An igbo Engineer, based in Canada, Jude Igwemezie, has won a $500 million contract to build a monorail network in Iraq. Mr. Igwemezie, who was also trained in Canada, heads TransGlobim International, the engineering company that won the bid. The contract is to construct what is described as “a viable rail transportation network” for the city of Najaf. The network will connect three Islamic holy and historic mosques in Imam Ali, Kufa and Sahle. An elated Mr. Igwemezie told NEXT in a telephone interview that the project is billed to be completed in three years, and will be built in two phases. The first phase, he said, will cover the design, construction and operation of the system while the second phase will involve the expansion of the system and its extension to the Najaf airport and the final phase. Mr. Igwemezie, who said he has been involved in negotiation with Nigerian officials in the last 18 months to construct several rail lines in the country, disclosed that it took “only two months to get the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) executed with Iraqi officials”. Hinting at his frustration to offer his services to Nigeria, Mr. Igwemezie said, “as a Diaspora person, I kept coming back, knocking, to help Nigeria. On the other hand I can’t knock forever.”

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to grant Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), access to his medical records and doctors of his choice. In a judgement delivered on Thursday, Binta Nyako, presiding judge, dismissed the objections raised by the DSS for lacking merit. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/ 2341/2022, Kanu had prayed the court for leave to apply for an order of mandamus to compel the DSS to allow him access to his medical doctors, among others A. M. Danlami, counsel to the DSS, had challenged the jurisdiction of the court to grant the request. Danlami insisted that Kanu has been receiving adequate medical attention in DSS custody. The counsel said he has attached to his preliminary objection and counter affidavit, a feeding schedule that shows Kanu’s food preferences and demands. He added that an exhibit was also attached to show that the applicant is “dutifully and clinically on his routine medication”. But Mike Ozekhome, Kanu’s lawyer, told the court that the health of his client has greatly deteriorated. He told the court that a specialised physician hired by the security agency had issued a dire warning that the IPOB leader would not survive if denied access to high-quality medical care. In the judgment, Nyako held that it was within Kanu’s rights to demand and have access to his medical records and medical practitioners of his choice. However, the judge held that the independent medical examination should be supervised by the DSS, with the entire process recorded and sealed for security purposes |

Some lawyers, who on Monday initiated contempt proceedings against the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi over the continued detention of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, have raised alarm over alleged threat to their lives. Speaking on Wednesday at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the lawyers claimed that the DSS was threatening to link them with terrorism activities by allegedly referring to them as lawyers to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN). One of them, Tijani Ahmed referred a viral tweet on the DSS’ official tweeter handle in reaction to the case they filed and insisted that the organisation was planning to hand a tag of terrorists on them. Ahmed said “at about 6AM when we met this morning, the tweet was still there on the handle of the DSS. This was about 17 hours after it had been posted and had really gone. “At that time, it had been seen by about 2 million people globally, generated over 3600 comments, retweeted almost 5000 times and liked more than 2500 times. “The tweets which have been greeted by national outrage and condemnation is still on the handle of the security agency. “In the same vein, the tweet by the DSS has also exposed it very clearly to the world that the persecution Mr. Godwin Emefiele suffers today is largely due to the ethnic profiling as directed by the DG DSS. “The fact that Mr. Emefiele is Igbo and attained the height of CBN Governor to Mr. Bichi is an abomination hence his resolve to see that Emefiele is pulled down because to him, all Igbo are IPOB/ESN terrorists.” Ahmed noted that it now appears obvious that the DG, DSS has declared war on lawyers and Igbo people, claiming that the persecution being suffered by Emefiele is largely due to ethnic and political reasons. He argued that that it could not be a coincidence that several cases involving Igbo people were being serially disobeyed by the DG DSS. Also speaking, another lawyer, Maxwell Opara said they have resolved to write the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) governments, President Bola Tinubu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribafu on the issue, and equally sue for the enforcement of their rights. The lawyers claimed that the attitude of the DG DSS was capable of tarnishing President Tinubu’s image. They commended members of the public condemning the said tweet by the DSS. The lawyers demanded Bichi’s sack for allegedly manifesting open hatred against an ethnic group.
