Jay891: That depends. I don't know how widespread a practice it is in Nigeria, but I meant individuals who have investment operations, e. g., a private investment partnership or company or any structure that doesn't involve offering to or servicing the public and may not be under the purview of regulators because of its private nature. |

rationalmind: I hope it's not a case of "influential" shareholder(s) pushing for payment of special dividend or a case where management does not have sufficiently profitable ideas for the funds. If it's the latter, then it's fine, but could it indicate a weak outlook? Or maybe other capital sources will be adequate. |
Politics / Re: FG Replies Bill Gates' Comment On Buhari's Economic Plan by bobbyL(m): 10:18am On Mar 24, 2018 |
CoolAmbience: While I notice that you somewhat frequently defend the current government, I agree with you that most people seem to ascribe validity to Bill's statements because of his achievements. I don't think most of those commenting have gone through the ERGP. It surely has programmes for human capital development, however, it may not be adequate. In fact, both infrastructure and human capital development plans are likely inadequate to take Nigeria to where she needs to be. The question is whether the government has the focus and willpower to at least actively start doing - and doing well - what needs to be done. Technically, the government's response is not irrelevant, however, I think they should take a cue that human capital development needs to be given much more attention as that is what would sustain other areas of development. But this thread is funny though. An education in crowd psychology. 1 Like |

Investment / Any Private Money Managers Here?? by bobbyL(m): 9:57am On Feb 06, 2018 |
Any Private Investors here? I mean those that running private investment outfits. Preferably money management investing in traditional instruments like stocks, fixed income etc; or advisory services. Others are welcome too. How do you go about it in Nigeria? What are the legal and regulatory hurdles and which set up is most cost effective whilst being administratively efficient. if you have a one/two man shop, I would like to know how you've been able to manage it. And success stories too..... Please I will greatly appreciate the help. Thanks. |

cc: Lalasticlala, Statsocial The topic should be amended. Covenant University wins CFA Research Challenge, to represent Nigeria at global competition. It's highly commendable, heard good things from an attendee. 3 Likes 1 Share |
Career / Re: I Want To Quit My Job And Live On My Savings by bobbyL(m): 10:19am On Feb 05, 2018 |
sabanageorge: A part of me wishes your thread is in the sections and not on the front page. However, I may not have found it. Read your post on your saving and investing habit and it's great to see someone doing something I would like to keep doing and doing it well. I don't think I'm near 90% though. Trust me, enough patient wealth has been built that way. On your job, it really depends on you. I see you are a well informed investor. Maybe I'll do you a mail. Nigeria is a highly inflationary environment, so you need to have adequate capital and be able to generate high returns relative to inflation and - although captured under inflation - currency risk. 400k is not bad but I want to believe you compound your wealth. Compounding is really the magic of investing.. For example, say the 400k a month and 4.8m a year amounts to c. 15%, (don't forget that interest rates were relatively elevated and are just moderating, so it may even be unsustainable), that would mean a N32m capital. You have to be able to invest this, compound it and then be able to withdraw funds for living expenses. Compounding at 20% will give you N 1.2b after 20 years and N 47b after 40 (20% is not common in a global sense though). The main thing is that you are able to compound while drawing funds. If you could withdraw low single digits, it would be great, possibly 4% or less (hypothetical) . 400k a month at 4% per annum means you have N120m capital. Compound that at 15% and you have N1.96b and N32b after 20 and 40 years respectively. So, yes, you can quit, if you have a way or are capable of compounding well above inflation and withdrawing only a small percentage of returns for spending. Not only will you retain purchasing power but the amount you can withdraw can keep increasing year after year as well (if you can, you can keep the amount constant or increase it slightly to enable you compound even more). On another note, since this is tied to quitting your job, have you considered OPM since you have some investment knowledge. I have been considering this too and maybe we could get in touch (I don't have plenty money though). You can respond if you're okay with me contacting you. Cheers. 6 Likes |

Unwritten indeed are the days before us in the eyes of many. We, however, rest assured that the blankness is a tome borne of thoughts - thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give us an expected end. |

Can anyone knowledgeable about this clarify the law's position on rent payment by new tenants. Has there been a change, this was not indicated in the write up, only referred to payment by a sitting tenant. Also, any mainland agents or landlords here that strictly adhere to Lagos tenancy law? |

bigtt76: Thanks a lot. Now thinking of using at least two brokers. Maybe Morgan and another that has a fund management business. Investment one, ARM or another. At least I can get some change on spare cash if I put it in their money market funds. Makes moving cash easier. JIJO is a very sharp two-edged sword. I'm not sure I am suited to it, at least from my non-trading experience. I know say na wetin dey reign for here be dat. 1 Like |

chunkuli: Thanks a lot. There was a time I saw complaints of hidden charges, as well as poor customer service. They were also suspended at a point in time. for JIJO, won't that be a problem? I know their trading platform is directly linked to the NSE's trading engine but is there any other stockbroker linked in the same way? I don't really want to do JIJO but it is possible I want to exit shortly. I just don't want a broker that is prone to disappointing it's customers. If you use Morgan, please share your experience. And other people too. Please help. Thanks. |

bigtt76: Thank you. Yes it helps. I think Morgan Capital charges 0.25% but I came across some posts saying there are other hidden charges. I am not really a JIJO person. I don't intend to use signals or indicators per se. More of fundamentals, that's why I need a reliable broker that I can also use their reports. From what I have seen so far, I really like FSDH‘s analyst reports. Will check ARM's charges. Thanks again. |

bigtt76: Thanks a lot. What are their charges like, and their research reports? Would you recommend them? I think Morgan Capital has the lowest transactional costs in the industry but I have come across too many complaints. |
