Al Qaeda's Yemeni wing claims Detroit attack Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the failed Christmas Day bombing of a US-bound aircraft, as the jihadists threatend attacks on the West and Yemen vowed no let-up against them. Al Qaeda's Arabian peninsula franchise acknowledged in the internet posting that a "technical fault" had caused the failure of the plot against the Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, US monitoring service SITE Intelligence said. The statement, which was accompanied by a picture of suspected would-be bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, boasted of the coup delivered by the "Nigerian brother" against Western airport security. He "was able to breach all the modern and sophisticated technologies and checkpoints at the airports around the world," another US monitoring group, IntelCenter, said. "His act has dealt a huge blow to the myth of American and global intelligence services and showed how fragile its structure is." The monitoring organisation, which specialises in following Islamic militant groups, said the claim by Al Qaeda's Yemen and Saudi arm marked a "significant escalation in the group's activities." It was also a "great cause for concern" from the point of view of the potentially widening ambitions of other Al Qaeda regional affiliates, IntelCenter added. The claim came as US leaders spoke of Yemen as a new frontline in the war against Al Qaeda after it emerged Abdulmutallab had spent time in the impoverished Arab state, apparently for training by Islamic militants who have exploited the loose control of central government over the heavily tribalised provinces. Washington identified Yemen as a potential Al Qaeda stronghold soon after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and established a counter-terrorism base just across the Bab al-Mandab strait in Djibouti to run operations in the region. But Yemen vowed on Monday it would not become a new refuge for Al Qaeda like Afghanistan, even as the jihadists urged new attacks against Western targets in the strategic Gulf region. "Yemen is a land of peace and security, and will never be a refuge for these terrorist murderers and drug traffickers," the defence ministry newspaper quoted a senior security official as saying. "Our mountains will never be a new Tora Bora for them," the official added, referring to the Afghan hideout where US-backed Afghan opposition forces came close to capturing or killing Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in December 2001. "We will hunt them down until we have rooted out their terrorism and cleansed Yemeni soil of their satanic crimes," the newspaper's 26Sep.net site quoted the official as saying. He promised "more operations against the terrorists and their hideouts" like those of December 17 and 24, when Yemen's air force launched deadly strikes against suspected jihadist targets. The official's comments came after a statement posted on an Islamist website in the name of Al Qaeda threatened revenge for this month's attacks, in which 68 suspected militants were killed in eight days. Tribal sources and witnesses said many of the dead were civilian bystanders. The Al Qaeda statement called on Yemen's powerful tribes to "tackle head-on this campaign by the Crusaders and their agents, by striking their military bases, the intelligence stations concealed in their embassies, and their naval vessels operating in the waters off the Arabian peninsula." Yemen is Bin Laden's ancestral homeland. In the most spectacular attack by the jihadists in the country so far, Al Qaeda suicide bombers killed 17 US sailors on the destroyer USS Cole in the southern port of Aden in October 2000. The United States has quietly opened a third, largely covert front against Al Qaeda in Yemen, The New York Times reported late on Sunday. Citing an unnamed former top CIA official, the newspaper said a year ago the Central Intelligence Agency sent many field operatives with counterterrorism experience to the country. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/29/2781845.htm?section=world |

Elrazur Who is condemning. . . . Jeez. You mean I am voicing concerns and pointing out where I felt things ain't up to scratch? Dude, if you have a product, you listen to the end users. If you are cool with the way spam, dublicate thread, insult, bickering, and rubbish post flourish on Nairaland, that is fine by me. Please do not just get in the way of people like me who wants a better nairaland. nothing personal, infact this is the first time lm meeting you online. Every system need to change, or else it would be consume by change itself. My argument is we need more than one moderator. Kosovo can only can only effectively address complaints, moreover the guy is not working full time. We need atleast 5 moderators to provide around the clock proper monitoring and be pro active. They dont have to wait for a complaint before taking action, they should be able to take action the moment they site a negative thread. |
Foremost, Seun most be commended for setting up a true democratic forum, even personal insults directed at him and the moderator are allowed, what else do people want from him. The nature of the forum is similar to the reality of the Nigeria state. Every single Nigerian from the president to the last man is tribal. In Nigeria the 3 major tribes dont like each other, there is at least one communal conflict every single week in Nigeria. The forum is only reflecting the reality on the ground, why expect something different. |
Elrazur Oh I know the process, you know, email seun, be buddie with him and bang. . . bob is your uncle. I don't play like that you see. For the record, yes I can do a better job. Threads like the one you made will be locked or deleted once it is spotted. I am that keen on enforcing quality around here. Its not about quality, its about naivety and delusion. Let me give you a better idea, if you think you can do a better job, why dont you set up your own forum, and we shall be their to judge you in 3 months time. All you guys know, is to condemn other peoples work. Step up to the challenge, set up your own forum, and we shall see how its compare to Nairaland. Nonsense. |
most of the criticism labeled at Kosovo is malicious and unfair, without first analysing his capability vis a vis the traffic being generated on the politics section. For politics section to be properly moderated you might need more than 5 moderator working full time. How could you expect a single individual to properly monitor such a load of data generated every minute, its crazy. |
Elrazur I have always challenged the moderation around here, and from what I can see, it appears that either the moderators are too lazy or seun is restricting their powers. Surely, it is not rocket science to remove a thread? It is not rocket science to enforce very simple rules to prevent people from posting junks? But I guess it would be a catch 22 and Seun aint about to lose revenue. SmileyWould you like to be the moderator, you seems to have the grand idea. I can speak to Seun on your behalf |
A preliminary FBI analysis has found that the device allegedly found on Mr Abdulmutallab contained the high explosive PETN, also known as pentaerythritol. PETN was used in the device worn by British "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, who is serving a prison sentence for attempting to blow up a Paris-Miami airliner in Christmas week of 2001. Mr Abdulmutallab went to the bathroom for about 20 minutes before the incident, court documents say. When he got back to his seat, he said he had an upset stomach and pulled a blanket over himself, the affidavit continues. "Passengers then heard popping noises similar to firecrackers, smelled an odour, and some observed Abdulmutallab's pants, leg and the wall of the airplane on fire," the Department of Justice said in a statement. Dutch tourist Jasper Schuringa, credited with tackling the suspect first, is being hailed as a hero by fans on the internet. The 32-year-old Dutch filmmaker said when he heard a bang and smelled smoke he felt immediately it was a terrorist attack. Mr Schuringa added that the alleged bomber had not become aggressive after the alleged bomb failed to detonate. "He was actually a normal person, he was very scared, he had a very frightened look, he wasn't resisting or anything," he told the BBC. "I also spoke later to one of the Dutch people who was sitting next to him and they said he was a really nice and polite man. So he was someone you wouldn't expect to commit a crime like this." Meanwhile, delays have been caused to transatlantic flights after airlines flying in to and around the US tightened security. Measures include cutting down on hand baggage, extra frisking of passengers at passport control and allowing more boarding time. BBC |
what else can the father do, US authority must take responsibility for the event. |
Father alerted US about Nigerian plane bomb suspect The father of a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a transatlantic jet on Christmas Day had voiced concerns to US officials about his son. The father, a top Nigerian banker, warned US authorities last month about 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's extreme views, say officials. US sources confirm a file was opened, but say the information did not warrant placing the accused on a "no-fly" list. His father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, is a prominent banker well-connected in Nigeria's political world, the BBC's Caroline Duffield reports from Lagos. In recent months Mr Mutallab is said to have become alarmed about the political views of his son, who is a former engineering student at University College London. He approached the US embassy in Abuja in November to voice concerns about his son, according to American officials. How the accused, who had a valid US travel visa, boarded a flight in Lagos to Amsterdam, despite being on a database listing individuals of concern to the authorities, is a key question, our correspondent says. Anti-terrorist measures in Nigeria's airports are haphazard and corruption among police, customs and security officials is endemic, she adds. Officials in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, told news agencies that Mr Abdulmutallab's name had been added to a security watch-list of more than half a million individuals, known as Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (Tide). But there was apparently not enough information to include his name on the smaller Terrorist Screening Data Base, which includes a no-fly list. It is understood that members of Mr Abdulmutallab's family are travelling to the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday to meet police and government officials. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8431470.stm |
Abdulmutallab, charged to court in US Mr Abdulmutallab was formally charged by a US federal judge at a Michigan hospital where he is being treated for burns after allegedly trying to detonate a device. The detainee reportedly smiled as agents brought him in to the room in a wheelchair, dressed in a green hospital robe and with a blanket over his lap. High explosives are believed to have been moulded to his body and sewn in to his underpants. He was immediately overpowered by passengers and crew aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253, minutes before it was due to land in Detroit from the Dutch capital Amsterdam. The suspect was charged with placing a destructive device on the Airbus 330, which was carrying 289 passengers and crew, and attempting to destroy the jet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8431470.stm |
Detroit Bomber's Dad Warned US Authorities in Nigeria - CNN iReport — The Detroit bomber, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, is now identified as the son of a prominent Nigerian, Umaru Mutallab, from the northern state of Katsina, the same state as its President, Umaru Yar'Adua. Umaru Mutallab was chairman of Nigeria's biggest bank, First Bank Plc, until a few weeks ago. Mutallab was the Nigerian minister for Economic Development in 1975 and also of Cooperation and Supply in 1976. He played a major role in introducing Islamic banking into Nigeria, but said he warned Nigerian and United States authorities that his son posed a security threat. The older Mutallab, left his Katsina abode for Nigeria's capital, Abuja, following the attack to speak with security agencies, family sources disclosed to a local newspaper reporter. According to the family members, Mutallab has been uncomfortable with the boy's extreme religious views and had six months ago reported his activities to United States' Embassy in Abuja and Nigerian security agencies. The older Mutallab was said to be devastated about the news of his son's attempted bombing arrest, expressing surprise that after his reports to the US authorities, the young man was yet allowed to travel to the United States. The family home of the Mutallabs in Central London, is currently being searched by men of the Metropolitan Police. Nigerian daily, THISDAY, confirms Abdulfarouk Umar Muttalab had been noted for his extreme views on religion since his high school days at the British International School, Lome, Togo. At the school, he was known for preaching about Islam to his schoolmates. After his secondary school, the young man went to University College London to study engineering and later relocated to Egypt, and then Dubai. While in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again. His father, Muttalab is a regular visitor to the US where he visits for medical check up and holidays. He is expected to issue a statement later today. Muttalab is married to an Arab of Yemeni-descent. The terrorist's father was born on December 15, 1939 in Katsina, Katsina State of Nigeria. He is a Fellow of both the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants (FCCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA). A versatile professional and businessman, he was the Executive Chairman & Managing Director of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the recently retired Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Plc Tags: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-374639 |
Would-be Nigerian Bomber Known as a Threat for Two Years Saturday, December 26, 2009 by Maggie at Maggie's Notebook The Christmas Day Nigerian bomber's failed attack on Northwest's Flight 253 makes us thankful that the plot was foiled by alert passengers, but shows that security in the U.S. is also a failure at critical times. Abdul Mudallad was known to be a threat, with possible al-Qaeda ties, for at least two years, was on a federal "watch list" but not on the "no-fly list." Would anything have made a difference? Mudallad boarded the flight in Amsterdam with explosives strapped to his leg. I can't get through airport security if my jewelry is in my purse wrapped in a dark velvet bag. How was this man allowed to board, and what is going on in the city of Amsterdam - a city with at least a population of 13% Muslims and the home to one of the most radical mosques in the country, Tawheed mosque, in the the Old-West section of the city? In 2006, the Netherlands' Minister of Justice suggested that Islamic Shari'a law be constitutionally adopted in the country, and a poll in the same year found that 68% of the citizens felt threatened by "immigrant or Muslim young people." Almost as many feared a terrorist attack by Muslims and a very astute 47% believed that if some action was not taken, they would eventually have to live according to Islamic rule in the Netherlands. Obviously the Justice Minister's idea of a good proposal for life in the Netherlands was shouted down. After the 2004 murder of Theo van Gogh the country conducted an inquiry into the radicalization of young Muslims. The usual findings surfaced: a feeling of alienation, disconnectedness with their first-generation immigrant parents and no shared feeling of patriotism for their own country was prevalent. Obviously, immigrant parents do a miserable job of helping their child integrate, and feel gratitude for the liberty their friends and relatives are denied in Islamic lands, and in many cases, we have seen parents who push their children into jihadist fervor - I'm just guessing, but probably to alleviate their own guilt for living among the democratic. Having said that, there are rumors that Mutallad's father's report him to U.S. authorities six months ago!!! More on that as available. Had the bomber been successful in blowing the plane in it's descent, imagine the catastrophe. While the loss of 298 passengers would have been horrific, think of the catapulting, flame engulfed monstrosity barreling into the Detroit airport, or into nearby neighborhoods or both. If, within a city like Amsterdam, we cannot be assured that explosives will not be strapped to the leg of any traveler, what are we to do? This man, Abdul Mudallad, was granted a U.S. visa in June 2008, good through June 12th of 2010. The world is in a mess because we refuse to face our future. Here are the details of the attempted bombing: Delta Northwest Flight 253 landed safely in Detroit today - Christmas Day, after Abdul Mudallad tried but failed to blow up the plane on its descent. The would-be bomber appears to have several aliases: Abdul Farouk Mudallad and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. White House officials have called the incident an "act of terrorism." Updates as available. Mudallah, 23, allegedly tried to detonate explosives strapped to his leg. The device is believed be a powder and liquid mixture. The Nigerian flew KLM Flight 588 from Nigeria to Amsterdam where he boarded Flight 253, a Northwest Airbus 330 with 278 passengers. According to ABC News, the suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to detonate the powder. Syed Jafry, of Holland, Michigan, told the Detroit News that he was sitting in the 16th row when he heard “a pop and saw some smoke and fire”. Mr Jafry said that people ran out of their seats to tackle the suspect. Dawn Griffith, from Pontiac, Michigan, who was waiting to meet a passenger, told the newspaper that she saw a “young looking” man being taken from the airport handcuffed to a stretcher with his hands bandaged. Peter Smith, a witness describes the scene aboard the flight: The man was "subdued immediately," Elliott said. Northwest is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta. "There was one guy, who sat on the other side, the right side of the wing because this was on the left side of the wing, and he jumped over the other people and he took care of it," said passenger Peter Smith. The suspect told authorities that he had explosive powder taped to his leg and used a syringe of chemicals to mix with the powder that was to cause explosion. This is of concert because it is a method of mixing that is consistent with terror techniques. There are unconfirmed reports that some passengers were injured. Mudallad is believed to have second degree burns. Naturally, the U.S. would be merciful to a man desperate to kill American infidels: The Nigerian suspect suffered second-degree burns and was being treated at the University of Michigan Medical Centre, where authorities were questioning him. On landing, the Northwest flight was directed to an isolated part of the Detroit airport as police and firemen responded. Mudallad or Abdulmutallab is believed to be an engineering student at University College London. He allegedly claimed he was following instructions from al-Qaeda, and indeed, he is on a US "watch-List" according to this report, but, not on a no-fly list!!! ABC News reports he was flying from Nigeria to the US for a "religious seminar," according to his entry visa which was issued in on June 16, 2008 - and get this, it was good until June 12, 2010. Brazil needle boy has second operation Boy arrives at Salvador hospital 17.12.09 The boy had needles removed from close to his heart last week A two-year-old Brazilian boy has undergone a second operation to remove sewing needles pushed into his body by his stepfather. In a three-hour operation, surgeons took out 14 needles piercing the boy's liver, bladder and intestines. Four needles which had come perilously close to his heart and lungs were removed last week. One further operation is still needed. Stepfather Roberto Carlos Magalhaes said he had wanted to kill the boy. He said he got the boy drunk on wine before inserting the needles, up to three times in a month, as a way of taking revenge on his wife. The latest operation comes after Mr Magalhaes, 30, and his lover Angelina Ribeiro dos Santos were formally charged with attempted murder. X-rays revealed some 30 needles lodged throughout the child's body. An X-ray of the Brazilian boy's body with needles inside X-rays showed some 30 sewing needles inside the boy Some of them are considered harmless, but two needles close to the boy's spinal column will be taken out in a final operation next week, a hospital spokeswoman said. Brazilian police said last week the stepfather had confessed to sticking the needles into the toddler with the help of another man and a woman. Police said Mr Magalhaes, a bricklayer, told them his mistress had urged him to ritually kill the child to take revenge on his wife. The boy's mother had taken him to hospital in the north-eastern state of Bahia, suffering from stomach pains and vomiting. She suspected the child had been the victim of a black magic ritual after she found suspicious objects in the home she shared with Mr Magalhaes - her husband of six months - and her six children. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8429341.stm
