Today, I had an unsettling experience in court with Justice Musa Suleiman Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja. He seemed unaware that a QR code represents an air ticket and was unfamiliar with AI glasses.

I argued that he is illegally occupying this role, as he is supposed to retire in 2024.

Unfortunately, the judge’s cynicism turned what should have been a serious discussion into a farcical display of analog reasoning related to what ought to be a serious trial relating to “cybercrime.”

Protest in Lagos

Young demonstrators under the aegis of the Take-It-Back Movement on Monday defied police warning and staged protests in Abuja, Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, among other states.

Clad in their signature orange berets, the protesters began their rally in Lagos at the Ikeja Under Bridge, marching through major roads in the state capital while chanting solidarity songs, under the watchful eyes of police officers.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had earlier urged the movement to cancel its planned nationwide protest, describing the timing as “ill-conceived and mischievous.”

However, in a swift response, activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore dismissed the police’s concerns, rejecting claims that the protest, scheduled for Monday, was intended to undermine the National Police Day celebration.

The Take-It-Back movement protests are usually without any specific demands. The “Take It Back” movement has been active in organizing protests and making demands on various issues: The state of the Nigerian economy, the president’s declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State, among other issues.

In Oyo, members of the Take-It-Back Movement protest held their peaceful demonstration in Ibadan, the state capital with security operatives on standby to ensure no breach of peace.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has called for immediate closure of the waterway between Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge due to damage on Eko Bridge by dredging activities.

Umahi made the call during an inspection tour of some bridges in Lagos State.

He urged Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to enforce the closure to prevent further accidents.

” The dredger that hit pier cap and the pier tumbled and they sunk,” the minister said.
He said that the driver of the dredger or its owner had been arrested, adding that the Federal Government would take a decisive action on that because the damage was much.

“I also saw a very serious dredging along Third Mainland Bridge, notwithstanding that the Federal Executive Council, about four months ago, banned dredging along a 10km radius from all bridges in Nigeria.”

The minister said that dredging near bridges undermined their structural integrity.

Umahi also appealed to members of the public to avoid parking and loading on bridges.

He emphasised the importance of safeguarding the lives of Nigerians and the country’s road infrastructure.

This was after a 72-hour work by construction firm, Buildwell, which was supervised by the minister himself. The bridge was shut down because a section on Victoria Island outbound caved in, became unusable and turned into an emergency project.

Umahi said a more permanent work would be done on the bridge after three weeks. The minister said that when the bridge was to be closed, there wasn’t enough announcement about alternative routes so that Lagosians who bore the pain of the closure would have worked out how to navigate.

He said in case of road or bridge closure in the future, the concerned Works controller or engineer must make full disclosure of alternative routes first.

Umahi expressed appreciation to Hitech Construction Company for its support and materials provided for the repair work, and all the engineers and workers who worked night and day to ensure that the bridge was reopened as fast as possible.

He also was thankful to Buildwell, the contractor that handled the work. “They didn’t first ask about price and cost when they were asked to provide their equipment,” the minister disclosed.

According to Umahi, the damage to the bridge was caused by the escape of sand beneath the roadway, which led to gradual sinking before the road eventually collapsed. The contractor, Buildwell, has constructed a retaining wall on piles to prevent further sand loss, stabilizing the structure.

Providing further details, the minister explained that the long-term repairs will be carried out in phases to minimize traffic disruption. The initial phase involves filling the affected section with sub-sand and laying a 450mm-thick stone base, allowing traffic to resume for two weeks.

After this period, reconstruction of the bridge deck will begin in sections, with traffic restricted to one half of the carriageway while work progresses on the other.

Umahi noted that completing the first carriageway could take up to two months, as the concrete slab will require 21 days to cure before traffic can be diverted to the repaired section and work can commence on the remaining half.

Suspended Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has explained why she refused to stand to honour, the Senate President, Goodwill Akpabio before her suspension.

Recall that the Senate had advised her to respect and obey the rules and orders of the legislative institution.

Rising on Order 55(1), the Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Monguno pointed out that “it is the Rules and Order of the Senate that when the Senate President is being ushered into the chamber by the Sergeant-at-arms, all senators must stand up”.

The chief whip regretted that Natasha disrespected the Rules and Order of the Senate on Wednesday and Thursday by refusing to stand up like other senators, as required, when Akpabio entered the chamber.

He called on the female lawmaker to abide by the rules, irrespective of any circumstances, noting that the institution must be protected at all costs.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio sustained the order and urged all senators to be guided.
