New Zealand is the best place in the world to be a prostitute thanks to its robust laws, according an organisation which represents the nation’s sex workers. For almost a decade and a half, sex workers in New Zealand have been protected by the Prostitution Reform Act 2003, which sought to decriminalise prostitution. The legislation aimed to prevent exploitation, safeguard sex workers' human rights, promote their occupational health and safety, and prohibit under-18s from entering the industry. This has enabled prostitutes to enjoy the benefits other professions take for granted, including signing contracts, receiving regular pay, and being able to seek help from the police. Catherine Healey, national co-ordinator for the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective, told news(dot)com(dot)au that the country is the best place to be a sex worker because of the legislative framework widely regarded as the most effective in the world. Ms Healey told the website that sex workers now feel “completely comfortable” reporting clients to the police if they are abusive, threatening or unable to pay their bills, and said that the system “keeps exploitation in check.” “We had three murders in Christchurch a decade ago and police said the cooperation from women in the industry was the only reason they solved the crimes,” she said. In the UK, prostitution itself is legal, but surrounding activities including paying for sex with someone under duress, soliciting sex in a public place, and kerb crawling are prohibited. However, a law coming into force in Northern Ireland on 1 June will make Northern Ireland the only place in the UK where someone can be convicted of paying for sex. Sex worker campaign groups have called on prostitution to be legalised in the UK, and for the government to adopt a system similar to New Zealand’s. Cari Mitchell, a spokesman for the English Collective of Prostitutes, told The Mirror earlier this year:“In New Zealand the law that has been put in place is on the basis of health and safety,” Cari said. “The last thing women need is to be criminalised for it,” she said, adding: “It’s outrageous when women are only trying to survive.” Source: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/love-sex/sex-industry/new-zealand-is-the-best-country-to-work-as-a-prostitute-says-sex-worker-advocacy-group-10267685.html |

Ondo strange disease not contagious, initial results show ethanol poisoning – Official The Ondo State Government says a strange disease that has killed over a dozen people since its outbreak on April 15 in Ode-Irele, Irele Local Government Area of the state, is not contagious and could bea result of ethanol poisoning. The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dayo Adeyanju, stated this on Sunday at a news conference in Akure. He said findings from post-mortem carried out on the victims and other laboratory tests revealed that the disease was neither epidemic nor contagious. According to the commissioner, preliminary report showed ethanol poison found in the systems of all the victims. “Our investigations revealed that the victims, who are commercial motorcyclists, gathered at some local joints to take alcoholic substance mixed with roots and some other local herbs on the eve of the outbreak of the disease. “I can assure you that the disease is in no way contagious. The fact that none of the caregivers has contracted the disease has greatly underscored this point. “Therefore, the fear of spread does not arise and should be discouraged. “We strongly suspect ethanol poison and in view of this, we have ordered for another toxicology test for surviving victims,” Mr. Adeyanju said. Ebola Alert, an evidence-driven group of volunteer professionals who helped withthe Ebola Virus Disease interventions in Nigeria, had said on Friday that samples taken from victims and tested in a laboratory in Lagos tested negative to Ebola and five other deadly diseases. “#OndoX samples tests negative for Ebola Virus, Yellow Fever, Lassa Fever Virus, Rift Valley Fever Virus, Dengue Virus, West Nile Virus,” the organisation said. The Ondo commissioner, who said that there had been no report of new cases in the last three days, explained that 18 out of the 23 people affected have died. He said the five survivors, who have currently gone blind, have been referred to the University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, for further examination and monitoring. Mr. Adeyanju said he would not join issues with traditionalists who believe that the outbreak of the disease was because some youth stole from shrine of some gods. The commissioner, however, said that the dead would be buried in body bags to curtail any spread of the disease.
