Federal Government officials have unwittingly sowed seeds of confusion as to whether or not the Bola Tinubu regime is planning a ban on importation of photovoltaic panels any time soon. Self-impressed with what the experts in his ministry are doing, the Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, recently claimed the government was willing to support domestic manufacturers of solar panels, including the restriction of their imports. He said that the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, and other private outfits are producing solar panels, and the Federal Government is ready to protect them through import restrictions. Following the outrage that trailed this assertion, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency OF Nigeria, REAN, Abba Aliyu, countered Nnaji’s claims at a recent roundtable in Lagos, asserting that Nigeria’s capacity in the production of renewable equipment, such as solar panels, was still too low to warrant the consideration of the ban of imported solar panels. We agree with Aliyu that Nigeria is nowhere near the need to ban solar panel imports. With just about 6,000 megawatts generation capacity from its national power grid serving a population of about 225 million people, Nigeria is one of the most underserved countries in terms of electric power. For most Nigerians, the situation is worsened by the sky-high hike of the cost of energy (petrol, diesel and electricity power units supplied by the Distribution Companies, DISCOs, in the past two years. Though the Federal Government has facilitated the devolution of electricity generation and distribution powers to the states, most state governments’ intentions to invest in power grids are still at the drawing board level. Many financially capable Nigerians have turned to the novel use of solar power to protect themselves from the oppression of power cuts and instability. However, solar power is still very expensive despite its growing popularity. Not many people are able to afford the huge amounts to acquire it. We cannot depend on whatever NASENI and other government agencies might be doing. NASENI has been with us since 1992 when it was established. So has the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. Yet, these and other high sounding federal agencies live large only on propaganda, with very little impact outside the close circuits of government. If Nigerians are to wait for, or depend on, them for our industrial and technological development, we may never develop. We call for the liberalisation of quality solar panel imports, while efforts are made to attract more investments for their domestic manufacturing. We also urge governments at all levels to encourage banks to provide loan facilities for the acquisition of solar energy by willing and able individuals. Overzealous officials should stop confusing the public. https://www.vanguardngr.com/category/editorial/ |

Calls for the removal of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, have intensified as a federal lawmaker and a youth group declared him unfit to manage the country’s worsening security crisis. The Afenifere Youth Vanguard for Peace in Nigeria, AYPN, on Sunday, backed Hon Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, who last week issued a scathing criticism of the minister on the floor of the House. Gagdi had raised the alarm over recent terrorist attacks, particularly in Borno State, where insurgents reportedly overran military bases and carted away 40 tanks and military platforms, calling into question the nation’s defence capacity. Describing the lawmaker’s statement as “a clear and courageous vote of no confidence,” the AYPN said Badaru lacks the competence and commitment required to secure the country. “There is no excuse for what is happening under Badaru’s watch. The Defence Ministry is not a reward for political loyalty; it is the backbone of Nigeria’s safety, and it has collapsed under him,” said Olatunji Fadare, president of the AYPN. The group alleged that since his appointment, the minister has focused more on consolidating personal business interests than addressing security threats, describing him as “a contractor in a camouflage ministry.” They further claimed that defence contracts are being awarded based on political alignment, which they say has contributed to equipment shortages and intelligence failures in military operations. “Badaru is too old, too out-of-touch, and too distracted by ambition to lead a wartime ministry. If we were at peace, maybe he could coast. But we are fighting for our survival — and he’s not even present,” Fadare said. The group also accused the minister of ethnic bias, alleging that recruitment, procurement, and strategic decisions within the ministry now heavily favour individuals aligned with Badaru’s alleged 2027 presidential ambition. They criticised the ministry’s response to reports from governors and lawmakers, citing Gagdi’s claim that warnings from the Borno State governor were dismissed. “When people on the ground raise alarm and the minister responds with propaganda, it shows the ministry has lost its moral compass,” Fadare said. The group called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently restructure the country’s defence architecture, beginning with Badaru’s removal. “This is not about politics; it’s about survival. The President must show Nigerians that national interest comes before personal loyalty,” the statement added. AYPN warned that failure to act decisively could lead to further loss of public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/11/pressure-mounts-on-tinubu-to-sack-defence-minister-badaru-over-rising-insecurity/ |

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said there are signs that the All Progressives Congress (APC) may soon split, with its National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and others possibly defecting to the PDP. The former governor made this disclosure while delivering his keynote address at the PDP congress held at Aminu Kano Triangle in Jigawa. He said, “I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions, having accommodated people with different mindsets. “I said it, and I repeat: within six months, all those who defected to the APC will come back, and the PDP will rise with full force to wrest power in 2027.” The ex-foreign affairs minister urged party members not to be discouraged by the defection of some elected officials under the PDP to the ruling APC, attributing their actions to fear of intimidation and harassment. Lamido’s criticism of the APC comes amid growing concerns over the wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling party. He further emphasised that the PDP has the confidence and strength to defeat its opponents in the 2027 elections. Lamido’s remarks also touched on broader issues of governance and leadership in Nigeria, which he believes are being undermined by the APC. “Nigeria is blessed, but the leaders are always the problem,” he said. He, therefore, warned the government in power to stop intimidating the opposition, stating that such actions could lead to further instability. Meanwhile, the newly elected chairman of the PDP in Jigawa State, Honourable Ibrahim Babandi Gumel, called for unity among party members ahead of the 2027 elections. https://tribuneonlineng.com/apcll-split-soon-ganduje-others-will-defect-to-pdp-sule-lamido/#google_vignette |

BENIN CITY – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns over the high level of institutional weaknesses, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and endemic grand corruption in Nigeria, which it claims continue to undermine governance at all levels. The union expressed its concerns during the 23rd National Delegates Conference of ASUU held at the University of Benin main campus in Ugbowo, Benin City, where a new leadership for the union is expected to emerge. The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, lamented the lack of inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability in governance. He also highlighted worsening existential conditions resulting from the government’s adoption of neoliberal economic policies, which he claimed are breeding apathy, cynicism, self-help, criminality, and mass migration (japa) among the youth. Osodeke stated that despite Nigeria’s vast oil reserves, agricultural potential, and energetic youth population, the nation still battles high unemployment, inflation, a depreciating currency, and rising poverty rates. “With its vast oil reserves, agricultural potentials, and energetic young population, the country should be a leader in global development. Instead, it wrestles with high unemployment, inflation, a depreciating currency, and rising poverty rates,” Osodeke remarked. He criticized the government’s policies for stifling the informal economy, which sustains millions but receives little attention in national policy. When policies are made, they tend to hinder growth and discourage patriotic operators in informal sectors who are struggling to survive amid multiple taxes, energy costs, and communication charges. Osodeke acknowledged that attempts at economic diversification, particularly in technology and agriculture, show promise. However, he noted that these initiatives require bold, long-term commitment and substantial infrastructure development. He questioned the sincerity of government reforms, describing the ongoing brain drain—with professionals and young graduates seeking better opportunities abroad—as an indictment of the state of national affairs and evidence of ill-informed and inappropriate reform policies. “The massive brain drain, as professionals and young graduates seek better opportunities abroad, is a direct indictment of the state of national affairs and the unmitigated failure of the ill-informed and inappropriate reforms,” he added. The ASUU President also expressed concern over worsening insecurity across the country. He highlighted various security challenges, including: Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East Banditry in the North-West Kidnapping in the South Secessionist agitations in the South-East Jungle justice incidents across regions He emphasized that no region in Nigeria is immune to these crises, calling for urgent and effective interventions. Also speaking at the event, Professor Atahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and former President of ASUU, stressed that education is a critical institution for nation-building. “The struggles to improve education, expand educational opportunities, provide quality education, and protect the interest of workers in academic institutions are fundamentally struggles for nation-building,” Jega asserted. He urged the Federal Government to prioritize education reforms and address the root causes of corruption and inefficiencies that have stifled progress. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/05/ASUU-to-fg-address-corruption-institutional-weakness/ |
