Clarathomp: @ Betterchoice,
This is what I am thinking. Lagos may be a better option than all the other locations because it is a commercial city with more work opportunities.
1. Do you have family or friends, in Lagos you can stay with for a short while? Accommodation will be a major factor to consider.
2. Put together a resume (CV) and a cover letter, start unsolicited applications to targeted organizations with good reputations. You'll need to go to company websites and click on their careers section for an email address, where you can send your application materials to (Pls do not send your credentials, send only your resume as an attachment)
You need to be proactive about this. Some companies will have the address listed as careers@autonation.com but when you send a mail it may bounce back. Try hr@autonation.com or recruitment@autonation.com
Your cover letter should be short & simple. 3 short paragraphs at most with your attached resume.Try this with organizations like The Lagos Business School, Private Universities, Insurance firms, Medium sized oil & gas firms and recruitment firms.
For recruitment firms, the wording should be slightly different. Try the big law firms too, with your 2:1 result they'll snatch you up quickly. I think the big law firms pay well e.g Aelex, Paul Usoro & Co, Banwo & Ighodalo, etc Thanks. |

AgamaProf: If you stay back in Nigeria, with the 2m you can open a law firm or set up a business. If you plan traveling out, I think you should start writing GRE and IELTS and score very high in them. There are scholarships for most schools in the US or canada. If you do secure scholarship, I don't know if they will allow you work. Just do more search. My Advise is, if you have the 2m handy, pls do business in Nigeria. If you don't have the 2m handy, pls, start writing GRE AND IELTS Thanks for your input. |

apolonius: Canada is great for lawyers, but you need to get licensed to practice and explore the vast opportunities. The process of licensing takes some time, as you need to get your legal education from Nigeria assessed to enable them determine the number of exams you need to write. Then, there is the Bar exams and other processes including articling. It takes time, resources, study and all. It is doable as I and some others are currently in the process. Of course, we are Permanent Residents.
Canadian universities offer LLM programs tailored to meet the requirements for getting licensed. Getting into any of those will help make the process easy.
I studied in the UK, but going through the processes like my friends from Nigeria and common law jurisdictions around the world.
Canada is a great place, I feel so at home than I ever did studying law in the U.K. to PhD level. I know and see many people who came from Naija a year or two ago doing so well. The government invests in many schemes to make settling down here quite easy. Mentoring schemes, settler programmes and agencies, agencies that recruit for jobs, teach skills that help get into work fast and all.
Yet, be realistic in your plans as it takes 1-3 years to settle fully into any of these Western countries and better explore opportunities for better life. But there are many survival opportunities for the earlier days.
Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks! |

lawyer: Minister Shittu abeg finish this Claro so that e go make you get your sense back! Betterchoice: I am a fresh lawyer, currently residing in the East and serving there too.
I will be rounding off NYSC in a month's time and deciding on the next step to take or where to settle down has been hanging on my neck like an albatross.
I have been thinking myself to stupor in the past one year consequent upon which I have lost zeal in innumerable things.
There is pressure on me to raise funds because of younger siblings and other family issues.
Working in a law firm doesn't seem to be an option as most pay a pittance. It can be abysmally frustrating.
I am wondering if there are other things I could to make extra income.
Again, I am considering settling down in Onitsha, Awka or Enugu. Enugu is my home state though.
Or leaving the East for Abuja or Lagos.
I have been indecisive respecting this and it weighs me down.
All responses especially from lawyers too will be appreciated.
ASIDE: I have a 2:1 from the varsity and the Law School. |

socialmediaman: Good. Since you’re a medical professional and your job is in U.K., from the information you provided I assume that you’ll be earning at least £35,000 before taxes. Depending on your standard of living, taxes, rent and bills etc, you may be able to save up to £5,000 annually. Note that This would be much lower if you had a stay home or student non-working wife and child. If you’re also ambitious you’ll probably see the need to enroll in more study to upgrade your income and level in the organization, and that is your introduction to debt management in form of student loans etc.
This is just a rough estimate and perhaps doesn’t give a near true picture of the reality, but I just want to give you an informed idea of what your decision parameters should be based upon. The fact that the income is much higher does not mean the whole money is all yours to save, not at all. But overall, you’ll have a much better value for your hard work.
As per making money quick and starting your own business, you need to give that time. By the end of the first year, you’ll see how much is in your bank account and you’ll realize that there’s a good reason people went there but didn’t run back quick with trailer load of money after the first year.
All the best as you make the best decision for yourself. 5000 pounds annually? Isn't that too poor? |

Earthbound: Sorry, I couldn't read your post with a straight face.
Unlike a lot of professions here in Naija, being a lawyer is very, very lucrative if you know what you're doing. While relocating abroad is a good idea, considering the state of things here, 2 million Naira is far from enough. know what you are doing What exactly please? Any pointer or clue please? |

ERONX: I'm a legal attorney in New York... And the legal market in the U.S is quite lucrative and competitive, 2 million naira won't get u anywhere... You need something huge financially, you can apply for your masters in any cheap university and also enroll for the American Bar Exams. Someone made reference to accent being a snag and people not wanting to hire you because of same or because of being black. I have a distant cousin in NY, he made an unsuccessful attempt at NY Bar Exams last 2 years and got depressed. He owed rent then because he reduced working hours so as to prepare for exams. He now works with an Insurance Company. Generally could you give brief insight into what the practice is like there please? |

This section has been very helpful.
I am a young lawyer and on the verge of rounding off my NYSC.
I have been thinking of how to secure a good future hence have been considering migrating to Canada or the USA.
Law is not a STEM course and switching career may not be easy at all.
I am wondering if there are opportunities for Lawyers in Canada or the USA (or even New Zealand, Australia.)
I am looking at migrating via Masters degree --- that''s if I can gain a full or partial scholarship with 3.9 CGPA on a 5 point scale or migrating through Canadian FSW.
Or do I just stay back in Nigeria?
I can raise 2 million naira.
Suggestions needed please. I am tired. Seriously tired because the future looks bleak. |
