NAF TO PROVIDE AIR SUPPORT, REAL TIME IMAGERY, GEOSPATIAL INTELLIGENCE TO POLICE, OTHER SECURITY AGENCIES TO CURB KIDNAPPING, ARMED BANDITRY As part of inter-agency cooperation to address security challenges in the country, especially the issue of kidnapping and armed banditry along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway and Kaduna-Birnin Gwari axis, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reiterated its commitment to support the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies with real time geospatial and imagery intelligence whilst making available its air assets for the conduct of tactical air support missions and increasing the frequency of air reconnaissance in the affected areas. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar, disclosed this today, 3 April 2019, while playing host to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, and the Director General DSS (DG DSS), Yusuf Bichi, at Headquarters NAF, Abuja. The IGP and DG DSS on arrival at HQ NAF immediately went into a closed door meeting with the CAS before undertaking a guided tour of facilities at the newly established, state-of- the-art Geospatial Intelligence Data Centre (GIDC) and Strategic Air Operations Centre (SAOC). The GIDC, which is equipped with high-tech computer hardware and software, was established to enhance the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and exploitation of imagery and geospatial information to provide actionable intelligence for the Armed Forces and other security agencies, while the equally well-equipped SAOC is expected to greatly enhance the coordination of air operations in support of internal security operations across the Country. While inspecting the facilities, the Acting IGP expressed delight and satisfaction with the cutting edge technologies and sophisticated computer software at the Centres. He said the essence of the visit to the CAS was to explore possibilities of using NAF air assets and the products of the GIDC to improve the effectiveness of operations to deal with issue of kidnapping and armed banditry, especially along the Kaduna-Abuja Highway and other parts of the country including Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger and Kogi States. According to him, as a result of the onslaught by security agencies against the armed bandits in Zamfara State, the criminals had moved towards the Abuja axis to carry out their nefarious activities. “I felt that as a security agency, we need to synergize with other security outfits. We don’t have the air capability but the NAF has them. With this we can have a joint operation to deal with this security issue”, he said. The IGP appreciated the CAS for making NAF air assets available for the operation and also availing the NPF and DSS of the capabilities of the GIDC and SAOC. He also congratulated him for emplacing such facilities and making them available to other security agencies to enhance internal security operations for the benefit of the Nigerian people. SLBMS:Seriously, I can't believe you out of all people will say the jf17 as unproven weapons system, would you call the JAS-39 GRIPEN an unprove weapon system because it as little or no combat history ![]() In 2012, 8 JAS 39 were used in Reconn and Combat Air Patrol sorties for missions over Libya as part of Sweden's contribution to a U.N. no fly zone over the country. It never encountered opposition in the sky till date. But it's still a deadly multirole fighter jet in its class. The JF17 is a new multi role fighter jets which as prospects because it's cheap, easy to maintain and yet deadly amongst its class. No wonder the Egyptian airforce might be going for it sooner. |

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE, OUR MAIN PARTNER IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA - CZECH AMBASSADOR The Czech Republic has expressed its interest to strengthen bi-lateral cooperation with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the areas of training, aircraft acquisition and equipment maintenance. This was made known during the visit of the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr Marek Skolil, to Headquarters Nigerian Air Force today, 2 April 2019, where he remarked that Nigeria and the NAF were the main partners of the Czech Republic in Sub-Saharan Africa. Speaking further during the visit, Ambassador Marek traced the cordial bi-lateral ties between both countries to the 1960s when the Czech Republic supplied the L-29 Delfin aircraft to Nigeria, which, among other newly-acquired aircraft, were employed by the NAF to provide necessary air support for the effective prosecution of the Nigerian Civil War. He noted that, over the years, the Czech Republic had continued to provide training and technical support first for L-29 aircraft and later for its successor, the L-39ZA aircraft, whenever called upon. Ambassador Skolil expressed satisfaction with the fact that the Czech technicians who were working in Kano were adding value to the overhaul activities on the NAF's L-39ZA aircraft. He emphasized that these were all being carried out based on his country’s commitment to providing great value for money whilst ensuring strict quality control mechanisms. The Ambassador reiterated the determination of the Czech Government to continue providing the needed technical support for the reactivation and overhaul of the NAF L-39ZA fleet. He further added that the next phase of the collaboration would entail the upgrade/switch to the new L-39NG aircraft, which he said his Government was poised to embark upon in order to considerably enhance the NAF’s efforts to tackle current and emerging security challenges in the country. “The L-39NG is indeed an aircraft for the Next Generation but we also see it as a good omen of our cooperation with Nigeria”, he said. Responding, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, expressed his delight in receiving the Ambassador in his Office while appreciating the Czech Government’s support and cooperation to Nigeria and the NAF right from the time of the Nigerian Civil War. He said he was happy to report that the Czech technicians, who were working in Kano with NAF engineers and technicians on the reactivation/overhaul of 3 L-39ZA aircraft, were doing an excellent job, despite the current high temperatures. He highlighted that upon completion of the life extension of these 3 aircraft, the Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) on the aircraft, which is provided for in NAF’s 2019 Budget, would commence as soon as the budget is passed and funds released. He noted that this would pave way for the eventual transition to the L-39NG by acquiring the necessary engines and avionics. The CAS further identified other areas of partnership to include basic and tactical pilot training as well as communications information systems. Accordingly, he revealed that he would be sending a team of NAF officers to visit the Czech Republic to work out modalities for the various training programmes as well as identify other areas of collaboration in aircraft and communications systems maintenance. Air Marshal Abubakar added that he was glad that both nations were committed to moving the existing cordial, mutually beneficial relations to even greater heights. Nigerian Army uncovered an illegal Arms manufacturing factory in Benue State.... Personnel of military spike operation in Benue State, code named Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS , have uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing factory in Logo Local Government Area of the state, arrested two suspects and recovered different calibre of fire arms. Among the suspects was a telecommunications engineer, who claimed he trained in arms manufacturing in Mauritania five years ago. Also recovered from the gang were arms manufacturing tools and firearms at various stages of fabrication. Parading the suspects, yesterday, at OPWS Base in Makurdi, Commander of the operation, Major-General Adeyemi Yekini, said his troops tracked the gang after a tip-off and four weeks of surveillance. According to Yekini, “about five weeks ago, the headquarters of OPWS got information from our local sources about activities of some weapon manufacturers operating between Ayiin in Logo and Ukum local government areas of the state. ‘After due diligence by the intelligence unit, within four weeks of surveillance, we were able to track the culprits to their location and had them arrested. We are still on the trail of members of the gang who are currently at large, but no matter how they run we will get them.” Corroborating Yekini, Sector 2 Commander of OPWS in charge of Logo and Ukum local government areas, who led troops to arrest the gang members, Captain Samuel Okenarhe, said but for the quick intervention of the troops, one of the suspects could have been lynched by an angry mob in the community. According to him, “we rescued him and he later took us to Tinenune village in Ukum Local Government Area where the two factories were located. His other accomplice initially ran away but he was later apprehended.” AK-47 goes for N350,000, pistol for N50,000 Confessing to the alleged crime, Cephas Ati, who was arrested alongside Mnsuga Terhila, claimed he was arrested with two AK-47 rifles, explaining that he started the business two years ago when he came back to Nigeria from Mauritania after he mysteriously lost all he had to witchcraft. Ati said: “l have been in the business for about two years now. I lived in Europe and started this arms business when I returned from Europe two years ago but I lost everything to witchcraft and I had to start all over again. “I had my training in Mauritania. Each of the AK-47 goes for N350,000 while pistols go for N50,000 depending on the quality. In the two years I have supplied a total of 16 AK-47 rifles to different clients.” The suspect claimed he did not own any of the workshops “but I know a manufacturer, his name is Tavershima Vande.” Reacting, Chairman of Benue ethnic leaders, on the auspices of Mdzough U Tiv, Omi Ny’ Igede and Ochetoha K’ Idoma, Chief Edward Ujege, said they outrightly condemned any act of arms trading and manufacturing in the state. “All we are seeking is peace in Benue State and we may not enjoy that peace if people are dealing in arms in our state. Therefore, we condemn any of such acts in our state,” Ujege said. Also reacting on behalf of the state government, Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the governor, Mr. Terver Akase, urged that justice takes its course in the matter. Akase said; “Governor Ortom through his amnesty programme had insisted that Benue State should be rid of arms of any kind. Therefore, people who are not authorised by law to carry arms have no reasons whatsoever to own arms at all. “So the government has been pushing this narrative and if anyone is caught with arms, the law should take its course because this government abhors gun-running by any individual as far as that person has no backing of the law. “So whoever is involved, the law should take its course and we urge security agencies to do proper investigation in the matter and let justice be served.”

NAF DESTROYS TERRORISTS’ HIDEOUT, NEUTRALIZES HIGH VALUE TARGETS AT MAGARI IN NORTHERN BORNO STATE The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has significantly degraded an Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) Terrorists’ Hideout and neutralized some of its leaders and fighters at Magari on the fringes of Lake Chad in the Northern part of Borno State. This was accomplished in an air interdiction mission conducted yesterday, 1 April 2019, following credible intelligence reports indicating that some senior ISWAP leaders arrived the settlement on Friday, 30 April 2019, along with some of their fighters. Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions conducted over the weekend confirmed increased level of human activities in the settlement with a prominent ISWAP flag observed near 2 compounds in the settlement indicating the presence of high level leaders of the Sect. Accordingly, 2 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft, supported by an ISR platform, were dispatched to attack the identified compounds within the settlement. Overhead the target area, some terrorists were observed in the vicinity of the compounds. The bombs from the 2 Alpha Jets recorded direct hits on the target compounds resulting in destruction of several structures, which were seen engulfed in flames. Several of the terrorists were also neutralized in the process. The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations against the terrorists in the Northeast. INTERNAL SECURITY: NASARAWA STATE GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES 100 HECTARES OF LAND TO NIGERIAN AIR FORCE In a bid to further boost security in Nasarawa, the State Government has allocated about 100 Hectares of land to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for the establishment of a Base in Lafia. This was made known today, 1 April 2019, when the Nasarawa State Governor, His Excellency Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, and other top government functionaries from the State, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in his Office at Headquarters Nigerian Air Force (HQ NAF). Speaking during the visit, Governor Al-Malkura stated that he was at HQ NAF as a follow up to the various visits made by the CAS to Nasarawa State at the time the State was beset with security challenges. He recalled how the visit by the CAS, as well as visits by heads of other security agencies, had ensured the restoration of peace and stability to Nasarawa and neighbouring States. He remarked that the NAF and the State had agreed on the need to establish bases in Nasarawa, with 3 different locations identified at the time. The Governor however advocated that, in the immediate term, a NAF Base could be established close to the new Lafia Cargo Airport, which was under construction and at about 80 per cent completion. He reasoned that siting the NAF unit close to the new Airport would enhance security and complement civil flight operations when they commence. While commending the NAF for its efforts in checkmating security challenges in the State and other restive areas in the Country, the Governor stressed that Nassarawa State would continue to provide necessary support to ensure the effective take-off of the NAF Unit for enhanced security in the area. Responding, the CAS expressed appreciation to the Government and People of Nasarawa State for their continued support and collaboration. He informed the Governor that the NAF has continued to build capacity for more effective and efficient operations that would enhance the national security architecture by bringing security closer to the people. In this regard, he said, the Service had established Quick Response Wings (QRWs) at Agatu in Benue State and Gembu in Taraba State as well as a Combat Search and Rescue Group at Kerang in Plateau State and Quick Response Groups (QRGs) at Owerri in Imo State, Ipetu-Ijesha in Osun State and Gusau in Zamfara State. The CAS reported that the NAF had also recently established a NAF Detachment, with a helipad and other support facilities, at Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State to further boost anti-armed banditry operations in Kaduna State and environs. He emphasized that these units, working in conjunction with other security agencies, were adding value to the security of the States where they are located. “The NAF is no longer about Air Power projection alone. We have also developed capacity for force protection, which has also enhanced our internal security operations capability in order to better protect Nigeria and Nigerians” he said. Air Marshal Abubakar expressed delight about the new Lafia Cargo Airport, stating that it would not only serve as an alternate airfield for NAF aircraft but also enhance the operations of the QRW which would soon be activated in the State. While thanking the Governor for the allocation of the land, the CAS stated he would send a Team to Nasarawa to determine the requirements for its development. He said the Team would also assess the level of progress of work at the Cargo Airport. He commended Governor Al-Makura for his efforts at ensuring security in Nasarawa State, noting that its proximity to Abuja meant that any insecurity would undoubtedly have an impact on the Federal Capital. PRESS BRIEFING BY CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF LT GEN TY BURATAI (N/7630) NAM OMM (BR) psc (+) ndc (BD) FCMH FNHAM BA (Hons) MA mphil TO KICKSTART EXERCISE HARBIN KUNAMA III HELD AT HEADQUARTERS 1 BRIGADE COMPLEX GUSAU ON 1 APRIL 2019 PROTOCOL 1. I am delighted to be in your midst today for the Press Briefing preparatory to Exercise HARBIN KUNAMA III. The exercise was planned to hold from 2 – 27 Jun 19 in the Nigerian Army Forecast of Events but current threat assessment necessitated the re-scheduling of the exercise and the expansion of its mandate to cover forest areas that have served as SAFE HAVENS for bandits. As you may be aware, the menace of banditry activities has continued to persist in some parts of the North West region and along the border areas. The unwholesome and dastardly acts of these bandits have adversely affected the socio-economic activities in these areas with attendant effect on human and economic security. It has also led to deaths and maiming of innocent people with the attendant wanton destruction of properties. 2. It is on this premise that Ex HARBIN KUNAMA III is planned to mitigate the current threats to security in Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States. Specifically, the exercise is designed to decisively eliminate all forms of banditry activities with a view to ensuring lasting peace in the affected areas. In this regard, the exercise would complement the existing Op SHARAN DAJI security architecture emplaced in the affected states. I wish to assure the good people of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States that the NA will carry out its constitutional mandate professionally and within the ambit of the law while adhering to the ROE. Additionally, the Nigerian Army will continue to support the non-kinetic efforts of the civil authority to combat criminality and banditry as well as prevent it from gaining traction and spreading to other relatively peaceful regions of the country. 3. I must also commend officers and men of the NA for their display of courage and gallantry in dealing with the myriad of security challenges confronting the nation especially the insurgency in the North East, banditry in the North West and other forms of criminality in other parts of the country in a most professional manner. I want to re-assure you that the Nigerian Army leadership will continue to provide troops with all the equipment and necessary support to combat all of these menaces within available resources. I also want to acknowledge and appreciate the support of the Nigeria Police and other security agencies for your excellent collaboration and cooperation with our troops. We are all encouraged to ensure this synergy towards leveraging our collective security efforts continue unabated. 4. I will like to appreciate the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari as well as the Executive Governors of Katsina and Sokoto States, for their continued support to the NA. I want to once again thank the Government and good people of Zamfara state for being wonderful hosts in providing and supporting us with infrastructural development at the Nigerian Army Barracks in Gusau. This magnanimous gesture has ensured the seamless relocation of 1 Brigade and its affiliate units from Sokoto to Gusau. I also want to use this opportunity to appeal to the good people of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara states to cooperate with the NA and other security agencies by providing useful and credible information on activities of criminal elements in order to ensure focused application of our kinetic efforts to achieve our campaign objectives. Indeed, I urge you to claim ownership of this endeavor because we can never succeed in ridding your states of bandits and criminal elements without your active support. I will not end this address without expressing our immense gratitude to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces, Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support to the NA. Indeed, Mr President’s continued support has significantly enhanced the combat effectiveness and morale of troops. 5. It is on this note that I am pleased to thank members of the press and all those who have taken time to grace this event. Be rest assured of the commitment of the Nigerian Army to sustain the existing liaison and synergy that have ensured seamless media operations over time. 6. Thank you and God Bless.
