OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS: AIR OPERATIONS RECEIVE BOOST AS NAF GRADUATES ADDITIONAL PILOTS

The efforts of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at ensuring enhanced operational effectiveness in the prosecution of the ongoing war against insurgency in the Northeast as well as combating other forms of criminality in other parts of the country has received another boost today, 28 August 2018, with the graduation of 7 pilots of Basic Flying Course 18 at the 403 Flying Training School (403 FTS) Kano. Today’s graduation also witnessed the decoration of a graduate of United States Air Force (USAF) Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT) with NAF pilot wings; hence, in all, 8 pilots were decorated with wings having demonstrated the professional competence in handling fixed winged aircraft. This has brought the total number of pilots that have been winged within the past 3 years to an unprecedented 90.

In his keynote address, the Guest of Honour at the occasion, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, stated that the graduation ceremony and overwhelming resurgence of young pilots in the NAF were testimonies that his vision to reposition the NAF into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of air power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives has indeed become a reality. He noted that following extensive trainings, platform acquisitions and reactivation of grounded aircraft as well as resuscitation of unserviceable equipment, the NAF could now mostly fulfill its roles across the spectrum of air power tasks. The CAS added that the rebuilding process would continue as the Service continued to strive to consolidate by enhancing its manpower capacity and improving upon the serviceability status of aircraft in NAF inventory.

Air Marshal Abubakar noted, in particular, that a lot had been achieved in the critical area of human capacity development. According to him, “We recently graduated 11 pilots from Westline Aviation of South Africa, 10 pilots from International Aviation College Ilorin while 43 student pilots have completed their ab-initio flying training at 401 FTS Kaduna. Meanwhile, 27 student pilots are currently undergoing ab-initio flying training at 401 FTS while 6 have just departed for helicopter training in South Africa. Furthermore, 700 Special Forces personnel have been trained for the defence of NAF mission critical assets, while many personnel are undergoing engineering and other specialized Air Force related trainings both at home and abroad”, he added. He noted however that the strategic importance of NAF indigenous training institutions towards the attainment of his vision could not be overemphasized. He highlighted, for instance, that the local training of the 7 pilots had saved Nigeria close to 6 Million US Dollars that would have been spent if they had been trained abroad. He therefore commended the Commander 403 FTS and his team of instructors for their commitment and dedication in ensuring completion of the training. He urged them to sustain the momentum for subsequent courses. Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar congratulated the graduands for realizing their dreams through hard work and dedication but reminded them of the need to prepare themselves to justify the efforts and resources expended on their training.

Earlier, the Commander 403 FTS, Group Captain Nnamdi Ananaba, who welcomed dignitaries on behalf of the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Air Training Command (ATC), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Mohammed Idris, lauded the CAS for his leadership acumen and doggedness that saw to the in-house maintenance of 2 x L-39ZA trainer aircraft which aided the successful completion of the training. He assured the CAS of the readiness of the School to continue to keep up with its mandate which is the conduct of basic flying training on jet aircraft leading up to the award of pilot wings. The Commander added that 403 FTS, since inception, had successfully trained 175 pilots, including some from Sister African countries such as Ghana and Zimbabwe. He stated that the 7 graduating pilots had undergone intensive flying training in general aircraft handling, instrument flying, navigation, formation flying and night flying notching up an average of 149 sorties each to complete the Course.

The graduation ceremony was preceded by an aerial display involving four L-39ZA flown by the graduating pilots as well as a static display showcasing Research and Development projects executed by 403 FTS, which included a rocket launcher tester for the L-39ZA aircraft, a locally designed and constructed 3-in-1 aircraft components test bench as well as a Flight Training Management System (FTMS) software. Other highlights of the event included the award of certificates and decoration of the new pilots with wings as well as the presentation of awards to graduating pilots that distinguished themselves on the course. In this regard, Flying Officer Muyideen Salami emerged Best in Academics while Flying Officer Edward Wukari was given the award for the Best in Flying. Flying Officer Clement Obiahu emerged as the Best Overall graduating pilot. Among the dignitaries at the event were the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, who represented the Executive Governor of the State and a representative of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, as well as serving and retired senior military officers.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE NEUTRALIZES SEVERAL ARMED BANDITS AT BAYAN RUWA, RUGU FOREST IN ZAMFARA STATE

In continuation of operations to flush armed bandits out of the Northwestern part of the country, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA has, between 25 and 27 August 2018, successfully neutralized several armed bandits at BAYAN RUWA and RUGU FOREST in the Eastern part of Zamfara State. The attack on BAYAN RUWA was executed following an encounter with a notorious group of armed bandits by own ground forces whilst conducting clearance operations on 25 August 2018. The troops called for close air support and the ATF dispatched a ground attack aircraft as well as an attack helicopter to the location. The aircraft supported the ground forces of Sector 3 to inflict maximum damage on the criminal elements.

On 26 August 2018, an attack helicopter on armed reconnaissance around same location sighted makeshift structures within a forested area suspected to be a new hideout being developed by the bandits that survived the attack of the previous day. The helicopter subsequently engaged the location. Some of the bandits, who were seen attempting to flee the location, were mopped up by subsequent follow-on attacks.

Similarly, armed reconnaissance missions conducted on 26 and 27 August 2018, revealed the presence of some armed bandits at a settlement East of HAYIN ALHAJI as well as some warehouse-like structures deep inside RUGU FOREST that were being used as hideouts by the bandits. Several armed bandits and a considerable number of rustled cattle were seen around one of the makeshift warehouses. Accordingly, the warehouses and the criminals operating there were attacked by the combat helicopters leading to the destruction of the makeshift buildings and neutralization of several armed bandits.

The ATF will continue to dominate the area through armed reconnaissance and air interdiction missions to completely decimate the armed bandits in order to ensure a return to normalcy in Zamfara and other States in the North West. All persons involved in armed banditry in the area are therefore advised to renounce violence, surrender to security agencies and hand over their weapons.

The picture you posted is entirely different . The pakistani vest is totally a mag carrier.

Noticed some of the AFSF still wear there bullet proof vest underneath the mag carrier.

Contrast the 2nd picture; the guy with the red cap is only wearing the mag carrier unlike the other two guys.

PRESS BRIEFING BY THE ACTING DIRECTOR DEFENCE INFORMATION BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN AGIM ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE OPERATION SHARAN DAJI ON 24 AUGUST 2018 AT THE HEADQUARTERS OPERATION SHARAN DAJI GUSAU ZAMFARA STATE

PROTOCOL

1. I welcome you to this maiden briefing on the activities of Operation SHARAN DAJI. The reconstituted Operation SHARAN DAJI was operationalized on 1 July 2018 with the merging of erstwhile Operation WHIRL STROKE II and Operation IDON RAINI. The area of operation covers Zamfara and Birni Gwari in Kaduna States before Birni Gwari became Operation WHIRL PUNCH. The security situation in Zamfara state was characterized by wanton killings, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and armed robberies, which made life difficult for the citizens. Other security threats were imposition of levies on villages by bandits, harassment of farmers from their farmlands and disruption of weekly markets activities across the state. Operation SHARAN DAJI comprises of Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police, Department of State Security and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security elements. The deployment of troops in all the vulnerable areas, hitherto devastated by bandits greatly reduced their criminal activities.

2. The mandate of the Operation SHARAN DAJI is to combat armed banditry, kidnappings and cattle rustling in order to restore peace and security for the citizens to engage in their legitimate activities. With support of the State Government, cooperation of citizens and community leaders by providing useful and credible information on the bandits’ hideouts camps were received andtroops promptly acted. The troops of OPSD were equally assisted by local vigilante groups, who are conversant with the environment and modus operandi of the bandits and other criminal elements.

3. In the pursuit of these mandates, series of raids, ambushes, fighting patrols, snaps road blocks and air strikes are being conducted. This has enabled the troops to dominate their respective areas of responsibilities and create safe and conducive atmosphere for the civilian populace to live their normal lives. So far in this operation, many heinous and notorious armed bandits were neutralized among them were Danboko and Danbuzuwa and over 50 bandits were arrested. Likewise over 20 sophisticated arms and assorted ammunitions, along with some dangerous local weapons were recovered from bandits.

4. Other recoveries include 2 cars, 36 motorcycles, over 30 mobile phones and3 kidnapped victims were rescued with over N500, 000 recovered from kidnappers. Some arms dealers and cattle rustlers including 2 female bandits were also arrested. A point of emphasis is the arrest of chief logistics suppliers identified as Mr Amos Ugwuozor, Nura Mukhtari and Sani Yaro.

5. Robust patrols and armed escorts around vulnerable villages and weekly local markets have built confidence in the community, so that bandits no longer have freedom of action, where they impose levies and harass traders. It is on record that activities of our troops had led to the recovery of over 1000 rustled cows which were returned to the owners. The return of peace and security in Maradun, Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs led to the massive returns of more than 6,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) to their homes where economic and farming activities had commenced in earnest.

6. The Air Task Force (ATF) in support of OPSD recently launched series of air strikes against the bandits’ hideouts and camps in SUBUBU and RUGU forests. The attacks successfully neutralized large number of armed bandits and destroyed their camps. These thick forests and other ungoverned areas serve as sanctuary and safe haven for the bandits, from where they planned and launched attack on innocent people. The troops make use of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform to gain real time information on the movement and locations of bandits thereby denying them freedom of action.

7. I want to state categorically that Zamfara State which was once bedevilled with insecurity and incessant killings due to banditry activities, cattle rustling, kidnappings and armed robbery is now assured of safety of lives and properties. The OPSD assured you that the momentum will be sustained, while increasing the tempo of the fight to degrade criminalities in the State.

8. Gentlemen of the Press, we are aware of the absolute need to provide succour to the victims of the banditry in addition to physical security. In line with this, the OPSD has concluded plans to execute programmes and projects that will have positive impacts on the locals. These projects include town hall meetings, medical outreaches, sinking of boreholes and renovations of schools and clinic will be concluded soon.

9. Let me use this medium to invite every law abiding citizen in the State to join hands with Operation SHARAN DAJI by giving timely and useful information about these criminals. This is the least we can all do to return the State back to the path of socio-political and economic development where investors will feel safe to come and invest.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE DESTROYS MORE ARMED BANDIT CAMPS IN ZAMFARA STATE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA, yesterday, 23 August 2018, successfully executed air strikes that destroyed more armed bandit camps in Daji Bawar and Sunke Villages in Zamfara State. The strikes were planned on the heels of intelligence reports indicating that some bandits who had survived the intensive air assaults on their various hideouts at Shinkafi, Galadi, Ajia, Shamashalle and other areas of Zamfara State had relocated to Anka Local Government Area (LGA) of the State. Accordingly, the ATF embarked on intensive Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions to confirm the exact location of the new camps. Eventually, the criminal elements were observed to have pitched there tents at Daji Bawar and Sunke Villages.

The ATF therefore launched coordinated air strikes on the camps in the two villages with a force package of 2 attack helicopters. Overhead the target area, several bandits armed with automatic weapons were seen at both locations. They were engaged leading to the destruction of the camps and their means of transport while scores of them were killed. Troops of Sector 3 Operation SHARAN DAJI later confirmed that over 30 armed bandits were neutralized while many others suffered injuries.

The ATF will continue to dominate the area through armed reconnaissance and air interdiction missions to completely decimate the armed bandits in order to ensure a return to normalcy in Zamfara and other States in the Northwest. All persons involved in armed banditry in the area are therefore advised to renounce violence, surrender to security agencies and hand over their weapons.

A-29 SUPER TUCANO AIRCRAFT: CHIEF OF THE AIR STAFF HOSTS SIERRA NEVADA CORPORATION EXECUTIVES, URGES PROMPT DELIVERY OF AIRCRAFT

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has appealed to the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), manufacturers of the A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft, to expedite action on the delivery of the aircraft to Nigeria to enhance Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational capability for the swift conclusion of the counterinsurgency operations in the Northeast. The CAS made the request yesterday, 24 August 2018, while receiving a delegation from the Company on a courtesy visit at Headquarters NAF, Abuja.

The visiting delegation, which also included officials from the Office of Security Cooperation (OSC) of the United States (US) Embassy in Nigeria, was led by Senior Vice President of SNC, Mr Taco Gilbert, who assured the CAS of the Company’s determination to deliver quality aircraft capable of providing the needed impetus for NAF air operations. He also expressed the commitment of the Company to provide adequate training for NAF’s air and ground crew to ensure effective and efficient operation of the aircraft. In addition, the SNC Vice President noted that the Company looked forward to continued collaboration with NAF towards building a new air capability to address the security challenges in the country.

While responding, the CAS expressed his delight at the US Government's support for the fight against insurgency with the signing of the contract to sell the Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria. He noted, however, that the major concern of the NAF was the timeframe for delivery. The CAS was confident that the counterinsurgency operations in the Northeast could be executed more effectively, if light attack aircraft like the Super Tucano, with its long range, precision munitions as well as day and night capability, could be made available to the NAF in good time. He therefore urged the Company to expedite production so that at least 2 of the aircraft would be available to Nigeria within an earlier timeframe, to boost counterinsurgency operations. One of the highlights of the visit was the presentation of a model of the Super Tucano aircraft to the CAS.

In that us military video, they said they have a SF base. That is controlled by an SF major. Like in an Indian parasf video that I watched, the officer was striped of his rank before participating in the training

Does this means that the officer after the SF training becomes an operative with his rank as an officer or what... infact what happens to an officer that undergoes an SF training
I think the striping off your rank as an officer is only valid during such SF training. After the training your rank will be restored.
