flexyrule: My brother... It's terrible.
Yesterday, I sat infront of a DIG who bluntly told me that the police can't do anything in a case of obtaining money under false pretense involving a renowned fraudster.
He said, if you go to the court, you might not get justice. Here at the police, we can't do anything as the matter is not within our jurisdiction.
The most a nothing part was that the criminal even came with a lawyer... He may have been compromised. Again, some of the police men don't know the law. They may also want to use this line- it's a civil case to allow the criminal escape when they have been bribed. It's terrible. Check if you can use the Efcc or the AG's office of that state. Civil transactions can amount to criminal-- like in obtaining by false pretences. |

laivwire: If anything, buying and selling is a business that had remained resilient in the Nigerian economy from ages past. You just need the right business mix of your marketing Ps.
If you're inclined to earn USD, perhaps you can try - investing in US stock - to start an exportation business in agro commodities - master a hard skill you can offer virtually for USD or better still double down on a niche within Law: Intellectual property, Technology or something else. thanks for your input. |

I am a lawyer. And I have always wanted to earn a good living for myself. In 2018, I created topics here seeking advice on what to do especially regarding travelling abroad. Here is a link to one of the topics: https://www.nairaland.com/4743326/what-young-lawyer-canada-usaI later decided to stay back in Nigeria as I started making some money from my business and other legal hustles. In fact, I made my first one million through referrals from Nairaland here.
Right now, a lot has changed. Earnings have reduced and with dollar at 1250, many of us have little purchasing power now. We all have been impoverished. 5k in 2018 has same purchasing power of 15k now. 2004 Uber tokunbo corolla sells for 5m+ now. That's a car 20 years old. Same car was 1.5m in 2018. It's terrible. Dollar is projected to still get to 2000 naira by end of the year. The signs aren't good at all. I would have applied for USA F1 student visa but the rate of denial is so high. If I don't earn in usd now, I would be worse off. WHAT I WANT:I don't need financial help. All I want are avenues, programmes or things I can engage in to earn in usd while still here in Nigeria. I don't need to be spoon fed. I just need pointers to widen my horizon. I am ready to pay for some courses if need be. Also, I would accept suggestions if there are other avenues that would make USA japa easier. Scammers or those with gimmicks should steer clear please as you can't get a dime from me.
Don't waste your time, please. Thanks! |

I have been in dilemma since finishing NYSC last year.
I feel impelled to further education and can raise circa 3m naira.
I don't know if one can conclude an LLM (ie Masters in Law) in any Nigerian University under 18 months.
I feel like starting from there since I have been indecisive about Canadian Emigration.
Thank you!

apolonius: Canada is great for lawyers, but you need to get licensed to practice and explore the vast opportunities. The process of licensing takes some time, as you need to get your legal education from Nigeria assessed to enable them determine the number of exams you need to write. Then, there is the Bar exams and other processes including articling. It takes time, resources, study and all. It is doable as I and some others are currently in the process. Of course, we are Permanent Residents.
Canadian universities offer LLM programs tailored to meet the requirements for getting licensed. Getting into any of those will help make the process easy.
I studied in the UK, but going through the processes like my friends from Nigeria and common law jurisdictions around the world.
Canada is a great place, I feel so at home than I ever did studying law in the U.K. to PhD level. I know and see many people who came from Naija a year or two ago doing so well. The government invests in many schemes to make settling down here quite easy. Mentoring schemes, settler programmes and agencies, agencies that recruit for jobs, teach skills that help get into work fast and all.
Yet, be realistic in your plans as it takes 1-3 years to settle fully into any of these Western countries and better explore opportunities for better life. But there are many survival opportunities for the earlier days.
Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks a lot. Do you think coming as a PR is better than coming with student visa.? And what exactly do Lawyers do as our Laws are different apart from areas like Contract etc |
