Generally referred to by most bookmakers as 'handicap betting' and is often abbreviated to EH in short hand. Not to be confused with Asian Handicaps (AH).

A whole number of points or goals is added to the outsider or subtracted from the favourite. The handicap bets are settled on the outcome of the event after adjusting for the handicaps.

If you choose to bet on the favourite, it will have to do better than it's handicap in order for you to win your bet. For example, if you bet on Chelsea (-1), they would have to win by at least a 2 goal margin for the handicap bet to win.

The main difference between European handicaps and their Asian counterparts is that they do NOT reduce a bet to 2 outcomes. A draw is still possible.

Example

Liverpool (-1)
Draw (-1)
Everton (+1)

The possible outcomes are:

Liverpool beats Everton by more than one goal: Liverpool (-1) wins.
Liverpool beats Everton by exactly one goal: Draw (-1) wins.
The game ends in a draw: Everton (+1) wins.
Everton beats Liverpool by one or more goals: Everton (+1) wins.
