While the world continues on its series of changes that occur every day, the people in it are faced with many challenges and the blame game is still played. They gripped in the fear of what will happen tomorrow. Tension, depression, prostration has become the odor of the day, happiness, joy and prosperity something of the past. These aspects of change include and not only limited to areas of education, economy, leadership, politics and poverty (recording high levels). These changes are also disseminated in many countries across the world of which Nigeria is inclusive. There is no gainsay that many things have changed in Nigeria. There is high level of poverty, widespread corruption, poor quality of education, increasing social vices and discrepancies among others. These has created challenges which led to the creation of the change agenda of All Progressive Congress that is inaugurated in to government on 29th may, 2015. However the challenge now in the hands of government is how to actualize the change while in the people is how to embrace and effect the change. The current administration had promised people change which they are still waiting to start manifesting in all aspect of their lives by them sitting and watching without acting upon it. There is no doubt that the world we live today is “impressing people with speech”. We always put hope in a good man to bring the change, and after assuming office we also expect them to roll the sleeves and get to the ground while we fold our arms instead of coming together to effect the change. We should not rely on someone to effect change it is you and I that can effect it. The Process of Planned Change Change is often one of the most challenging events an organization will go through. At times it subject people to many hardship on the way of implementation because many factors come into play. To maximise the success of any change in an organization managers need to create and follow a logical sequence of steps to ensure the objectives of the change are accomplished. Hence Hartzell in study.com identified the following steps: • Recognize the need for change Several factors lead to a change in a system, and it can be internal or external. Managers at all level are expected to be aware of these internal and external for forces that potentially compromise the success of the organization and promptly respond by changing some aspects of the organization. • Develop change goals Once the need for change is recognized the manager must understand why it is needed. In developing goals the manager must provide the objectives of the change and expectations of how it will respond to the driving forces that created the need for change. • Appoint a change agent The change agent is someone who will serves as a leader during change development and implementation. They are typically forward-thinking individuals who are highly charismatic, good with people and capable of inspiring people to accept the change and even aid in the implementation. • Assess the current climate The change agent should be good in assessing the current climate of the organization or condition within the system. This will help in determining how ready the organization and the members are for the change. He should spend time gathering information relating to the culture of the environment, available resources, peoples attitude, training possibilities and leadership. This data will then used by the change agent to prepare his people for the change by offering information relating to why the change is needed, what the desired future state will be, how it will be than the current state and how the change will affect the members of the environment or organization • Develop a change plan method of implementation Developing a change plan provides a roadmap that guides how the change will be implemented in such a way that people can be able to achieve the change goals themselves. This involves assigning responsibilities and delegations, provision of specific methods or procedures that should be followed in a milestone to implement the change. • Implement the plan This involves putting the change plans in to actions. The change agent is in critical time as he works to maintain momentum and monitor the progress of implementation, he should also pay attention to the distribution of adequate resources, the knowledge and understanding of his people about the implementation, provides support and remove barriers to ensure successful implementation. • Evaluate the success of the plan at reaching the change goals Every process is being evaluated to determine its success or failure. The data should serve as basis of whether to continue, modify or change certain procedures. It also shows weakness and strength of the process. According to Nwankwo in 1982, the principle of change asserts change? Yes! But only when necessary. This principle recognizes that there are innumerable forces that demand change in every situation. The problem therefore is how to determine and implement necessary change without off-setting the stability of the system. This principle comprises adaptability, flexibility and stability. • Adaptability: this principle stresses that any organization must be adaptable to change if it must ensure its utility or relevance to the society. The change administrator must identify and harness programmes and techniques of the system. However, only necessary and carefully considered and experimented upon changes should be adopted. • Flexibility: related to adaptability point to the situational nature of change and development in the system. Organizational objectives, policies, programmes, structures and procedures must be flexible so as to be capable of accommodating all necessary change and innovation. Each new phenomenon must be tailored to suit the local or situational constraints of a particular system. • Stability: the principle of stability appears to be opposite of the principle of adaptability and flexibility. This should not be entirely so. Stability emphasizes the need to conserve the good in the past. Certain organizational goals, practices, and programmes which have been proven very useful in the past should be preserved to ensure stability in the organization. Everything cannot be flexible or changed every time. Even when change is necessary stability demands that it should be gradual to ensure evolution (gradual development) rather than revolution in the management of any system. In conclusion change is not a day work, rather it is a continuous process, it does not start in January and ends September. Also that to achieve an effective change it must have a plan or scheme that can always be referred to. I order to change any system the people in it must recognize the need for change, it should be presented in an acceptable way, the change must be flexible with the existing rules and should be able to endure the test of time as today people will conform and tomorrow they will disagree until they become used it. |
The recent post I saw here on NL enundated me to write this. Just like there are physical causes to sickness there are also spiritual causes. Briefly, spiritual causes of moth odor are: *Back biting: when you talk about people behind their back is like you've eaten their meat. I don't need to tell you what happens when someone eat an uncooked raw meat. *Eating/drinking haram: no doubt that anything that is made unlawful to us is harmful to our health. *Talkativeness: talking too much is not what successful people do. A good believer talk less and act more. I would have like to have said more but I tried to stay as brief as possible because too long lines attract few readers What is then the way out Some of the things one can do to cure or reduce this type of mouth odor are: *Stay away from drinking and smoking *Stop backbiting people *Avoid drinking and smoking *Make a lot of "istigfar" i.e seeking of forgiveness *Make "miswak* a common practice- using chewing stick May God Almighty guide us all. |

God Almighty Has blessed the youth of every time phenomenal talents and exceptional courage but at the same time they are extremely vulnerable and susceptible. Hence if their talent is not nurtured correctly, the havoc and the problem they can cause is worse than that of the adults will put together. It is believed that the youngster never move by himself if he advances in good then he takes a nation with him, and if he plunges in evil an entire nation drowns with him. If the society will value the talent and the skills of this young man the horizon he will explore, the heights he will climb and the values he will add it will take decades and generations to achieve this. And hence the salient feature of a young man is courage because nothing is too daunting for him, naturally he likes things that challenges him. But unfortunately the challenge the youth of today are faced are myriad of societal problems that are chanting and echoing whispers to the youth to abuse their talents. These challenges have significant effects on how these young people will eventually turn out as they reach adulthood. Nigerian youth of today had been widely outclassed. Unlike previous generations; they are not considered as adult or children, hence are not too young to be pampered and not old enough to carry responsibilities on their shoulders. This has created a number of controversies in dealing with them. In this paper we will examine who are the youth, ex-rayed the most serious problems facing the Nigerian youth today and consider some solutions to help correct their course before it is too late. Who are the youth? Youth as it is said, is the most difficult part in the stages of life of an individual and each and every adult has passed. In Nigeria a youth are described as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria aged between 18 to 35 years. What are the root causes? • Communication gap- The gap between the youth and the seniors/elders is wider now. They always believed they are old enough for taking decisions on matters arising on their personal or social issues while the latter just refuse to hand over this responsibility to them. • Pressures- They are also faced with various pressures at this phase ranging from peer to media pressure. These come in form of dares, threats or competition into doing what one would avoid or what they heard or saw in the media. • Illiteracy- Today many young people cannot afford to go to school. This makes them remain illiterate and shameless which further forced them in to child labour when they want to enjoy life like the rest of their age group. This has led a number of them into losing their life or limbs by doing jobs which are meant for adults. • Growing up too past- Gone is the time when kids enjoyed being kids. At the earliest age today children are partaking in adult activities. Sex is now very popular as it is portrayed as a subject matter in our media. The movies, music, TV, internet and almost everywhere a kid turn he or she is bombarded with sexual suggestions of which back in the days one has to grow old enough in order to understand them. Where are the Youth of this Time? Nigerian youth today have shifted away from the right path, they are not congregating in lecture theatres, schools, mosques or churches but rather in show theatres, clubs, bars and other joints where social vices are taking place. This makes the future oblique. Top issues facing Nigerian Youth today Drug/Alcohol Abuse: In cinematic history there was a time where virtually every actor/actress was portrayed on a screen with a cigarette in hand. This was implied as cool by many, as a result everyone was doing it including children. With increasing awareness on the dangers of smoking these “cool” images reduced. But unfortunately, the same cannot be said about drugs and alcohol because they are staples in every media today. Simply one can say now drinking and using drugs is shown as being cool especially in our home shows. The numbers are increasing right from our secondary schools. They are moving in an intoxicated daze amplifying immature behaviour. This led to poor grades in schools, low attendance, anti-social behaviour and violent as the list goes on Violence in schools: Education is the foundation for which a child will be able to go forth out in to the world and build a life. But unfortunately schools have now turned from places of learning in to war zones. This has gone beyond minor bullying but rather to serious violence. Students are being murdered, stabbed, shots, and fought everyday in schools. This occurs as a result of cultism, rivalry or competitions. Education Disparity: Education is an important tool for making individual an important member of the society. It provides the child with the opportunities to become successful in his life. In today’s Nigeria some people have it better than others. This issue is beyond just one school is better than another. Today average Nigerian cannot youth afford to go to school and those able to are faced with many challenges like dropouts, improper education that can prepare them to compete in a job market with their peers who have access to better paid schools. The financial status makes the poor average Nigerian to attend school lacking in many necessities and resources required for a good quality of education, while only the rich ones can attend highly equipped schools. Socio-Political Issues: Nigerian youth have failed in the future leadership, they are backward in country’s politics as they are employed and used as political thugs. There is very little sense of belonging among the youth especially as parties opposed. This has resulted from them not being properly educated and guided. Unemployment: This is described as a disease whose cure is still unknown. The high rate of unemployment occurs as a result of shifting economy, incompetency and lack of entrepreneur skills. Depression: Stop any youth and let him pour his heart, the fears that are hunting him are sufficient to warrant depression. They are griped in the fear of future and life after graduation. In an effort to divert and distract their fear they indulge in to drug addiction especially the ecstatic ones which further aggravates the condition. Study has also linked depression and suicide, which we have started seeing now in our country. What is the way forward? In order to navigate the way forward, to get the attention of the youth back the following recommendations are made: 1. Education: The 9 basics should be made free and compulsory in every state. Children should be forced to go to school at this level, any child caught on the streets hawking during school time should be apprehended and his parents should be called on just like what is now being practiced in Lagos State. 2. Values and Morals: These should be install in children at schools and homes. Teaching of values and morals should be included in early school curriculum. The child should be able to learn how to live as acceptable member of the society based on the conformity with country’s rules and regulations. 3. Training: At every stage of education they should be trained in skill acquisition that will provide them some trades and occupation making them to develop themselves and become self-reliant. 4. Counselling: These services should not be only provided in schools but rather in the community also. The seniors should be able to counsel and admonish the youth in the community, they should not keep quite or fold their arms in what they are doing, rather they should guide them and serve as role model to them. |
