Family / Re: On Average, How Much Do You Send To Support Your Family Back Home In A Year? by Bizmind(m): 3:04am On Aug 02, 2013
coogar:

there's no fixed amount - i send when my mind feels like it. sometimes when they don't even ask. i don't really think N1m is too much to support your family......you should be doing more if you can afford it
I can't afford more than that, even that 1m is kind of affecting other things I suppose to be doing for myself, wife and kids.

esmeralda1: @OP By 'your people' do u mean ur parents or your younger ones?
its good to give to ones family but are you married, so that if u begin to have more responsibilities they wont think its ur wife that turned ur back to them.
If its not just a family u send such amount to per year its ok but if its d same family year in year out they may make more demands as time goes on thinking u r very rich.
My siblings and in-laws.

Efemena_xy:

You think they depend heavily on you. Do you really think if you weren't in the equation, they'll starve to death and their kids will be thrown out of school? Honestly?

Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against helping out occasionally, but when it becomes a do-or-die affair, then you really need to take a step back and re-evaluate your situation and your pocket.

Sorry to say, but the general perception of Nigerians back home is that those in diaspora live on milk, honey and have deep, fathomless pockets that never run dry. If you let them, they'll leech you dry and come, say 10 years from now, you'll have nothing to show for yourself. Meanwhile, those you're 'helping' endlessly, go don build houses, start their own businesses, drive posher cars than you, etc....and yet, will still demand you 'help' them feed and educate their endless numbers of offspring. Take a trip home and see for yourself. You'll be embarrassed at how much progress they've made with their lives compared to yours.

You might think I'm being unnecessarily harsh here, but ask yourself this: Has there ever been a time that family back home has said to you: "No, we're alright, you don't need to send us anything...but thanks for the offer."? If anything, they're master architects of sob stories and always need funds 'immediately' or yesterday.

Learn how to say 'No' if you really want to make something of your life, while you're young, fit and healthy.
Never. And thanks for the advice.

carriecay pls leave my Solos for me ooooo. I'm the only person that post his jokes on nairaland, wen do u start ur own posting from? As for the people who take him serious, the only advice I can offer them is to go back to school, Shikeena! As to evaluate him, to be honest its too early for that. The guy just started, we need him to continue making us laugh for like one year before we can evaluate him. All in all, I like his jokes.
