On Thursday 4th of November, a fire broke out when a cooking gas truck at a gas station in Ilorin, Kwara State caught fire. Although the Kwara State Fire Service speedily intervened, two persons were severely injured.

On Monday, hundreds of students at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ijebu Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, were restricted from attending classes because they were wearing pam sandals.

According to Punch, the students were told to go home and wear shoes after being halted at the school’s Permanent Site gate in Ago-Iwoye.

A student identified as Durotimi described his ordeal, claiming that he missed lectures as a result of being prohibited from entering the school’s grounds due to his pam sandals.

He said, “It is disheartening. When we got to the school gate this morning, we discovered that the school management implemented an unknown policy asking students not to wear pam sandals and the like in the school environment except shoes.

“It’s so sad for a school like OOU with a very high reputation and standard implementing such a policy knowing full well the situation of things in the country. Not even everyone can afford a pair of shoes at the moment.

“Many of us had 08:00 a.m. classes and some of us were supposed to have tests this morning but when we got to the gate this morning we were delayed for over 2hrs. It even got to a point where they had to use a policeman just to make sure we didn’t enter the school.”

Another student, who simply identified as Ademola, said they were not given prior notice as to the draconian dress code after returning to the school since the eight-month-long ASUU strike.

He said, “We got to the school today and over a hundred of us were stopped at the school gate and asked to return home for wearing pam sandals. Sadly, we weren’t previously informed that palm sandals were no longer allowed on the school campus. This is really sad and unpalatable for the 21st century.”

Another student, Chidinma told our correspondent that she and other students were harassed by the school’s private security guards for putting on pam sandals, and they were sent back home.

“I’ve never seen this before. How do you force university students to not wear pam sandals but only shoes? This is uncalled for, and it’s against human decency and it’s an infringement on our rights. We hope that the school management would have a rethink,” she said.

When contacted, the school’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Adekunle Rasheed, justifying the policy, said it was enshrined in the school’s code of conduct.

Rasheed said, “The students were aware of this policy before now as it is enshrined in the school’s code of conduct. Also, they were earlier informed about this during the orientation programme last week.

“There are so many things not allowed on the school campus – tinting of hair, wearing of shorts, using tinted glasses for cars, and wearing of pam sandals, among others.”

Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, seems to be in disagreement as to which presidential candidate the group will endorse. Thav TV had earlier reported that the group had endorsed Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate.

However, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group and several South West leaders on Sunday, 30th October 2022, endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The endorsement took place during a meeting he had with the leaders of the organisation at Fasoranti’s residence in Akure, the Ondo State capital, although some members of the group, including Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and the Secretary-General Chief Sola Ebiseni, were absent at the meeting.

Adebanjo who was part of the faction of the group that had earlier declared support for Peter Obi, in a telephone interview with Punch on Sunday, said he was not supposed to be at the meeting in Akure, adding that his support for Obi was already known.

He said, “In the first place, I was not supposed to be there. In the second place, we have made our position clear. Pa Fasoranti asked me if I was coming, I said if he asked me to come. But tell him what the position of Afenifere is. Once he has done that, I’m not going into any controversy about that.”

“Afenifere has taken a stance to support Obi. Any other splinter or rebel group… I’m not going into any controversy about that. I regard that as a diversion. What we are going to do now is see that we succeed at the election.”

Fasoranti, who briefly prayed for the APC candidate, simply declared, “Tinubu will win the election.”

The organisation’s National Organising Secretary, Abagun Omololu, also issued a statement at the end of the meeting.

In attendance at the meeting were former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Retired Methodist Bishop, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu; National Secretary of APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore; General Secretary of Yoruba Council of Elders, Senator Cornelius Adebayo; former Governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande; and Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, who represented Governor Seyi Makinde.

Omololu explained that Tinubu briefed the gathering about his aspiration for the presidency and also presented his manifesto to Fasoranti.

But Omololu said the Afenifere leaders did not hesitate to endorse the former Lagos State governor after he proved beyond doubt that he would practice true federalism by giving states more control over internal affairs when elected.

His statement partly read, “Tinubu shared with us his vision of a greater and more prosperous Nigeria where democratic rights, rule of law, justice and fairness will reign supreme. He also gave assurance on steps to be taken to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties.

Falae, who decried the falling value of the naira, said he used all his life to serve Nigeria and in his old age, he does not want all he used his life for to be wasted.

He charged, “You have a lot of work to do, Nigeria has been turned down, I used to go to Lagos without any fear at the age of 14. You have to look into the issue of insecurity.

“They want to change currency it would have much pressure on naira because the election is nearer. Financial matters should be looked into, how you will do it, God will guide you. We will be available to advise you if you get there.

“When you become President please work to fix this country. We are here to offer advice. I am old and no longer looking for a job. We need to fix security and fix our economy. Our naira is almost becoming useless and will soon become N1, 000 to a dollar. We must change that. I know your ability. We will always be here to support and I wish you well. We will be here when you bring the trophy home by the grace of God.”

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives have discovered and sealed an illegal petroleum products dump in the Federal Capital Territory.
The event was confirmed on Sunday 30th of October by Olusola Odumosu, NSCDC's spokesman, in a post on the Facebook page of his organization.
In the post, Odumosu stated that the Commandant General's Special Intelligence Squad was responsible for finding and shutting the illicit oil dump.
The post read: “over 54,000 liters of suspected vandalized, illegally refined and adulterated Automotive Gas Oil, one pumping machine, one generator, two surface tanks containing suspected adulterated and illegally refined AGO were recovered.”
The post added two empty surface tanks, four empty trucks, one truck containing suspected vandalized, illegally refined, and adulterated AGO, two drums of AGO, two different waybills, two different vehicle plates, one pump action, one Dane-gun, and six cartridges were recovered.

At about 09:00 p.m. on Sunday, a deadly accident close to the Four-Corners Enugu left no less than 13 passengers burned to death.
The unfortunate 14-seater bus, which was allegedly traveling from Imo State to Adamawa, is believed to have collided with a trailer before catching fire.
According to Daily Post, all the passengers except one were said to have burnt beyond recognition in the accident, which occurred at the Enugu end of the Enugu/Port Harcourt expressway.
Only one passenger survived the auto crash, with varying versions of how he escaped. Some said sympathizers rescued him; others said he jumped out of the vehicle from the window.
According to the information, the only survivor is currently being treated at the Emergency Unit of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla.

Only hours later at about 09:11 a.m., the Labour Party’s presidential candidate released a statement via his official Twitter account distancing himself from the LP manifesto in circulation.
He said: “We have not formally released our Manifesto. I will do so personally. It seems an earlier draft copy under review has made its way into the public space. Until I release the approved and final draft, please disregard what is being circulated.”
However, at about 10:48 a.m., the verified Twitter page of the Labour Party tweeted in a now-deleted tweet saying that the manifesto had been released.

Gunmen believed to be Islamic terrorists attacked Barbaji village burning roughly 10 homes, throwing the Dan Jamfari Community in the Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State into chaos forcing the locals to flee their homes.
Dr. Saleh Jili, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, acknowledged the situation while speaking to journalists on Friday and condemned the incident.

While noting that the agency sympathized with the victims and had delivered supplies to them, Jili said that the Kano government would use all of its resources to find the attackers and bring them to justice.
A resident, Malam Magaji Audu, who spoke to New Telegraph, claimed the assailants were armed with cutlasses.
According to him, “More than 200 of them invaded the village in the night and went from house to house claiming they were looking for their stolen motorcycle.

“The attackers tried to stab me in the presence of my family members and I refused to produce my children whom they claimed to have stolen their motorcycle as demanded."
Audu explained that the assailants returned the day after and set his house and others on fire while his family members escaped.
“The hoodlums carted away food items, chickens, turkey, farming equipment and destroyed 10 houses within the village,’’ he said.
Alhaji Muhammad Maharazu, the district chief of Rogo, who also confirmed the attack, praised the disaster management organization for its thoughtful gift of relief supplies.
Maharazu who was represented by his secretary Alhaji Bashir Tsoho, said the Emir of Karaye, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II, had rendered all the necessary assistance to the victims and also reported the incident to the state government.

According to Fitch Solutions Country Risk and Industry Research, Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, would triumph in the 2023 presidential election.
However, the company, a subsidiary of Fitch Ratings, an international credit rating organisation, also predicted that Tinubu's victory will lead to societal unrest and riots due to his party's Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“We maintain our view that the ruling party’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the candidate most likely to win the presidential election as a split opposition vote will favour the APC,” the report stated.
“Protests and social discontent are likely to ramp up in the aftermath of a Tinubu win since this would end the recent trend of the presidency alternating between Muslims and Christians.
“Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, there has been an informal agreement that resulted in the presidency alternating between northern and southern states, as well as between Christians and Muslims.
“A win for Tinubu would break with this unwritten tradition and likely fuel sentiment of perceived marginalisation among Christians.”
The firm stated that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), would not win despite some polls forecasting that he would emerge president.
While referring to a 2020 World Bank report, Fitch said only 36 per cent of Nigerians use the internet where there is huge traction to Obi.
“Surveys showing that Obi is ahead of his opponents, Bola Tinubu (APC) and Atiku Abubakar (PDP), were mostly based on responses gathered online,” it reads.
“Since only 36.0% of Nigerians use the Internet (World Bank, 2020), we believe that these results are skewed towards urban, affluent voters who are most likely to support Obi. We also highlight that these polls suggest that a large share of voters remain undecided.”

After being wounded during a deadly knife assault in an Italian supermarket, Arsenal footballer Pablo Mari underwent successful surgery on Friday 28th October, according to his Serie A club Monza.
Monza confirmed to AFP that “everything is OK” with the 29-year-old Spanish defender, who Arsenal loaned to Monza this summer.
Treatment was performed on Mari at Milan's Niguarda hospital after he was wounded in the back on Thursday while out with his wife and son.
Monza projected that he would spend two to three days in the hospital.
Punch Reports that Mari was one of several people attacked in a Carrefour supermarket in Assago, on the outskirts of Milan in northern Italy, by a man apparently suffering from psychological problems who killed one man after grabbing a knife from a shelf.
Monza said in a tweet they were “united in grief” with the family of the supermarket’s employee whose life was taken.
In the attack by a 46-year-old Italian, four other persons were hurt. The attacker however was arrested by police, reportedly after being disarmed by former Napoli and Inter Milan defender Massimo Taranto.

The Kwara State Government has provided free transportation to all interested students of tertiary institutions in the Northern region of the country upon the start of academic activities as a sign of its favorable disposition toward the predicament of students.

This comes after the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ eight-month industrial action was put on hold.

At a meeting on Monday 24th of October in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Alabi Abolore, revealed this.

A statement provided to the media on Tuesday 25th of October and signed by the ministry’s press secretary, Mansurat Amuda-kannike, said: “The Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led Administration is extending the dividends of democracy to Kwara State Students in tertiary institutions across the country.”

He clarified that concerned students who are traveling to the North are required to show up for quick documentation on the day of their departure at the Ministry of Tertiary Education’s facilities, located along Offa Road, GRA, Ilorin, on Saturday, October 29, 2022, by 6:30 am.

The commissioner disclosed further that the Ministry is also on the verge of concluding the bursary disbursement when online portal registration of would-be beneficiaries is opened.

A bus conveying passengers along the Kaduna-Kachia road lost control and struck a pole, killing five people.
Mr. Joseph Amos, one of the surviving passengers currently receiving treatment in a hospital, in Kaduna while speaking said: “we boarded a bus from Kaduna going to Kafachan. We were eight inside the bus when suddenly, the bus lost control and hit a pole wire. Five persons died immediately.”
He said that the driver was cautioned about the terrible road, bend, and several potholes as he was driving at a high speed, but he disregarded their advice.
Daily Post reports that the deceased were transported to a morgue. The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Kaduna, could not pick his call for confirmation as at the time of filling this report.

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has threatened to resign if anyone can come forward to prove that he promised him or her the governorship seat and didn’t honour his words.

Wike emphasized that he never made anyone promises to guarantee them winning the governorship seat, saying that God alone has all authority.

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has said that Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, does not want him to campaign for his election.

The governor made the claim on Monday the 24th of October, 2022 in Port Harcourt at the opening of the PDP campaign council and the commissioning of the PDP governorship campaign office.

According to Gov. Wike, Atiku appointed some members of the PDP in Rivers State into his campaign council without the “governor’s contribution”. He said it means Atiku doesn’t want him and the Rivers people to campaign for him.
He said: “the presidential candidate entered Rivers State and picked those he wants to pick without the contribution of the governor.”

An ex-convict has been accused of raping a 12-year-old girl Janet Fakeye to death in Ogun State.

The ex-convict identified as Mercy Orija was said to have fled shortly after the incident at Fehintoluwa community, in Idiya, Abeokuta-North Local Government Area of Ogun.

The fleeing suspect was previously convicted of attacking a Point of Service (POS) operator in the neighborhood last year, according to reports by DAILY POST.

According to the reports, the suspect forced the victim who was a Junior Secondary School student at the Army Day Secondary School, Alamala, Abeokuta, into a residence when the victim was on an errand. It was gathered that Orija tied the teenager’s hands, and her legs and covered her mouth before forcing himself on her.

The victim’s father, Sanjo Fakeye, confirmed the incident and said he is requesting justice from the authorities.

He said: “I gave Janet money to buy detergent to wash her school uniform. When she didn’t return after a long time, I went to her friend’s place to ask for my daughter, but she said she had not seen her.

“I later went to report at the police station around 8 p.m. that my daughter was missing. As we were heading towards the police station, I received a call from the community that they had found the dead body of my daughter.

“My daughter was raped to death by Mercy after he tied her hands and her legs, and covered her mouth.

“The remains of my daughter were dumped into another building beside his house after he committed the offence. I want Justice,” he said amidst tears.

The father explained that the detergent and blood stains were seen in the suspect’s house, saying he ran away through the back door.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State said the police were on the trail of the suspect, confirming that the suspect was recently released from prison custody.

“It is true that we have launched a manhunt for the suspect. The suspect is an ex-convict who was just released from prison.

“He would soon be arrested and be made to face justice,” Oyeyemi said.

On Sunday the 23rd of October, members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Katsina State who had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been reassured that they will be treated equally in the State.

Alhaji Yakubu Lado-Danmarke, the party’s candidate for governor, made the promise on Sunday in Jibia in front of 12,936 APC members from Kaita and Jibia local government areas. He also promised the locals that if elected, he would bring back order, peace, and security within a hundred days.

In his opinion, “wickedness, hatred, and bad government policies” had hindered business activities in the areas.

He said: “By God’s grace if we are elected, we will ensure that Jibia returns to its past glory as the window of economic activities in the entire country.

He urged them to work hard for the party’s success in the forthcoming 2023 general elections in the state.
