ChimaAdeoye: Although Enugu and Ebonyi are the poorest SE states, Compare Chime's state secretariat buildings with
others built in the SE and see what i mean.

I smell divide and rule syndrome here.
We shouldn't let them do to us what they did to us with ikwerres and aniomas. There is strong possiblity these people create secret groups that go about creating enemity bw people.
American hardly encourage such frictions with europeans or fellow Americans the way these people instigate us.
If we are not careful one day one igbo group from south east will claim they no longer igbos.
Mind you that i am from idemili north LG Anambra state but I still would rather live in Enugu than anambra state

I wish they can just allow us to be for once.

ChimaAdeoye:

I completely concur with your statement of the usually low quality and poor-ugly design SE governors (EXCEPT) Chime usually settle for. I agree with you that Sullivan Chime's projects such as the Twin bridges at Ziks avenue, the state secretariat etc bear evidence of his trademark high taste and high standard. I have also regrettably realized that an ugly shape does not necessarily mean it is cheap! Some of our SE projects cost much more than projects in other parts of the country, yet they are not exactly eye popping. Imagine that the exquisitely designed Dutse airport cost just N11 billion Naira to build!!! If that airport were in the SE, it would have cost 10 times more and with an all concrete ugly design like in the second picture.

Airports require to have enough space to develop and reach their full potential. This takes time, and with time land poachers insidiously encroach on the airport land.Securing airport land away from land poachers in a growing city such as Enugu will be one touch hell of a job.
I think the greatest gift Chime can give to the AIIA is to guarantee enough space for it to develop into a regional aviation hub. This will be difficult as people will see the land reserved for the expansion of the airport as a waste of space. Chime should in the interim use barbed wire fencing to secure about 700-800 meters of land in front of the present 3KM runway and donate it to the airport to guarantee there will be space for runway extension when the funds are available. In this way, when the present runway needs to be extended to atleast 3.5 KM which is the global standard for international airports to enable safe takeoff & landing of the maximum cargo weight-laden Boeing 747s or airbus 340 huge airplanes to operate long distance cargo haulage flights to Enugu, there will be space to do that.
Likewise, the state government should also ban any building construction in the land on the airport side of the Ekulu river. The Ekulu River must be a natural boundary demarcating the airport property from Abakpa phase-2 being aggressively developed as we speak.
This area will be part of the airport as it develops into an aviation hub and will readily provide land for a parallel second runway which may be required in the future if the airport becomes very busy from being a hub.

The looming tragedy we have continued to observe since last year when the first international flight into Enugu occurred, is that land grabbers have invaded all the open spaces around the airport area, which will ultimately choke the airport of land for future expansion and rob it of the opportunity to become a true aviation hub in the future.
Some igbos are just fond of comparing with mediocres. It this self hate, inferiority complex, greed or sadism. Mark my word no northern state is well built and organised than any South East states(Aside Ebonyi). Why you guys keep comparing us with north is beyond me.

It unsettles me when people who should know keep comparing us with such places rather than Abuja, Calabar, Akwa ibom,Lagos or Portharcourt. Please some places are not worth mentioning talk more of emulating. I was born in Maidugri and lived some of my life there.

At the end of the day new set of skilled Igbos will be groomed in road construction and in future can outdo Julius Berger and other dubious foreigners used in duping Nigeria.

I've also noticed that you're not critical of Enugu like you are of Imo thereby showing level of bias on your part. Most village roads in Imo have been constructed in the past 3 years while urban roads have been reconstructed with covered drainages and walkways. I've been seeing open drainages all over this thread and you've not said anything about it. If we want to criticise let us be frank and devoid of partiality and blackmail. Just because Okorocha an Igbo man wants to be President or VP, stupid Igbos collected money and started lying and trying to blackmail him by dismissing or belittling his achievements in every aspect of governance.

Which other Governor apart from Amaechi has built 200 schools in 7 years? Okorocha has done that in 3 years and will make it 305 in his 4th year. Let us call a spade what it is and celebrate our own instead of selling our conscience for money.

Finally these roads have no difference with any other road anywhere in the world apart from maybe size, length and function. Owerri city has well maintained lawns. Only Calabar rivals it.

Abagworo pls leave this thread, you are a trouble maker. Very soon you will tell us enugu and akwa ibom need apc.

BlackPikiN: This is a near perfect idea. Is
there a way to hold an annual 1-week summit for all igbo professionals (home and the diaspora) in Enugu or any other place in the SE, to deliberate and talk about the social and economic development in the SE? It should be headed, for a startby Soludo/Ezekwesili/Okonjo or someone who's a thorough bred professional. I'm not aware if such group exists for the SE region.

What we need are those who naturally think outside the box such as the creative geniuses and open minded enterpreneurs. They can be found in all areas and not neccessary professionals. In the past many well learned people or so called profs swore that men could never fly , earth can never be round etc etc but you still have ordinary folks like wrights, galileo, steve jobs, enstein, mendel proving them wrong and doing impossible stuff.

Creative genius and open minded enterpreneurs (whether they are profs or ordinary folks)are all we need to turn thing around in the South East.

There are too many close minded Profs everywhere even with their first class qualifications

It is also far more cosmopolitan in both ethnic and racial mix than all parts of Nigeria except Lagos, Rivers and Abuja.

That said Kano probably has the highest number of absolute poor people in Nigeria and has so many slum districts that encourage spread of diseases, Religious violence and extremism. Enugu all round is more liveable than Kano but never as developed.

Pls post pictures of so called GRA in kano we need evidence. Can you bodly show an oyibo man kano as a city you are proud of?Define developed. Notice Rivers,Anambra and Abia comes before Kano. This means kano is not that rich compare the Eastern states

Again, how can kano state be bigger when its volume of cash transaction is less than Anambra and Abia

Comparing kano with Enugu is LIKE comparing Kano with Calabar Both state should be put in their place or category. One is great place to live and raise children While the other is a massive depressing slum only fools would love to raise kids.
