The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM, has said that his Command Philosophy, has recorded tremendous improvement in logistics, sustainment, maintenance, and equipment systems which ensures enduring operational capabilities. He made the assertion while declearing open the Field-Test of Prototypes in JAJI Military Cantonment Range, Kaduna State from 5 - 8 October, 2026.

Lieutenant General Shaibu, noted that the exercise marks a significant transition from display of innovative ideas to the practical assessment of selected prototypes within realistic field conditions. He said, "the Nigerian Army (NA) recognises that indigenous research, and technological innovation, are essential to closing capability gaps, strengthening equipment support systems, and reducing dependence on external sources." He noted that the Field-Test of Prototypes aims at determining the functionality, operational effectiveness, and ensuring that other attributes of the prototypes are met and guaranteed for military employment.

The Army Chief, who was represented by Commander, Infantry Corps, Major General GM Mutkut, further said he expects the exercise to transcend routine demonstration of prototypes, and translate into more reliable, and fewer operational deficiencies, improved indigenous capabilities, as well as effective delivery of technological solutions. He urged the assessment team, to ensure that professionalism and objectivity are not compromised in order to guarantee dependable results.

The COAS, profoundly expressed gratitude and appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his strategic guidance and steadfast support to the Nigerian Army.

Speaking earlier during his welcome address, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation (COTI) - Army, Major General POA Okoye, said the exercise remains a significant milestone in the NA's efforts at strengthening Research and Development (R&), Innovation and indigenous capability. He added that the field-test was necessary to address identified operational challenges, and make relevant adjustments for better results.

The COTI (A), further said that the exercise provides end-users the opportunity to interact with the prototypes and provide relevant operational feedback; which he said, would enhance development and redefinement.
He urged researchers and evaluators to remain objective, and provide accurate assessment that would aid in making informed decisions.

Highlights of overview in line with the Field-Test of Prototypes, was articulated by the Deputy COTI, Brig Gen HI Dasuki. He said that militaries around the globe have some degree of self sufficiency in the production of military hardwares. He stated that military and civilian entities in R& could seize the opportunity to enhance their knowledge.

The week long Field-Test of Prototypes featured indigenous military hardware products from Nigerian Defence Academy Cinocri, NA Signals Maintenance Command, NA Engineers, NA Corps of Supply and Transport, NA College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and NA College of Environmental Science and Technology. Other indigenous military hardware products were tested by PRIMETEK Multi-business Solutions, PROFORCE Ltd, Tera Haptic Industries, and Dicon Gray Insignia. Similarly, the Field-Test of Prototypes for indigenous military software products was conducted at the NA Space Command, Giri-Abuja.

Corps Commanders, Commandants of NA institutions, senior military officers serving and retired were in attendance.

I wont go into the absence of air support, because the truth is that we dont have the resources to cover the entire operational areas with our lean air resources at the moment (and given our situation it might not be a reasonable expectation in the foreseeable future).

[/b]For one thing, the total absence of heavy weaponry is apparent here, because with just a small detachment of motars and an adequate supply of bombs, the drone guys could have directed accurate fire against the mass of terrorists bunched up in the foreground of the footage[b] marksmen equipped equipped with night vision sights could have taken out all the boko haram assault teams before they got to friendly troop trench lines....in summary, lots of room for improvement.

…..As JAS Qaid, Fighter Surrender with weapons[b]

Troops of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have recorded further operational successes in Borno State, foiling terrorist attacks on Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) at Gajiram in Nganzai Local Government Area and Mairari in Guzamala Local Government Area, while sustained military pressure resulted in the surrender of 2 Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) terrorists, including a Qaid (commander), with weapons.

On 17 September 2026, terrorists advancing towards FOB Gajiram were detected early by alert troops, supported by Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets. Troops immediately adopted appropriate defensive measures, while the Air Component OPHK provided close air support. Faced with the coordinated response, the terrorists withdrew from the vicinity of the location into adjoining areas.

In a related attack on FOB Mairari later that night, several ISWAP terrorists attacked the location but were met with stiff resistance from troops, with robust close air support from the Air Component, who successfully contained the attack, inflicting casualties on the terrorists, and maintained the integrity of the FOB. Subsequent exploitation led to the recovery of 4 terrorists’ corpses, some AK-47 rifles, magazines, quantities of ammunition, RPG bombs and a camcorder, among other items. Troops who sustained injuries during the engagement were promptly stabilised and airlifted to hospital where they are receiving appropriate medical attention.

Subsequently, the Commander Sector 3 OPHK conducted a post-engagement assessment of the affected locations to evaluate the situation, commend the troops and coordinate follow-on actions. The locations were subsequently reinforced to consolidate the gains and strengthen the defensive posture, while troops continue exploitation of the general areas to prevent terrorist elements from regrouping.

Relatedly, sustained military pressure across the Joint Operations Area yielded further results as 2 JAS terrorists, including a Qaid, surrendered to troops of Sector 1 OPHK along the Main Supply Route (MSR) Miyanti–Darel Jamel axis in Bama LGA on the night of 16 September 2026. The terrorists surrendered with 3 AK-47 rifles, 5 magazines, a motorcycle and a cache of ammunition. They are currently in military custody undergoing preliminary investigation and profiling in accordance with established procedures.

The successful defence of the locations, recovery of weapons and continued surrender of terrorist elements underscore the sustained operational pressure being exerted across the theatre. The developments also demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated ground and air operations in denying terrorist elements freedom of action and maintaining operational momentum across the Joint Operations Area.

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, commended the troops, MNJTF ISR team and aircrew for their vigilance, courage and effective coordination. He reaffirmed the determination of OPHK to sustain operational pressure against terrorist elements and protect communities across the North East. He further urged terrorists still in the bush to lay down their arms and surrender through established channels, while calling on members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security forces.

The successful defence of the location further demonstrates the vigilance, combat readiness and operational effectiveness of troops who continue to deny terrorist elements freedom of action across the North East Theatre.

The failed attack occurred at about 2220 hours (10:20 p.m.) on 11 July 2026, when the terrorists attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to breach the troops' location. Alert troops swiftly detected the hostile movement and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, compelling the terrorists to abandon their mission of looting cholera medical supplies and withdraw in confusion after suffering severe losses. The attempted looting further lends credence to recent intelligence reports of a cholera outbreak within terrorist enclaves, as well as reports of the execution of some affected members by the group.

[/b]The neutralisation of a terrorist cameraman during the failed assault led to the recovery of a Sony camcorder containing highly sensitive recordings of terrorist activities, including operational footage and propaganda materials. Preliminary forensic analysis of the last available video recorded prior to the attack indicates that the operation was coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders (Qai'ds), alongside three foreign terrorist facilitators. They include a Palestinian Arab identified as Abu Ishaq, assessed to be ISWAP's overall trainer; a Moroccan Arab identified as Abu Thaiba, a medical doctor serving within the terrorist network; and another Arab operative whose identity is yet to be established. The presence and active involvement of these foreign nationals further reinforces intelligence assessments that ISWAP continues to benefit from external support, specialist expertise and transnational terrorist linkages[b]

During the visit, the delegation inspected ongoing maintenance activities and held strategic discussions with OGMA management on optimising timelines and sustaining progress towards the aircraft's return to service. Recognising the strategic importance of the platform to national and regional airlift operations, both parties reviewed measures aimed at ensuring the successful completion of the maintenance programme.
