Some students of the National Open University of Nigeria have spoken out against plans by some lecturers and students to form unions in the school. The Management of the institution has been at loggerheads with students and staff over the the ban placed on union activities but some students have insisted on forming a union. However, some students who spoke to our reporter raised their objections to the formation of union in the school, saying agitation by union members often leads to strike, which will impede on smooth running of the institution. A student, Yahaya Suleiman, said he supports the management’s decision because he would not want the university to be dragged into what his colleagues in conventional higher institutions have to grapple with often in the course of running their programme. Suleiman said: “Contrary to the proliferation of students and staff in conventional universities where the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-academic Staff Union of Universities, the National Association of Nigerian Students, state chapters of students association and local government and villages of students associations are part of university education, NOUN is an open university where mature Nigerians who are engaged in daily jobs are admitted to learn and may not have time for associations.” Another student, Emmanuel Ajayi, who studies Security Studies at the Ilorin Study Centre, said: “This has made the institution to be unaffected by strikes such as the last ASUU strike which lasted for eight months that crippled academic activities in most public owned universities.” It would be recalled that at the 14th matriculation of the school, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, had said “the formation of students and staff unions and associations are not permitted in NOUN. This is due to the diverge nature of our students and staff in terms of age, class, status, professional callings as well as belonging to many existing unions and associations”. Another reason adduced for the restriction is for speedy growth. More so, the Act which established the university, prohibits any form of union either among staff or students. “NOUN students have always and will continue to be immune to any form of strike,” reiterated the NOUN boss. Meanwhile, some staff at the Wuse 2 Study Centre in abuja, who spoke with journalists, also objected to union activities, saying it was capable of destroying the achievements recorded so far by the present administration in terms of speedy completion of studies as at when due, innovations in ICT, expansion on courses accreditation and some other achievements of the present VC. They accused their colleagues and some students of trying to use the guise of unionism to bully and blackmail the VC. Alechenu Awodi, a Psychology Student at the Otukpo Study Centre in Benue State, while speaking in support of the ban, equally want some genuine improvements like distribution of course materials at the point of registration. Maryann Obi, an English Language student student at the Enugu Study Centre, said she was excited about the news that she would participate in the forth coming National Youth Service Corps programme, which is the joy of every University graduate in Nigeria. http://nounites.com/forums/topic/noun-students-kick-against-unionism/

Prof. Vincent Tenebe, the Vice Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), on Friday said the institution was targeting more students’ access to university with its online degrees. Tenebe said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Presentation of the NOUN project on Open Educational Resource (OERs) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)’’. According to him, while OERs are educational materials made available freely for reuse, revision, remixing and redistribution, MOOCs are short courses aimed at unlimited participation and open access through the web. NOUN, being a forerunner in Open and Distance Learning, is keying into this because we know we have the capacity to contribute OERs and MOOCs to the global community. While its mission seeks to provide cost-effective, flexible learning which adds life-long value to quality education for all who seek knowledge, it also aims to make higher education more accessible to people. The embrace of OER is in line with the vision and mission of NOUN to provide highly accessible and enhanced quality education. This is education that is anchored on social justice, equity, equality and national cohesion through a comprehensive reach that transcends all barriers taking learning away from the confines of structured classrooms and printed materials.’’ Dr Jane-Frances Agbu, the Head, OER Unit, said NOUN took the giant leap to key into the OER movement and openly license its body of course wares in order to ultimately unlock knowledge for common good. Agbu said that it was a model for delivering learning content online to people’s door steps, especially to any person who wanted to take a course with no limit on attendance. She said that NOUN embraced OER and MOOCs concepts to serve as a major knowledge production and distribution hub for higher education in Africa and beyond for educational transformation. She said that the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and NOUN collaborated to explore the possibilities of deploying various online resources to digitalise academic learning with huge potential to out-of-school people. Mr Abel Caine, the UNESCO Programme Specialist for OER told NAN that OER and MMOCs would enable people to get educational materials free of such issues as plagiarism and other technical input. He said that this allowed for OER materials to be copied, distributed, edited, remixed and built upon by anybody within the boundaries of copyright law. He explained that it would afford an independent learner who had access to internet to gain access to materials from some of the best universities in the world and help promote informal learning where credentials are not needed. He urged the thousands of young Nigerians who were unable to secure admission into the nation’s conventional universities to look in the direction provided by the OER and MOOCs to enhance their learning.
