
With low Minimum wage and no infrastructure, plus a struggling population that provides basically all social amenities for itself, there is no cogent reason to tax them.
When you tax a struggling population, then you re taxing poverty and this would push many people further down the poverty line. Let's use London that you Nigerians love to run to and claim saner climes , how was London developed from the Romans era till modern day : Depending on which era of London you look at, the source of funding changes significantly: 1. Roman London (The Foundation) When the Romans founded Londinium around 50 AD, the major infrastructure—like the first bridge, the London Wall, and the massive forum—was largely funded by the Roman State. This was a strategic military and economic investment. The labor often came from the Roman military, and the funding was drawn from the imperial treasury (which was itself filled by taxes collected across the Empire). 2. The Great Rebuilding (1666) After the Great Fire of London destroyed most of the city, the rebuilding was a massive financial undertaking. It used two main sources: The Coal Tax: Parliament passed a special tax on every "tun" of coal coming into London. This "tax money" specifically paid for public projects like rebuilding St. Paul’s Cathedral, 52 parish churches, and the Guildhall. Private Credit: Most houses and shops were rebuilt by private citizens using their own money or by borrowing from wealthy neighbors. The City of London also borrowed heavily from private lenders to fix streets and sewers, securing those loans against future tax revenue. 3. The Victorian Boom (19th Century) This was the era of "Private Mania." Surprisingly little "public tax money" went into the early railways or the docks. Railways: Almost all of London’s major railway lines and stations (like Waterloo or St Pancras) were built by private joint-stock companies seeking a profit. Roads: Many roads were "Turnpikes," meaning private trusts built them and charged users a toll to pay back the cost. Sewers: In contrast, the massive Victorian sewer system (built by Joseph Bazalgette) was funded by the Metropolitan Board of Works through public levies and government-backed loans. 4. Modern London Today, London’s growth is a hybrid. Major projects like Crossrail (The Elizabeth Line) or the London Underground upgrades are funded through: Government Grants: Direct tax money from the UK Treasury. Business Rates: A specific tax on local businesses. Fares: Money paid by commuters. Land Value Capture: Charging developers who benefit from new transit lines being built near their property. Analysis thanks to gemini . |

Foreign Affairs › Re: Bill Clinton Grabs Headlines As Epstein Files Finally Released by benardtotti(m): 6:27pm On Dec 20, 2025 |
BlackViper: Donald Trump fought the release of the Epstein files for as long as he could before eventually bowing to pressure from his own supporters to reveal all.
What embarrassments could he be hiding?
When the documents finally dropped on Friday evening, they included a photograph of a president in a hot tub wearing nothing but a tight pair of swimming trunks.
But it wasn’t the man currently in the White House.
“Oh my!” posted Karoline Leavitt, Mr Trump’s press secretary, as she shared the photograph of Bill Clinton.
Although early analysis reveals that Mr Trump, once a close friend of the late paedophile, gets a handful of mentions in the files, it is Mr Clinton who emerges as one of Epstein’s closest associates.
There he is in a swimming pool with Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. There is a second woman with them, but her face is blacked out.
In other photographs, he poses in a red hoodie with a clenched fist beside another woman with her face obscured.
He visits Winston Churchill’s War Rooms with Maxwell and actor Kevin Spacey.
He sits at dinner with Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stone, and poses with Epstein, both men dressed in loud silk shirts.
And there he is, one arm around Michael Jackson, the king of pop, and Diana Ross on his other side.
White House aides revived an old nickname, originally coined for Mr Clinton’s polished but slippery style.
“Slick Willy!” posted Steven Cheung, director of communications, alongside the hot tub picture. “@BillClinton just chillin, without a care in the world. Little did he know…”
In contrast, Mr Trump is notable almost for his absence. He appears tangentially: a name on a giant cheque and an image of one of his books (Trump: The Art of the Comeback) on a bookshelf.
Mr Trump was once a neighbour of Epstein’s in Palm Beach, and they moved in the same moneyed circles in New York before falling out 20 years ago. The president has never been accused of any wrongdoing in the cases against Epstein and maintains that he never knew about Epstein’s crimes.
Yet the Epstein files and their secrets have loomed over the president all year. During the campaign he promised to release all the documents as conspiracy-minded allies claimed that they hid details of a powerful circle of abusers who had been protected by the authorities.
But once in office he tried to brush off the whole affair.
He has flashed irritation at reporters’ questions about his relationship with Epstein. And on Friday, hours before publication of the files, he ended a White House event on drug prices by saying “this is such a big announcement ... I really don’t want to soil it up” by taking questions, “even questions that are very fair questions that I’d love to answer”.
Mr Trump rarely misses a chance to joust with reporters, suggesting rare presidential nerves on what might come out of the files.
He need not have worried.
It was his department of justice after all that was in charge of the release, and it quickly emerged that only a fraction of the files were being published. Officials will continue to scrutinise documents in order to redact details of victims, and the releases are likely to continue for weeks more.
It means the delivery can be carefully managed.
On Friday, the strategy was clear. The White House “flooded the zone” with news.
Mr Trump announced plans to slash drug prices for the government’s Medicaid programme and for cash payers.
A sign went up at the Kennedy Center, Washington’s premier arts venue, renaming it The Donald J Trump and The John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, infuriating liberal opponents of the president.
And an hour-and-a-half after the Epstein dump, Pete Hegseth, the defence secretary, announced strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria after three Americans were killed last week.
Meanwhile, it was Mr Clinton who appeared in all the headlines.
Even the White House chief of staff gave the game away with indiscreet comments in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Although the president has for years claimed that Mr Clinton visited Epstein’s private island, Susie Wiles said “there is no evidence” of that.
Is there any incriminating evidence against Mr Clinton in the files? No.
“The president was wrong about that,” she said.
Incriminating? No.
Embarrassing? Yes.

AMINDA: Defecting with the people's mandate who saw the APC candidate on the ballot before voting for them is neither here nor there. The Nigerian people will still interrogate their performance before choosing to vote for them. Their votes are also not transferable to Tinubu. If it were, Umahi and Uzodinma would have delivered their states while Okowa would have delivered himself as an incumbent governor and a Vice presidential candidate on the ballot. The defections would also not have happened had the ruling party not engineered crisis in all other opposition parties. It's not borne out of love, it's coerced. Tinubu doesn't need to win all the states he just needs 25% ,the south east is not his stronghold but he will do better this time than in last election you can argue all you want but reality is staring you in the face, no incumbent party has lost elections by a wide margin not even gej against the famed buhari in 2014 . |

Politics › Re: Chinese, Indians & Lebanese chasing for greener pastures in Nigeria - Shehu Sani by benardtotti(m): 10:43am On Dec 15, 2025 |
franchasofficia: This topic is bigger than Shehu Sanni's small brain.
Let me educate him and other people that think like him.
Nigeria is a poor country rich with some natural mineral resources and governed by the most corrupt Nigerians who managed to fight their corrupt way to the top.
These people parading themselves as leaders in Nigeria lack vision, their only interest is how to enrich themselves, their family members, close friends, political associates, political sycophants that help them hold on to power, and because of this, the wealth from the mineral resources of Nigeria is hijacked by the ruling class and some privileged entrepreneurs. All these and more made Nigeria and Nigerians more miserable as corruption becomes institutionalized in Nigeria, causing hardship, illiteracy, mass youth unemployment, underemployment and complete idleness.
But then, due to high level of illiteracy, fear of future/old age, Islamic religion, etc., Nigeria have enormous population who are mostly young people. This population means needs that must be met whether they are poor or rich; they must feed, cloth, shelter, merry and sorrow, which creates opportunities for products and services to be rendered to solve the problems and needs of the enormous population of Nigeria.
As a Nigerian youth, when you notice these needs and opportunities, you wish to startup a business or service rendering to meet these peoples needs in exchange for money, but then you dont have the money to get you started, in some cases, you dont have the skill or technical know how to render the services and you need to survive. What do you do? And you hear about another country that have lots of well paying jobs that dont even require much skill and when you check the exchange rate, if you earn little there it can be sent back to Nigeria and quadrupled, what would you do? Immigrate to that country asap to start working to earn consistent income that will enable you live your dream life.
On the contrary, Chinese and Indians come from a country doing better than Nigeria, they know there are numerous problems in Nigeria they can offer Solutions to and build a business or company around it, they come equipped from their country. Chinese government for instance give Chinese investors huge capital for business, and they also come equipped with the skills and technical know how, so its usually easy for them to startup a new business in Nigeria.
So in summary, Nigerians need to japa to work in already established businesses to enable them save before talking about starting their own business. But Indians and Chinese only come to Nigeria to do business and go, so they come equipped with their capital, skill and technical know how. So it's not as if Nigerians aren't seeing the opportunities, they are seeing it but only those that have the capital, skill and technical know how can startup a business.
There is a difference between economic migrant and an investor. Most Indians, Chinese, etc come to Nigeria as investors while Nigerians japa to other countries as economic migrants that arrive their destination country empty handed and need a job to start a life Nice logic but what of Lebanon? You deliberately skipped them to suit your narrative that Chinese and Indians are doing well because their govt supports them Cos you and I know Lebanon is as poor as nigeria and are unstable . So final summation is shehu sani is right you don't need to leave the country to make it , there are lots of young Nigerians breaking through and succeeding the reason you don't know it is because you spend your time on news that talks about negative aspects of nigeria , most Nigerians on social media spend their time on rubbish and wonder why they are not growing, This year a colleague of mine in tech got Mastercard funding of $100k for her biz right here in nigeria , there are lots of opportunities in nigeria but few people get to know or utilise it and our leaders like it like that cos they can now take advantage and benefit from those resources. |

nairalanda1: Once upon a time, everybody wanted to be in PDP. It even got so bad that at one point a PDP official made the prediction that PDP would rule for the next 2500...sorry 25 years. And the oppostion was in disarray.
Well,we know how the constant defections turned out. By 2014, the PDP was split from within, plus the idea that the North thought it was its turn, plus the splits within the party, and the result was the loss of the 2015 elections (which could have STILL been won if Benue PDP was united, not divided).and so forth.
I see a lot of APC members gloating about the defections to their party. Well, all I got to say is, the more people defect to the APC, the higher the chances of APC imploding. I mean APC nearly collapsed in 2023, if not for buhari essentially telling his supporters to observe party discipline...even then many of them voted for Atiku. Now everyone is cheering as this governor defects to APC.
Well, know that the governor is defecting to a party where his enemies are. And in satisfying everyone now, problems will arise.
And yes, it can cause implosion of the party...like PDP
I am not saying that APC should stop defectors...the problem with Nigerian politicans is they always want to be on the winning side, including those who are still in the oppostion. But at the end, it no go end well.
(Awaits apc supporters to call me obident and IPOB member) You guys keep making this mistake of assuming apc is like pdp , from the days of 2014 merger apc is a party that doesn't tolerate party indiscipline , it's a strict code and everyone is allowed or expected to play their part to make the party a success, indiscipline is the bane of other parties , just today alone accord party is having 2 factions claiming right of way for osun governoship aspirant.
