Nigeria is the powerhouse of ecowas, it’ll primarily be them conducting a war. And all major figures in Nigeria not in Tinubu’s cabinet are dead set against a war. He already got rejected by the senate, but if Tinubu drags the country to war anyways it’ll likely set Northern Nigeria on fire. Any army going in to Niger will have to deal with chaos in their supply lines and potentially homefront insurgencies, on top of being already unmotivated over conducting a war too many people believe is on the behest of France.
In all likelihood the Niger junta would fall, but the effects would be catastrophic for the region. Ecowas isn’t going to gain any international clout for potentially doubling the migration crisis into Europe |

>IF E.C.O.W.A.S. goes in and the operation goes well
It won't go well.
On top of that, they have 0.0001% chance of reinstating Bazoum, and even if they do, he won't last a week.
So not only is it going to create a total freaking disaster, but it also won't achieve the stated objective.
=
Anyone who ever set foot in this area of the world knows it is a bad idea and that it would wreck havoc.
Of course the ECOWAS military chiefs know that. The ECOWAS heads of state also know that.
The main reason they keep on talking about it, is to send a strong political signal that a coup is not OK.
This is about making sure that a coup does not happen in their own country and that their own Presidents and their families do not end up in a dungeon somewhere.
But they know a military intervention would be a disaster of biblical proportions for Niger, North West Africa and also southern Europe.
Nobody wants that in Africa. |

- **Heads of state ordered standby force to be assembled**
- **Official: most ECOWAS members ready to participate**
- **Niamey residents back coup leaders, criticise ECOWAS**
ACCRA/NIAMEY, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The West African bloc ECOWAS stands ready to intervene militarily in Niger should diplomatic efforts to reverse a coup there fail, a senior official told army chiefs who were meeting in Ghana on Thursday to discuss the details of a standby force.
Niger military officers deposed President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 and have defied calls from the United Nations, ECOWAS and Western powers to reinstate him, prompting West African heads of state to order the standby force to be assembled.
"Let no one be in doubt that if everything else fails, the valiant forces of West Africa...are ready to answer to the call of duty," ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah said.
"By all means available, constitutional order will be restored in the country," he told assembled defence chiefs from member countries, listing past ECOWAS deployments in Gambia, Liberia and elsewhere as examples of readiness.
Niger has strategic importance beyond West Africa because of its role as a hub for foreign troops involved in the fight against Islamist insurgents in the Sahel region and its uranium and oil reserves.
Western countries fear the junta could follow the lead of neighbouring Mali, where the military government threw out French troops and instead invited in mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group, which has welcomed the coup in Niger.
In Niger's capital Niamey, where large crowds have taken part in protests against ECOWAS and in favour of the coup leaders, residents rejected the idea of an outside intervention to reinstate the elected president and civilian government.
"I'm not afraid because I know our armed forces are well prepared to deal with any eventuality," said radio technician Omar Yaye.
"ECOWAS is manipulated by foreign powers. When we see the reactions of France since the coup and especially the harshness of ECOWAS I can only think that these are coordinated actions between France and ECOWAS," he said, echoing anti-French rhetoric used by the junta since the coup.
**'CAT AND MOUSE'**
France, Niger's former colonial ruler, has denied the junta's accusation that it was seeking to destabilise the country or that it had violated its airspace. It has said it supported ECOWAS efforts to restore constitutional order.
French troops, along with U.S., German and Italian forces, are present in Niger as part of international efforts to combat the Islamist insurgents who have caused thousands of deaths and forced millions to flee their homes over the past decade. |

I mean it’s not a good situation regardless, your guaranteed destabilization if you do nothing. If they do nothing the insurgencies, refuges and crime will get worse and spread(as we saw with mark and Burkin Faso), Russia will have even more power to operate in the region, and this sends a message to every general in the region that being a military dictator can work.
Overall I view the African Union stopping it would be like France/Germany saying the Eastern Europe should do nothing as Ukraine is invaded by Russia, this is a west African problem and west Africa should lead. |

bigadler: You're regarding reddit opinions by some American illiterates who don't know basic geography as a yardstick to judge the Nigerian army but you forgot that the US special forces were gunned down like amateurs when they went on surveillance in Niger republic. The video is on YouTube, go and watch it...
The Nigerian army is definitely not as advanced as top military forces but it's not like Niger isn't even much more archaic and less funded. The backup you guys believe that Nigerien putschists have, speaking of the Wagner group, is just a facade and they are highly incompetent. Belarus which is another arm of the Russian government came to Nigeria, Ogun state (Proforce), to buy tactical vehicles from a Yoruba manufacturer recently.
I don't support any military action on Niger republic but what's going on in Niger is much more than just military machismo. It's an ECOWAS decision and I don't think it's right for any democratically elected government to be booted out. It's only a matter of time before Nigeriens started complaining about the military regime cos it's been proven to be much more problematic than a corrupt democracy. Nigeria is a case study- from one military regime to the other... we never achieved anything, instead Abacha loots are being recovered till date.
Let's stop supporting coup d'etats simply because we're angry with the state of political affairs in Nigeria. I agree with what you have said I am just trying to show the distrust for the Nigerian Army by foreign pundits as its not fair |
Politics › Re: What Was Said About The Nigerian Army On Reddit by bolaino(op): 3:35pm On Aug 18, 2023 |
Yea some people don't seem to realize that if the remaining ECOWAS states don't do anything, this would embolden other military leaders in their own countries to launch their own coups too.
And the extra Islamists around their borders doesn't help either. |

Truth be told Nigerian army is a total joke. It’s a small broke state with near inexistant military. Putschists expectation that the whole army which was until recently under the authority of a democratic government is going to fight to death to defend them against an international coalition is either completely delusional or a bluff. Most of the military will scramble at the first air strike and the putchists will flee to Mali |

Please, we challenge Bolaino to show proofs of this claim with original receipts to tender to a competent court and law enforcement agencies if not, hold your breathe for the rest of your life.

bolaino: I want to use this medium to express my new found convictions for the case of Nigeria to remain one, instead of a conflageration of fiefdoms. Nigeria is a very unique country, although we might not be as civilized as western countries, but one thing we are blessed with in Nigeria is our ability to co exist with each other, despite religious or tribal bigotry. If you go to any Nigeria Farmers market, you will see all Nigerians engaging in intelligent commerce to better their lives. in Nigerian Markets and other public places like motor parks, schools, etc. you will see Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba in these places. what this signifies is that the typical Nigerian would never refuse to do a business transaction with you because of your tribe or ethnicity but rather they would refuse to do business with you based on your attitude and disposition coupled with how much can they trust you. that tells you that Nigerians whether literate or illiterate are good critical thinkers there fore are capable of thinking things through. and if Nigerians can have an open mind towards the issue of One Nigeria they will realize that in this 21st century and time to come it would be better for us collectively as Africans to continue building the civilization we have achieved so far by being recognized as a single Republic instead of an area of rebel groups and seccessionists. i believe we can correct the mistakes our leaders have made and do better for the future generation of Nigerians that are coming. let us have hope and keep faith in a one indivisible and unites ONE NIGERIA.. |

bolaino: Fulani herdsmen are Muslim Jihadists and are well known to be among the foot soldiers of Boko Haram, and Hezbollah has become a sponsor of both the activities of Fulani herdsmen and Bokoharam respectively, and it's high time the Nigerian people and Nigerian Government calls a spade a spade and a shovel a shovel, The only way for the issues of incessant killings by Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram to stop is by giving in to their demands and that is to create a separate governing system for them governed by Sharia law, as these people only want To be governed by Muslim laws and I don't see anything wrong with that the only thing wrong in what they are doing is the killing and maiming of innocent people just to force them into becoming Muslims, the Fulani herdsmen who are also boko Haram fighters and ground soldiers should be allowed to form their own autonomous region in the north east and they should be allowed to rule themselves anyway they want but their activities should be restricted solely in the north and security outfits like Amotekun should be given more firepower to tackle the menace of these fulaniherdsmen Boko Haram if they encroach to other parts of the country, This is the only viable way to keep the overall peace in the entire sub saharan region of West Africa, they should be given space to rule themselves with Sharia Law. |
