The first-ever Aswad Film Festival is set to take place in Dubai from January 24 – 26, 2025, celebrating Black American, European, and African cinema while spotlighting the rapidly growing film industries on a global platform. This pioneering festival aims to showcase the richness and diversity of storytelling in Black American, European, and African cinema through a vibrant programme that includes screenings of 12 outstanding feature films, industry roundtables, panels, workshops, and networking events. Attendees can look forward to live music performances, a glamorous red carpet event, and a gala dinner, culminating in an exclusive yacht excursion. Chukwuma Jason Njoku, an African technology and entertainment entrepreneur and Aswad Film Festival Chair, expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “Aswad is not just a film festival; it’s a celebration of our stories and our culture. We aim to create a platform that amplifies Black voices in cinema while fostering connections within the industry. The Black American, European, and African film industries are experiencing unprecedented growth, and it’s time we had a world-class festival to showcase our talents.“ Aswad is focused on four key pillars: creative and commercial sustainability, cross-continent and global connectedness, reasserting African control of their own stories in the new anti-DEI world, and the celebration of Black excellence. These pillars underscore the festival’s commitment to not only showcasing Black American, European, and African cinema but also empowering filmmakers and industry professionals to thrive in the global marketplace. Recent data underscores the festival’s relevance in today’s entertainment landscape. In the United States, films with casts that were 31% to 40% people of colour were the most successful at the box office in 2023. However, there is still work to be done, as Black actors play only 11% of leading film roles, despite making up 13.4% of the US population. The African film industry itself is experiencing significant growth, with a 2022 UNESCO report noting substantial increases in production, though emphasising the need for infrastructure investment. Netflix reported over 126 million views for top African titles in 2023, highlighting the increasing global interest in African narratives. MultiChoice produced over 6,500 hours of local content in the past year, while Showmax experienced a remarkable 50% customer base growth in 2024. Njoku added, “With Aswad, we’re creating a space where filmmakers, industry professionals, and cinema lovers can come together to celebrate and elevate black voices in storytelling. We’re not just showcasing films; we’re building bridges and opening doors for collaboration on a global scale.” The festival comes at a time when the industry is recognizing the financial value of diversity. A recent study estimates that addressing racial inequities in the film and TV industry could unlock more than $10 billion in annual revenues, equivalent to a 7% expansion in baseline industry revenues. “As we embark on this journey with Aswad,” Njoku concluded, “we are not only celebrating black voices but also paving the way for future generations of storytellers. This is more than just a festival; it’s a movement that invites everyone to be part of something truly special.” Tickets for the festival are available at various price points to accommodate different levels of access. The Silver pass starts at $135 and includes access to all screenings and celebrity meet-and-greets. The exclusive Diamond pass is priced at $1,368 and offers backstage access along with invitations to the gala dinner and yacht party. Imperial Citizenship boasts a successful track record, having secured over 2,000 approvals for clients seeking alternative citizenship and residency pathways. Their partnerships with over 15 governments globally provide a diverse portfolio of investment programs that comply with international regulations. "Nigeria's position as a major African economic powerhouse, coupled with its burgeoning HNWI population, presents a significant opportunity," Mr. Zaid Al Hindi, Founder and CEO of Imperial Citizenship. "Our presence in Lagos allows us to directly serve this growing segment, offering them strategic solutions for global asset diversification, optimised investment opportunities, and enhanced global mobility." The continent is witnessing a surge in HNWIs, creating a lucrative market for CRBI firms like Imperial Citizenship. Economic recovery is expected to continue beyond this year, with growth projections reaching 4.0 percent in 2025. Imperial Citizenship caters specifically to investment-savvy individuals from these countries by offering residency programs that often require investments in real estate, government bonds, or business ventures. “The launch in Lagos is a viable investment that can provide attractive returns while simultaneously qualifying clients for residency and potential future citizenship, depending on the chosen program”, Zaid adds. Imperial Citizenship leverages direct government partnerships. This ensures transparency, legality, and efficiency throughout the application process, a critical factor for investors seeking secure and reliable options for their wealth. Speaking on Imperial Citizenship’s approach to CBRI, Zaid says “we go beyond simply offering programs. We provide dedicated advisors who understand the unique needs and risk tolerance of each client. Residents of Port Harcourt and Nigerians across the country are sharing details on their life expectancy in order to raise more awareness for the health, economic and environmental crisis that is the deadly soot pollution in Rivers State’s capital. Having been diagnosed with several soot-related illnesses like respiratory, skin, reproductive, and other life-threatening conditions, thousands of Port Harcourt residents are coming together through the launch of the crowdsourced website SootCity to call the Government to action and raise awareness of the urgent issue. Sandra Hart, a resident of Port Harcourt, who lost consciousness following an acute asthmatic attack exacerbated by the air pollution caused by the soot said, “I am impressed with the coordination that has gone into raising awareness of soot in Port Harcourt over the last few years. Having been in and out of the hospital constantly and surviving a coma, I want Nigerians and particularly residents of Port Harcourt to understand why we need to make sure our Government puts an end to illegal refining of oil once and for all.” According to Dr Bieye Renner Briggs, a Public Health Physician and an Environmental Advocate in Port Harcourt, “most people living in the affected communities know that soot is bad, but just how worse things can get is what is unknown to them. Nigerians In Port Harcourt, are daily being diagnosed with and dying from soot-related illnesses like birth defects, cancerous growths, miscarriages, and irritations of the eye, nose, throat, and skin.” Eugene Abels the Founder of The Extra Step Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation based in Port Harcourt says, “After 60 years of Rivers State being the hub of the hydrocarbon industry and with the damaging activities of the non-state actors, the Rivers State Government with external support must lead the charge to audit the damage to our flora and fauna particularly the respiratory health of the residents of Port Harcourt and other host communities from the activities of legal and illegal refining of crude oil so as to curb the rate of cancers and renal failure amongst children, indigent people and pregnant women. It is also our belief that even the United Nations Ogoni Clean Up report is obsolete and should be updated by the Federal Government to reflect the current realities which a 10-year-old report does not capture.” “We need to be very clear on the true impact of the damage soot causes and how the crisis is slowly killing residents, in a way that is candid and easy to comprehend by all, that’s why SootCity is very jarring,” Steve Babaeko, the Founder and CEO of X3M Ideas added. Through the use of data gathered from years of research across multiple countries, and bodies like the United Nations, World Health Organisation and German Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt) - SootCity.com developed by Steve’s company, X3M Ideas, accurately determines the life expectancy of each user and with their consent makes them public to raise awareness and jolt the Government into action. With direct letters written to all Senators from Rivers state through the website, SootCity aims to proffer solutions to the grave issue. Some of these solutions include the collaboration of government at all levels with all stakeholders on clear and strategic activities like the identification and containment of pollution sites; ensuring that IOCs conduct their businesses in line with international best practices; and restructuring and empowerment of environmental and security agencies with the finance and equipment to implement and enforce environmental laws amongst others. A deep black powdery substance consisting largely of amorphous carbon, soot is produced by the incomplete burning of organic matter. In Port Harcourt, black soot has become a health and environmental hazard as a result of illegal oil refining and bunkering activities in the region. |
Increasing women's access to online learning has the potential to improve their economic prospects and open up new career paths, according to a report from International Finance Corporation (IFC). The study found that one in three Nigerian women surveyed reported positive career or business outcomes after taking online courses, including finding a new job, setting up a business, or improving job performance. The research is part of the “Women and Online Learning in Emerging Markets” report from IFC, created in partnership with the global online learning platform, Coursera, and the European Commission. The report also found that in Nigeria one job is created for every 30 people trained on Coursera. The study uses data from Coursera to quantify women’s participation in online education, identify challenges to greater participation, and provide recommendations for the public and private sector to improve life-long learning opportunities and outcomes for women. “This report, conducted through IFC’s Digital2Equal initiative, highlights the importance of technology and online learning in boosting access to new skills and creating opportunities for women and entrepreneurs more broadly. IFC is committed to empowering more women in business by leveraging the digital economy,” said Kalim M. Shah, IFC’s Senior Country Manager for Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. “Our research highlights the potential for online learning to bridge the gender gap in Nigeria by providing women with access to in-demand skills and new career opportunities. It also shows that online education can not only benefit individual women, but also drive economic growth through job creation,” said Kais Zribi, General Manager for the Middle East and Africa at Coursera. “Governments, businesses and institutions must work closely to address some of the key challenges facing women in Nigeria. Public-private partnerships will be critical to unlock women’s full potential and create more opportunities.” Among other key findings in Nigeria: Women’s enrollment in online education has accelerated but a gender gap still persists. In Nigeria, men make up the majority of online learners. However, over the past five years the proportion of female learners has grown from 26% in 2017 to 32% in 2022. Women were twice as likely as men to cite family and childcare obligations as the reason behind their motivation to learn online. 27% of women were motivated by the pandemic and 20% of women were motivated by personal preferences. Credential acceptance holds the key to attracting more online learners, with more than 50% surveyed citing it as a key reason to enroll. Nigerian learners also rate the credibility of online learning highest when compared with learners from other countries in the study. Online learning can lead to career outcomes and economic gains in Nigeria. 38% of online learners in Nigeria reported a positive job or business outcome as a result of online learning. 27% of women built skills to prepare for a new job application. 14% of women employees received a new job or a promotion. 23% of women improved their performance in their existing job or businesses. Women entrepreneurs in Nigeria had particularly stand-out results: 70% of women who joined online learning with the goal to set up and manage their own business reported achieving their goal. In Nigeria, one job is created for every 30 people trained on Coursera. Improved skills and qualifications create new jobs directly through the creation of new businesses. Jobs are also created indirectly through increased consumption and economic activity driven by higher incomes. Online learning has the potential to further reach underserved populations in Nigeria. The largest category of learners in Nigeria (36%) report a monthly household income below the 50th percentile at 55,000 Nigerian naira. Over a quarter of women reported a need to overcome connectivity challenges, yet the interest in online learning is still strong: 65% of women and 76% of men report that they will continue learning online exclusively in the future. The “Women and Online Learning in Emerging Markets” study draws on data from nearly 97 million Coursera learners in over 190 countries, surveys of nearly 10,000 learners across Egypt, India, Mexico, and Nigeria who completed at least one lesson on the platform, and interviews with over 70 global learners and industry experts. |

How X3M Ideas Is Standing Up For Women in Nigerian Advertising If you ever watched Mad Men, that is the quintessential serial tv drama centered on the ad industry which objectified and disrespected women -- then from reading the headline you can already tell where this article is going, but for the lucky ones who cannot be bothered to hold a remote, please continue reading. The conversation around harmful gender stereotypes in the media, marketing, and communications industries has been raging since the second wave of the feminist movement hit in the 60s. Before this, men had the advantage of being the center of attention when it came to issues of job opportunities, professional courtesy, and basic human regard. A recent Gender Equality Attitudes study by UN Women in Nigeria revealed that 54% of respondents believe media in Nigeria (television, advertisements, or public communication) only portrays women and men in certain roles, and on the flip side, almost 40% of people believe that for the same job, men are paid more than women. That’s why it is important that UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women recently launched the Nigeria chapter of the Unstereotype Alliance - a global coalition committed to ending harmful stereotypes in media and advertising. In actualising this goal, Nigeria’s number one ad agency X3M Ideas will play a major role in establishing the UN Women Nigerian chapter alongside other notable names such as Guinness Nigeria, First Bank of Nigeria, SO&U LTD, and Unilever Nigeria. X3M Ideas will leverage its wealth of influence and reach to use advertising as a force for progress by depicting positive portrayals of women and girls, and ensure the industry rejects all harmful stereotypes, including gender stereotypes.

PMI Announces Virtual Africa Conference 2021 on Saturday, 4 September Now in its sixth year, Project Management Institute's (PMI) Virtual Conference on 4 September will provide learning and networking opportunities for 'Africans to learn from Africans'. With PMOE (Project Management-Oriented Employment) opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa predicted to grow at 40% from 2019 to 2030* and the largest globally, PMI Africa Conference is open to Pan-African and global audiences keen to learn how changemakers and project professionals from across the continent are seizing this incredible growth opportunity. "As a virtual event, this year's Africa Conference on 4 September is an incredible opportunity for learning and professional development open to all changemakers in Africa and around the world. The theme of this year's conference - 'Africa: An Ecosystem of Changemakers' – could, therefore, not be more relevant. Changemakers are the many people who need project-based skills and insights to get work done, tackle their challenges, secure career opportunities and realise their ambitions to improve livelihoods". Said George Asamani, Business Development Lead, PMI Sub-Saharan Africa. Changemakers and Project Professionals will hear perspectives from thought leaders and practitioners on opportunities across the continent and the skills that will continue growing in demand for project professionals. For example, findings from PMI's 2021 Talent Gap Report has revealed that the global economy needs 25 million new project professionals by 2030 to help organisations turn their biggest ideas into reality. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the potential for economic expansion in the long term is encouraging. Building on the success of last year’s conference which attracted more than 2,000 delegates, this year’s virtual conference is expected to attract more changemakers and project professionals than ever. The population of Africa has grown rapidly over the past century, making it the second most populated continent, with around 1.37bn people and a growth rate of more than 2.5% per year. This makes the continent fertile ground for new projects and investments. The conference will provide hands-on, practical information and insights from keynote and session speakers selected for their expertise and passion. Included in the programme will be Desmond Ovbiagele, award-winning Nigerian film director and producer of The Milkmaid Movie, who will share insights on leading projects in the world of cinema. Renowned professor and organisational theorist Eddie Obeng will conclude the conference with a closing keynote on ‘Leading together to Successful Change’, highlighting how practitioners can harness the opportunities of our changing, complex, and ambiguous world through interdependent innovation and project delivery. Africa’s young population will inevitably reshape the world of project management. For this reason, we have included a dedicated track focusing on youth enablement. One of the speakers for the youth track will be Aya Chebbi, the first African Union Youth Envoy, and she will speak on Intergenerational Co-Leadership for Africa’s transformation. Participation in the conference will open opportunities for delegates to learn about the latest best practices, the challenges facing professionals and strategies being put in place to meet Africa’s demanding environment. Networking opportunities and the chance to interact with speakers will add significant value for delegates attending this year’s virtual conference. With the continent emerging slowly from the shadow of a global pandemic, it’s time to raise greater awareness about the project management profession. The skills and knowledge that can be brought to bear to transform organisations and help them exceed customer expectations have never been more important than now. Africa is one of the youngest, fastest-growing regions globally, holding enormous opportunities for project professionals and changemakers.

There Was A Formula 1 Party At Eko Hotel On Sunday! Here's What You Missed! Fast cars. Formation laps. Flashing lights! For a sport as niche as Formula 1, it is perhaps the most intense, difficult, and most international racing championship in the world. The thrill is second to none, with world-class drivers attempting to overtake each other at opportune moments and at the fastest speed. Formula 1 simply runs on pure adrenaline that served to be an inspiration for Heineken as the brand conceptualised and executed an overly exciting F1 event this past Sunday! The event was crafted, much to the excitement of attendees as they were treated to a highly entertaining experience that will no doubt stay in memory for a long time. Want all the deets? Here are five things we loved about the F1 Viewing Party: Lewis Hamilton’s Return Following an enforced break from the circuit due to COVID-19, Lewis Hamilton returned for the final race of the season, to a lot of fanfare. The seven-time Formula 1 champion staged an exciting race for the viewers, coming third just behind Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes commemorated a dominant season with some celebratory doughnuts for Hamilton and Bottas in the final race, with the team recording its seventh straight double championship this year. The Car Wash Experience Heineken was serious about the F1 theme as they leaned into it fully to deliver a great experience. Situated adjacent to the hallowed Heineken F1 party was a unique car wash spot in which attendees’ cars were treated to a VIP experience. Think of impossibly huge lathers of soap, state-of-the-art hoses washing down every crevice of your car while chugging a can of Heineken. Sounds like the life, right? Well, it was all that and more! Stunts! And A Special Appearance! The event was brought to its climax when it was announced that established F1 driver, Bleep Bleep, was in attendance. He not only interacted with the fans and consumers but also treated them to a performance of the most-daring and awe-inspiring F1 stunts. The Full F1 Treatment What better way to experience the best of F1 than being in an actual fast car while a professional driver performs the craziest stunts! It wasn’t quite the out-of-body experience, but it was surreal for ardent F1 fans nonetheless! An Immersive, Exciting Experience Like all things Heineken, the ambience at the F1 Party was a premium experience, with a fantastic stage design, dazzling lights, and many other unique attractions. Fans and consumers alike not only enjoyed the F1 race but also got an opportunity to let their hair down after a challenging year. The foam fights were supremely enjoyable, with unlimited free food and cocktails offered. And DJ Lambo on hand to get the party moving! And oh, did we mention that it was a cool gathering of bikers and lovers of fast cars? Yes, we know. You must be beating yourself up about missing this event. Not to rub it in, but it was everything we described and more. The good news is you can expect more cluster parties like this, this December, and other exciting F1-themed activities from Heineken come 2021; and like all things Heineken, it’s going to be an exciting, high-octane experience. So stay tuned! weyreypey: |
