Foreign AffairsTrump Dashed Musk's Secret Pentagon Briefing On China by blamingthedevil(op): 2:34pm On Apr 16, 2025
Beyond tariffs and court battles over Trump policies, two pieces of White House palace intrigue emerged Tuesday:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suspended two top Pentagon officials, Dan Caldwell and Darin Selnick, as part of an investigation into who leaked word of a planned top-secret briefing on China for Elon Musk.
Axios learned that Musk or Hegseth didn't just decide to call off that briefing after the leak. President Trump himself ordered staffers to kill it.
"What the f**k is Elon doing there? Make sure he doesn't go," Trump said, a top official recalled to Axios.
Why it matters: Musk has annoyed several administration officials with his constant presence at the White House, his haphazard social media posts and his slash-and-burn tactics at his Department of Government Efficiency.

Foreign AffairsBiden Attacks Trump On Social Security In Rare Public Speech by blamingthedevil(op): 5:10am On Apr 16, 2025
Former US President Joe Biden spoke out against Donald Trump's policies, especially regarding Social Security, during a speech in Chicago on Tuesday — his first major public appearance since leaving office in January.

Addressing disability advocates, the 82-year-old Democrat said Trump had "taken a hatchet" to Social Security.

Millions of US citizens are reliant on Social Security to cover their basic needs, but there is a fear that Trump's cost-cutting policies and the efforts by his advisor Elon Musk to shrink the government will cripple the system.

73 million elderly and disabled citizens are provided annually with around $1.4 trillion (roughly €1.15 trillion) in benefits.

What did Biden say?
"In fewer than 100 days, this new administration has done so much damage and so much destruction. It's kind of breathtaking," the former president said. "They've taken a hatchet to the Social Security Administration."

Biden stressed that Social Security was "more than a government program."

"It's a sacred promise we made as a nation. We know just how much Social Security matters to people's lives

US President Donald Trump's administration has exempted smartphones, computers and some other electronic devices from "reciprocal" tariffs, including the 125% levies imposed on Chinese imports.

In a notice, US Customs and Border Patrol said that the goods would be excluded from Trump's 10% global tariff on most countries and the much larger Chinese import tax.

It marks the first significant reprieve of any kind in Trump's tariffs on China, with one trade analyst describing it as a "game-changer scenario".

Late on Saturday, while travelling to Miami, Trump said he would give more details of the exemptions at the start of next week.

Foreign AffairsTrump’s Proposed NASA Funding Cuts ‘troubling’-Musk by blamingthedevil(op): 10:25pm On Apr 11, 2025
Tech billionaire and White House adviser Elon Musk called the Trump administration’s reported plans to drastically reduce NASA funding “troubling” in a Friday social media post.

“I am very much in favor of science, but unfortunately cannot participate in NASA budget discussions, due to SpaceX being a major contractor to NASA,” Musk wrote on X, the social networking platform he owns through his xAI company.

Musk is the CEO of rocket manufacturer SpaceX, so while the Department of Government Efficiency that he leads at the White House has looked for ways to cut federal spending, he hasn’t directly been involved in discussions about programs where he may have a conflict of interest, including NASA.

Musk’s social media post came in response to an Ars Technica editor who wrote, “If you care about science at NASA, this is royally sucks,” with a link to the tech news site’s recent article about proposed space research cuts.

A draft budget plan from the administration calls for NASA’s budget to be slashed 20 percent across the board, according to Ars Technica.

China on Friday retaliated against U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs by raising its levies on U.S. goods to 125% from 84%, the Chinese finance ministry said.

“Even if the U.S. continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy,” the ministry said in a statement, according to a CNBC translation.
