How can one farm profitably.....A cursory look at my costs tells me that chemicals and fertilizer eat up more than 75% of my cost........... The original idea of farming is to get free seeds and ur highest cost should be labor.....Even when there’s bumper harvest,Costs are already so high that one is not enthusiastic to go another run and I really dont want to end up selling farm inputs as thats how many people end.....,
Sir, if it’s possible, i want u to include inn ur update us for the prices of perishabe vegetables (cabbage, cucumber, tomato, pepper, fresh corn, tatase, watermelon) ....
Farmerakinloye6: Like Grandpoh said "it will take time before the stand balance, when it overstay in nursery" it is exactly 63 old today. I will be transplanting like six thousand by weekend. 10g of diva and 10g of plantinum on virgin land...more update loading...
Sir, i will like to understand ur water source, do u still use stream water, if u do how do u manage clogging of ur tapes........ The stream i currently use is muddy, i fear for my tapes
surrogatesng: I watched several videos on youtube where farmers testified about increased yield in their crops due to use of human urine as fertlizer.Let us debate. If you are in support or not of using human urine as fertilizer for crops and your reasons
There’s nothing special about d use of human urine or feaces as farm ammendment, the problem is d bulk handling..........I for one would love those shit trucks in lagos travel down to my land and empty their content evenly around my farm, it lies in fallow for that year and i cultivate the next year............ Well composted, im sure those northerners that rush poultry waste in december will shift focus
I have a big problem, the stream i use for irrigation is currently muddy, i dont think the sieve strainer for my drip Can sieve out particules effectively
Kedoty: Barn is alternative option for me, I've made arrangement with Egun people (those guys from Kutonu) they are specialist in making barn to preserve maize. Hope that answers the question. Thank you
This Egun people, though many are born in farms are not technical farmers, storing ur output in hand construted barns “called Aka” with little control of insect pest will eat into ur profit...... many of this barns are not immune to water entry in tough rain fall.....
Finally, is there a market for fresh white corn, im sincerely hoping for this, yield of white varieties beats yellow varieties

Please dont see my contribution as negative criticism, im a maize farmer too pushing my yield target, with my target as having corn in February with maximum yield, thats when corn sells the highest......
Kedoty: Today's update on 10 Hecters of maize cultivation
Today makes 60th days of planting
Counting down begins, remain 15 days to maturity. Though I'm leaving it to dried before harvest
Below are the pictures at 60 days
I hope u have executed the right strategy to allow it dry in d sun......I Believe u want to use d dry spell in august for proper dry down but rain this year had been a bitch, any slight rain in august during dry down will lead to sudden germination while maize is still on d plant plus heavy fungus infestation........ Pls discuss how u intend to go about this
OluchiDelly: Bros why nauh! Why spending huge resources to maintain an okra farm for almost 3months b4 maturity when there are improved varieties with just 45 to 50days maturity everywhere? 0.8acre (roughly an acre)...that one don pass experimenting a beg! The wilting is also partly a function of the variety. You are planning to burn fuel on top drip for about 5months (3months maturity plus 2 months harvesting) by dry season? ...when you can burn less fuel on top improved varieties for 3months or less. Bros think am well o.
Permit my indulgence, how long can i keep harvesting an okro plant economically if it is given adequate watering
Farmerakinloye6: I could not detail this thread the way I want because am over occupy! My advice; plant f1 seed if you are growing for commercial purpose, don't underestimate gray squirrel, use manure, spray insecticide e.tc. personally I can never grow watermelon for commercial purpose . Me and my boys eat and satisfy, I dash close to 15 out, this is the Last one which I will be giving my mother.
U just made a hugh statement, what did u see or notice to say u can never grow water melon for commercial purposes

OluchiDelly: Which variety is this? I perceive poor drainage pattern. It's like u did not make ridges/plough.. If u are not going for ridging, ensure that ur land is a bit sloppy.
Hmmmm I did not plough and ridge but land is sloppy, this is occurring more in d plants downhill......
betabread: Your corn is nearing 2 months now and y are preparing for harvest......
At this stage i ask, are u selling fresh or dry, If u are selling fresh the price of fresh corn has dropped, there is glut in the fresh corn market currently, but if are going to dry your corn please state the strategy you would use to dry ur corn, i want to believe the coming august break is too short a time to dry out ur corn as any little moisture in d nteak will lead to either fungus over growth or seeds germinating on cobs

shariff84: thank you for this contribution,I also planted pioneer seed before and I also planted oba98.i adviced someone to plant oba98 with good fertilizer application the result will be great.
Sir , pls tell me the weight ranges of a bag of dry maize packed in those northern 100kg bags.......
I want to believe it is variable based on the seed weight, a friend of mine had planted pioneer before and the ogi yield from the corn is about 2.5 times that of normal varieties around but seeds look same size
I really want to understand the origin of seed yield data as advertised by sellers
grandpoh: It was done manually close to 50 rings I thinks it’s cos of the volume of water it’s pumping daily now about 18k ltrs.
The only thing with farm and borehole is that make sure you’re the only one operating it this way the pumping machine and gen lasts longer else those workers are devils incarnate.
50 rings thats about 60m depth, with 18k liters per day........ men its better to go near a river.......,its not worth both installation and operational cost
As much as the points raises are valid,.I still want to believe there could be ways around this.
That's just my thought sha. Let's wait to hear from more People though.
Any way around this involves spending money on dryers, which the bulk of the farmers that plant the beans we eat will never expend..........
When one purchases a dryer in the south, it never makes economic sense to dry grains especially before trashing, when there are other crops with higher value like cocoa....
I've been wondering for awhile about the seeming dearth of commercial beans farmers in the South West of Nigeria.
I am not saying we don't have beans farmers, but we seems not to have a high population of commercial beans farmers like we have for tomato, cucumber and a few other crops.
What could be responsible for this?
And if there are commercial beans farmers, can they share their experiences here so we can all learn?
Even though I am not sure of a few things but I know that our soil can support beans cultivation and the weather shouldn't pose much of a challenge.
So, let's discuss and learn from one another. Whatever you share here will surely help a lot of aspiring beans farmers to come a certain conclusion.
So...over to you good people of NL.
The problem with beans and other grains xonsumed dry is the window of drying, most bean farmers plant beans with late rain in September to november to take advantage of the dry season spell between secember to mid February...,,,,
Here in the south west we get silly showers in the dry season from time to time, for farmers that rely on sun drying this is a curse. One silly shower on beans during drying can ruin months of hard work and damage millions of naira.....
Thats d basic reason u dont get beans farmers in the south
