Yeah, Banditry is there in the North parts of Kenya during and after dry spells. Just January this year, a news report showed how SOG in the north dismantled Oromo Liberation Army (Based from Ethiopia) who had set up camp on the Kenyan side of the border selling narcotics and weapons, which are then used by bandits.

Rooivalk Attack Helicopter (AH‑2)

Fleet Status & Serviceability

The Rooivalk fleet comprises 11 airframes; however, by mid‑2023, only 4 were operational, with several grounded for maintenance, and berely 13 out of 23 engines were serviceable.

As of early 2024, only 2 Rooivalk helicopters were capable of flight under restrictions; the avionics, targeting systems, and self-defence suites are predominantly outdated.

According to additional data, the fleet’s availability stood at a mere 30%, with only 2 helicopters available to support missions due to aircrew currency challenges.

Maintenance and Upgrades
In February 2024, Denel’s fixed maintenance contract expired and had not been renewed, putting deployments in the DRC and Mozambique at risk.
Nevertheless, a R 1.2 billion repair initiative was sanctioned in April 2024 to restore 4 Oryx and 4 Rooivalk helicopters over a budgeted programme spanning 3 years.

Modernisation Plans
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Turkish firm Aselsan details a partnership for avionics modernization of the Rooivalk, with the objective of addressing obsolescence and supportability challenges.

Despite these plans, substantial upgrades have yet to be implemented, and without intervention, the Rooivalk faces the risk of becoming permanently unsustainable.
Government of South Africa.

Atlas Oryx Transport Helicopter
Out of the 39 Oryx helicopters, by mid‑2023, only 7 were serviceable, with none fully operational at that time.

Some Oryx helicopters deployed overseas (for instance, in UN missions) were grounded, and several incurred damage during operations.
Only one Oryx remained operational in the DRC, with repairs scheduled for more through the new funding package.

Troops neutralise ISWAP cameraman, seize propaganda camcorder in Bitta clash

Troops of the Nigerian Army have scored a major psychological and intelligence victory against terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), following the killing of a group’s cameraman during a failed attack on Bitta town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Zagazola Makama gathered that the troops not only repelled the assault but also recovered a sophisticated camcorder used by the terrorists to record propaganda footage.

Security sources confirmed that the insurgents had planned to use the failed operation to generate fear-inducing content aimed at glorifying their attack and disseminating false narratives through online channels.

The ISWAP cameraman was identified by the equipment he carried, which included a ruggedised camcorder and media pouches strapped to his vest. He was taken down in the heat of the exchange.

The camera contained footages that is now being processed for intelligence exploitation.

NAF ENGAGES SOUTH-EAST STAKEHOLDERS, BOLSTERS PEACE THROUGH DIALOGUE

In a move to consolidate peace and strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s security architecture, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, has intensified non-kinetic efforts aimed at securing the South-East region. The latest engagement, led by the Air Component Commander (ACC) of the Joint Task Force South-East, took place in ISI-UZO Local Government Area of Enugu State and marks a significant milestone in civil-military cooperation by the NAF in the region.

The forum, held in Ogbete and Agamede communities, featured candid discussions around security concerns, especially public misperceptions surrounding recent helicopter flights. Clarifying these operations helped douse tensions and demonstrated the Air Force’s readiness to demystify its presence while addressing community fears directly. The Anglican Bishop of Eha-Amufu Diocese, Right Reverend Daniel Nkemjika Olinya, Senior Special Adviser to the Enugu State Government on Security, Honourable Vincent Onyeabor and the Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barrister Obiora Obeagu, were among notable stakeholders who lauded the initiative and encouraged continued collaboration for regional stability.

The visit, anchored on CAS’s command philosophy of “purposeful training and mission-oriented force development for enhanced national security,” is part of broader efforts to integrate local voices into security planning. According to Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, “True victory in any conflict lies not only in defeating the enemy but in winning the confidence of the people we serve.” As the NAF continues to leverage soft power in tandem with kinetic operations, its commitment to dialogue, transparency, and community partnership remains a cornerstone of national security efforts in the South-East and beyond.

ON MAY 18 2025 CAS HIGHLIGHTED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AS CRUCIAL TO OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has underscored the importance of Research and Development in enhancing Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational effectiveness. He also stressed that cultivating indigenous capacity to manufacture and service platforms is essential to surmounting some of the constraints experienced in aircraft maintenance. Air Marshal Abubakar delivered these insights during the NAF Inter-Command Research and Development Competition, held earlier today, 18 May 2024, at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja as part of activities lined up in commemoration of NAF's 60th Anniversary Celebrations.

Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar went down memory lane to recount a poignant moment in NAF's history where, after acquiring 18 Jaguar aircraft in 1984, the entire fleet became grounded 7 years later with some having as little as 150 hours of total flight time majorly due to lack of spares or technical know-how. He went further to lament a similar fate with the MiG 21 aircraft, procured in 1975 and later retired in the late 1980s, with flight hours ranging from 43hrs to 469hrs. These premature retirements, he noted, underscored NAF's struggle to sustain operations due to technical shortcomings, echoing challenges in maintaining aircraft weaponry and other critical equipment. "This, once more," declared the CAS, "highlights the indispensable role of Research and Development in NAF's operations."

The CAS then went on to highlight NAF’s distinction as a trailblazer in research and development endeavours. According to him, "With the production of the Tsaigumi UAV to pioneering advancements like rocket launchers, heat shields and weaponization of Alpha Jet aircraft, the NAF has consistently showcased its competence in Research and Development innovations. These achievements have ensured the readiness and deployment of NAF platforms and equipment across operational theaters." Recognizing the paramount importance of Research and Development, Air Marshal Abubakar, announced that he had approved the installation of 8 diverse CNC machines at the Air Force Force Research and Development Centre in Osogbo. He also added that the NAF was on the verge of signing a technology transfer agreement with a company in Europe for the production of the 57mm rocket armament. According to him, “These endeavors epitomize our commitment to prioritizing Research and Development, leveraging state-of-the-art technology, strategic partnerships, and lessons learned, in alignment with my command philosophy."

In his opening address, the Chief of Standard and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal MN Onyebashi, elucidated the competition's purpose which he says was to showcase innovative solutions addressing operational, maintenance, and service-related challenges within the NAF.

The occasion was graced by Branch Chiefs, senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy and NAF as well as participants from NAF Commands across the country.

NAF AIRSTRIKES DEVASTATE BANDIT CONVOY IN KEBBI-ZAMFARA AXIS, NEUTRALISING SCORES OF FIGHTERS

In a major offensive under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has neutralised scores of armed bandits in a series of precision airstrikes conducted on 9 July 2025, targeting a migrating convoy along the Kebbi–Zamfara axis. The strikes were based on real-time intelligence, which revealed the movement of close to 150 motorcycles in batches, each carrying about 2 armed terrorists near Yarbuga in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State. After positive identification confirming the hostile presence, NAF aircraft engaged the convoy with devastating accuracy. Survivors were seen fleeing on foot and motorcycles, as air assets maintained persistent overwatch and executed follow-up strikes, effectively disrupting enemy withdrawal routes.

Following the airstrikes, ground troops conducted a follow-up exploit mission to Yarbuga village on the morning of 10 July 2025. At the scene, remains of scores of terrorists and their weapons were found in the area, along with several burnt motorcycles. This joint air–ground operation dealt a significant blow to bandit networks in the region. It underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s unwavering commitment to protecting civilian lives, denying terrorists freedom of action and supporting ground forces to ensure lasting peace across the country.
