I almost had a heart attack 2 days later when an Sms came from unilorin that i've been offered Bsc Physiology. Went to the school adm. office and was told school admission is FINAL.go to the school bro and lodge ur complaint in the adm. office. I pray ur case is rectified. I've not been myself since then. I pray I do not go crazy soon. Twas so so so so Excruciatingly Painful.

Bro, u need to go and do a massive thanksgiving. I had 258 & 80% in jamb and p-j respectively and applied for medicine which i wanted all my life but i was given another course. U have to be dead serious bro, they drop medical students like twigs there. Congratulations once again. Can i have ur whatsapp contact if u don't mind

Well u've just proven beyond any doubt that u are lying. By the way sweety, thanks for that acrimonious asperity. But to your utter consternation, I've been offered Medicine and surgery in the very 1st batch surger.
I thought ur likes are now extinct. To possess such effrontery and temerity to post such a dubious post on a better by far university thread is very unscrupulous.. Unilorin admitting such a score for MBBS?. I wonder what attention u are trying to garner.
Meanwhile u can still help this 2005 cunt in seeking admission hmmmm....??. GOD HAVE MERCY. Astagafurulilahi!!!

TONYE001:

Thanks, brother, for encouraging me.

I wish you the very best Sir. It's possible, it's achievable. Go for it, put in your very best. As I always urge students, study because you SHOULD study and not because of an event (interview, exam, etc). If we make reading a habit, success would be an everyday tale!

I had the same plan too. In my time, a CGPA of 4.0/5.0 was the requirement to switch to MBBS/Dentistry at the end of thr 100 Level, I didn't make it. I shifted to Plan B which was making a 2-1 and then transfering to MBBS/Dentistry (to begin from Year 3 if it's the same school). When we got to Year 2, Uniport had an issue with their MBBS program (overpopulation). This almost cost them their accreditation. Consequently, they shut down all transfer options to MBBS (I think they didn't accept JAMB MBBS applicants too).

I graduated with a 2-1; as God would have it, I was the 6th in a class of 140-150. Presently, I'm rounding up my Youth Service (would be done by October)...and I still have some MBBS possibilities on my table.

Again, success to you and every other person in your shoes. We shall hear your testimonies.

Amen Amen Amen... And you too sir.

Yea, I still want Medicine. Right now, I'm giving Medicine a hot chase and when I'm done, I shall put together my experience and publish it here on Nairaland.

yeah pls do. 'cos am not ready to waste any time at all. Here, the best 10 100lvl physiology students(with high g.p) are ported to medicine. I have began studying in earnest and i advice others to do so.

Physiology is a basic medical science that considers the functionality of the human complex. It has various subdivisions - renal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, reproductory, etc.

The truth: In the African society, there are limited job opportunities for Physiologists BUT if you know your "onions", you can find your way through.

Many Physiology students wanted Medicine - I wanted (and I still want) Medicine. The only way to find your way back to MBBS is to ensure that you bag a GOOD degree, a minimum of Second Class Upper would do.

If you want, you may proceed to the M. Sc level and pick up a lecturing job. My advice is that, if Medicine is what you want, chase after it with all your might while you still can.

Source: I'm a Physiology graduate from Uniport's Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences...
Yeah. Thanks so much. Nice meeting you. The drastic and almost endemic unemployment problem for physiologists is not peculiar to africa, it's universal
Are u still pursuing medicine as a physiologist or have u been employed and u can still tell me more on physiology. I want to gather enough knowledge on the course. THANKS

what m saying is.
anatomy is divided into 3....histology,embryology and gross anatomy..
anatomy is not just one course... its a wide field with branches...as I said... gross anatomy is a regional stuff... while others r systemic..
there's also neuroanatomy. In unilorin.. its d last posting...(neuro posting) ...then they teach everything on d nervous system.
Hi boss, from my little research and some textbooks i downloaded. I realised that physiology is far broader and wider than anatomy since anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body while physiology entails both the study and functions of the body parts. Pls can u tell me what u knw on physiology as a course?. I'd appreciate. And thanks for the 100lvl courses u posted. They are invaluable to me right now.

lomaxx:

Adopt the dual approach to getting admitted.

Go for A levels. Cambridge preferably if you have the wherewithal. IJMB can suffice as well.

Then sneak in some study time for UTME. Studying for UTME on its own is enough. Having an A level background makes you a boss.

If Medicine is what you want, don't do Physiology for a long term goal. You can do Physiology now and Medicine later - which means you'll need to do the clearance. It's just gonna take longer. But if can afford the risk, try the first option.

It's very painful to work hard and not see results. It's very painful. I'm talking from experience. Some years ago, I scored 273 in UME and 328 in Post-UME and University of Uyo refused to give me admission on merit. It was the highest UME and Post-UTME score that year for MBBS(as I learnt later on). I'm an indigene of the state as well. I had mbbs admission elsewhere(you can imagine) but I wanted to school at home. I had to beg them to give me admission which they later heeded to.

However, this is life and bad things happen. Bad things do not happen to break us but to make us and help us discover abilities we never thought were possible. Life would always go on and failure isn't final. It maybe one year gone, but it's for a reason.

Good luck.
Thanks so much Dr lomaxx, u really are a spotlight to future doctors and other medical fields. I read ur earlier posts and they were really rejuvenating.
Well, I adopted the dual approach. I wrote kwasu's post ume and had 94% and i was offered biochemistry(they don't offer medicine there yet) which i turned down instantly.
In unilorin here, i heard the best 20 students in BMS(anatomy and physiology) transit to MBBS. So the qstn i wanna ask is: can i go for this course and aim for the best, write 2015 jamb and still undergo IJMB to widen my chances?.

O God, Thats incredible. 1 of my sec. Sch pals was offered medicine with Jamb-229 and Putme-72%. I was told that my being a non-indigene(not even in catchment area) was the reason. I really feel for ur brother ooo. Well God knows the best!!!. U told me in unilorin thread that the best 10 or so migrate to medicine in 200level. Am gonna give it a shot. Thanks so much once again.

Hi all. I really admire the matured contribution of most of the guys on this thread(Drhesjay,Doclight, fatima amongst others). Though i'm an introvertive and reserved fellow but this thread has encouraged me to spill my bitter guts.
I applied for medicine and surgery in the university of ilorin and i had 254 and 80% in my jamb and post-utme respectively. My single sitting waec result was also good with 2 A1s, 1 C5, and the rest Bs. But when the list was released, I was offered physiology. No one can imagine how i felt that day. I was so downcast and almost went shizophrenic. And far disheartening was my research on this course. I learnt that most graduates(physiologists and anatomists) are hardly employable and their services are hardly required in any establishment including hospitals. Am yet to come to a reasonable conclusion on what to do. I've seen some who were given the course with far lower scores i am not trying to show off or demean them but i'm just confused and utterly perplexed right now. I have not even paid the clearance fee because am considering opting for IJMB or Remedial. I wonder how a school of that stance would be so discriminating in awarding such a course. I sincerely need the candid advice of my bosses here cos the clearance is supposed to close on the 21st.

BMS means Basic Medical Sciences, which in Unilorin, is a faculty that comprises anatomy and physiology departments

DrHesjay:
Yeah..nice question.
After your premedical year i.e. 100level, some of you guys in medicine would be dropped ..... Everybody most definitely cannot make it to 200level medicine. As at last last year, the criteria was a cgpa of 3.0 and having not more than 2Ds in the 17 courses...
There is also a transfer for 20 best BMS students. So when you are about to start 200level, the best 10 students in anatomy and the 10 best students in physiology will be transferred to medicine.
.
The top 20 losers in medicine would then be transferred to BMS to fill up the spaces left by the 20 BMS students that got medicine.
For example, if 30 students drop in medicine, the best 20 among them will be given Anatomy n physiology.. The other 10 would have to go to other science departments that are ready to take them in...maybe zoology or plant biology....

.
To cross, you have to be really serious, the standard is really increasing. There are rumours that people with 2Ds might not even cross this year unlike how it has always been. We also heard the crossing criteria for BMS is now 2.5 instead of the 2.0 they were using.
.
The criteria to cross to 200level nursing is a cgpa of 2.5 and having No F... If you are in nursing and you have 4.7, but a F in Phy191(1 unit course), you are going nowhere...
.
I will advice that all of you in medicine strive hard for 4points i.e. at least a B in all your courses....
Unilorin medical school can be crazy.. They drop people even in 500level... so dropping someone in 100level is like child play to them..

Many Thanks for this revealing explanation. Actually, I was offered physiology despite my high Jamb and p-utme scores but i was told my being an Enugu indigene(out of catchment area) was what worked against me. With God's help I hope to cross over to Medicine but am still afraid if my being an Eastherner will still impair that. I'm still baffled that a school of that hierarchy would't admit on Merit for such a course. GRACIAS once again and I pray you excel in all your endeavours!!!

DrHesjay: Some of you guys who are my friends on BBM hav been asking about the courses that you will offer in 100level. I have decided to post it here so others can gain from whatever I will say on it. For those of you in Medicine,Anatomy or physiology, and even in most science courses, you will take 17courses in 100level, 9 in first semester and 8 in second semester. Below is a list of the courses(codes and titles) and their credit units in bracket.
Phy115(2)---Mechanics and Properties of Matter 1
Phy125(3)---Heat,sound and optics.
Chm101(3)---
Zly101(2)---Introuctory Ecology
Zly103(3)---Animal diversity
Plb101(3)---Cell Biology
Gns101(3)---Use of English.

Chm101 can be a very dangerous course; don’t joke with it. Go for classes, even when asked to come by 6:00am, just go. Your Chm101 note is also very important. You can use lamlad Chemistry textbook(utme), Fundamental University Chemistry by Abass Vol.1, and probably Schaum’s outlines for chemistry. With those textbooks and your maximum attention in class, you aresure of an A. You might decide to get past questions too, but to be frank, they were of no help to me for Chm101.

Phy115 is a very simple course, if you have a good foundation. You may pass without attending lectures sef. Phy125 is the actual wahala. It’s the toughest course I did in first semester. The lecturers are so wicked. They can bombard your life with assignments. The course is also very wide, so to pass well, start preparing immediately. For this course, you will need Nelkon/Parker Physics Text and Schaum’s outlines for college physics because the note won’t be of much help. The course is really hard oo, but an A is very possible. You also have to treat past questions for your physics. Treat enough questions. Try to get questions from any source(MSS o, fellowships oo, CMDA oo, anyhow). Just treat questions.

Zly 101 is an A course, not bulky at all. You can finish the note in a day if you are fast but when examscome, the questions are really scary. When I did mine, I was so sure of myself after I read it; but on getting to CBT, it was another thing. One indian lecturer like dat took us one of the topics and his questions were really tough, God knows where he got them from. All you need to pass Zly101 is the note.
Zly 103 is also an A course. Many people fail this course because they feel they have to understand it very well. Be not deceived brethren, Zly103 is all about your cramming abilities. Cram it well. The course deals with the study of the animal kingdom in a evolutionary approach i.e, the study of animals from the lowest phylum to the highest phylum. The school has a comprehensive text on the course. It goes for 400naira only. Read it well, cram it and woth God on your side, you’re a is sure.

Plb101 is the simplest 100level course apart from GNS sha.. You will see people having lots of 90s...
All you need on the course is the note. The lecturers are also very good. So attend the classes; it will really help. For those of you in the medial line, please take this course serious. It’s a good foundation for histology and biochem(some of the courses in your preclinics).

GNS is also an A course. All you need do is read the text. You will also take a 6-hour lecture on the use of library and you will be given a text also. Read both texts well.

The other 2 courses are practicals(You haveto be serious with them ooooo)..If care is not taken, they can guide your path out of medical school. So, you have to take them very serious. They canbe really disastrous. I know you’ll understand when you resume.

The 2nd semester courses are
Phy142(2)---Nuclear and atomic physics
Phy152(3)---Electricity and Magnetism.
Chm112(2)---Organic Chemistry
Chm132(2)---Inorganic Chemitsry
Zly106---Mammalian forms and functions.
GNS112---Use of English. ; and 2 practical courses
I won’t talk on them because I believe by then, you would have been used to the system things are run in school
Thank you so so much Dr hesjay. That was very enlightening. May you be blessed for ur effort. But i've got a qstn: i heard some 100level medical students will be dropped to BMS while some BMS students would be crossed to medicine in 200level. Pls elaborate more on this. Thanks.

@ EINSTEINPG. I also happen to possess this 'socializing' weakness u speak of. Even online, I tend to be reserved and introvertive in posting anything but i find it irrepressible to just read ur post and pass by without contributing my own little quota..
It is conspicously evident to any homo sapiens that you are either a computer genius/guru or something very akin to that. Your enviable mastery of the language and your programming write-up I read is neither inane nor brosque but very factual and expository.
I'm not really an ardent disciple of ur field but am concerned with the relevence of this jet-age computer ingenuity to the health sector particularly in Medicine. I attended intensive programming classes for some months but what always nagged at my subconscious was the way this vast knowledge could affect the medical world constructively.
Though in advanced countries, computer programming has made surgery an austere and less machiavellian task through CT(computer tomography) scan, MRI(magnetic Resonance Imagery) which projects 3D images of the area in question to mention but a few. BUT i envision a world where computers perform almost every surgery however mundane, that seem colossally impossible to man. I dream of a time when computer programmers/literates are heavily needed in all spheres of life, Where professionals and specialist who lack pragmatic computer and ICT knowledge are guillotined and replaced with super- precise, time-saving and cost-reduced computerised machines managed by qualified personnels.
I've got a lot to say but I guess i have to maintain brevity since some might see this whole thing as mumbo-jumbo. Sincerely,I would like to meet with you. I don't know if u are a student @ Unilorin but I was offered admission there (albeit a course i didn't choose). Pls u can add me on whatsapp- 08138888030; 2go Bethedoski23.
