PoliticsJapa: Resist Temptation To Abandon Nigeria, Fashola Tells Youths by Bobloco(op): 7:15pm On Nov 09, 2024
Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Power, Works and Housing, has asked Nigerian youths to stay back in the country rather than seeking green pasture abroad amid the economic hardship.

Fashola, who said youths must be able to do something better for themselves, noted that an end must be put to the mass exodus of the country.

The two-term Lagos governor spoke on Saturday at the combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of the Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo state.

Fashola, who admitted that things were tough in Nigeria, advised young people in the country to push their way through to get into a place of decision-making.

“Why did Mrs Folorunso Alakija not run away? Why did Chief Tunde Afolabi who have contributed to Nigeria not run away ? Why are they still here? Times were equally tough in their younger days that propelled the popular musician Dr Victor Olaiya’s song Ilu le o, ko s’owo l’ode…. (sics) in the 60s.

“The youths have become leaders in the Nigerian household, and therefore, they must embrace that responsibility. Do leaders also run away when it is difficult? There were tough times when Chief Ade-Ojo was at the University of Nigeria (UNN), but Ade-Ojo didn’t leave. If he had left, there would be no Elizade University.” he said.

On his part. Michael Ade-Ojo, founder of the University, said he was fulfilled with the vision of the institution producing world-class graduates and supporting the education system in the country.

Ade-Ojo explained that despite the lack of financial returns on his investments in the university, he was happy that institution’s graduates are competing globally.

“I have been intentionally sacrificial with my investment in the university. It, therefore, gladdens my heart to see the seeds I sowed to humanity, already bringing forth useful fruits. My vision has always been to provide world-class education right here in Nigeria, and while there’s still work to be done, I am pleased with how far we have come,” he said.

He urged the university to always place greater emphasis on research and entrepreneurship training, noting that it will equip students to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Prof. Kayode Ijadunola, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the institution was committed to producing well-rounded graduates who would be equipped with skills to solve the nation’s numerous economic and technology challenges.

“With new developments, a growing research portfolio, and strong community ties, Elizade University is poised to continue its upward trajectory in Nigerian higher education,”
Ijadunola added

PoliticsMinimum Wage: Workers Decry Hardship As Seven States Delay Approval by Bobloco(op): 12:40pm On Nov 09, 2024
No fewer than seven states and the Federal Capital Territory have failed to approve the minimum wage expected to commence in October this year.

This is as 25 states have commenced payment or made a pronouncement on the amount to pay as the minimum wage.

The states that have yet to approve a particular minimum wage amount are Zamfara, Sokoto, Osun, Cross River, Imo, Plateau, Taraba, and the FCT.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that paying the N70,000 minimum wage may take a long time in Zamfara, as the state just began paying the old N30,000 minimum wage.

Recall that the N30,000 minimum wage took effect in April 2019, but Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State commenced the payment to the civil servants in June this year.

The state has yet to make any statement on the N70,000 minimum wage as of the time of filing this report.

Also, Sokoto State has yet to commence payment of the minimum wage despite Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s promise that his administration would be among the first states to do so.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, had declared that his administration would pay the minimum wage, but the state has yet to approve any amount or commence payment of the minimum wage.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH on Thursday, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in the state, Bimbo Fasasi, said the state was about to finalise the implementation process.

Fasasi, a member of the Labour/Osun State Government negotiation committee on the new minimum wage, said, “We are getting there, we are at the stage of comparing tables and exchanging tables between us. I’m confident we will soon have a meeting point and we will be able to make formal announcements and implementation will most definitely follow immediately.”

Cross River State has also not approved the N70,000 minimum wage.

On May 1, 2024, Governor Bassey Otu of the state announced N40,000 as a new minimum wage for civil servants before the national minimum wage.

TUC Chairman in the state, Monday Ogbodum, said labour unions were still negotiating the new minimum wage with the state government.

The minimum wage is also yet to take effect in Imo State, though Governor Hope Uzodimma assured workers that his government was committed to its implementation.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the state government and labour were already discussing the minimum wage.

The Vice Chairman of TUC in the state, Charles Amaru, disclosed that there was no agreement on payment by the state government yet.

He said, “The organised labour is still discussing with the state government on the template for payment. The discussion is prone to having fruitful outcomes and the government has said that everyone will be comfortable with the amount that will be paid.”

There has been grave silence on the minimum wage in Plateau State, just as the Taraba State Government has yet to commence the payment of the N70,000.

On September 5, 2024, Governor Agbu Kefas of the state said he was prepared to pay the new national minimum wage, adding that the Head of Service and the labour were already discussing the implementation.

The FCT has yet to speak on the minimum wage implementation as of the time of filing this report.

However, workers across the country have continued to lament the lingering economic hardship, noting that N70,000 is no longer enough for them.

The workers who spoke randomly with Saturday PUNCH said the fuel and electricity tariff hikes, inflation, and high cost of living have seriously reduced the value of the N70,000.

A staff member of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Abuja, who pleaded anonymity stated that the labour leaders made a mistake by accepting the N70,000 minimum wage without considering the economic reality.

“We were not expecting our leaders to accept the N70,000 as minimum wage because the price of foodstuffs, fuel, electricity tariffs, and fuels continue to go up.

“The amount is not enough for us at all. The living standard in Abuja is high and it is a reality that we cannot survive on N70,000 every month.”

Also, a civil servant at Ayedire Local Government, Osun State, said the N70,000 was not proportionate to the economic hardship, adding that the minimum wage couldn’t feed a family for two weeks.

He queried, “What is the quality and quantity of the foodstuffs to buy with N70,000? How long will it take to exhaust the minimum wage in the face of fuel hikes and inflation? Life is not easy for us.”

Recall that the organised labour said they accepted the N70,000 minimum wage because of President Bola Tinubu’s promise not to increase fuel prices.

But the fuel price was increased in September and has continued to increase since then, a development that made the Nigeria Labour Congress declare that the president betrayed the labour unions.

The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, on September 20, said Tinubu betrayed the organised labour, using fuel as bait.

Ajaero noted that the cost of petrol has undermined the benefits of the N70,000 national minimum wage, urging the government to urgently address the pressing issues of hunger, poverty, and frustration affecting Nigerians.

Ajaero recounted discussions with Tinubu before the acceptance of the N70,000 minimum wage, stating that during negotiations, the president offered the option of accepting the N70,000 wage without further increase in fuel prices.

HealthRe: The Return Of Kwashiorkor by Bobloco: 11:15am On Nov 09, 2024
treesun:
The deadly kwashiorkor disease that was so much associated with the Biafra war has made a return to peacetime Nigeria.

It was not a pretty sight seeing malnourished children with distended stomachs, nylon-like skins and dopey eyes during that evil war.

I sold wristwatch, did okada, keke work; now I have fame but no money — Angel Babaorobo, Skit Maker0:07 / 1:00

The belief was that kwashiorkor had gone for good with Biafra.

My shock knew no bounds when I read in the Nigerian Tribune of Saturday, October 26, 2024 that kwashiorkor is back in town.

The revelation emanated from Dr Foluso Balogun, a paediatrician at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan that “for the first time in many years, children with kwashiorkor are seen in this part of the country.”

According to the report, “Kwashiorkor is a severe form of protein malnutrition. Children who eat diets low in caloric and protein are most likely to suffer from kwashiorkor. Infants and children are typically affected, usually from the time of weaning until age five. The illness is prevalent in areas of the world that are impoverished and have extremely high rates of starvation.”

Just as I was wailing about the return of kwashiorkor, the news broke of the arraignment in open court of dozens of malnourished children detained for three months for protesting against the hunger regime of the government.

Four of the kid detainees fainted in court to the astonishment of the whole wide world.

Members of the Hallelujah Chorus of the incumbent government croaked that the fainting kids were only play-acting!

Nigeria’s image was damaged all over the world for detaining and charging hungry children with treason. The internet and social media went into overdrive to put Nigeria to global shame and odium.

Minors often used to cause havoc in the North — Pogu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could not but order the immediate release of the detained minors and the stoppage of their trial.

But the harm had been done, and the Nigerian regime must perforce suffer the adverse consequences therefrom.

There is a connection between children suffering from kwashiorkor and detained malnourished minors being charged with treason.

It all boils down to man’s inhumanity in the dispensation of totalitarian power in the name of democracy.

All the concern of the powers-that-be is devoted to keeping power instead of fighting issues like hunger and starvation.

The starving ones are left with the only option of protests to gain any attention from the uncaring government.

Given that the unpopular regime is on edge all the time, any form of protest is deemed as high treason.

It is ever so benumbing seeing agents of the government making believe that all is well with a country that is in disarray and completely broken.

Families are so broke and can no longer feed, yet the politicians are talking of winning elections and re-elections.

The politicians have hopelessly divided Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines such that they can get away with murder.

And the return of kwashiorkor spells murder, an apt metaphor for the Nigeria of the here and now.

The disease knows no ethnic group as it malevolently launches its ferocious attack across all the geo-political zones.

Just as the parochial politicians are claiming “it is my turn”, kwashiorkor is countering with its own charge of “it’s my turn”.

The poor folks suffering from malnutrition and kwashiorkor are doomed to die sad, painful deaths before the uncaring eyes of gluttonous politicians.

A short history of the coming of kwashiorkor can be traced back to when the then opposition politicians marched on the streets against then President Goodluck Jonathan for removing petrol subsidy.

The opposition gained power through General Muhammadu Buhari thereafter, and literally everything went downhill for the country.

Even the sidekick opposition star Bola Ahmed Tinubu who took over power from Buhari made bold to stress that he inherited a bankrupt country from the Katsina man from Daura.

The first statement out of the mouth of Tinubu as president was: “Petrol subsidy is gone.”

It’s cool by me to recall that Tinubu had protested when then President Jonathan put the price of petrol at N140, but now under his watch petrol is a princely N1400!

Even so, the Bulaba Hallelujah Chorus cannot stop praising their president for being strong in taking a bold step!

It’s just like the title character Rip Van Winkle in the short story by Washington Irving who woke up after 20 years of sleep!

You would expect a president who claimed to have inherited bankruptcy from his predecessor to be frugal in his dealings.

It was spellbinding when ideas emanated about buying a presidential yacht – and a new presidential jet landed on the presidential tarmac.

The lodgings of the vice-president gulped all of N21 billion, and he is now calling for a new vice-presidential jet too.

There was a climate change conference in super-duper Dubai where Nigeria sent a contingent of 500-odd dignitaries.

A tear for a broke native land!

A colossal coastal road contract had to be awarded in a jiffy to a buddy without any adherence to bidding or even environmental checks.

The judiciary has been cast in the lapdog jacket of “go to court” while the legislature is under the thumb of power.

The religious angle was covered with a hefty N96 billion Hajj subsidy.

Corruption is now the rule rather than the exception, just as the old party chairman advised: “Join the ruling party and all your sins will be forgiven!”

Unfortunately the one sin that cannot be forgiven is the kwashiorkor ravaging the Nigerian streets today.

Let’s raise a toast to the return of kwashiorkor to Nigeria!
