Few days to harvesting now grin

From your experience when does the rain become too much that your soil becomes water logged.......

Most crops planted February are usually profitable

What bird could b dis

If truely birds are the problem devouring ur seeds,
Just get 3-4 people to patrol ur field probably performing spraying from dawn to dusk for the first 7 days.....

After sprouting and germination, I believe d problem will disappear

I understand what you saying, normally ending of July/August/early September is well known as glut period of tomato, that's the usual pattern, but I believe it's gonna be different this year....reason being that the scarcity period is already enlonged, local farmers that fill the supply chain that causes glut in August also planted very early because they are the one selling mostly in Lagos now, tomato is not cucumber that grows in 45 days..so were will the glut come from?

Northern farmer are still morning their losses diverting funds to soya, pepper, potatoes etc.

If there will be glut ,I'm forecasting December.

Still exercise cautious optimism, Yoruba tomato is already out and supply continues to mid September when second half of the rain starts, yoruba tomato glut is definitely coming this August break, the signs are already there

How can u get a good production of pineapples during fasting period.....Can u channel the step by step process to it?

That is the only time of the year when fruits command premium prices

As i looked at the video, i just pitied thise farmers in the video, I hope they don’t plan to grow vegetables as Evaporation will just waste their efforts

Their set-up looks pitiable, cant help but laugh at them if it’s farming thats their motive.......... Pumping from depth to a raingun

Drip is the answer to what they have on ground

I don't believe you have this type. Not because it's expensive o but I can smell you don't know what you're saying.
It depends on your design.

I wont engage u, but what i can tell u is most pumps will power the raingun, trick is distance from the pump

Nigerian farms will humble the travelling irrigator

wuyexzy01:
You can use this efficiently if you are doing maize on large scale. 10acres upwards. But u need a big pump to achieve the maximum spray length 70m.

I have this raingun and have only achieved 41m on 18nozzle that’s if u are within 10m from the stream, it will fail woefully for 10acres as u will just kill ur pump cos of run time

Funny enough. I read on this forum where one guy was lamenting bitterly and cursing anybody that opposed him regarding irrigation. I'm not sure I can find that thread again. He was saying emphatically that if you want to go into farming and can't do irrigation just don't try it. I was laughing reading his post not knowing my own unfortunate situation was looming as well. Now I know better. The weather is highly highly unpredictable.

No no and no, there are farmers i know that farm effectively with the rains come rain come shine, we just don’t know their secrets.........

Many know d local meterological data by heart, they know soils that are not good for crops say tomato......

I invested into farming and came to know the nature of farming secondarily....... There are people that are born into it though few, come rain come shine they remain profitable..........

Never ever get carried away by any technology, they have their place in the scheme of Agriculture and many technology will fail when confronted with our local conditions

I am really confused about nairaland is it only people that have few hundred thousand that are here because I no understand ooo… I know few farms that cultivate different crops on like 30 to 50 acres and they started with 20 And they’re successful now… they own personal cars. The only thing I see on nairaland is 2plot success of tomatoes or cucumber, 2acres failure of tomatoes…. Nah only 2-3plot una Dey get success for here? Must I start from 2 plots? What if I have like 10 - 20 million to start a agribusiness where I am gonna have agronomists- marketers-contracted laborers-security…. I go con carry 20million for hand con go Dey cultivate 2plots? I have never see a successful 5 acres of tomatoes farm here but I know some and have even see some on Facebook… nah only newbies Dey here? Abi nah fund issue?

This is where extension comes in...... pls respect any farmer that offers to share his experience on this platform as they can help you not loose all your money.....

Yes you can invest that 20million on 2 plots and still make profit......

Many farmers here are all targeting off-season products, this constrains your scale considerably as to scale outwards would need considerable industrial technology and manpower in conjunction with agronomics......

As extension is virtually non-existent in The country, we are left with the scraps seed sellers teach out as extension just so that they can sell their seeds...... Even the seed sellers are afraid of farmers making it the modern way as the farmers would bypass them and go direct to the manufacturers

We are planning on employing an agronomists and marketers that will deal with agents in all major markets in Nigeria.. what do you think
Hmmm, except during glut, tomato sells itself, u really don’t need all d marketers and agent,

Imagine u have 4 hectares of tomato ready.... I bet u wont be able to leave ur farm gate....The fight for ur produce will be helele.....,,

Every body plus ur workers would be strategizing to rob u in broad daylight

It would waste a lot of fuel if u use d wrong

For 100 acres, don't use raingun , don't use drip, the best for such is furrow, don't go and waste your money.

If done well you can irrigate 100acres at once without buying a drop of fuel, by just damming the stream.....

My only problem with furrow is not even waste of water but waste of fertilizer
Agriculture / Re: Raingun Expert Needed by betabread: 9:18pm On Jun 04, 2023
If u have d money to irrigate a 100 acre farm considering local Nigerian conditions, i will advise u to buy a fire truck, and a 33,000 liter tanker, then modify the firing nozzle by fitting ur rain gun there, viola ur mission to irrigate starts

Caveat: U still have a lot of challenges to face..... Irrigation is not cut and sow, its highly technical......but u will take solace in d fact that with the set up above, if it fails u will not be left with things that have poor resale value

I start selling today officially smiley, and I sold for those that want to resell at the same spot at 17k per crate. Normally it should be 18k...let me put it this way.. any farmer that transplant between (open field) feb-march, and you notice your tomato don't do well like previous years or perhaps you are newbie, it is general including myself, the weather cause it and there is nothing we can do about it. Farmers has being complaining to me, one even said" he suspect one woman behind the ordeal grin grin grin"
U will mint cash, currently in my axis, no farmer that planted feb-mar has tomato in commercial qty

u don't need atrazine for Lagon, lagon is effective if the land is wet....

My ploughing is shady and there are patches of weeds not properly buried....... can i mix lagon with paraquat, dont want the give d improperly buried weeds a head start

There is a technique I have been using. I do not use any herbicides.

I use a tractor to plough. After ploughing, I plant. Once the maize is 3-weeks post sprouting, I mix urea and mycorrhiza into my seed planter, and roll the planter beside the plants.

Mycorrhiza makes the maize develop a much more efficient root system for max utilization. It is a naturally occurring fungus, but is destroyed by herbicides.

The difference between my crop and those of other farmers is always amazing.

Whats ur experience using Lagon for maize,
Im switching from atrazine as i want to use same piece of land for tomato in October...

If u have used lagon, is it compatible with paraquat

Modern societies will learn the hard way, there is a reason every successful society separated men from women when ever there’s any pursuit to achieve, abrahamic religions even took it to the extremes........

Nothing of significance can ever be achieved when men and women are welded to work together,,,,, u just activated the reptilian brain, higher faculties will never kick in

Nothing great can ever be archived in a work place ridddled with big dicks and sumptuous asses roaming about

I want to start to plan for my future. This future is about setting up a fully.irrigated farm using rainguns.

I want to know the entire setup cost and will pay a tip to anyone that can complete the grid in my mind.

I will like to know the number of rain guns to buy.

I want to setup a 100 acres Raingun-Irrigated farm.

I will like to know the number of rain guns to buy

I also like to know the estimate time it will take to irrigate the 100 acres at once

I also want to know the estimated quantity of fuel it will take to irrigate the 100 acres

I will pay 4000 Naira for a complete design system.

You want to carry out a project of over 50 million naira and you want to pay 4000 for a complete design..........

My biggest problem with orchards and perennials is land ownership problems especially if you are not an indigene of your community............
You suffer for 3 to 5 years nuturing trees and viola @ the 5th year you start battling with one family after another( woe betide you if its cocoa or cashew)
Please help me touch light this issue

Good morning Nairalander’s

I’m in a confused state as I have like 4m I wanted to use for agriculture this year I wanted to plant the raining season maize but people are saying that raining maize is unprofitable and marketers don’t buy raining season maize unlike dry season maize that I wont make profit.
Please have anyone planted raining season maize here and sell it as fresh maize before and was able to sell everything and make profit ? I wanted to do the farm in Ibadan fully mechanized but I’m worried I might not be able to sell when it’s ready by June/July or so

My brother lock that 4million naira up and go acquire practical agricultural knowledge........so u dont regret wasting money when u have acquired d real practical knowledge ......

All farm na strategy based on different circumstances in ur way....U are still yet to know what to invest that money in.........

I suggest u pay a successful farmer to mentor u lest u might just stickpile junk

Sir, I have 2 question:
1.) Whats ur strategy negotiating with farm laborers.....As a modern farmer ur jobs on the farm is way way different from tilling which laborers are used to
2.)Aside drip have u explored other irrigation methods, there are some lands in valley areas in my side which just need to be irrigated a maximum of 3times in the dry season, if u could just flood the land(not for tomato per se)
Agriculture / Re: My Dry Season Maize Farming by betabread: 11:43am On Feb 16, 2023
