The private Premier University in Nigeria, Igbinedion University, Okada, has emerged winner of the inter-tertiary institution debate, which held at the International Conference Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on the 20th to 22rd February, 2017. IUO emerged the best, beating Ambrose Ali University to 2nd runner up and the host university, Obafemi Awolowo University to 3rd runner up. The inter-tertiary institution debate, which is an annual event comprises Universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics in Nigeria. This year’s theme was on "LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT", the contest is usually a mixture of the binary and British Parliamentary debate techniques. The most complex issue with this type of debate is that contenders were not told about the motion of the debate until they converge at the parliament where the motion is announced and every participant had a maximum of 15 minutes to prepare. Also, contenders are made to know where they stand (oppose or support) through a ballot system. IUO found itself opposing the motion which said, "This house believes that Nigerian Leader will win the war against insecurity in Nigeria". IUO was represented by Uche Ebezim 500L Medicine, Charity Atuchukwu 500L Medicine, Queen Ovbude 200L Mass Communication, Miracle Febuins 500L Engineering and Dorcas Lurgem 200L Mass communication. The Igbinedion University team was led by Dr. Christian C. Odoemelam, a lecturer in the department of Mass Communication. Nine institutions from across some of the geopolitical zones of Nigeria participated in the event and they include; Federal College of Education Umunze, Anambra State; Federal University Ndufe Alike, Ebonyi State; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State; Ambrose Ali University, Edo State; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic Saki, Oyo State; Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State; Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State; Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State; and Samuel Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State. In his remark before the debate, the chairman of the evaluation panel Professor Yaqub of the German Language Institute, Duetsche, noted that participants were to be evaluated on the basis of appearance, body language, strength of argument, content and eloquence . The grand finale of the event was held on the 21st of February where the awards were announced. There was a major tensed moment and a hush in the hall as the scores were announced. Speaking to pressmen after the awards, the chief speaker of the Igbinedion University team, Uche Ebezim, a 500L Medical Student, said: "We just thank God for our University that keeps supporting us in these events. Last year, the University ensured that we participated at the International Public Speaking in Tamale, Ghana, where we emerged 1st & 2nd runners up respectively. These opportunities have really exposed us as Nigerian students". On her part, the Igbinedion University Management has pledged to always support her students in such events. According to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Osaghae E. Eghosa, "it is an extension of the learning experience provided by the university for our students". I have noticed with dismay how Nigerians act as if all our politicians are 100% bad. If you ever have this thought it means you are also guilty of greed and similar offence. I for one believe in the rule of law and wunt ever take issues from the surface. Dasuki has not been proven guilty by a court of law and as a result of these three factors I believe he is a victim of witch-hunt so far: 1. Has not been allowed any public speech or can he run away by been allowed to speak to journalist? All we hear is Dasuki said this or that, why can't we hear it direct from the horses mouth? 2. No document(s) in public domain has shown a contract of $2.1bn or various contract that added up to that amount. 3. Dasuki by law(vicarious liability) should not be made the scape goat. Am a GeJ fan but if truely that amount was stolen,Gej should also face the repercussion. Note that I am not saying Dasuki should be freed by given the third point but he alone cannot be made to pay for the crime. The master should also pay if he approved the contract(s) or else Dasuki should be freed. Cc lalasticlala ishilove seun |

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has filed an appeal against the judgment of the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal nullifying the election of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. The electoral body filed her appeal dated November 4, 2015 at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division on November 5, 2015. In a 12-grounds appeal filed on behalf of INEC by her counsel, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, the electoral body challenged the entirety of the tribunal’s judgment. The reliefs sought by INEC in her appeal include: “an order allowing the appeal, an order setting aside the decision of the tribunal and an order dismissing the petition as lacking in merit.” According to INEC, the learned justices of the tribunal erred in law when it failed to evaluate the evidence of each of the witness called by the petitioners before reaching its decision. INEC stated: “The tribunal was obligated to making findings as to where elections were said to have held on the one part and where they were alleged not to have held on the other part.” The electoral body further stated that the tribunal erred when it resorted to generic declaration like “many instances,” when the justices were obligated to specify where the evidence elicited under cross examination enhanced the case of the first and second respondents. The INEC further stated that the tribunal erred when it used the testimonies of witnesses who were not at polling stations to nullify the Rivers governorship election. INEC in her appeal stated: “Evidence of reports at an election by persons who did not make them and who did not observe th the proceedings, the subject matter of the reports cannot be substitute for evidence of witnesses in the polling units of Rivers State. “Exhibits A303-A305, A307 and A2 are documentary hearsay which ought not to be relied upon as proof of the allegations of non-conduct and improper conduct of election in the polling units in Rivers State.” INEC stated that the tribunal disregarded Section 49 (1) and (2) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended which is a statutory provision binding on it. The electoral body further stated that the decision of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal on the law were duly cited to the tribunal, but it ignored same. According to INEC, there was no due evaluation of the 56 witnesses called by the petitioners pointing out that the witnesses who testified did not link their testimonies to the documents tendered. INEC added that the tribunal erred in law when it failed to indicate that the petitioners failed to prove their case on a polling unit by polling unit basis as required by law. The electoral body added that the tribunal erred when it failed to demonstrate the reasons why it rejected the evidences professed by witnesses of INEC, PDP and Governor Wike. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/inec-faults-tribunal-s-judgment-on-rivers-guber-election-asks-appeal-court-to-set-it-aside/224846/?utm_medium=twitter Cc Lalasticlala ishilove |
