Bible Text--> 1 Corinthians 13:4b. By standards in 1 Corinthians 13, I understand that without love, I am nothing even when we have portfolios of preacher, intercessor, singer, diversely gifted etc. A man is nothing without love. What then is love if preaching, intercession and likes are done out of love? [Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a]. Today, let's discuss envy. Yes, envy! Envy is a feeling of anger or sadness because you wish you had something that somebody else has. Envy originated in Genesis 4:4-8 where Cain murdered because of envy. He wished he could gain God's acceptance like his brother. But he made a mistake for he had an angry and sorrowful heart. He should have cried unto God to help him do well instead but he bore ungodly sorrow like Judas, making him envious, which subsequently led to his [spiritual] death. "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." (2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV). Unfortunately, envy is among believers today. Many ungodly reactions [backbiting, gossiping, slander etc] spring up from envy and result in [spiritual] death. Remember, anyone who is spiritually dead will be cut off from God's Kingdom (Matthew 3:10). Examine yourself [with the definition given above, through prayer] to know if you have any iota of this evil, and prayerfully stop it (2 Corinthians 13:5). The Bible enjoins us to "...love one another. Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous." (1 John 3:11-12). Envy is not a thing of emulation neither is it of holiness as it is not one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Envy thrives against our call to love and live righteously. Shalom! |
It was 6am on a New Year's eve. Eunice paced round her spacious room as she was trying to count her blessings for the year as a way of putting what she learnt from a TV programme she listened to a fortnight ago into practice. She cried bitterly when she discovered that she didn't achieve much. "Wasted months" she thought. She did not get the good things she planned for because she was not serious with her walk with God, a mistake she realised late. She was lost in thoughts that she didn't know when her mother called her for morning devotion. "Eunice, what's wrong with you?" her mother shouted when she opened her door, unaware of her daughter's mood. "Good mor-ning ma" she stammered, kneeling down before her mum. "Morning my dear" her mother replied calmly noticing her daughter's mood. "What's wrong with you?" She added. "Nothing ma. I'll be fine" she replied. "Good! You'll take today's devotion message. Let's go to the sitting room" Her mother said leaving without a word from her. She hesitated for a while until she dragged her feet for her mother was a strict woman. Recently, her mother had gotten one of the messages from Blessytee-- a young female blogger via her Facebook account. She loved it and decided to print it out for her family to read the next day. While she read, she learnt that the best way to correct her mistakes is to stop repeating them. The writer supported this fact with the Word of God in 2 Corinthians 10:6, "...revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled." She corrected her mistakes by seeking God diligently and persistently; and she was greatly blessed. Writer's note: Eunice's life was transformed for good when she FOLLOWED what she read. Read good materials. Do well to follow this instruction, "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent." (Revelations 2:5). What are these first works? Do well to confess your sins (your past mistakes) and FORSAKE them (stop repeating those mistakes). Dear reader, I'll like you to say this prayer: Father, please help me to seek you diligently. Happy New Year!

Esther came back from market exhausted. She had shopped for all that she would need for the celebration, the clothes, shoes, bags and the food! She sat to think of what had happened in the market. She had met a lady who was "jejely" talking to her friend about people's actions during Christmas festivities. "Some 'Christians' celebrate the birth of Christ they do not know" This statement surprised everyone there, including the lady's friend. As they gave a "how-come?" look. "Yea. I'm not mistaken" she quickly added, noticing the way people looked at her. She looked scared; with thoughts that a slap could come her way. She however made things go worse with her "I'm not mistaken". She ought to go straight to the point. "You are sick" her friend retorted. "No. I'm not. Just hear out my reasons." People wondered what she wanted to say after that gibberish, how could Christians not know Christ? They waited for her to say further, therefore, they gave her more attention. Esther made up her mind to deal with her because she hates it when fools pretend to be wise. "What if an unbeliever is here? She would have disgraced Christianity. Just say anything silly" Esther talked to herself, looking at the lady with a stern look. "Erm, do we even know the essence of this celebration when we frustrate His grace upon our lives?" she added "This grace is given to us because of His coming" "Knowing Christ means maximizing His grace. How many Christians maximize His grace? How many Christians know Him?" "Hmm" that was the only thing her friend could do. "So tell me, who is sick here? When all you could do is to sigh" the lady teased with a wink. Of a truth, the Word is sharper than any two-edged sword as it pierced Esther's soul. What is the essence of celebration when you disobey God? Why do you celebrate the birth of the One you continually nail to cross when you disobey His Word? The celebration is irrelevant without obedience to God. Check your life, are you making good use of His grace upon your life? Don't just celebrate because others are celebrating. But because your celebration would be accepted of Him. And how can this be possible? Repent of all your sins as you confess them. Live your life to please Him. Sounding like that lady, how many Christians know Jesus by maximizing His grace? Remember, He's the reason for the season. Do what will please Him always. Shalom! Backsliding is a gradual process. It is the rebellion against God’s instructions and abstaining from living a christian life. From these definitions, I term “backsliding” as “disobedience after obedience.” A believer may fall back through neglect by not praying, nor reading the Bible and keeping his focus on living for God OR by deliberately choosing to indulge in this life’s sinful pleasures (CBN). In the Old Testament, King Asa made this mistake. He started well but didn’t end well as he broke the covenant he made with God in 2 Chronicles 15:12. He trusted the arm of flesh instead of God who gave him victory (Read 2 Chronicles 14:7,11-12; 15:2; 16:7). You are to rely on God and to have faith in Him. That’s when He can give you victory. Have you vowed to do something? Do well to do just that. King Asa vowed to serve God forever, but he missed it at the end. “…without understanding, COVENANTBREAKERS, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgement of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” (Romans 1:29-32). Lot’s wife had been obedient to God by following her husband, but she subsequently disobeyed God by looking back (Genesis 19:17, 26). She looked back to the things behind [e.g. pleasure etc], and turned to a pillar of salt. “Jesus said to him, No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back [to the things behind] is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62 AMP). Hebrews 10:29 depicts that God hates backsliding as He term it “shaming my son”, “trampling Jesus under foot”, “despising the Holy Spirit.” It is therefore evident that backsliding is dangerous indeed. (Read Hebrews 10:26-31). “See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.” (Hebrews 12:25). https://wetrainchristians./2016/12/03/the-turn-back/ Photo Credit: www.neloc.com.ng

Text: James 2:14-26. What else do we speak of The Christian faith but of love for the Author is love. A profession of faith is meaningless without good works i.e acts of love (see 1 John 4:8,16; James 2:17). The people of Antioch called the early disciples Christians because of what they saw in them. They reflected Christ. Christians should therefore show to the world who we are by good works (Acts 11:26; James 2:18b). Abraham showed faith by his work as he gave God his all (Genesis 22:12; James 2:21-23). We must show these good works towards God and man in love by demonstrating love to God in obeying Him and doing all you can to bring men to Him. We should also show God’s type of love to others by using all resources at our disposal— clothes, shoes, food, money, vehicle, time, skills etc— to meet the needs of others. In 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a, Apostle Paul describes true love. “Man should not consider his material possession his own, but as common to all, so as to share them without hesitation when others are in need.” ~Thomas Aquinas. We are to note that God’s type of love is kind to the unkind, to love our enemies (see Matthew 5:43-47). God loved us, even when we were yet His enemies (Romans 5:8 ). Do not repay evil with evil and pray for persecutors like Stephen (Acts 7:60). John the beloved showed that the perfect way we can love God is to obey His words (1 John 2:5). He further described God’s type of love as the PERFECT love in 1 John 4:17. This is the kind of love God expects from a Christian. “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” ~James 1:27. Do you know that the difference between a ‘Christian’ and a Moralist is the HOLY SPIRIT? Do you know that without the Holy Spirit, you can not move forward as a Christian? The difference between Christians, Muslims and others that do not believe in Christ is JESUS the son of the Living God (1 John 2:23). Thank God for the grace given to believe in Jesus Christ for it’s not by might nor by power but of God’s mercy (Lamentations 3:22). The question remains: “As believers in Christ, are you supposed to act, think or dress like the world? Or are you supposed to like what they love? Although you are IN the world, you are not OF the world. If you still dress, act, think or talk like them. Please, stop. Pray for the grace with faith. Just one difference affects the whole thing. Likewise, JUST ONE SIN CAN MAKE ONE TO LOSE HIS GLORY. Shalom! https://wetrainchristians./2015/06/07/just-one-difference/ |

Oftentimes, we know the glory of God through His works in our lives. We glorify and call Him great from what we see in Him and what He does. In Exodus 33:18-19, we see God's glory as His goodness. ¤His goodness gives deliverance (Exodus 18:9). ¤It gives victory (Nehemiah 9:24-25). ¤It provides (Psalm 68:10; Jeremiah 31:12) ¤It gives hope (Jeremiah 31:14,17). The third stanza of "Holy Lord God Almighty" says: "Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye made blind by sin, Thy glory may not see..." From this hymn, no man can see the glory of God when he is in sin (Read Ephesians 4:17-19). A man cannot see His glory when sin is "standing" between him and God. In other words, God cannot wrought great works in man if sin is present (See Isaiah 59:1-2 and Romans 6:1-2). "As you cannot see the beauty of an object in the dark. Likewise, you cannot see the glory of God in sin." Darkness will vanish anywhere there is light. Light will show forth the beauty of what is hidden by darkness. Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12) sent by God (John 6:38-40) to abolish every form of darkness (2 Timothy 1:10). This darkness could be sickness, attack, etc. We see the glory of God and know more about Him through Jesus (John 14:7a)--The miracles He did, His death and resurrection are all about God and His glory. It is the light in Jesus that will make you to see His glory and become a carrier of His glory. "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." ~John 8:12 (KJV) Only Jesus' followers can claim this light. Are you His true follower? Hold fast to your confession that He is your Lord and Saviour. He must be your Lord in everything. You must be obedient to His commandments. Follow Jesus today and have the light which is life. Shalom! Source: https://wetrainchristians./2016/11/12/the-glory-of-god/ |
There lies diverse definitions for the word "Success", but one remains encompassing. It is the "achievement of a goal". Success is what everybody desires. However, not everyone succeeds. Briefly, I will highlight some points responsible for this. 1. The lack of determination. Determination makes a person to focus on fulfilling the goal even when there are hurdles. Having the desire alone is useless. One needs dogged determination because the road to success is not an easy one. Therefore, desire without determination will lead to failure, the opposite of success. 2. Procrastination: The thief of time comes in. It is opportunities' natural assasin. We make use of wise words but we do not apply them. We postpone that which is needed to be done to another time, even when we do not know what we would face in the next minute, nor the next second. Most times, something that would hinder us from fulfilling the postponed task might come up. The moment you have something in mind to do, do it. 3. Laziness. Here is another enemy of success. Most times, people procrastinate because they are lazy. Success is the result of the GOOD WORKS YOU HAVE DONE. How would one get the positive results when he is lazy to work? You will only reap what you sow. (Even the Bible says "only a diligent man will stand before kings." Proverbs 22:29) In conclusion, do well to obey all the good commandments you are to observe. Obey God's rules. His rules are for good and the best. They are necessary for any man to succeed. Therefore, if man fails to obey Him, failure definitely knocks on the door. At a particular point in time, such person would not be able to move on without God. God is the giver of success but He often gives those who worth it. He gives grace to succeed in all ramifications (spiritually, etc) and continually. For optimum success, You need God, You need Jesus. Shalom!
