@okomi562 in case you decide to quit, install gamban. It blocks access to all betting sites although it costs 1200 per month. The amount is okay for me considering how much I do lose to gambling.

Hi All,

Gambling addiction is one of the terrible habits/addictions that any person may have. It drains you financially, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

Do you find yourself going back to gambling after deciding to quit? Don't be ashamed to say the truth. I am also guilty of this.

Please find below some actions you can take to drastically reduce and eventually eliminate the addiction.

1. Cut off everything that triggers your addiction.

2. Replace your addiction with a healthy one.

3. Install "gamban" on your phone, tablets and computers. It blocks all access to betting websites. It costs about N1200 every month (12k per year). This is not an ad but I am putting this here because it can help someone.

4. This is the most important. Pray and move closer to God.

Have a fruitful and addiction-free year.

I need an accountability partner. Send me a message if interested. We call each other when the urge to bet comes and help each other stay away from gambling.

Starting a new career now is too late for you here in Nigeria as u plan to gather funds to japa.. Your current pay now could easily allow you to save and do exploits abroad...no future in this country bro
Thank you for your advice.

I spent years working in a bank. There is no job security in banking in Nigeria.

I am sure you know colleagues who were abruptly fired because the bank needs to shed off overload and stay in profit.

Keep your job at the bank and get all the necessary qualifications.

Go into HR but above all, if you are a young man, work hard and leave the country. Naira has lost value. Your 450k is less than 800 dollars.

Opportunities abound for professionals abroad depending on the country and if you are not lazy.

Get any western country passport. That passport takes you to 150 countries of the world with no visa. The world becomes your parish. You can move around and find opportunities.

Except a miracle happens in 2023 and we elect a good leader. Another 8 YEARS of APC will send Nigeria to dark ages.

People don't understand what bad leadership does.

Let me explain,

If you were 22 when Buhari took over, you will be 30 years when he is leaving office. If another useless leader takes over, that's another 8 years. you will be 38. Literally half of your life gone.

Good luck in your quest to succeed. I was in your shoe 12 years ago. Be determined, keep your hands clean and you will kiss poverty good bye.
Thank you bro

What role are you in currently in Finance?

I will advice to Stay in the position you are in
Add strategy to your portfolio
Finance especially if you relocate to Canada is viable compared to HR as you will have to learn the local laws and regulations but finance all over is similar
Bank.

Hi,

I am currently working in the Financial sector earning about N430k and expecting upward increase to N550k plus in November 2022.

Since 2019, I have been trying to switch to HR. I have written CIPM and became an Associate Member. I am also running a Master's program in Unliag in Industrial and Labour Relations (HR). I currently have an opportunity to switch to HR consulting (entry level position with monthly net of about 240k) in one of the big 4.

I have tried to switch to HR as an Experienced hire in the past but I always get regret mails because of lack of HR experience.

I have plans to japa from the country by next year by God's grace and will love to have HR experience before I do but the pay is discouraging as I need to gather as much money as possible

Should I stick to my current job or pick the HR entry level job? What would you advise?

Career / Re: Today, I Quit Gambling!!! by biggieman1: 3:38pm On May 10, 2022
Profmetoo:
I have been gambling since around 2014 and never for once have I ever decided to quit despite destroying my life, career, relationships, and self esteem. It was as if I was cursed with it. I was so addicted to gambling that I'd rather gamble with my money than to buy cloths on my body. I've read so many stories here on nairaland from people who suffered similar faith, but I'd be looking out for comments from people who would say gambling isn't that bad just to encourage myself. Now I'm at level zero. I have no job, no money, no relationship, but friends who are also addicts. I'm cutting them off.

I believe it's not too late for me to make it in life, so I'm believing in God for miracles. Some people might think i can still relapse when i make some money, but so help me God I won't. I have eradicated anything that'd remind me of gambling, deactivated my betting account and focusing on how to make my life better. Betting can never get you rich. It is what I've come to realize anyways.

I don't want to ever return to gambling even when I make enough money. Right now I'm just looking for money to eat and survive.

I hope those going through same would take that bold step and come out of that shell of bondage. It is well.

I'll update my progress once in a while on this thread.

Congratulations on taking the decision to quit... It is not easy but you can do it.

You will start experiencing a peaceful and less frustrating life the day you put an end to betting addiction and you stick to your decision
I agree. The last two days have been peaceful. I have intentionally block all sport handles on every social media platform that I use. The urge to bet has reduced drastically.

Yes o. There is no such thing as being discipline in betting. It leads to addiction most of the time. That was what happened in my own case.

Gamble is fun
Gamble ruins
Gamble is risks
It all depends on your strategy and desires, you remember the rules of gamble, don't bet what you can't afford to loss.
As for me I have a strategy that am working on that's why I don't see it as a gamble...
Maybe there is a strategy. For me, I have accepted my losses and ready to let go.

Everything in life is about planning. I can bet some money that you have never used the Google sheets before as shown below.
This is my January betting journey. You can see that I didn't make much profit. That was just to test run the strategy.
You can't just go and be using 100 to win 100k and you expect to win.
Lower your expectations and discipline yourself.
The answer is No, I have not used Google sheets like this. I have tried all. Staked high on low odds and and low on high odds.

I have lost millions to gambling. I have no interest anymore. I am focused on stopping now.

Gambling doesn't ruin
I thought so initially. I hope when you lose, you don't start chasing losses because I did. Now I just want to stop. They can keep my losses. This is acceptance stage for me.

Honestly, I wish I could be like you. I have lost so much money and have been chasing my losses since and in the process losing more money. I have exhausted my savings, even borrowed sef cry.

Where do I even start?

I opened this thread to document my gambling addiction and how I plan to overcome it.

I started gambling around 2015. It started as fun until I got addicted to it. Prior to this addiction, I was very good with money and saved the little I had then but it has been hard saving money since I was introduced to betting.

I have tried to stop gambling like four times now but I found myself going back to it. I have taken the final decision to stop now and done the following;

1. Sent emails to the customer care agents of all betting website I bet on to block my accounts.
2. Installed "gamban" on my phone to prevent access to all betting websites/application.
3. Deleted all betting applications including flashscore from my phone.
4. Unfollow all accounts on social media that post or tweet about betting or sports.
5. Open a target piggyvest account to improve my saving culture.
6. Talking to someone about my addiction. I have chosen Nairaland for this. Hence, this thread.
7. I am currently searching for a healthy hobby or activity to replace gambling. I read somewhere that the faster way to overcoming gambling is by replacing with a healthy hobby or activity. Please recommend if you know any.

I will update this thread with my progress every other day. I pray for the Lord's strength and grace on this journey cry.

I posted this here because I believe there are people here who are struggling with the same addiction. We can start this journey together.

This is my Day 1.
