Women's Basketball Names Amaka Agugua Assistant Coach Agugua replaces Tempie Brown who took an assistant coach position at Stanford. EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced the hiring of Amaka 'Mox' Agugua (Uh-mah-kuh Uh-goo-gwa) as an assistant coach on Monday. Agugua spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Old Dominion University. "I am truly grateful for the opportunity afforded to me at ODU by Karen Barefoot and Athletic Director (Dr. Camden) Wood Selig," said Agugua. "I enjoyed my time while there and am honored to be a part of the rebuilding process. I am enthused and eager to start my journey with Coach Merchant and the Spartan Family. I have always had tremendous respect for her as a person and a coach, as I have watched her success from afar. Not only is she a proven winner with a high basketball IQ, she is an even better person. I am proud to work for such a prestigious university in Michigan State!" "We are thrilled to have Amaka join our coaching staff," said Merchant. "She has tremendous recruiting contacts that will help us to build on our current recruiting base, as well as expand to other regions throughout the country. She also brings a wealth of coaching and student-athlete development experience, and knowledge of the Big Ten Conference, that will allow her to impact our program immediately. We are looking forward to having her as part of the Spartan Family." At Michigan State, Agugua will assist with the Spartan post players, while also acting as a key component in recruiting and opponent scouting. "I would like to personally thank Amaka for her recruiting efforts and commitment to developing our student-athletes over the past two years," said Old Dominion head coach Karen Barefoot. "She's done a great job here and I wish her all the best in her new position at Michigan State." Agugua's primary responsibility at Old Dominion was the program's recruiting coordinator, but in addition she was integral in the team's opponent scouting, practice and game preparation, and student-athlete development. The Monarchs improved from 11-21 to 19-12 and a WNIT berth in her two seasons, a turnaround that was guided by the recruiting classes that Agugua brought in to Norfolk. Prior to ODU, Agugua coached at Indiana University for two seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, and at Virginia Commonwealth University for three years, as a graduate assistant (2006-07) and assistant coach (2007-09). Agugua was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain at Hofstra University. She played in 95 games, including 82 starts, averaging 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in her career. Agugua is the Pride's leader in career field goal percentage (55.1%) and owns three of the top-five single-season field goal percentage marks. She ended her collegiate career 12th on the Hofstra career rebounding list with 568. Also in her time at Hofstra, she was a second-team All-CAA selection in 2003-04 and helped the team to its first postseason berth (WNIT) in 2005-06. Agugua earned her bachelor's degree in business management from Hofstra in 2005 and received her master's degree in sport leadership and administration through VCU's SportsCenter in 2007. Former Spartan associate head coach Tempie Brown was hired as an assistant coach at Stanford University on June 25. http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/070113aaa.html |
Tottenham are lining up a move for Leyton Orient winger Moses Odubajo ahead of the January transfer window. Odubajo, 20, is rated as one of the best young players in the lower divisions, and has played a crucial role in Orient’s unbeaten start to the League One season. Manchester United and Arsenal and believed to have talent spotters monitoring the player, but Tottenham are planning a £1million bid in the new year. It’s thought Orient, who have eight wins from nine league games, value Odubajo at closer to £3million, but the player has been made aware of the interest from elsewhere, and could push for a switch. Andre Villas-Boas has already had the green light from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to spend in January, and is working on a list of targets. However, while experience tops the bill, there would be room for Odubajo, who can play on the right wing or at right-back, and could be a useful impact player. The Greenwich-born flyer is known for his speed and pace, and has previously spent time on-loan with St Albans, Sutton United and Bishop’s Stortford before breaking through at the Matchroom Stadium. http://metro.co.uk/2013/10/01/tottenham-line-up-january-move-for-leyton-orient-winger-moses-adubajo-4129784/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan has withdrawn sponsorship for six Niger-Delta students at the Peoples Friendship University in Moscow, Russia. The students are part of the 24-student delegates studying in the university under a special scholarship scheme for Niger Delta youths. The students were found to be part of a group of students that attacked the Nigerian embassy in Moscow, on Monday. And for going on rampage and violently attacking the Nigerian mission, the government says these students breached the code of conduct for delegates on scholarship that they signed before their departure from Nigeria’. He described their action as gross misconduct, which the Nigerian government cannot tolerate. The students said they had gone on rampage because they were owed their in-training allowance for six months. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/10/02/fg-withdraws-sponsorship-of-6-students-in-russia/ |
By Oluwashina Okeleji BBC Sport, Lagos Abuchi Obinwa's father says his son is still open to the idea of playing for Nigeria in the future despite controversially failing an MRI scan that ruled him out of playing for their under-17 team. Despite having all the relevant documentation from the USA to prove his age he failed an MRI age-test scan when he tried out with the Nigerian under-17 side in July, Through his parents Obinwa is still eligible for the Super Eagles, having only represented the USA junior teams and not at full international level yet. "I think he would like to stay loyal to the US as he's played in every age group for them," the defender's father Nnanna Obinwa told BBC Sport. "The Nigerian experience is probably one of many that he will have in his chosen profession. We learn from it, remedy what we can and move on. "Like every adult, he will have to make the decision on where to play when the time comes. I can tell you the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) has been very good for him and to him. "But he would never close any doors and there is no decision to make yet. "For now USSF likes him and he loves the experience here. As a young man, what else can one expect. The USSF appreciates him and we appreciate them and what they do for youth development." Obinwa an imposing six-footer, who can play either in defence or as a holding midfielder, for Chicago Magic PSG based in Florida, has now put the MRI disappointment behind after being named in the USA's under-18 national team announced by head coach Javier Perez. "The result of the MRI was of deep concern to us and of course, the cost incurred was substantial," Nnanna Obinwa said. "Altogether, it was a good and different experience for Abuchi, he learnt a lot. Nigeria plays a different style of football. Coach Nduka Ugbade was phenomenal and worked well with the boys. "The goal was to start now to embrace his heritage so when he is older, it will be easier for him to identify with and give back to his father's land. "I would have loved a different and fuller experience but that is just my wish. We will take what he got out of it. It can only make him stronger." Abuchi Obinwa (second right) at Real Madrid's training academy Abuchi Obinwa (second right) at Real Madrid's training academy Spanish giants Real Madrid are just some of the glamorous clubs attracted by the creative defender cum midfielder's potential after spending a week in July at their academy in Spain. "Coming back to the US and being selected to the US U-18 side made any hint of an unpleasant experience go away." his father explained. "Visits to France and Spain were very inspirational. They gave him a first hand experience of professional life. He watched the senior teams train and play, played with his peers and trained under some of the best coaches in youth football. "He was selected to start on the PSG team against the French U-17 team. It truly enhanced his resolve in his quest to become a professional footballer." With talented older brother Nathan Obinwa forging a career in American football with Colgate University, their proud father insists the children have a right to live their dreams. "I grew up in the era of academics first and zero emphasis on sports but I have grown to realize that we are all different beings with differing goals and aspirations," he said. "We encourage excellence in all aspects of life, especially education, very important. So we advise them to put education first, but we support them with everything we have to pursue their life's dream. "I have to put my own goals on hold to make sure they attain theirs. Sometimes, that is what we have to do as parents to provide the best opportunities for our children. The Nigeria Football Federation have not ruled out Obinwa playing for the Super Eagles in the future either. "It is important to note that the MRI scan is not foolproof," NFF board member Chris Green told BBC Sport "We can only wish the young man all the best in his career and who knows he could end up representing Nigeria in the future." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24282432 |

Nnamdi Oduamadi has revealed he opted for a loan move away from AC Milan after Brazil star Robinho failed to return to Santos. The Super Eagles left winger said: “I really wanted to remain at AC Milan but I know it would be to my detriment as Robinho did not make the move to Santos and I did not want to stay on the bench so I decided to accept another loan move.” He said his loan move to Brescia in the Italian Serie B will afford him regular first-team football, especially as the World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner. “The World Cup is next year and for me to keep making the team (Super Eagles), I need to continue playing regularly and at Brescia I am assured of regular football,” he said. He has been severally loaned out to clubs in Serie B like Torino, Genoa and Varese. The 22-year-old winger has been at Milan since 2009. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/oduamadi-reveals-robinho-forced-me-out-of-milan/ |
