NAF CONDUCTS 2017 PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has conducted the 2017 annual physical fitness test for its personnel in a bid to assess their fitness levels in undertaking various assigned military duties. The exercise took place in all NAF units across the country from 21-25 August 2017, in line with the directives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. In addition to improving the overall physical fitness of personnel, the exercise was also designed to enhance their mental alertness for improved service delivery. To meet these goals, personnel were examined in various physical activities including 2.5km jog/5km walk, cardiovascular endurance as well as tests of flexibility (seat and reach) and muscular strength.

Although an annual exercise, the fitness assessment is mandatory for all NAF personnel especially in the wake of their participation in various internal security operations nationwide.

Nigeria Considering Purchase of Military Aircraft, Equipment From Russia

The Minister of Defence, brig-Gen Mansur Dan-Ali (rtd), has said Nigeria is considering the purchase of Russian military equipment.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dan-Ali thursday said the country is interested in MiG fighters, Yak-130 aircraft, artillery equipment and armoured vehicles.
"The Russian equipment that could be of our interest are MiG fighters and some artillery equipment," he said.
"We are here [at International Army Games-2017] to have a look. We have identified some items, like the Kalashnikov modern, new rifles and also avionics, helicopters and some other mine-resistant protected vehicles.
"We also looked at the (Yak-)130 jet and also we are thinking how to go about it. We just had a look and now when we go back home we look at some of its specifications before we sit down for negotiations.
"Basically, we have gone for Mi-35 helicopters last year. We have taken two already and are expecting to get another two early next year. All in all, we have about 12 of them."
He also said Nigeria is planning to take part in the 2018 international army games.
"We shall participate in the International Army Games. As I have said earlier, this agreement that we have just signed entails closer cooperation between the two states," he said.
"We are looking at exchange programs, training and exercises. Since 2006, we have been pushing for it in order to facilitate training of personnel and exchanges of ideas between our two militaries.
"We discussed counterterrorism cooperation with Shoigu and I highlighted the role Russia has been playing across the globe".
"We know that insurgency is a global problem, and Russia has been assisting Afghanistan, Syria and Turkey in this regard.
"We are also looking for assistance from Russia in our sub-region since we have similar problem of insurgency.
"Russia is playing a very important role in the Middle East, especially, in fighting ISIL.
"All around the globe Russia has been doing very well fighting terrorism."
Dan-Ali also said Nigeria has achieved significant progress in fighting against terrorism within its borders, with insurgents being now unable to engage in an organised warfare.
"If you remember, when this administration came two years ago, they were able to regain lost territories, which were occupied by insurgents.
"We were able to degrade them to some extent ... We have been done so far good, and as I am talking to you now, we have been able to subdue insurgents to the extent that they cannot longer fight organized warfare and resorted to bombings and ambushes," the defence minister said.
Dan-Ali added that Abuja was looking to such countries as Chad and Cameroon to "come together in one joint force, which will cooperate in fighting insurgency within that sub-region."
Boko Haram had staged a number of bloody terror attacks, including the 2011 bombing of a UN office in the country's capital of Abuja that killed 21 people.
In April 2014, Boko Haram abducted 276 female students from a government secondary school in the eastern Nigerian town of Chibok.
Along with Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad are also currently engaged in military operations to fight Boko Haram.
The terror group also bombed a UN office in the country's capital Abuja in 2011, killing 21 people.
Additionally, the militants have kidnapped thousands of people throughout the years of the insurgency to fund their efforts aimed at introducing a Sharia law in the region.
Earlier on Tuesday, Dan-Ali had met with the Russian Minister of Defence, Sergei Shoigu, on the sidelines of the 2017 international army games and invited Nigeria to participate in the game next year.
The two countries then signed an inter-governmental agreement on military cooperation.
In late May, Russian Foreign Minister Shoigu had met with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama and said that Russia would further actively support the Nigerian struggle against the Boko Haram insurgency.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE COMMISSIONS 106 DIRECT SHORT SERVICE OFFICERS

The Passing Out Parade for 106 officer cadets of the Direct Short Service Commission (DSCC) Course 26 held yesterday at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base Kaduna after 24 weeks of rigorous and intensive military training at the NAF’s Military Training Centre (MTC). The successful completion of the training of the DSSC 26 cadets is another step in the right direction by the current NAF leadership to sustain its human capacity building initiatives while also increasing the NAF’s manpower situation to meet the nation’s security challenges. Speaking during the colourful passing out parade, the Reviewing Officer, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Olonisakin congratulated the newly commissioned officers and charged them to let integrity, service and excellence guide their thoughts and actions as they begin their careers in the NAF.

The CDS stated that while a lot had been achieved in degrading the capacity and capability of insurgents and terrorists, much more needed to be done to achieve the level of peace and security desired for the Nigerian people. He therefore charged the passing out cadets to be ready to exhibit courage, compassion and wisdom in leading the personnel that would be placed in their charge while tackling the nation’s numerous security challenges. According to the CDS, their commissioning as officers in the NAF was a mark of the confidence reposed in them by the Nigerian people and as such, they must at all times subordinate themselves to constituted civil authority and protect democracy. “You should be apolitical, vigilant and refrain from acts or utterances capable of putting the armed forces in disrepute”, he said. “Military service is by no means an avenue meant solely for the purpose of earning a living wage and putting food on the table. There will be times of hardship, separation from loved ones and demand to give a lot from a little. Therefore, your dedication and patriotism will be vital moral compasses to guide you in navigating through such difficult and complex times,” the CDS reiterated.

Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of awards to deserving passing out cadets after the colourful parade. Among the award-winning cadets was Cadet IL Amaso, a female who won the President and Commander-in-Chief’s Award for coming first in order of merit. The other award winners were Cadet BU Okafor, who won the Minister of Defence Award for emerging second in order of merit among the passing out cadets and Cadet A Hamman, who won the Chief of Defence Staff Award for coming third. Furthermore, Cadet FA Ogar won the Chief of the Air Staff’s Award for demonstrating exceptional skills in practical field exercises such as range classifications, sports and obstacle crossing. All the awardees were adjudged to have outstanding personal qualities.

After the parade, the passing out cadets were conferred with the Presidential Commission into the NAF and immediately decorated with their new ranks of Flying Officer by their relatives, friends and well-wishers, as the case might be. The CDS thereafter presented parchments of commission to the newly commissioned officers following which he administered the oath of allegiance on them. It would be recalled that only recently, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, graduated 1,928 recruits as part of the efforts to increase manpower availability in the NAF.
