The outbreak of the viral hemorrhagic fever which was announced by Elioda Tumwesigye, the minister of state for health, has left one person, the index case dead, one person in isolation and over 80 others being monitored both in central and western Uganda.

Marburg hemorrhagic fever is an acute infectious viral disease belonging to the same family as Ebola. Unfortunately, it is often fatal. The modes of transmission (contact with certain animals – bats or monkeys – and between people – direct contact with blood, body fluids, secretions and tissue from sick people, animals or dead bodies), and the symptoms (sudden onset of high fever, severe headaches, general pain and weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, internal and external bleeding) are similar. During the incubation period (2 to 21 days), infected people are not contagious.
“As with Ebola, there’s no vaccine and no treatment other than supportive care (rehydration, stabilising blood pressure, reducing the fever, administering pain-killers and antiemetics),” explains Dr Estrella LASRY, MSF’s adviser on tropical diseases. “The last Marburg epidemic in Uganda was in 2012. It lasted just over two months. There were 20 cases and 45% of them were fatal. That same year there were also 2 Ebola epidemics in the country”.
MSF has been working in Uganda since 1986. “Usually, we run HIV and AIDS-related activities. Boko Haram Attacks Borno Villages, Kills Pastor, 19 Others in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.
Pastor Eliud Gwamna Mshelizza of the Living Faith Church, a teacher with the Government Girls Secondary School Shaffa alongside 17 others were killed in separate attacks on Wednesday September 24th and Thursday September 25th after Boko Haram members launched an attack on Shaffa and Shindiffu villages of Hawul LGA in Borno State.
The sect men were said to have arrived Shaffa at about 8pm on Wednesday September 24th and after ravaging the village, proceeded to Shindiffu village on Thursday September 25th. They burnt down about 10 churches including E.Y.N No:I, E.Y.N No: II and III in both villages. Many of the sect members were however killed by Nigerian troops who came in from Adamawa and Biu during an ambush as the Boko Haram men were leaving the villages after the attack.

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday issued an official confirmation to reports that Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram has been killed by security forces.
After some days of speculation and arguments over who actu­ally killed the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, the military High Command has at last explained how the terror kingpin died.

A statement issued yesterday by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja laid to rest the doubt on whether Shekau was actually killed by Nigerian troops or not. This is even as 133 terrorists yesterday evening surrendered along with equipment to troops around Biu Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Eighty-eight insurgents laid down their weapons at Mairiga/Bun – Yadi while another 45 were taken in around Mubi – Michika. They are all being interrogated in conformity with the dictates of standard best practices, the statement noted.

The military explained that the person they killed whose real name is Moham­med Bashir, had adopted the propaganda of Shekau after the first Shekau had been shot dead. There is propaganda in the prosecu­tion of Boko Haram assault on Nigeria and therefore, they would never admit that their leader or arrowhead had been killed. Whenever one leader is down, they raise another bearing the same identity to create the impression that they are not losing the fight.”
The statement said, “the Nigerian troops have been conducting coordinated air and land operations in furtherance of efforts at containing the terrorists in the North-East part of the country. President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, 20th of September visited the collapsed guesthouse of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos.

Speaking to newsmen after the inspection, the president said there will be an investigation into the circumstances that led to the collapse of the building which has killed at least 86 people and injured 131 so far, most of them South Africans. He said measures will be put in place to check the illegal erection of high rise buildings in the country.

Lagos State Government aren’t too pleased with the collapse of Synagogue Church of all nations building collapsing and causing the death of over 70 people. The Government has moved against the popular Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun.

The structure, which was under construction, was initially a two-storey building before the addition of four new floors which were under construction.

As of Thursday, the death toll in the building collapse hit 80. Among the dead were 67 South Africans.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has, therefore, marked the main building of the church, asking for relevant documents to prove its structural integrity.

The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, who confirmed that the building had been marked by the agency in a phone interview with Saturday PUNCH, said it had requested that the church provides some documents, adding that a structural integrity test would be carried out on all the buildings in the church complex.

She said, “X’ (the mark on the building) does not mean demolition; it is for structural integrity test to be carried out on the building and the church is expected to provide all the documents for approval and the church has three months to do this.”

Asked if the building would be demolished in case the church failed to meet the requirements within the time frame, Animashaun-Odunayo declined to make further comments.

Ebola Contained! President Goodluck Jonathan Defends September 22 Schools’ Resumption Date, and pleads with NUT to resume on September 22.

Speaking with journalists yesterday September 16th in Abuja, President Jonathan appealed to members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT to return to the classrooms on Sept. 22 as there is no known case of Ebola in the country at the moment. Below is what he said…

“We have been able to manage Ebola and the whole world is happy with us and we must tell the whole world that we have managed Ebola and no Nigerian should be segregated because of Ebola. In fact Osun State was to have their festival and the news came to me to cancel it I said no, Ebola is no longer a threat in Nigeria and we must tell the world that we have been able to contained Ebola.”

Yes, Ebola is in the West Coast, it could happen in Ghana, it‎ could happen in Senegal or any of the West African countries or beyond but they have not closed down their institutions. If we still have Ebola definitely we will not open any of our institutions but we don’t have Ebola. I dare ask is NUT ‎saying that until the world is able to end Ebola is Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before Nigeria should open our institutions? It is not right. May God help us in this country. A man, his wife and all his 3 children died after inhaling generator fumes in Ipoyewa community of Ikorodu, Lagos.

The bodies of the family was discovered by neighbours last Friday September 12th in their home. All five suffocated to death after inhaling fumes from a generator which they’d kept in their room. According to neighbours, the man bought the generator just two days before the unfortunate incident and was afraid it will be stolen if left outside so he kept it inside his 2-room apartment.

When the family failed to come out late Friday morning, a neighbour peeped through their window, saw bodies, and alerted others. They broke down the door to discover the horror.

Residents of the community are blaming the family’s deaths on lack of power in the area. They claim the last time they had light was 3 years ago, that every house in the area uses a generator. They said they have called on the government many times to help them with light but their efforts have yielded no fruit. See the pics after the cut..

Indian girl, young Mangli Munda is marrying a stray dog to fight off evil spirits that her family believes she has. The dog was found by the woman’s father. The big wedding was taken care of by the 18-year-old’s parents, to the dismay of the wife-to-be. There were chaotic scenes as crowds followed infected man, who was wearing a wristband to show he had tested positive for the disease, and some stallholders argued with him as he approached. Liberian ebola clinic workers dressed in contamination suits was chasing the escaped patient through the streets after he left a treatment centre to visit a market.

The patient escaped from Monrovia’s Elwa hospital, which last month was so crowded with cases of the deadly disease that it had to turn people away.

One woman at the scene said: “The patients are hungry, they are starving. No food, no water.

“The government needs to do more. Let Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf [the President of Liberia] do more.”
An ebola patient left a quarantine zone and went into a busy market looking for food. Crowds followed the escaped ebola patient at a distance

Onlookers cheered as health workers arrived in their protective outfits and try to convince the patient to give himself up.

The man, who shows no outward signs of the diarrhoea and bleeding that the virus causes, refuses to return with the health workers and they eventually grab him and carry him away to a waiting ambulance.

Prospective corps members have been asked by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to pay N4,000 each before they can print their call-up letters online.

The public announcement signed by the management of NYSC and published in some of the nation’s newspapers as advertorials, indicated that starting from the next batch of those who will be observing the scheme (the entire NYSC programme is done in batches three of “A”, “B” and “C”), the option of N4000 will be made available for prospective youth corp members to have their call-up letters accessible and printable online as against the traditional system whereby the letters could only be obtained by the young men and women in their respective schools.
