Thav TV Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stole the show at the event organised to celebrate the national award given to the President of the African Export-Import Bank, Prof. Benedict Oramah. In a viral video, former President Olusegun Obasanjo was seen offering his seat to Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, that is calling up Obi who was sitting at table nine, and then leading him to table one. This has stirred multiple reactions, mostly positive as the former president did not just give up his seat, but as Obasanjo went forward to pick the former Peter Obi from his previous chair, he said, “In the presence of Nigerians,” and after leading Obi to table one, he declared, “My job is done,” as the audience applauded in approval. It is of note to recall that the former president is yet to endorse a presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections; however, as speculations go Obi might be his preferred candidate. Prior to the event, the Labour Party flagbearer had been involved in a series of closed-door meetings with the former president. Obasanjo also took part in Obi’s meeting with Governor Nyesom Wike and his group in London recently. https://thavmedia.com/endorsement-or-coincidence-my-job-is-done-obasanjo-says-as-he-gives-up-seat-for-peter-obi-at-event/ |

Thav TV The Sao Paulo State court in Brazil has fined Apple Inc. $19 million, which is about 100 million reais, for selling iPhones without chargers. The lawsuit which was filed by The Association of Borrowers, Consumers and Taxpayers, argued that the company commits ‘abusive practices’ by selling its flagship product without a charger. The Brazilian court however, on Thursday, 14th October 2022 ruled against Apple, Reuters reports. The court also ruled that battery chargers must come with new iPhones sold in the country, although Apple has said it will appeal the decision, arguing that the practice had the purpose of reducing carbon emissions. "It is evident that, under the justification of a 'green initiative,' the defendant imposes on the consumer a required purchase of charger adaptors that were previously supplied along with the product," said the court's decision. Brazil’s justice ministry earlier slapped a separate fine of nearly $2.5 million on Apple in September over the same issue and barred the US tech giant from selling its iPhone 12 and 13 models without chargers. Recall that Apple Inc. had in September 2022 launched its newest iPhone 14 series comes with only a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, but no charger, which has been the new practice of the company starting with the 2020 launch of the iPhone 12 lineup. https://thavmedia.com/apple-fined-19-million-by-brazilian-court-for-abusive-practices/ |
Thav TV After having called off their 8-month long strike on Friday, the 14th of October 2022, The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised fresh concerns. In a press statement signed by Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of the union, the union said that the issues in its disputes with the Federal Government were not well addressed; this revelation has caused panic amongst students as it is unclear what would follow these words. However, the union in its press statement noted that the issues in its disputes with the Federal Government were not well addressed. The statement partly read: “The National Executive Council of ASUU held an emergency meeting at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja, on Thursday, October 13, 2022.” “The National Industrial Court, in its wisdom, gave an order compelling ASUU to resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit. Given the nature of the order, and in the opinion of our counsel, there was the need to appeal the interlocutory injunction granted against our union at the Court of Appeal.” “The Court of Appeal acknowledged the validity of the grounds of the union’s appeal but still upheld the order of the lower court and ordered our union to comply with the ruling of the lower court as condition precedent for the appeal to be heard.” “NEC noted the series of meetings with the leadership of the House of Representatives led by the Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, as well as intervention efforts of other well-meaning Nigerians both within and outside the government and the progress made so far.” Speaking further on the status of negotiations, the union said, “While appreciating the commendable efforts of the leadership of the House of Representatives and other patriotic Nigerians who waded into the matter, NEC noted with regrets that the issues in dispute were yet to be satisfactorily addressed.” “However, as a law-abiding union and in deference to appeals by President Muhammadu Buhari, and in recognition of the efforts of Hon. Gbajabiamila, and other well-meaning Nigerians, ASUU NEC resolved to suspend the strike action embarked upon on February 14, 2022. Consequently, all members of ASUU are hereby directed to resume all services hitherto withdrawn with effect from 12:01 on Friday, October 14, 2022.” https://thavmedia.com/ASUU-strike-ASUU-says-all-disputes-were-not-addressed-causes-fresh-panic/ |
