IS IT A CRIME FOR SUCCESSFUL WOMEN TO REMAIN SINGLE? http://mrrightsng..com/2014/10/is-it-crime-for-successful-women-to.html Viola Okolie, a friend on facebook shared this status. Am sure she won't sue me for plagiarism Seriously, why do Nigerian men think it is a crime to be successful and remain single? One of the best lines from a song that keeps thrilling me over and over again. .. "I'd rather be alone than unhappy". Have they ever paused to consider that a lot of women would rather be alone than unhappy? Your search keeps turning up goat droppings rolled in mud, why keep searching? Why not polish yourself for yourself and make something of yourself? Seriously, some men think once you have a watchamacallit you are good to go for any woman. Well some women have been there and done that and would rather wait for someone they find worthy, or not at all if it gets to that. Wallahi, all these side talk about successful single women is irritating. And for the ladies, una no dey shame! Open your mouths and label your fellow woman? So what if she is a divorcee? You can never tell a story you have never lived and can never judge an experience you have never been through. So what if she is a single parent? So what if she is single and advanced in age? So what if she is pregnant and no man in sight? So what if she is loving a church rat? So what if she is on her second or third marriage? So what? So bloody what? We are our own worst enemies sha o! Men be acting like they are the best gift to women ever, women be validating that misplaced impression. Men: If you don't have what it takes to make a woman happy, if you are not willing to commit to a fulfilling relationship however long it lasts, biko, trafficate left. Try your luck elsewhere, there might be someone else willing to tolerate your BS. Women: Take a break from beefing yourselves to understand that all a woman wants is to be happy. If she finds that happiness being whatever you are gossiping about, let her be. Focus on you. Make you a better person. Oh and some of my sistuhs, take a little bit of the facepaint money, and buy a shaving stick and some deodorant. Shave the forest underneath your armpits and liberally apply the roll-on. We can't have you looking like Nicky Minaj yet smelling like a virile he goat now, can we? #EndOf... PS: I have not mentioned money here o, before those that feel I am truncating their koboless hustle come and start hyperventilating on my wall. PPS: Just a rant inspired by some nangsense updates and posts, especially in the wake of #LindaGate, I had been jumping past. You might not agree with me, that is perfectly okay. No need to quarrell or call names, just state it nicely! |

WHEN DID GTBANK BECOME THIS USELESS? I do not know when GTB suddenly become this kind of a useless bank, but what one of My friend is currently experiencing is very frustrating and a betrayal of customers trust. This is what happened. A friend of mine (Ib) operate a GTB savings account in Ilorin, Kwara state, but due to his kind of job, he suddenly find himself in Delta state, a remote town that only one bank operates there (ECOBANK). Whenever he needs to lodge money into his account, there is no way to do that, but finally, he had an agreement with the ECOBANK in the town. One of the ECOBANK staff would receive the amount to be lodged in cash, then transfer the amount to his GTB account. This has been the way since he gets to that town. And if they need to withdraw cash for any reason, of course, the ATM is there. But for the past 3 weeks, my friend IB has been unable to withdraw money from his GTB account. He noticed it first when he went to Asaba and tried to withdraw with his ATM and it declined. So, he went to the nearest GTB to complain and they told his his account has been suspended. Why he asked, but they couldn’t provide any reason. But after much pressure, they told him ECOBANK asked them to suspend the account without giving any reason and they did. This is so confusing. IB went back to the town to meet the ECOBANK he has been dealing with and they said there is no any problem. They said there bank didn’t send any message to any bank to suspend his account. Why would they, they asked. IB also meet with the staff that has always been handling the transaction and he also confirm that nothing is wrong, that there bank didn’t send any message to any bank. IB finally find his way out of Delta back to his base in Ilorin, he went to his bank to complain, but still, they gave him the same story. ECOBANK asked them to freeze the account. On what basis, nothing they said. Its over 2 weeks, a customers account has been suspended, he needs to withdraw badly, but he cant because his bank said another bank asked them to suspend his account without any reason. He has been patronizing the bank now for almost a month, they keep telling the same story that ECOBANK asked them to suspend his account, no reason was given for the suspension, yet, he cant withdrew his cash. This has put him in a serious financial crisis. Ordinarily, a business he was expected to complete with 20k to receive his cash balance has been broken. He has also failed to meet many of his other financial obligations because of this problem. He could not even provide for his family during Sallah festival. This is so frustrating. Now, he doesn’t know what to do. How can they pay back all this difficult situation and lost of business? |
Human Right Icons in Nigeria’s history BY MR.RIGHTS http://mrrightsng..com/2014/10/human-right-icons-in-nigerias-history.html Do you agree with this list? All around the world, there are certain individuals who lived in the pursuit of freedom and justice for all and are recognized as icons and champions of human rights, such individuals include, Mathaman Gandhi of India, Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Martin Luther King Junior, Malcon X, and many others. Such individuals are also present in Nigeria and we have identified some of those who had stood and fought for the rights of others and the general good of the society in their life sojourn. These set of people cut across every tribe, region, and in religion. They are in every sphere of life and professions. Below is the short history of human right icons in Nigeria. Chief Gani Fawehinmi (The people's president) Top on the list of human Right Champions in Nigeria is late Chief Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi, born on 22 April 1938 and died on the 5th of September 2009. He was a Nigerian author, publisher, philanthropist, social critic and a human and civil rights lawyer. Fawehinmi, popularly called Gani, was born on 22 April 1938, into the Fawehinmi family of Ondo, in Ondo State and died on the 5th of September 2009 at the age of 71. While in college, he was popularly known as "Nation" because of his passionate interest in national, legal and political affairs. He was an avid reader of Daily Times and West African Pilot, the most popular newspapers in Nigeria at that time. Gani Fawehinmi was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the highest legal title in Nigeria in September, 2001. With his boundless energy, he tenaciously and uncompromisingly pursued and crusaded his beliefs, principles and ideals for the untrammelled rule of law, undiluted democracy, all embracing and expansive social justice, protection of fundamental human rights and respect for the hopes and aspirations of the masses who are victims of misgovernment of the affairs of the Nation. On June 11, 1993 Fawehinmi was awarded the biennial Bruno Kreisky Prize. This prize, named in honour of Bruno Kreisky, is awarded to international figures who advance human rights causes. In 1998, he received the International Bar Association's 'Bernard Simmons Award' in recognition of his human-rights and pro-democracy work. In 1994 he and some other notable Nigerians formed the National Conscience Party of Nigeria which exists till today and he stood for a presidential election in 2003 under the umbrella of the National Consci ence Party. In 1986, while Chief Gani Fawehinmi was Dele Giwa's Lawyer, the latter was killed in a bomb blast under suspicious circumstances. As a result of his activities, chief Gani Fawehinmi had been arrested, detained and charged to court several times. His international passport was seized on many occasions and his residence and Chambers were searched several times. He was beaten up time after time and was deported from one part of the country to another to prevent him from being able to effectively reach out to the masses among whom he was popular. His books were confiscated by the Federal Military Government and his library at Surulere, a suburb of Lagos, were set ablaze. His law Chambers at Anthony Village, Lagos State, were invaded by persons suspected to be agents of the government. The guards were shot, two of them seriously wounded. In the process of his crusades for the rule of law, the hopes and aspirations of the poor and the oppressed, he fought many battles against military dictatorship as a result of which he had been arrested several times by the military governments and their numerous security agents. He was dumped in many police cells and detained in several prisons between 1969 and 1996. His supporters have called him "the scourge of irresponsible governments, a sphygmomanometer with which the blood pressure of dictators is gauged, the veritable conscience of the nation and the champion of the interests and causes of the masses".Many Nigerians called him the people's president. Gani, as he was fondly called, died in the early hours of 5 September 2009 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer. He was 71 years old. He was buried on September 15, 2009 in his home town of Ondo, Nigeria. Gani Fawehinmi died a disappointed man, because of the state of his country at the time of his death, he refused the highest honour accorded him by Nigeria on his death bed.In 2008. Mr Gani Fawehinmi rejected one of the highest national honours that can be bestowed on a citizen by the Nigerian government — Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) — in protest of the many years of misrule since Nigeria's independence. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (The doyen of female rights in Nigeria and the Mother of Africa) Funmilayo Ransome Kuti (25 October 1900 Abeokuta, Nigeria - 13 April 1978 Lagos, Nigeria), was born as Francis Abigail Olufunmilayo Thomas to Mr Daniel Olumeyuwa Thomas and Mrs Lucretia Phyllis Omoyeni Adeosolu. She was a teacher, political campaigner, women's rights activist and traditional aristocrat. She served with distinction as one of the most prominent leaders of her generation. Ransome-Kuti's political activism led to her being described as the doyen of female rights in Nigeria, as well as to her being regarded as "The Mother of Africa." Early on, she was a very powerful force advocating for the Nigerian woman's right to vote. She was described in 1947, by the West African Pilot as the "Lioness of Lisabi" for her leadership of the women of the Egba clan that she belonged to on a campaign against their arbitrary taxation. That struggle led to the abdication of the Egba high king Oba Ademola II in 1949. Kuti was the mother of the activists Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a musician, Beko Ransome-Kuti, a doctor, and Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a doctor and a former health minister of Nigeria. She was also grandmother to musicians Seun Kuti and Femi Kuti. Throughout her career, she was known as an educator and activist. She and Elizabeth Adekogbe provided dynamic leadership for women's rights in the '50s. She founded an organization for women in Abeokuta, with a membership tally of over 20 000 individuals spanning both literate and illiterate women. Ransome-Kuti launched the organization into public consciousness when she rallied women against price controls which were hurting the female merchants of the Abeokuta markets. Trading was one of the major occupations of women in the Western Nigeria of the time. In 1949, she led a protest against Native Authorities, especially against the Alake of Egbaland. She presented documents alleging abuse of authority by the Alake, who had been granted the right to collect the taxes by his colonial suzerain, the Government of the United Kingdom. He subsequently relinquished his crown for a time due to the affair. She also oversaw the successful abolishing of separate tax rates for women. In 1953, she founded the Federation of Nigerian Women Societies which subsequently formed an alliance with the Women's International Democratic Federation. Funmilayo Ransome Kuti campaigned for women's votes', and she was for many years a member of the ruling National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons party, but was later expelled when she was not elected to a federal parliamentary seat. At the NCNC, she was the treasurer and subsequent president of the Western NCNC women's Association. After her suspension, her political voice was diminished due to the direction of national politics, as both of the more powerful members of the opposition, Awolowo and Adegbenro, had support close by. However, she never truly ended her activism. In the 1950s, she was one of the few women elected to the house of chiefs. At the time, this was one of her homeland's most influential bodies. During the Cold War and before the independence of Nigeria, Funmilayo Kuti travelled widely and angered the Nigerian as well as British and American Governments by her contacts with the Eastern Bloc. This included her travel to the former USSR, Hungary and China where she met Mao Zedong. In 1956, her passport was not renewed by the government because it was said that "it can be assumed that it is her intention to influence women with communist ideas and policies."She was also refused a U.S. visa because the American government alleged that she was a communist. In old age, her activism was over-shadowed by that of her three sons, who provided effective opposition to various Nigerian military juntas. In 1978 Funmilayo was thrown from a second-floor window in her son Fela's compound, a commune known as the Kalakuta Republic, was stormed by one thousand armed military personnel. She lapsed into a coma in February of that year, and died on 13 April 1978, as a result of her injuries. She is a Winner of the Lenin Peace Prize. Margaret Ekpo (A woman of substance) Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006) was a Nigerian women's rights activist and social mobilizer who was a pioneering female politician in Nigeria's First Republic and a leading member of a class of traditional Nigerian women activists, many of whom rallied women beyond notions of ethnic solidarity. She played major roles as a grassroot and nationalist politician in the Eastern Nigerian city of Aba, in the era of an hierarchical and male-dominated movement towards independence, with her rise not the least helped by the socialization of women's role into that of helpmates or appendages to the careers of males. Margaret Ekpo's first direct participation in political ideas and association was in 1945. Her husband was indignant with the colonial administrators treatment of indigenous Nigerian doctors but as a civil servant, he could not attend meetings to discuss the matter. Margaret Ekpo then attended meetings in place of her husband, the meetings were organized to discuss the discriminatory practices of the colonial administration in the city and to fight cultural and racial imbalance in administrative promotions. She later attended a political rally and was the only woman at the rally, which saw fiery speeches from Mbonu Ojike, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Herbert Macaulay. By the end of the decade, she had organized a Market Women Association in Aba to unionize market women in the city. She used the association to promote women solidarity as a platform to fight for the economic rights of women, economic protections and expansionary political rights of women. Margaret Ekpo's awareness of growing movements for civil rights for women around the world prodded her into demanding the same for the women in her country and to fight the discriminatory and oppressive political and civil role colonialism played in the subjugation of women. She felt that women abroad including those in Britain, were already fighting for civil rights and had more voice in political and civil matters than their counterparts in Nigeria. She later joined the decolonization-leading National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NGNC), as a platform to represent a marginalized group. In the 1950s, she also teamed up with Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti to protest killings at an Enugu coal mine; the victims were leaders protesting colonial colonial practices at the tine. In 1953, Ekpo was nominated by the NCNC to the regional House of Chiefs, and in 1954 she established the Aba Township Women's Association. As leader of the new market group, she was able to garner the trust of a large amount of women in the township and turn it into a political pressure group. By 1955, women in Aba had outnumbered men voters in a city wide election. She won a seat to the Eastern Regional House of Assembly in 1961, a position that allowed her to fight for issues affecting women at the time. In particular, there were issues on the progress of women in economic and political matters, especially in the areas of transportation around major roads leading to markets and rural transportation in general. Mallam Aminu Kano (The protector of the communners) Aminu Kano (1920—April 17, 1983) was a Muslim politician from Nigeria. In the 1940s, he led an Islamic movement in the north of the country in opposition to British rule. The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, both in Kano, Kano State, are named after him. While in Bauchi, he spoke freely on political issues and extended his educational horizon by engaging in some various political and educational activities beyond his formal teaching duties. He wrote a pamphlet, 'Kano, Under the Hammer of the Native Administration, and along with Balewa, was a member of the Bauchi General Improvement Union.. However, in 1950, he led a splinter group of young radicals from Jam'iyyar Mutanen Arewa, and formed the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU). Aminu Kano co-founded the Northern Elements Progressive Union as a political platform to challenge what he felt was the autocratic and feudalistic actions of the Native Northern Government. He geared his attack on the ruling elite including the emirs, who were mostly Fulanis. The potency of his platform was strengthened partly because of his background. His father was an acting Alkali in Kano who came from a lineage of Islamic clerics, Aminu Kano also brought up Islamic ideas on equity in his campaign trails during the first republic. Many talakawas (commoners) in Kano lined up behind his message and his political stature grew from the support of the Kano commoners and migratory petty traders in the north. Many of the tradesmen later manned the offices of NEPU. He also sought to use politics to create an egalitarian Northern Nigerian society. Another major idea of his in the prelude to the first republic was the breakup of ethnically based parties. The idea was well received by his emerging support base of petty traders and craftsmen in towns along the rail track. The men and women were mostly migratory individuals searching for trade opportunities and had little ethnic similarities with their host communities. He also proposed a fiscal system that favors heavy taxation of the rich in the region and was notably one of the few leading Nigerian politicians that supported equal rights for women. Mallam Aminu Kano is highly respected politician in Northern Nigeria. He symbolized democratization, women's empowerment and freedom of speech. Ayodele Awojobi (Dead Easy and the Akoka Giant) Ayodele Oluwatuminu Awojobi (March 12, 1937 – September 23, 1984), also known by the nicknames "Dead Easy", "The Akoka Giant", and "Macbeth", was a Nigerian academic, author, inventor, social crusader and activist. Ayodele Awojobi, in the wake of the presidential election results that returned the incumbent, Shehu Shagari as President in the Nigerian Second Republic, became very vocal in the national newspapers and magazines, going as far as sueing the Federal Government of Nigeria for what he strongly believed was a widespread election rigging. With all his court cases against the Nigerian government thrown out of court, he delved into the law books, himself being only a mechanical engineer, claiming that he would earn his law degrees in record time, to enable him better argue with the opposition at the federal courts. Ayodele Awojobi. JPEG.jpg He used the universities as a bastion, going from campus to campus to make speeches at student-rallies, hoping to sensitize them to what he perceived as the ills of a corrupt government. Ayodele Awojobi authored several political books over the course of his ideological struggles against a perceived, corrupt federal government. These books were usually made available during his public rallies or symposiums. Ayodele Awojobi died in the morning of Sunday, September 23, 1984, at age 47. Usually every year till date, a tribute or two in Ayodele's honour, would be published in the form of an article in a national newspaper, such as the one published by The Nation on November 5, 2009 titled, Tribute to Ayodele Awojobi. In October 2009, the governor of Lagos State Babatunde Fashola dedicated a statue of Awojobi at Onike Roundabout, Yaba, Lagos in a garden named after him.On September 23, 2010, Birrel street – a prominent street in Yaba Local Government Council Area – was renamed Prof. Ayodele Awojobi Avenue; a further tribute to Awojobi's memory. Ronaldo is worth €1 billion http://mrrightsng..com/2014/10/ronaldo-is-worth-1-billion.html Mr.Rights have learnt that the Portugal star's representative believes the 29-year-old to be history's finest sportsman and is confident he will break his personal goal record this season Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is history's greatest-ever athlete and is worth €1 billion, according to his agent, Jorge Mendes. The Portugal international has scored a staggering 19 goals in 11 games in all competitions so far this season and is already the favourite to retain the Ballon d'Or prize for 2014. Mendes - who claimed earlier this week that Ronaldo would retire at Madrid at the age of 40, despite rumours of a bid from Manchester United - believes his client will go down in history as the best sportsman the world has ever seen. "In addition to being the best footballer in history, he is the greatest athlete of all time," he told AS. "You cannot compare him with anyone. "He is the best player in the biggest sport in the world, in which there is more competition than in any other. For that reason, he is the best sportsman in the world." When asked what Ronaldo is worth should any club attempt and audacious bid, Mendes replied: "The price that is stated in his release clause – €1bn." Mendes also believes the Portugal captain will be able to break his own personal record of 60 goals in a single season provided he can stay fit in 2014-15. "I'm sure that he will beat his personal record if he does not have any physical problems," he added. "For Cristiano, nothing is impossible. He is going to continue evolving and improving until he retires. "Notice how Cristiano is a winger – he's not a striker – and his numbers are outrageous. He plays very far from goal and has to make significant efforts to arrive into the box. For that, he deserves even more credit for what he achieves." |
ISIL is not Islamic http://mrrightsng..com/2014/10/isil-is-not-islamic.html Tariq Ramadan: 'ISIL is not Islamic' The prominent Muslim academic on the threat of the Islamic State group and how scholars are failing the Muslim world. An 'Islamic Caliphate', a 'Caliph' - terms that now in headlines across the globe, mostly thanks to one extremist group, The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). As ISIL captures territory declaring their caliphate, minorities have fled and journalists have been beheaded. Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIL, has called on Muslims to take up arms, and thousands of fighters from around the world have travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight for the self-declared caliphate. They are distorting the whole message. So we have to respond to this by saying ... what you are doing, killing innocent people, implementing so-called 'Sharia' or the so-called 'Islamic State', this is against everything that is coming from Islam. Tariq Ramadan, Islamic scholar The group's actions are causing a backlash among Muslims who see ISIL - also known as Daesh - in contrast to their religion and past caliphates famed for tolerance. More than 120 Muslim scholars have released a letter where they call ISIL un-Islamic and argue that the group is incorrectly using scripture to support its cause. “They [ISIL] are distorting the whole message. So we have to respond to this by saying ... what you are doing, killing innocent people, implementing so-called 'Sharia' or the so-called 'Islamic State', this is against everything that is coming from Islam," says Tariq Ramadan, a prominent Islamic scholar. "It is not a caliphate," Ramadan says about ISIL. "It is just people playing with politics referring to religious sources. And this is why [as] Muslim scholars, Muslim intellectuals, we have to be quite clear about this. We have to speak the truth and be quite clear about the fact that if they are not representing what are the Islamic principles, many of the dictators today are not representing Islam either. "They have nothing to do with [Islamic] principles because our principles are clear: that the one who is leading should be chosen by people who are followers or citizens. So many countries who are dealing with the West are not as bad as Daesh (ISIL) today, but they are bad," he adds. Ramadan concedes that those who speak for the mainstream understanding of Islam face a challenge for the hearts and minds of Muslims. “The main problems of Muslims are coming from the Muslims; from Muslim-majority countries," he says. "And then when we start to be critical and say we are going to speak out against all the dictators, then some of the scholars who responded to Daesh today and are speaking about the so-called Islamic State, saying this is wrong in Islam, they are the same scholars that are supporting dictators." This week on Talk to Al Jazeera, Tariq Ramadan speaks to Sami Zeidan about the threat of ISIL, why Islamic scholars are failing the Muslim world, and the role played by global powers and regional dictators. |

Linda Ikeji may be guilty BY MR.RIGHTS I have read many reports about the removal of linda ikeji from the blogging community. This is a sad news considering how much she has invested in building that blog to its present state before the removal. Before Linda’s removal, she blamed her enemies and one Mr.AyeDee who reportedly instigated google to remove her blog, but in my view, such may not be the way to go, as such claims by Linda may be misleading the public on what actually led to her removal. According to reports, Linda Ikeji Blog, was taken down on Wednesday by Google over the originality of the blog’s contents. Lately, the site has been hit by multiple allegations of plagiarism with critics allegedly prodding Google to suspend the blog. Although, Linda denies lifting materials without proper attribution, but that claim from Mr.rights investigation seems to be false. According to Linda, one Aye Dee 15Past8 has been working on her down fall. She said Mr. Dee and other tech-savvy publishers were out to have her website suspended by Google, angered by her success. First, we must take a cerful look at the facts before passing judgement on any individual, this is necessary to avoid blaming the wrong person for what I perceived to be a self inflicted tragedy. While It may be true that Aye Dee may have instigated goog le to act against Linda for using his content without reference, but certainly, this fellow has no influence over googles decision. Having read that Linda was indeed removed by google after many days of rumor, it occure to me that Linda might also be guilty and as a result, inflicted these situation on herself. From my investigation, It is practically impossible for google to remove Linda Ikeji’s blog because of this particular accusation by Aye Dee, this is not inline with google’s policy. Googles copyrights policy states that, ‘’when we receive proper notice as required by Digital Mellenium Copyright Acts (DMCA), we will work to promptly remove content that has been identified as copyright infringement. Repeate infringers blog are removed, and in appropriate instances bloggers account will be terminated. In general, any original work of authorship may be protected by copyrights. Copyrighted materials may be subject to claims of copyright infringement. The most common reason we take down content from blogs for copyrights infrigement is that they have published republished unauthorized copies of copyrighted content and the owner of the copyrighted content have alerted us that their content is being used without their permission. Google states. Explaining further on how it works, Googles term of agreement on the consequences of uploading copyrighted material states that, ‘’anytime google is properly notified that a blog or any part of a blog on our site infrings the copyrights of a third party,we will take it (the particular content)down from the site as required by law’’. WOMEN IN FASHION OR CRAZE? BY MR.RIGHTS Take a careful look at these pictures and tell me your opinion if this is fashion or craze. These are pictures of human beings, they are not animals. They are all born free and equal with every other human. They are endowed by sense of reasoning and in their brain, their conduct seems alright. These fellow human beings have freedom to choose between good and bad, they have the right to act right or wrong, they can even decide to dress responsibly or irresponsible, but these are the choices they made. Ofcourse, they have the right to do what they want and dress how they wish, but in your view, have they acted right by dressing in this manner? Your view. Freedom is not an opportunity to act anyhow, but an opportunity to act in the right way. LETTER TO GOVERNOR ABDULFATAI AHMED BY MR.RIGHTS http://mrrightsng..com/2014/10/letter-to-governor-abdulfatai-ahmed-by.html Your excellency, Dr. Abdulfatai Ahmed, Maigidan Kwara and Executive governor of kwara state. I greet you sir. May your days be long in good health and abundant blessings of almighty Allah. Amen Sir, don’t see this letter as if it is coming from a political adversary, rather, see it as a brotherly unpaid for advice. I get paid to give such counsel, so consider yourself lucky to have it free. If I want to write as a critic of your government, the title of this message wouldn’t be a letter to Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed, I would simply title it, ‘’MAIGIDA, THE SUPER ERRAND BOY’’. So, take the message and ignore other areas I might have wrongly expressed my thoughts. Before I proceed with this letter sir, I would like to ask you a question which I expect only you to answer to yourself. My question is this sir, any time you are addressed as your excellency either in public or private places, how exactly do you feel? I mean, deep within yourself, do you actually believe you deserve to answer such a title? With due respect to your exalted office sir, I am just asking this question out of curiosity to get some glimpse into what is going on within the mind of our most respected governor. By the virtue of your position, you should be addressed by such a title because excellency is (the title of) someone in an important official position, especially someone like you, a governor or other exalted offices. But beyond according the title of excellency to such a high office, you will agree with me that the word excellency was derived from the word excellence which means the quality of being excellent and excellent itself means being extremely good in the position you occupy. By this, it is expected that anyone who shall be occupying an high office such as the one you presently occupy is by nature, expected to act excellently to always be worthy of the status of the office he or she occupies. This is why I am asking how you feel when you are addressed as your excellency. Do you truly believe you are excellent in office as a governor? Do you feel the title is too much to be conferred on you or what exactly do you feel? I would appreciate you to answer this question only to yourself as this letter despite being In open,is directed to you and you alone. If I had other means of sending you this letter, believe me, I would prefer it to be sent in private. My Dear Governor, please don’t get me wrong, I am only concerned for you as a person because in my view, the burden of governance place on your shoulder seems to be too mountainous for you to handle, hence your docile kind of leadership since assuming the mantle of leadership of the harmonious state of kwara. Ordinarily as a person, I see you as an excellent and extremely intelligent person, but as a leader, nothing of such reflect in your day to day running of Kwara state government. Here, it seems not all intelligent and excellent individuals can replicate such excellence in governance. Sai Maigida, I want you to recall a publication made in june, 2013 by the source magazine,it was titled, ‘’the most powerless governor in Nigeria’’. I am sure you read it and some how feel embarrassed or angry for such a publication, but you are not alone despair. Just as you felt bad, many Kwarans both home and abroad felt the same way. But instead of feeling angry or embarrassed by the publication, you should actually be thankful to the magazine and the writers. Through that publication, you should have asked yourself that, out of the 36 states governor in Nigeria, why am I singled out as the most powerless governor in the country? If they say its because godfatherism exists in Kwara, is Kwara the only state where godfatherism exists? Why was I described as the most powerless governor in Nigeria you should have ask inwardly. Again, it would interest you to know that, ever since Nigeria was created, there was no governor described as the most powerless governor, you happens to be the first in Nigerian history. So, that publication should have served as an opportunity to prove all doubters wrong about your personality, you should have carefully considered some of the issues raised and properly reverse the ugly trend, but looking at how things are now, it seems nothing has changed for good since the publication. In addition, before I go into discussing godfatherism, let me quickly ask you as an individual, why do you seek political power? Why do you want to be a governor? Why do you want to occupy any office at all? To the best of my knowledge, everyone who seek political power Is doing so for just one reason, i.e, to be able to implement or establish their idea of an ideal society. While their might be other motives, but this motives seems to be primary to all aspiring leaders in world history. As the governor of Kwara State, there is no higher position anyone can attain in Kwara State beyond that, there is no office that can give one the total liberty to act for or against the state, there is no other office that can give an unhindered access to Kwara state resources, full political and security machinery and other privileges associated with the office. In a nutshell, there is no other position that can make one establish his or idea of an ideal state in Kwara than being the state governor. So, if one can become a state governor and yet he his unable to implement his or idea of an ideal state, not because he has exhausted all ideas and failed, but because he or she has restricted himself through a third party intervention. Certainly, such an individual can never do so ever again even if they eventually become the president of the world. And such individual is likely to end up in the dark side of history it must be noted. Now, let me discuss godfathersim which many believe is the bane of Kwara and you particularly. I am forced to ask again, Is godfatherism evil or good? According to studies, Arguably, a major problem of democratic governance in Africa and the developing countries of the world in this contemporary era is the headache of godfatherism. A godfather in the developing or undeveloped nations of the world is seen as “a segment of the political process as well as the figure, standing against the intellectual extrapolations originating in, and also sustained by the media”. (Churoke Nnamani 2004) Laguda (2004:44) describes a god-father in Christian parlance as a person who gives a name to child at baptism or during confirmation. He cites the Oxford Talking Dictionary of words as defining god-fatherism in both positive and negative terms. He opines that it could refer to a person who sponsors or provide care or support for a person or project, or a person directing an illegal and criminal organization. What the interpretation connotes is that a god-father is not a ghost but an identifiable person who plays god to his people. He makes available the wherewithal necessary for his proteges to live a fulfilled life, and if in crime or mafia, it could be an investment requiring some returns from the god-father. In summary, Laguda is cautioning that the meaning could not be a straight yes or no as it could impact positively or negatively, depending on the personality of the godfather. (Quoted from Salawu (2009). Further, in the view of Ukhun (2004), strictly, the godfather is simply a self-seeking individual out there to use the government for his purposes. The cost of this incidence is enormous to the state as what usually obtains is that when the incumbent godson is at pains to satisfy the whims and caprices of the godfather among other competing demands on the scare resources of the government, the interest of the larger number is savagely undermined. From the above, it could be seen that a godfather is not necessarily a bad person depending on the personality of that individual. So dear Governor, it is out of place to say that you are described as the most powerless governor because you came to power as governor through a godfather. Besides, there exist godfatherism in almost all state of the federation. How come Kwara state and you in particular was singled out as the most powerless governor? In my view, this was as a result of your incapability to act independently in governance outside the claw of your godfather. Many perceived that you are more intelligent, far more enterprising and more innovative as an individual than the character you portray as governor. Many in the state believed your sudden incapacity as an individual was and still is as a result of your inability to separate politics of godfather/godson from government/citizens relationship. You are perceived to have traded the rights and interest of the citizens to appease and retain patronage on your godfather. More importantly, many see you as someone who have traded even your own right to govern to your godfather. This is why many are asking, why do you want to be governor if you are not ready to govern in your full capacity as a person? Nobody would hold your godfather responsible for your incapacity. It is further believed that, if you act based on your God given intellectual prowess, certainly, you have the capacity both in term of innovation and managerial skills to do more than you are currently doing, but because you are in what people believe to be bondage of godlike idol, you are unable to act as you deem fit, portraying a powerless figure. Now, as defined by Paul (2004; 98), godfatherism is from godfather, which in turn is derived from the concept – god and father. God (note the big G) means a Being worshipped in the Jewish, Christian, Islamic and some other religions while god (note the small g) refers to a being held by some people as the maker or sustainer of an aspect of reality; a person to whom great importance is attached. He postulated on the analogy between godfather, and god-child being the person for whom one takes responsibility by making promises to help grow in a sphere of life, while the godfather means one who makes a promise to see the godchild grow and mature in an aspect of life like religion, politics, and other endeavour. He is further of the opinion that the idea of godfather connotes importance, notability, eminence, prominence, significance, weightiness, reliability, greatness of somebody as well as driving home to the godchild the idea of capability, experience, pragmatism, and resourcefulness. Its adversarial or positive impact depends on the personality of god child. Here you most understand that, the role of a godfather in governance could advance the cause of alleviating problems while on the other hand, it could aggravate an existing problems. Many Kwarans and the entire nation are seeing that your godfather and godson relationship with the former governor, Senator Bukola saraki is aggravating an existing problem and not alleviatin the problems, hence your tag as the most powerless governor. Let me conclude this letter by giving you an example of how to restore people’s confidence in your person while acting in your capacity as governor. In United States of America, former US president “Abraham Lincoln’s political adversaries once accused him of being an infidel because he belonged to no church, and denounced him as a tool of wealth and aristocracy because he had affiliated himself, through marriage, to the ‘haughty’ Todd and Edward families of Springfield. Just as yourself had been perceived of being powerless because of your perceived incapacity as a result of your godchild status to the Saraki political dynasty. Lincoln realized this accusations might hurt him personally and politically because they were accusing him of fraternizing with negative political godfatherism. He responded that only one of his relatives had ever visited him since he came to Springfield and before he got out, was accused of stealing a Jew’s harp. He, Abraham Lincoln, then charged the people that if he could be seen as being a member of a proud, aristocratic family and fraternising with negative godfatherism then, he could be pronounced guilty. Salawu, (2009). Although, his target audience was satisfied, with his response, others who were skeptical hinged their conclusion on what he could do if elected into office. You, unlike Lincon had gained access to power before you are confronted with such accusation, it is unlike Lincon who had to deal with the problem before gaining access to power. After Lincon became the U.S. President in 1860, he justified the confidence reposed in him through his actions which pointed to the view that godfatherism may be inevitable in politics but it did not obstruct positive achievement if one means well. Study shows that, the diplomacy with which Lincon prosecuted the civil war, the 13th amendments of the American constitution, which initially protected the slave owners and the eventual 1862 Emancipation Proclamation, setting all slaves free, the 14th and 15th Amendments which allowed all slaves to vote as well as vying for offices, were issues which godfatherism attempted to subvert but which the occupier of the highest political office in the United States of America could not compromise. Abraham Lincoln’s place in American history is a hallowed one. So, if your policies in government leaned more towards the interest of the people over the interest of the overlord, many would grow to see you as worthy leader, but the reverse seems to be the case as we speak. What would people say about you in history? This s not just about you, Some leaders have been orchestrated into office through godfatherism, only to use same trust to destroy their states and hopes reposed in them. The cold war affected the destiny of many third world countries and an example is the Democratic Republic of Congo which swallowed a bitter pill of godfatherism. Although, there were many leaders who have bastardised godfatherism in Congo, the role of Mobutu Tsetse Seko in playing the super-errand boy for his godfathers in the West was damnable. He aided his god-fathers to suck-dry his country’s treasury while equally helping himself through corrupt enrichment of his foreign accounts. When his godfathers sensed dangers in their continued fraternization with their godson, and the exposure of their unholy alliance, he was forced into exile where he died ignominiously. Study also shows that, In Nigeria, godfatherism had its successes and woes. Chief Obafemi Awolowo led a government in Western Region of Nigeria between 1954-1959 and while there, he was not unmindful of leaving a legacy of continuity. He was aware of the African proverb which says that “factory grows as man grows, but it is man that should grow first, after which he will use the knowledge gained to improve the factory development in its totality”. He left behind astounding legacies of institutional structures and men. Those he nurtured as a godfather are those offsprings manning the length and breadths of the Old Western Region, Spanning over six states in Nigeria’s 36 State structure which include, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Ogun state. No government since 1960 has equaled his legacies. They are solid and imperishable, and now serve as reference points for Nigerian generations. Awolowo today is not being remembered negatively for his godfatherism, rather, some positive accolades continue to grace his name. Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, in his end of year message to the nation as President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in 1964, emphasized the impact of godfather on Nigerian politics. He admonished Nigerians to dare to ombudmanize so as to expunch from the Nigerian body politics those parochialisms, whose souls are dead.Salawu, (2009). He was of the opinion that irrespective of how an individual got into a political office, decorum and accountability should be the guiding principle. By and large, godfatherism will continue to trail us both nationally and globally and the activities of those who benefitted through it will always be the barometer to measure its success or failure in governance. If you act well by being good and helping the masses live better, you and your godther would be praised and since the reverse is the case now, sir, you must work to reverse the trend within this short period. We recognize the fact that you have achieved some feat in some areas, but it is far below the state’s investment and expectations. Kwarans beleive you can do more if you act in your capacity. I hope to see the real Abdulfatai Ahmed act as a governor in the next few months before the coming election. Thanks and may God continue to guide and direct you sir. Abdulrazaq O Hamzat (Mr.Rights) |
