Politics / Every Village Benefited From Tradermoni, Marketmoni, N-power - Buhari by Bodmas94(m): 9:23am On Oct 01, 2022
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday, said in his quest to develop the country’s economy, he facilitated the National Social Investment Programme that provided N-Power, TraderMoni, MarketMoni and other subsidized loans to reduce poverty and create employment opportunities among Nigerians.

Buhari stated this in what would be his last Independence Day address to the country on October 1, 2022.

According to him, “The Federal Government is already expanding port operations to ensure that they provide opportunities for the growth of the Nigerian economy.

“We have also continued to accelerate our infrastructure development through serviceable and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow & increased revenue generation by expanding the tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

The President also noted that no village in the country was left behind in the regime’s Social Investment Programmes such as N-Power, trader-moni, market moni, etc.

“I am pleased to inform my fellow citizens that besides our emphasis on infrastructural development with its attendant opportunities for job creation, employment generation and subsequent poverty reduction, our focused intervention directly to Nigerians through the National Social Investment Programme is also yielding benefits.

“All the aforementioned programmes along with various interventions by the National Social Investment programme, direct support to victims of flooding and other forms of disasters have provided succour to the affected Nigerians,” Buhari said.

Politics / 2023 Elections: No Party Allowed To Solicit Funds Outside Nigeria – INEC by Bodmas94(m): 9:14am On Oct 01, 2022
This was declared by Festus Okoye, the body’s National Commissioner, adding that no party was allowed to collect money from unknown sources.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned all political parties from seeking funding from foreign countries as the 2023 general elections approach.

This was declared by Festus Okoye, the body’s National Commissioner, on Friday while appearing on a Channels TV programme, adding that no party was allowed to collect money from unknown sources.

He explained that such was contrary to Section 225 of the Nigerian constitution which according to him, states that “no registered political party in Nigeria shall possess any funds outside the country,”

He further insisted that if such funds are remitted to the political party from outside Nigeria, “that particular political party has a constitutional and legal obligation to turn in such funds to INEC within a period of 21 days from the date of receipt of such funds.”

This is coming amid speculations that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, solicited financial assistance from some foreigners to fund his campaign.

The party had, however, debunked the allegations, saying it never begged anyone for funds.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Oluwafemi, gave this clarification in a telephone interview with Vanguard.

He dismissed concerns that the party was seeking foreign finance for its activities as part of the theatrics of political opponents who were terrified by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate's rising stature.

Oluwafemi said, “It is ridiculous that our political opponents have descended to a new low to insinuate that our party is oblivious of electoral laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, neither our party nor our candidate is seeking for foreign funding for any of our activities.”

Politics / Douye Diri Queries Bayelsa Population Figure, Says Nigeria Lacks Adequate Census by Bodmas94(m): 7:57pm On Sep 28, 2022
The governor stressed that the state had grown beyond the current structure of eight local government areas.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has faulted the population figures attributed to the state by the National Population Commission (NPC), saying they were grossly underestimated.

The governor also said the current population data for the country was inaccurate and called on the NPC to correct past census figures in the 2023 national census exercise.

Governor Diri stated this on Tuesday during the Stakeholders Summit on the 2023 Population and Housing Census held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Government House, Yenagoa.

Buttressing his claim, the governor stressed that the state had grown beyond the current structure of eight local government areas, noting that, for instance, the projected population of Yenagoa, the state capital, points to the fact that the state’s population was misrepresented.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that such faulty census figures were responsible for the under-representation of Bayelsa in the House of Representatives with only five members.

Senator Diri emphasised that due to its tremendous growth and contribution to the national economy as a result of its oil resources, Bayelsa deserved more federal presence.

He said: “By the 2006 census figures, Bayelsa had a population of 1,704,515. That figure was not correct. But we are hopeful that the next exercise will give a more reliable and acceptable figure.

“Our government is convinced that the National Population Commission has the commitment and capacity to deliver to Nigerians and, indeed, to Bayelsa State very credible, reliable, valid and acceptable population figures.

“As a government, we are deeply concerned that Bayelsa has grown beyond the current structure of eight local governments. Clearly, we are under-represented in the House of Representatives with only five members. And the current projected population of Yenagoa points to these facts. Due to our exponential growth and contributions to the national economy from our oil resources, we deserve more federal presence.”

Diri said the NPC should realise that an accurate census is critical to the nation’s democracy and economy because it underpins fair representation in government and enables those in authority to provide appropriate funding for healthcare, schools, roads and other critical infrastructure.

The governor described population figures as one of the basic parameters in the sharing of revenue, particularly in Nigeria.

In her address, the Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission in charge of Bayelsa State, Mrs Gloria Izonfuo, hinted that the 2023 census would be fully digitalised in line with United Nations principles and recommendations for the 2020 Round of Population and Housing Censuses.

Politics / Remove Petrol Subsidy, Implement PIA, LCCI Tells FG by Bodmas94(m): 8:26am On Sep 27, 2022
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has advised the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidies and implement the Petroleum Industry Act religiously.

The advice was given by Vice President, LCCI, Gabriel Idahosa, while representing the President, LCCI, Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole, at the 60th-anniversary celebration of the Oil Producers Trade Section held in Lagos recently.

According to him, fuel subsidies should be removed because it was no longer sustainable, noting that its removal was fundamental to the growth of the downstream sector.

“The Chamber, noting the critical position occupied by the oil and gas sector, has consistently advocated for the creation of a conducive business environment where the operators can thrive. The menace of oil theft, pipeline vandalism, low investment and insecurity have all contributed to the woes recorded in this all-important sector. We expect the government to do more in fixing these issues knowing the proportion of the revenue contributed by this sector.

The Executive Director, OPTs, Bunmi Toyonbo, said the group still had “abiding faith” in Nigeria and noted the boundless growth of the country given the enabling environment.

Chairman, OPTs, Dr. Uduimo Itsueli, said the group had evolved to become partners with Nigeria in the development of a sector that was key to the nation’s economic growth.

According to him, OPTS member-companies accounted for about 90 per cent of Nigeria oil production and contributed significantly to the domestic and export gas production and supply.

“Over the last decade, OPTS member companies accounted for 40-60 per cent of government revenue and 85-95 per cent of export earnings. OPTS member companies are also proud to have paid tens of billions of dollars in taxes, levies, royalties, rents, and license fees to the Nigerian government.

“Through direct and indirect employment of people, local contractors, and service providers, OPTS member companies have continued to provide significant means of livelihoods to Nigerians.”

Politics / Reno Omokri Picks Holes In Governor Wike’s Media Chat, Lists 10 Fallacies by Bodmas94(m): 7:46pm On Sep 23, 2022
A chieftain of opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, Reno Omokri has punctured some claims and allegations Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State made against the embattled National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

The Nigerian author also debunked other allegations made against the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.

Omokri raised 10 issues in a reaction to Wike's claims and allegations, which he described as "fallacies from Wike’s media chat on the artificial PDP crisis," said only the constitution of the party should determine the fate of the Senator Ayu, and not any other consideration.

He said, "the Governor of Rivers state, and an esteemed member of our party, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike addressed the press on current issues within our party, and in the encounter he made some utterances which are fallacious.

"I believe he did not lie. It may just be a case that, because of the task of running a very successful state, like Rivers, his memory may have failed him. So I have written the below to refresh his memory."

While he maintained that embattled National Chairman, Senator Ayu, never promised to resign if a Northern Presidential candidate is elected, reminded Wike that Ayu had rather openly said "on video that he would resign if the PDP asked him to."

Omokri then queried, "Since the PDP NEC passed a vote of confidence in him, why should he resign?"

Among the 10 fallacies he claimed Wike made in his media chat were that; the PDP did not jettison zoning in favour of the North adding that zoning was jettisoned in favour of the South. "The last PDP President is from the South. By virtue of the party’s Constitution and tradition, the next President should come from the North.

"If Wike has evidence that the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, is not a trustworthy character, he should provide such to the police and other law enforcement agencies."

The Rivers State governor, had earlier in his media briefing, alleged the Ayu manipulated the process of the party's presidential primary/national convention in favour of Atiku, claiming that he called several aspirants to withdraw for Atiku.

But Omokri faulted the assertion adding that PDP presidential primaries were not flawed. "They were transparent and watched live on TV by Nigerians. A winner emerged. Many also did not win. Saraki, Tambuwal, Mohammed, Hayatudeen, Dele Momodu, Anyim, Fayose, Emmanuel, Momodu and others have not complained of any untoward happenings."

On other issues, he said "If the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, convened any illegal meetings in the house of retired generals, then proof of that should be tendered by the one making the allegations.

"How can a man who almost single handedly installed the last two PDP chairmen and many members of the NEC call the same party “arrogant”? If an engineer builds a house and calls it ugly, what is he inevitably saying about himself?

"Wike says Waziri Atiku is surrounding himself with people without much political value, why is he resisting joining the PCC. We need Wike because he obviously has much political value."

Omokri, however, noted that no member of the party was more important but every member of the party was important.

"The Peoples Democratic Party has a NEC. The NEC can discipline any member according to the Constitution of the party. Every member of the party is a vital picture, but no member is the big picture.

"The PDP Constitution should determine the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu."

Foreign Affairs / China’s Former Vice Minister Of Security Sentenced To Life For Accepting $92m by Bodmas94(m): 7:25pm On Sep 23, 2022
People's Court in the city of Changchun in Jilin province has hit a former top security official, Sun Lijun with a suspended death sentence for bribery and other crimes.

But the death sentence of Sun Lijun, a former vice minister of public security, will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years, according to the court statement.

Sun, 53 was found guilty of corruption, manipulating the stock market and illegally owning two firearms. Sun has been deprived of political rights for life while all his personal property has been confiscated.

According to Rthk, Sun was found to have abused his power in a number of influential positions between 2001 and 2020. He pleaded guilty in July to accepting more than 646 million yuan in bribes.

Mr Sun was also deprived of his political rights for life, and all his personal assets were confiscated, said the Intermediate People’s Court of Changchun in northeast China’s Jilin Province.

The court established that Sun received money and valuables totalling more than ¥646 million yuan ($92.39 million) by taking advantage of various positions he held between 2001 and April 2020.

Sun was found to have manipulated stock trading in the first half of 2018, helping some other people avoid a loss of ¥145 million and illegally possessed two guns, the court added.

The sum of bribes Mr Sun had taken was especially huge, and his crimes caused a heavy loss to the interests of the state and people, said the court.

It added that the circumstance of his crime in manipulating the stock market was particularly serious and that illegally possessing firearms was serious.

The court said Mr Sun was granted a lenient sentence, considering that he had provided investigators with clues to other major cases, contributing to a major meritorious service for the investigation.

It explained that he had also confessed to all of his crimes, including some acts of bribe-taking that investigators were not initially aware of. It added that he had shown repentance and cooperated in returning his illegal gains.

After the two-year reprieve for his death sentence, Mr Sun’s sentence can be commuted to life in prison in accordance with the law, but no further reduction or parole would be given to him, the court said.

Former justice minister Fu Zhenghua received similar penalties on Thursday. He was said to be part of Sun's "political gang”.

I had to do my own findings too as your question puzzled me too. I realised that the company was just set up for the purpose of winning this bid when the talk of 5G was raising concerns during lock down last year.

Another question, going by the kinds of businesses that the owner run, how was the owner able to raise over a 100 billion naira for the bid?

I had to even do a Google map check on the address of the company. I found that the address is not actively being used by any company.

On the cac portal, you will discover that mafab is a family business... The same phone number was left for all the directors (the husband, daughter and wife I guess) and the same address.

I believe mafab is a front/proxy for some people who don't want their involvement to be known to the public. I mean the parent company is not even an oil company that can raise such a huge sum of money. Some bank owners/directors, politicians may be involved in this deal and I believe the government are in on it. More investigations need to be done.

My concern now is that the company may not be able to efficiently deploy the 3G as I'm afraid they lack the experience and expertise. I think their aim is to get the licence and then sell to other stakeholders at a profit (that's the kind of investment the abovementioned persons get involved in after all). The company's (mafab) website is even down... If they can't keep their website alive, how are they going to manage our 3G well?

Enough said for now.

Politics / Just In: Ogun State Attorney-general: Why I Resigned by Bodmas94(m): 10:57pm On Nov 15, 2021
The Ogun State Attorney-General, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran, has issued a press statement as to his reason for resigning from the Ogun State Executive cabinet.

Kindly find below his press statement:

"My attention has been drawn to some online news publications purporting to provide reasons for my resignation from the Ogun State Government as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

While it is true that on 8 November 2021, I formally notified His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, the Governor of the State, of my decision to resign from the cabinet, I must state that contrary to the online news publications, my reasons for resigning are purely personal. I am not aware of any “massive corruption” in the Administration and I am indeed very proud of what we have been able to achieve in the administration of justice over the past two years, including:

· Improved accessibility of justice for the average citizen through the Ogun Public Interest Law Partnership which matches indigent clients with pro bono lawyers;

· Protection of the rights of suspects in detention through regular inspections by duty solicitors engaged under the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme;

· Use of technology to monitor the plight of pre-trial detainees with the Corrections Information Management System and Justice Clock;

· Gradual introduction of forensics into policing;
· Introduction of the Case Management and Scheduling System in conjunction with the Ogun State Judiciary;

· And many other reform initiatives in the justice sector.

I want to assure His Excellency, the Governor and all my colleagues in the Executive Council of the State of my continued support. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such an amazing group of administrators, technocrats and experts in various fields of endeavour. I have learnt a lot from you all and pray that God will continue to use you to improve on the lives of the good people of Ogun State. "

Politics / Declare IPOB A Terrorist Organisation, American Don Tells Biden by Bodmas94(m): 10:06am On Oct 21, 2021
There seems to be a string of compounding woes for the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu is currently in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) following his arrest in Kenya in June.

However, his ongoing treason trial does not seem to be the end of his travails as international forces have now joined demands for the proscription of his group.

The Federal Government had declared IPOB a terrorist organisation in 2017.

Ivan Sheehan, an American academic who is the executive director of the school of public and international affairs at the University of Baltimore, in a piece published in The Washington Times, gave reasons why IPOB should be designated as a terrorist group by the US.

Sheehan said the establishment of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) by IPOB signalled the end of the group’s “pretenses of being a peaceful movement”.

He accused IPOB leader of supporting terrorism and issuing threats via Radio Biafra.

“Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB’s leader, is clearly unconcerned. That he feels no need to even disguise his support of terrorism is worrisome.”

“Though IPOB’s principal aim is to restore a breakaway state of Biafra in the southeastern parts of Nigeria, Mr. Kanu’s rhetoric has become increasingly strident, “I don’t want peaceful actualization (of Biafra).

“Mr. Kanu has said through his Radio Biafra channel, used to project threats, instructions, and propaganda into Nigeria from the safety of London, “If they don’t (give us Biafra), they will die.

“Neither does Mr. Kanu make idle threats. The December revelation of IPOB’s 50,000 strong-armed paramilitary wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), complete with a Swastika-style flag, marked the end to all pretenses of being a peaceful movement.

“What had been largely unspoken was publicly declared. Since then, violent IPOB attacks on both security personnel and civilians have surged by a terrifying 59%; deaths by 344%,” he wrote.

Sheeran further explained that tagging the secessionist group with a terror label would “hit IPOB’s wallet hard”, adding that if done, no organisation that uses the US currency would be able to conduct legal transactions with IPOB.

“As soon as the designation is applied, no organization that utilizes U.S. currency would be able to legally conduct transactions with the organization. By cutting off IPOB’s funding, the U.S. would weaken the 50,000 strong paramilitary outfit, and provide Nigeria’s security forces room to train their sights squarely on ISIS-affiliated Boko Haram in the Northeast of the country.”

“Counterterrorism operations against Boko Haram have long been assisted by U.S. agencies working in close coordination with the West African government,” he added.

Your concerns are justified. Any man would have raised those concerns too. However, from my findings, the Ohio Police Department are also justified too to have suspended the search. I found out that the Ohio River is 981-mile (1,579 km) long. It's almost the same distance as Lagos to Maiduguri which is a 23 hr 22 mins journey by road. So, it must have been an arduous task to begin to search for the missing car. Thank God for the advance in sonar technology.

Politics / Re: It Is Legal For DSS To Arrest Suspects At Night - The Cable Replies Femi Falana by Bodmas94(m): 11:01am On Jul 08, 2021
How did you know 90% of lawyers are dullards? How many Nigerian lawyers have you met for you to ascertain that they are dullards? Do you know how many lawyers we have in Nigeria.

Attack Falana if you will but do not use that to cast aspersions on all Nigerian lawyers (or the 90%).

Thank you.

Nigeria is a failed country, if theres anything to replace F9, it would have been better...

We miss the days of Gani faweheni who are real interpreters of the law and a great activist...

If femi falana die, alot of things would go wrong, because he has been the voice of the voiceless....

I wonder what our so called dollard lawyers and being taught in school and law school that they feel intimidated to speak up for the truth....

90% of all nigeria lawyers are dullard.....

The sections quoted is very clear, even me that's is an ordinary microbiologist understand the message than our half baked lawyer....

Arrest can be made anytime, but it must go through the court order with an arrest warrant...

God please take me and my family to a saner country biko

The reason Yorubas are being dragged into it is because Yorubas have been mocking Igbos since 2015 Goodluck lost to Buhari, calling Igbos all sorts of demeaning names, to the extent they even celebrated publicly when Nigerian army went to Southeast to kill unarmed IPOB protesters for exercising their constitutional right.

I don't know what Igbos did to Yorubas that made Yorubas hate Igbos so so much when it comes to national politics and affairs.

Yes individullay, Igbos and Yorubas relate well but when it comes to national politics, national issue, voting, etc, Yorubas always love antagonising Igbos .

You don't care about Igbos or Biafra, yet when Igbos talk about their Biafra and how to leave Nigeria in peace, Yorubas will be the first to attack them verbally, etc.

But let Yorubas talk about Odua Republic and watch Igbos give them massive support, these are enough reasons to tell you who is right or wrong in the fight between Igbos and Yorubas.

Since the end of Nigerian civil war with Biafra, Hausa-Fulanis have ruled Nigeria, Yorubas have ruled Nigeria twice; it doesn't matter if its one Yoruba man that ruled twice as military and as civilian President that's his luck, but that's Yoruba slot.

If Yorubas were sensible and fair enough, they ought to throw their weight and support behind Igbo Presidency in 2023 at least to pacify Igbos like OBJ Presidency was used to pacify Yorubas in 1999.

But no, because of Yoruba wickedness, greed and hatred for Igbo, they want to produce another President in 2023, what does that say about the Yoruba tribe

Even the North are watching them and laughing at their wickedness and selfishness.

And even if Yorubas are to produce the President in 2023 for any reason at all, how is it even possible for a known political corrupt criminal and godfather like Tinubu to become the President of Nigeria under the watch of every Nigerian that know how Tinubu corruptly pocketed a whole Lagos state and some Yoruba states to the joy of many Yorubas

Notorious political criminals and corrupt, greedy, desperate political godfathers like Tinubu hardly win presidential election because everybody know their mission to become President, so Tinubu should return back to his local Yoruba politics where he plays god before they destroy him completely.

To become Nigeria's President, you must come with one unheard mantra or be seen as next Messiah not next destroyer or next devil. Check the records of all past and present elected Presidents of Nigeria and see if Tinubu have any unique record to sell him to Nigerians His only unique record is he is a ruthless political godfather, a master in political looting and godfatherism, nothing else. Which sensible Nigerian will support such criminal to become Nigeria's President

Tinubu is the General Overseer the Commander in Chief of Lagos state, a country inside country that's almost richer than Nigeria, yet go to Lagos, it is like a slum, most intra city roads in Lagos are deathtraps, street roads are all gone, infrastructure is dead in Lagos, obtaining Lagos state land occupancy certificate or CofO or whatever call it is a big problem on the Island because Tinubu have huge interest in all lands in Lagos and indirectly dictates when and where CofO is issued to property owners and prospective property buyers, he has turned Lagos to a slum instead of a mega city competing with top global cities, all because of his greed and selfishness, yet Yorubas want such man to become next Nigeria's President, is that not wickedness

Northerners are not as daft as Yorubas think they are, let's watch and see as things unfolds anyway.

Good morning

Even though I decided to go into early retirement on Nairaland for obvious reasons, your comment was so sensible that it called me out of retirement.

May your well of wisdom never run dry.

this forum is not for matured minds. If you meet the people behind most of those monikers that takes pride in engaging in E tribal wars, you will realize they are all low lives.
The mods are nothing to write home about too. I wonder what they gain in pushing stuffs like this to front page.
its not like this will reduce crime or stop crime. so what's the point.
Mark my words Nairaland will be history very soon. Seun has left the site in the hands of lazy immature halfeducated, shortsighted, folks.
QED

God bless you and @iykololo for your reasoning. For some time now, I've held myself back from commenting on any posts for obvious reasons.

However, the above tribal posts, which exudes nothing but acrimony, make me want to reach the conclusion that we have lost it in Nigeria.
Such sentiments would not have been much repulsive if it were coming from the older generation. To think that youths of this century who are supposed to be purpose driven, like we have it in other climes, are the ones behind this ethnic jingoism is something that makes me want to cry for this country.

As for Nairaland, I have lost faith in it a long time ago. What's the point of bringing such a post to the front page? Something that does not promote national unity... That does not add one naira to the economy....That only provides an avenue for people to wreak more havoc on the fabric of our unity.....

Seun Osewa, if you have been on vacation, it is high time you returned back, or else your efforts of many years may be wounded fatally THESE PEOPLE ABOVE.

Brother, this is politics... Which is all about interests..... Personal interests at that. We shouldn't get emotional when we developments like this happen. I can bet that all those guys up there did not go that meeting to represent the yoruba people... But their own interests... The same thing applies to leaders of all other ethnic groups...

The MESSAGE is clear... Their interests first before those of the masses.

I agree with you but with some reservations anyway (as regards APC being the most useless party on earth.... All our parties are actually... I guess that's our definition of politics in this part of the world) . Our leaders ought to be a little bit more responsible and responsive than the way in which they have shown themselves out lately. Yes, a lot of killings are going on across Nigeria, with no end seeming to be in sight...... Like a nairalander said earlier, our leaders, at the slightest opportunity, gather to celebrate when their sons and daughters are being wedded, christening ceremonies, project launching.... Yet it's a rare occurrence to see them gather when scores of people are killled which is a fallout of their irresponsibility and irresponsiveness of the highest order. No form of empathy towards gruesome killings and genocide that happen here in the country...yet they are quick to commiserate with such happenings of less degree in the international degree......

IF THEY ALL COULD BE GATHERED FOR WEDDINGS... LET THEM ALL GATHER FOR MASS BURIALS

Probably then they would live up to the reason why they were given the MANDATES in the first place
