CAS STRATEGISES WITH FIELD COMMANDERS, COMMISSIONS UPGRADED FACILITIES AT PRIMARY FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL As a follow-up to the successes recorded in the fight against insurgency in the country, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar held the 2017 Second Quarter meeting with Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding (AOCs), Commandants and Commanders of various Nigerian Air Force (NAF) formations on 24 May 2017 in Kaduna. The purpose of the meeting was to appraise the overall performance of the NAF so far, identify gaps, review strategies and make projections for the next quarter. Accordingly, the meeting focused on operational activities, especially as it pertains to Internal Security, aircraft serviceability status, condition of facilities and other logistics issues, welfare of personnel, discipline, maintenance of standards, and judicious management of resources even as the AOCs gave accounts of stewardship in their various commands. In his remarks at the meeting, the CAS emphasized the importance of regular meetings with field commanders in order to obtain feedback that would help to set new targets. While commenting on NAF participation in Internal Security operations, he said that the NAF had played a substantial role in tackling the challenges and would continue to do its best to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria. He disclosed that the three newly established NAF units in Kerang, Gusau, and Owerri had settled down and started contributing to security in the respective states. The meeting was quite fruitful as significant decisions were reached, based on feedbacks obtained from the field commanders. In another development, the NAF has upgraded the Air Traffic Control facilities at the control tower of the 401 Flying Training School (FTS) Kaduna. The newly provided facilities include a modern communication console with advanced meteorological equipment, all of which are aimed at enhancing primary flying activities and other air operations. The building of the control tower was also remodelled for effective and efficient air traffic services. Before the upgrade, the control tower relied on the Kaduna Civil Airport for the supply of daily metrological information and the training of Air Traffic Controllers. However, the newly upgraded control tower will be able to generate weather information and other airfield parameters for NAF flying activities and will equally serve as a training facility for air traffic controllers. While commissioning the upgraded facilities on 24 May 2017, Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed that the NAF places much emphasis on primary flying training, noting that the new equipment would help to enhance the quality of training at 401 FTS, which is the starting point of flying training in the NAF. Speaking further, the CAS reaffirmed the commitment of the current NAF leadership to adding value to the equipment, infrastructure as well as the human being towards building the NAF capacity. “We believe that what we have here is going to add value to what we are doing in terms of training and air traffic control,” he added.

TROOPS BURST EVOLVING BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS CELL IN MOKWA NIGER STATE Following confirmed information, troops of 31 Artillery Brigade Nigerian Army, on Thursday 25th May 2017, raided an evolving Boko Haram terrorists cell at Mokwa and its environs in Niger State. The raid and subsequent bursting of the cell followed a painstaking surveillance that led to the arrest of the 3 leaders of the cell, Mustapha Muhammed (Adam Bitri), Ali Saleh and Uba Mohammed at their hideout at Gidan Mai village, along Mokwa-Tegina road. Preliminary investigation has confirmed that one of the terrorists, Mustapha Muhammed (Adam Bitri), was among the group of the Boko Haram terrorists that kidnapped the late elder statesman, Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno, in Maiduguri on 13th May 2013 along with one Bakura (at large). Items recovered from them include Automated Teller Machines debit cards, Voters Registration cards, National Identity Cards, various mobile telephone handsets and Bank tellers, among other items. The terrorists are currently being further interrogated. Thank you for your kind cooperation. Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman Director Army Public Relations

NNAMDIII:NAF ACQUIRES SECURITY DOGS, TRAINS PERSONNEL OVERSEAS ON ADVANCED HANDLING TECHNIQUES The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recently trained 12 personnel of its Air Provost Specialty in advanced dog handling techniques to enhance their proficiency in carrying out criminal investigations and other security-related duties. The 6-week advanced dog handlers' course was conducted at Braveheart Bio-Dog Academy in South Africa as a follow-up to the basic K9 training received at the Nigeria Police Force Dog Breeding/Training Centre Abuja. It is the first time in a while that NAF personnel would receive special training in dog handling at a reputable overseas institution. Considering the security challenges currently being faced in the country, the newly acquired dogs, which have been trained to detect explosives, arms and ammunitions, narcotics as well as other substances, are expected to serve as a complement to explosive detection devices. The attendance of the advanced dog handlers’ course has further boosted the capacity of the affected NAF personnel and also exposed them to international best practices in the use of dogs for security purposes. It is recalled that human capacity development through robust and result oriented training for enhanced professional performance is one of the key drivers of the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. The NAF Air Provost Marshal, Air Commodore Christopher Dola, represented the CAS at the graduation ceremony of the newly trained NAF personnel in Pretoria, South Africa on 20 May 2017 and has since returned to Nigeria. |
