NIGERIA PROJECTS STRATEGIC VISION AT FUTURE AIR FORCE CONFERENCE IN PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

As part of efforts to strengthen international defence cooperation, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) delegation led by Air Vice Marshal IH Etukudo, Chief of Policy and Plans, participated in the Future Air Force Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, from 17–18 September 2025. The conference drew senior officers and delegates from nations including Uganda, Ghana, Ethiopia, France, and the USA, alongside defence industry leaders and global air power experts. AVM Etukudo delivered a keynote address outlining the NAF’s modernisation drive aimed at building an agile, resilient, and technologically driven force aligned with Nigeria’s security needs. The conference explored critical themes such as pilot training, modernisation of syllabuses, instructor expertise, and airspace requirements, while also emphasising international collaboration across policy, diplomacy, security, R&grin and the aviation industry.

Nigeria’s participation underscored its growing role as a credible partner in shaping global security. Engagements with key stakeholders provided valuable insights into leveraging technology, enhancing training, and refining airpower strategies to meet evolving threats. These outcomes reinforced the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar’s vision of a future-ready force capable of contributing to both national security and wider international stability. As AVM Etukudo aptly noted, “The Nigerian Air Force is committed to building partnerships that drive innovation, enhance capability, and foster collective security in today’s complex global environment.”

NAF, ASELSAN PARTNER TO BOOST RADAR, AIR DEFENCE AND PRECISION CAPABILITIES

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) commitment to strengthening cooperation with Turkish defence giant ASELSAN, particularly in the areas of radar, air defence, and precision technologies. Speaking on 23 September 2025 during the courtesy visit of ASELSAN’s President and CEO, Mr Ahmet Akyol, to NAF Headquarters in Abuja, the CAS noted that the engagement provided an opportunity to consolidate ongoing collaboration and explore new avenues that would directly enhance the NAF’s operational capabilities in addressing contemporary security challenges.

Air Marshal Abubakar commended ASELSAN’s record as a trusted leader in defence electronics and innovation, stressing that the company’s expertise aligns with his Command Philosophy of building an agile and resilient Air Force that can effectively meet Nigeria’s security needs. He explained that the introduction of advanced radar systems, anti-drone technologies, and precision-guided capabilities would not only boost NAF’s mission effectiveness but also contribute to safeguarding communities across Nigeria and the wider sub-region. “This partnership is about equipping our Air Force with the tools needed to protect our people and strengthen national security,” he added.

In his remarks, Mr Akyol expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated ASELSAN’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the NAF by delivering cutting-edge solutions in radar, avionics modernisation, and air defence systems. He emphasised that Nigeria remains a strategic partner for Türkiye in Africa, and ASELSAN is committed to contributing to NAF’s efforts in protecting lives and ensuring stability. The visit is the latest in a series of high-level engagements between both nations, underscoring their shared vision of advancing defence cooperation that directly supports peace and security for the Nigerian people.

THE HEROISM OF NIGERIA POLICE ASP DAN ZURU & OTHERS AT AGU CENTRE IN BENUE STATE

...How A Gallant Police/ "Anyam Nyór" Operation Took On Hundreds Of Armed Terrorists

In difficult times such as we are in now, we must not take for granted the sacrifices that patriots make in the line of duty, lest the motivation that such sacrifices should give to others be lost.

The supreme price that Police ASP Danlamin Usman aka Dan Zuru and others paid at Agu Centre in armed combat operation against Fulani herdsmen and their bandit and militia allies must not be in vain.

The security operation at Agu Centre in Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State last Thursday, 19th September, 2025 against armed terrorists by a detachment of the Nigeria Police and the local security task force code named "Anyam Nyór" is worth taking proper note of.

Insider accounts have revealed how the operation led by ASP Dan Zuru, was executed with the sort of bravery that should earn those who fell in action and those who survived it the garlands they deserve.

Dan Zuru had become popular within security circles in the state for his uncommon bravery and serial successess in combat operations, particularly in the Sankera area where he was passionately committed to the fight against banditry and herdsmen terrorism.

With him on the operation was another combatant police veteran popularly known as John Bushman and the Commander of "Anyam Nyór" in Katsina-Ala, Commander Mike Tuurga, leading dozens of battle tested troops riding on motorcycles and 3 trucks including a heavy calibre Gun-truck.

Acting on credible intelligence the operation targeted to dislodge Fulani herdsmen who had retreated to Agu Centre following heavy loses they had suffered at the hands of the same team and units of the the Nigerian Army Operation WhirlStroke in the Utange - Mbatyula axis of Katsina-Ala LGA.

However, the team was apparently not aware of reinforcements recruited by the herdsmen who were joined at Agu Centre by local bandits in the area and hired mercenary militia from neighbouring Taraba State numbering in hundreds.

It was, therefore, a near overwhelming force that Dan Zuru and his team came up against when they got into the engagement envelope at Agu Centre, with the ensuing firefight said to have been bloody.

The enemy force which was reportedly entrenched and lying in wait unleashed heavy calibre automatic fire including with AK 47s, SMGs and Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers (RPG) against Dan Zuru and his men who took cover and returned fire.

At this point professional combat training and experience is said to have weighed in favour of the gallant security forces, who though heavily outnumbered, were able to hold the terrorists and their allies at bay.

Dan Zuru, Tuurga, Bushman and a crack team around them are said to have kept the engagement envelope saturated with covering fire while he gave the orders for a retreat, and it was in the course of this that Commander Tuurga is said to have been shot in the arm.

The terrorists sensing a breach in the defence shield from the engle of fire earlier covered by the wounded Commander Tuurga had surged forward, but Bushman is said to have dashed forward, ducking under a hail of fire to take control of the Gun-truck which gunner might have gone down under the initial fire.

Bushman engaging the MG on the Gun-truck had reportedly wrecked havock on the enemy, giving Tuurga and others the needed covering fire to retreat into escape, with Dan Zuru still pinning down the main body of terrorists under withering fire.

It was when the chain ammunition feeding the MG on the Gun-truck had ran out and Bushman, without the assistance of a gunhand had no time to quickly enough break open and load a new chain-feed that Dan Zuru given him the order to dismount the MG and escape with it, which he did successfully, with his superior officer giving him covering fire.

Bandit kingpin Ado Aleru kills 7 of his fighters in Zamfara over alleged betrayal

Notorious bandit leader, Ado Aleru, has reportedly killed seven of his own fighters in parts of Zamfara State, following suspicion of betrayal.
Zagazola gathered that the killings took place across villages of Takulawa, Turba, Bamamu and the Yamma forest axis.
According to sources, Aleru accused his fighters of staging unauthorised kidnappings along the Gusau–Yankara highway, a development he considered a threat to his control and operations.

“He personally executed seven of them after confirming they were behind recent abductions of travellers on the highway. He feared their actions were drawing too much attention from security forces,” one of the sources said.
The killings have reportedly triggered fear and discontent among Aleru’s remaining loyalists, who see the executions as a sign of growing mistrust within the camp.

Aleru, formerly designated as a wanted terrorist by the Federal Government, has long been accused of masterminding kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling across Zamfara, Katsina and parts of Sokoto States. The bandit kingpin was also discussing peace card with the Federal committee to end hostilities in the North West.

OPERATION FASAN YAMMA INTERCEPTS TERRORIST LOGISTICS, RESCUE VICTIMS AND NEUTRALIZE TERRORISTS

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) recorded major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism and banditry in recent security operations conducted in parts of Zamfara and Sokoto States. The troops intercepted terrorist logistics comprising ransom money of over twenty-three million naira, recovered over one hundred and sixty rustled livestock, and neutralized terrorists during series of coordinated and successive operations across Shinkafi, Gusau, Bukkuyum and Tureta Local Government Areas (LGA) of Zamfara and Sokoto States respectively from 8 to 10 September 2025.

The operation commenced with coordinated offensives along the Shinkafi – Katuru – Galadi -Tubali axis, where troops of 1 Brigade Forward Operating Base Shinkafi and Mobile Strike Team OPFY cleared terrorists’ hideouts within the forested areas of Galadi and Tubali villages with many of the bandits escaping with gunshot wounds. Similarly, the same troops conducted stop-and-search operations at Katuru Bridge along Shinkafi – Katuru - Isa Road where three suspects were initially intercepted with the sum of Eight Million Seven Hundred Thousand Naira and later the same day, the troops intercepted two more suspects in a black Toyota Corolla with the sum of Fifteen Million Naira. Preliminary investigations revealed that the monies were ransoms for locals abducted along Nigeria borders with Niger Republic by terrorists hibernating within Shinkafi axis. Meanwhile, the exhibits and suspects have been handed over to appropriate agencies for further investigation.

In a parallel effort, troops of OPFY operating in Anka and Tureta LGA of Zamfara and Sokoto states under Sector 2 OPFY ambushed terrorists moving livestock rustled from Talata Mafara and Tureta LGA to their enclaves at Bagega Forest and Furagirke Forest respectively. The criminals fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning 8 kidnapped victims and 21 sheep in the Anka axis while 143 rustled sheep were recovered by the troops operating in the Tureta axis. The rescued persons were reunited with their families while the recovered livestock were handed over to the Local Government Chairmen of Bakura and Tureta respectively for further action.

In another development, troops of 1 Brigade Forward Operating Base Lilo in Gusau LGA came under heavy terrorist fire while on patrol around Lilo – Kofi Road in the same LGA. Following the fierce battle, the troops neutralized six terrorists forcing the rest to flee in disarray. Sadly, three soldiers paid the supreme price, while two others who were critically wounded later succumbed to their injuries.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA has reaffirmed its resolve to sustain relentless operations until terrorism and banditry are eradicated. The public is urged to support the security forces by providing timely and credible information to restore peace across the North West and parts of the North Central

Troops repel failed ambush in Borno, eliminate 13 terrorists, recover weapons

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have eliminated 13 Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists who attempted to ambush a military convoy escorting humanitarian supplies at Kareto in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno.
Reports have it that the ambush, which occurred on Wednesday along the Gubio–Damasak road, was characterised by the detonation of two command Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) followed by heavy gunfire from the terrorists.

Sources said that the troops responded swiftly, taking battle positions and unleashing superior firepower that overwhelmed the insurgents.
“In the ensuing exchange, 13 terrorists were neutralised instantly, while others fled in disarray. The troops then pursued the fleeing elements, further exploiting the area,” the source said.
During the operation, the soldiers recovered eight AK-47 rifles, ten magazines, and a large cache of 7.62mm ammunition, as well as a camel bag, several rolls of detonating cord, and multiple primed IEDs.
However, the encounter was not without setbacks. One soldier sustained a minor injury and is reported to be in stable condition. Four Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) tyres were damaged, while two trucks were engulfed in flames during the firefight

The source emphasised that the operation highlighted the troops’ professionalism and resilience under pressure, noting that the insurgents’ attempt to disrupt humanitarian relief efforts failed completely.
“The escort mission was successfully completed, and the relief materials have since been secured and delivered to Damasak,” the officer added.
The source further explained that the troops have sustained deliberate clearance operations in the general area to deny the terrorists freedom of action and to maintain secure corridors for humanitarian access.

Operation Hadin Kai continues to provide both combat support and humanitarian escort missions across the North-East, where remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP remain active in remote border areas.

Court Strikes Down 15-Year Compulsory Service Rule, Upholds Military Officers’ Right to Resign Freely

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has declared unconstitutional the policy requiring Nigerian military officers to serve a minimum of 15 years before resigning.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Justice Emmanuel D. Subilim ruled that members of the Armed Forces cannot be compelled into what he described as “modern-day sl@very under the guise of national service.” He affirmed that officers have the constitutional right to resign at any time.

The case, filed by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong on behalf of Flight Lieutenant J. A. Akerele, challenged the policy after the officer faced persecution, delayed allowances, career disruptions, and mental d+stress following his attempt to leave the Air Force.

Effiong argued that under Section 306 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Akerele had an undeniable right to resign, and that the label “voluntary retirement” could not override the substance of his resignation.

Justice Subilim upheld this position, striking down provisions of the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service (HTACOS) mandating a 15-year service period before resignation or retirement. He further barred the Chief of Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force from detaining or compelling Akerele to remain in service.

Effiong welcomed the verdict, calling it a “well-researched decision” that reinforces judicial protection of officers’ rights to resign from the military.

This will lessen Nigeria's dependency on Western nations and boost its own defence sector. The goal of the collaboration is to produce military hardware and equipment locally that satisfies international standards; Kaduna facilities have been identified as possible production hubs.
As part of the collaboration, technology will be transferred to Nigeria to assist it in creating capacity and develop its own defence sector. This will be a dream come through for me, especially in the area of producing polymer-based firearms from the traditional rusty AKs.
