It doesn't matter how long was Benin as the capital.
I followed your argument b4 I decided to quote him.

You initially said because of oil.
That's why I quote him.

BTW, tho we don't have good leaders in Nigeria.
But, some leaders still dey try in their respective States and capacity.

Ekiti and Ebonyi are the poorest states in southern Nigeria.

They have the least landmass, they are not oil producing states.
Yet, I'm not sure if Benin can match them self.
So, it's leaders that matters.
what do you mean Benin can't match them?

if oil finish even Edo will go bankrupt. Delta will even do better than Edo since our GDP is higher and we generate more non oil related revenue.

oil will never finish. there will be oil as long as humans on earth. more oil is being discovered daily in Delta
oil will be of no value in the nearest Future, water will be more expensive than it.

By then you Deltans will realize you've be used

Hmm, you're right tho, Delta has overtaken Benin.

Benin should be in the league of Enugu, Ibadan and Kano.

As they are all regional capitals.
But unfortunately, they don't improve at all.

Both, Benin, Kano, Enugu and Ibadan don't have oil.

And they're all bigger than Benin.
So, Benin ought to develop faster than the rest of them.
that's now how it work.. how long was Benin the capital of Midwest and how much were generated during those period??

there are also Beni people even in our state owned polytechnic. people can school where ever they like.

Delta State GDP is still higher than that of Edo so we don't depend on only federal allocations.

the latest poverty ranking, only Lagos is ranked higher than Delta at second. which means Deltans are doing well financially. anyone who have been to Delta know it is easier to survive here .

Delta State was created in 1991. Benin has been the capital of the Midwestern region/Bendel since 1960.

someone from Edo should not be calling Delta backward.

we have already overtake Edo and they will forever be below Delta as long as this world is still existing
non existent development, when the oil is finished (10-20) years time you'll realize how your leaders have been killing your people future.

I agree Delta is better than Edo state (from 2005) due to crude oil found in that region but it won't change the fact Delta state aren't progressing like it should be

is it our fault that your land is barren?

no one is comparing Delta to that decaying Edo

apart from bayelsa there is no state worst than Edo in southern Nigeria.

maybe you should check the North. Delta and Edo are not in the same league.

if not for oshomole, Edo would have been the worst state in Nigeria
barren? You must be a joker

Most Deltans are still running to edo state to school, dey full uniben and ekpoma.. that tell you all you know.

The difference between Edo and Delta in job opportunities is that one has oil companies the other don't.

The two state don't even have constant power supply.

I still don't know how Delta is better than Edo state when most buildings in Delta are government own.

The truth is delta governors have no future plans for the state, it's just to use 10% of the money to work and loot the remaining ones while Deltans are clapping and jubilating because they are receiving peanuts.

Be ashamed despite huge oil allocations Delta state is still backward

He said in view of the current massive development in the South-East, the region has no alternative than to remain in the APC and support the Buhari administration. He said, “Given what is happening in the South East now in terms of development, I don’t think any project is bigger than second Niger Bridge in Nigeria today.
If you see that bridge, it is getting to conclusion. They will soon finish. I know that by next year that project would have been completed. That bridge was used to dupe our people for 21 years, I won’t go further than that.”

The Coordinator of the Ndigbo APC in Lagos, Eze Uche Dimgba, said the Igbo in Lagos would vote massively for the ruling party and continue to support the Buhari administration.
The president of the Igbo community in Lagos, Chief Sunday Udeh, recalled that Igbo people were not united in the 2015 elections.

Benin city has never really witnessed much development by past successive government especially the military. They did very few things to develop the city because they didn't care about it. They were not from the place. Benin is very ancient and far bigger than Asaba, but when both cities started afresh in 1999, Lucky Igbenedion took Benin city to the Era of our ancestors. So while Asaba was developing very fast, Benin was going backward. Its from the Oshiomole Era that Benin started trying to catch up with lost time by then Asaba has received a whole face lift.

The oil money that Delta state receives, blood of Jesus, if Edo receives half of that money, I swear to God, you won't recognize Benin again.

Na when Ibori mama die, that was when j knew that Delta state has money. In less than 6 months, Ibori used Niger cat to transform small Ogharefe.

See abeg, Delta state too get money.
Compare Benin to Oshogbo or let's say Ibadan. Ehen...not Asaba abeg
i swear to God, Edo state just need half of what Delta receives and you won't know Edo state again.

Delta, river, akwa ibom and bayelsa are so rich.. there's even one local government in river state that has 24 hours lights and good road just because of oil.

you mean Edo that have the capital since 1960 should not be compared to a state that was created recently?

the only state you can compare Edo to in southern Nigeria are osun, Ebonyi, Ekiti and bayelsa

there is no state as balanced as Delta in the whole Southsouth. Delta State has many livable towns.

there are livable places in all the zones that are being developed. we also have two state owned airport.

you can't compare Delta State with States that have only one or two places where humans can survive.

Delta is a new state. the good work of Ibori means we were able to move ahead of many states in short period of time.
so abia, Oyo, imo, ondo and cross river are better than Edo state? Lmao.

The thing is midwest then wasn't receiving huge allocation, if been capital was the key to developement then ibadan state should be the most developed state in southern nigeria but now owerri, enugu, and almost all south south cities are finner than ibadan.

The 4 richest state in Nigeria aside Lagos are
Delta
Akwa ibom
River state
Bayelsa

They all receive six times of of what other states receives, they should at least be six times more developed.

Don't forget nddc have more works in Delta compare to Edo state because Delta contribute more to their pulse.

Comparing Edo and Delta state shows how backward Delta state really is

I grew up in Benin in the 80s and 90s and I am shocked that most buildings I knew way back then I could easily recognized them because no improvement. No wonder oshiomole is like a god there cos the other governors including the current one are successful failures. Too bad for a city that moulded me.
exactly why obaseki needs to go because he's not doing anything

there is no way someone in his right sense will compare Delta to Edo. Delta is now ahead of the decaying Edo in everything.

apart from Benin, during the dry season..... because almost everyone own swimming pool during the rainy season...... where else in Edo is livable?

even the Benin pictures posted here are old pictures because I was in Benin recently and things are no longer as they look here
the fact is Delta shouldn't be compared to Edo state because it's one of the highest allocation receiving state in Nigeria.

Akwa ibom have the best roads and they now have their own airline.

River state has international airport and great infrastructures.

Delta state is still far behind despite receiving more allocations than those states

it seems you are a kid. so you don't know that each region was being developed by their own wealth until Ironsi foolishly centralized everything?

Benin was capital when we were in charge of our resources instead of depending on FG.

Following Nigeria's independence from British rule in 1960, Benin City became the capital of
Mid-Western Region when the region was split from Western Region in June 1963; it remained the capital of the region when the region was renamed Bendel State in 1976, and became the state capital of Ẹdo State when Bendel was split into Delta and Edo states in 1991.

Benin should be competing with Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria but instead they are do worst than newly created cities

please shut the Bleep up. You said Benin city should be competing with Lagos and Abuja forgetting they were the capital of the entire country..

It's delta state that supposed to compete with Lagos because they've port, huge oil and everything they need to succeed

See I think OP made a very unrealistic and needless comparison between Asaba and Benin. As you mentioned, I agree with you that OP must be a Benin man.

Let's ask first when the two cities became state capitals and which one deserves to be better developed. Benin was the state capital of the midwest and old Bendel state which covered Asaba as a village until Edo was created out of Bendel state and Asaba made the state capital of the newly formed Delta state, not more than 30 years ago.

Benin is a very historic city and it was not surprising that it became a state capital immediately at independence just like Lagos state. For me if OP needs to make a comparison it should be between Benin as capital of Edo state and Ikeja, the capital of Lagos state. Of course Ikeja is more developed than Benin.

Asaba is a growing state capital. If not for the wickedness of the past governors since the days of Kefas, Asaba should have been much more developed than it is. The same goes for the foolish underdevelopment of Benin by past military governments and politicians.

It is however refreshing to note that OP compares two cities and states with very rich culture and great traditional values.

Benin has a huge influence, as I call it, on the traditional institutions of a lot of towns in Edo and Delta states.
but do you know state allocation also plays a big role in development??!

Take cross river and akwa ibom for example, cross river was the most beautiful state and fastest developing state in Nigeria before their oil was ceded to akwa ibom, and now cross river is still where it is and it's growing slowly while akwa ibom is developing faster than any other states in nigeria.

Same thing can be said about Edo state and Delta, do you know how much Delta State receives compared to Edo State? It's like 6x the amount Edo state receives
