The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned the Labor Party, LP, and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to stop blaming the commission for its failure to effectively prosecute the case at the PEPT Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. INEC lawyer Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) gave this warning in response to a claim by lawyer Livy Uzoukwu (SAN) to LP and Obi on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Uzoukwu blamed INEC for the middle of the trial after another member of the petitioners' legal team, Audu Anuga (SAN), who presented the documents, suddenly announced that they had exhausted what they had for the day. The lawyer claimed that the office of the INEC chairman refused to honor the summons sent to Professor Mahmood Yakubu to produce some documents. Uzoukwu, who is the head of the legal team of the petitioners, got up and told the court that his team would have liked to proceed, but the INEC chairman's office refused to accept the call for documents, which was a further development. This hindered the progress of their case. However, Pinheiro, the INEC lawyer, pointed out that the petitioners used to look for the culprit whenever they got stuck and could not pursue their case. He said, "It has become a habit. If they want to delay, they are looking for someone to whip. It cannot be true that the INEC chairman's office is rejecting the challenge. "Don't use INEC as a whipping boy. If they have nothing else to do today, just say it. This is their day. "The fact that the INEC chairman's office refused to accept the challenge is not right," he added. Source; The Vanguard Newspaper Online |

Chief Olisa Agbakoba, human rights activist and former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), has praised the Federal Government for reportedly floating the naira currency after so many years of sticking with a hard peg that hit hard on investors and drained dollars from the economy. It has been reported that Nigeria has officially floated its naira currency whereby a market rate based on a willing buyer and a willing seller is currently being quoted by banks who sent out emails to some customers confirming the change Wednesday morning. The news caused some apprehensions among Nigerians given that it could lead to higher exchange rates from banks, even as Daily Independent gathered that the exchange rate could go as high as between N800 and N1000 by the end of today, according to some bankers, who said the CBN’s next move should be to prioritize supply of dollars to support the naira float. However, speaking to our correspondent, the rights activist and lawyer said this is one piece of good news that would be classified as a good one for him in the last sixty years. He said much as it could engender higher exchange rate, it was good since the foreign exchange market has become another source of corruption among the few players. He said: “This is one piece of news that I will say is the best I have heard in the last sixty years. I am hearing it from you and if it is true, I have to commend Tinubu on this. He has shown that he is in charge. “With these two policies of fuel subsidy and forex market, Tinubu has done very well in the short period he has been the president. “What is forex market, it is artificial control of the foreign exchange whereby few people manipulate the system to the detriment of the poor and the majority. “What is fuel subsidy? It is the manipulation of the petroleum subsidy regime whereby few people enrich themselves corruptly in the name of importation of fuel. There is no way Nigerians are consuming 60 million liters of petrol daily but because they are corruptly enriching themselves, they sell what they quoted in other countries. “But firstly I want the government to fully explain to Nigerians the corruption in the foreign exchange market and the same in the fuel subsidy regime so that they would know why the two have to go and why they should ensure the pain for a while,” he said. Meanwhile, reminded that the naira float could cause some hardship in the country, he said it was very imperative despite the initial pain. “Are you saying that we cannot for example bear the pain of say five to six months instead of few people corruptly feeding fat on our commonwealth? I think this is the best news I have heard in the last 60 years,” he said. |
Sensational Security boys, Happie Boys, have reacted to the backlash they received after they called out clergyman, Apostle Chibuzor Ugochinyere, on social media. On Tuesday, June 13, the young men shared a voicenote on their Instagram page of the clergyman placing a curse on them for allegedly being ungrateful after he sent them on a scholarship to Cyprus. Recall Happie Boys became internet sensations after being sacked for dancing at a restaurant they previously worked at in Nigeria. The clergyman saw their video online asking for help and promised to sponsor their education abroad. He later flew them to study in Cyprus. In the post shared on their pages online on Tuesday, the alleged said the cleric had reneged on his promise to sponsor their education. They claimed he took care of them for 6 months after arriving Cyprus and asked them to wait for another 6 months as he was having some challenges. They alleged that they are still yet to get help after the 6 months. They further claimed that some of those on same scholarship have dropped out, while others from rich families have continued. The young men who are claiming that they’ve never spoken ill of Apostle Chinyere, alleged that someone screen-recorded a live session they had and sent to the cleric who got infuriated and accused them of trying to disgrace him. Read here. Some Nigerians felt their post showed they were ungrateful and took to social media to slam them. Reacting to the backlash, the Happie boys via their Instagram page stated that all that glitters is not gold. In an apparent jab to the clergyman, they asked that he should show the world proof of those that have graduated from his scholaship scheme and are doing well for themselves. ‘’Those making negative comments can never understand what we have seen. You contınue to send people on scholarshıps, Show the World the proof of those that have graduated from the schorlashıp and are doıng well for themselves, nobody can use Our stars to rıde prıvate jet and expect us to remaın quıet.
