The ceremony honored the bravery and sacrifices of Russian heroes during World War II. Held at 09:00 hours local time (GMT+3), the event brought together over 40 delegates, including 32 heads of government. bidex111:[/b]Police recover unexploded ordnance after Giwa Barracks armory explosion in Maiduguri[b] The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) and other explosive fragments in Maiduguri following a recent fire and explosion at the Giwa Barracks military armory. According to a Police Sources said an EOD-CBRN team was swiftly deployed to the area. The item, suspected to have originated from the earlier military armory explosion, was professionally and safely evacuated by the bomb disposal experts without incident. “In addition to the rocket, mortar bombs and projectile fragments were also recovered from surrounding neighborhoods. Following standard operating procedures, a demolition exercise for the recovered explosive devices was conducted at the EOD-CBRN Training School in Wulari at about 4:38 p.m. The controlled detonation was successful and there were no casualties. The area remains calm, and police and military authorities have assured the public that monitoring and clearance operations are ongoing. The Command also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items to the nearest security agency.

bidex111:[/b]EXPLOSION AT GIWA BARRACKS CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE HEAT[b] The Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI Maiduguri, wishes to inform the general public of an incident involving the explosion of ordnance in one of our ammunition storage facilities located in Giwa Barracks. The explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri which led to the explosion of some munitions. The situation has however, been brought under control with the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies. Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to protect the public and prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation. The general public is therefore urged to please discountenance any speculation of an attack within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and remain calm. Court Martial Sentences Soldier to Death by Hanging, Another to 10 Years Imprisonment A General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Headquarters, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, has sentenced a soldier, Private Adamu Mohammed, to death by hanging and another, Private Abubakar Yusuf, to 10 years imprisonment for murder and robbery respectively. The GCM, which was inaugurated on Feb. 18, 2025, by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, tried personnel for various offences that could not be disposed of summarily. Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Buhari, President of the GCM, while delivering judgment, said Mohammed was found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend, Miss Hauwa Ali, an offence punishable under Section 106 (a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 LFN 2004. Buhari said the unanimous decision was reached after a thorough review of the facts, the soldier’s service record, and a plea for leniency by the accused and his counsel. "In the interest of societal decorum and justice for the deceased, the law had to be applied to its fullest," he said. Accordingly, Mohammed, with service number 21NA/80/6365, was sentenced to death by hanging. In a related judgment, the GCM sentenced Private Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment for robbery committed at a mall in Enugu. The court found Yusuf, with service number 23NA/85/12116, guilty of robbery under Section 107(1)(b) of the Armed Forces Act. While noting that the plea for mitigation was considered, Buhari said the inability of the GCM to reach the unanimous decision required for the maximum penalty led the panel to sentence Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment under Section 140(3) of the Act. The president of the GCM noted that the findings and sentences for both soldiers are subject to confirmation by the appropriate confirming authority. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army, through the Acting Deputy Director, 82 Division Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhulu, reassured the public of its commitment to upholding ethical standards and professional conduct. He emphasised that the wrongful actions of a few do not reflect the values of the Army, and that decisive measures are always taken to ensure accountability and maintain discipline within its ranks. |

[/b]“COAS CHARGES OFFICERS TO EXPLORE INGENIOUS, WORKABLE IDEAS FOR TACKLING EMERGING SECURITY THREATS…Initiates 211 Demonstration Battalion Barracks construction in Bauchi”[b] The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has charged officers of the Nigerian Army (NA) to demonstrate purposeful leadership, resilience and unwavering commitment to mission objectives. The COAS gave the charge to participants of the Combat Arms Training (CAT) Week 2025, Co-Hosted by the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps and the Armoured Corps in Bauchi, on Monday 28 April 2025. He said such approaches are veritable ways to attain successes in ongoing operations. The COAS noted that the Training Week with the theme *“Strengthening Combat Arms Cooperation in a Joint Environment: A Pre-requisite for Success in Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations"* is timely considering the complexiand fluid battlespace in which the NA currently operate. General Oluyede added that the success of NA operations is dependent upon the ability of the Combat Arms to harness their strengths in cohesion. The COAS further charged participants to go beyond doctrinal exercises and proffer ways to enhance the operational effectiveness of troops across theatres of operation. He urged the Combat Arms and all other Arms and services of the NA to continue to explore ingenious and workable ideas to mitigating emerging threats while making maximum use of the available resources at their disposal. Lieutenant General Oluyede expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his strategic guidance, continuous support and encouragement to the NA through his timely and valuable interventions. He also appreciated the Governor and people of Bauchi State for their continued support to the Armoured Corps and by extension the Nigerian Army. In his keynote address, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, His Excellency Senator Bala Mohammed ably represented by his Deputy His Excellency, Rt Hon Mohammed Auwal Jatau expressed appreciation to the COAS and the entire NA for their continuous support to the State. He noted that such invaluable sacrifices are key to keeping the nation safe and united. According to the Governor, Bauchi State is one of the most peaceful states in the country, attributing it to the efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in the state. He assured continued collaboration with the Nigerian Army and all security agencies to keep Bauchi State safe. Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commander Armoured Corps, Major General Obinna Ajunwa, disclosed that the CAT Week was a platform to evaluate and appraise ongoing operations so as to proffer workable solutions to existential challenges. The visit focused on deepening strategic partnerships with leading Chinese defence and technology firms. The delegation toured cities such as Beijing, Hefei, Nanjing, and Xi’an, engaging with top officials from organizations like the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO). They received briefings on advanced radar systems, air defence capabilities, and command and control technologies, including demonstrations of the Sky Dragon Weapon System and High Energy Laser Counter-UAV systems. Air Vice Marshal Suleiman Kabir Usman, representing the CAS, expressed confidence in the technical expertise of the Chinese companies and noted that further engagements would ensure the successful execution and sustainability of the project. [/b]DSS Foils Arms Procurement Plot, Recovers Weapons in Delta, Arrests British Army Officer and Associates[b] According to multiple reports , the Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday has foiled an arms procurement plot in Delta State, recovering 50 AK-47 rifles, six pump-action shotguns, and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition. The agency arrested several suspects, including an Itsekiri serving as a Major in the British Army, who allegedly procured the weapons at the behest of an individual named Collins. The suspects were apprehended in a covert operation near Asaba, Delta State, and the British Army officer was intercepted at the Lagos airport as he attempted to flee to the United Kingdom. The DSS suspects the arms were intended to instigate unrest in Warri, possibly in connection with the delineation of wards and polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency.
