Travel / Paul-henri Nargeolet Has Made More Than 35 Titanic Site Trips by born2lead01: 10:54pm On Jun 23, 2023
Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French maritime expert who has been on over 35 dives to the Titanic wreck site, is one of the five people aboard the submersible that has been missing since Sunday, according to his literary representative, Mathieu Johann.

Mr. Nargeolet, 77, is the director of underwater research for RMS Titanic, Inc., an American company that owns the salvage rights to the famous wreck and displays many of the artifacts at Titanic exhibitions. The company conducted eight research and recovery expeditions between 1987 and 2010, according to its website.

The dozens of dives Mr. Nargeolet has made to the wreck site include previous OceanGate expeditions on the Titan, the missing submersible. In 2022, he enabled the discovery of an “extraordinarily biodiverse abyssal ecosystem on a previously unknown basalt formation near the Titanic,” according to the company.

Mr. Nargeolet’s company, RMS Titanic, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Sunday, in a statement on Twitter, it expressed “heartfelt support to the Boston Coast Guard during their search and rescue mission” but made no mention of Mr. Nargeolet.

While Mr. Nargeolet was born in Chamonix, in the French Alps, he has devoted his career to the ocean. He was an amateur diver in his youth before joining the French Navy in 1964, according to a biography published on the website of the Cité de la Mer, an oceanography museum in Cherbourg, France, that has hosted exhibitions of objects salvaged from the wreck and that has collaborated with Mr. Nargeolet.

During two decades in the Navy, he was a mine-clearing diver, a deep-sea diver, and a submarine pilot. That experience led him to work for IFREMER, a publicly funded French maritime research institute, where he was in charge of its submarine exploration crafts during early expeditions to the Titanic wreck. His first dive to the Titanic was in July 1987, about two years after the wreck was discovered.

“It was a pretty unforgettable moment,” Mr. Nargeolet said in an interview last year with HarperCollins France, which had just published a book he had written about the Titanic.

He described how the small team inside the craft was chatty until it reached the wreck. Then, he said, “for the next 10 minutes there wasn’t a sound in the submarine.”

“We didn’t know at that time that we would return several times, and that I would return as often as I have been able to,” he added.

In the interview, Mr. Nargeolet said the Titanic had captured public imagination not just because of James Cameron’s 1997 movie but because everyone found something to latch onto, whether the ship’s construction, the diverse passenger list, or the sinking itself.

“Once you’ve gotten your head into the Titanic, it’s hard to get it out,” he said.

Mr. Nargeolet was married to Michele Marsh, an Emmy Award-winning newscaster who was a celebrated anchor on nightly programs in New York City for over two decades. She died in 2017.

Last year, Mr. Nargeolet told the French newspaper Ouest-France that he met Ms. Marsh after she contacted him to secure an interview with Michel Navratil, a Frenchman who was one of the last survivors of the Titanic.

Politics / UK Parliament To Debate Nnamdi Kanu’s Repatriation To Nigeria by born2lead01: 5:43pm On Jul 06, 2021
The United Kingdom Parliament is set to commence a debate on the repatriation of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), had last week revealed that Kanu was repatriated and subsequently arraigned him. However, Malami did not reveal where the IPOB leader was repatriated from.

IPOB as well as several notable groups, however, alleged that Kanu was repatriated from Kenya, an allegation which Kenya has since denied.

The separatist group had accused the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of abducting its leader in the East-African country, a claim confirmed by Kanu’s attorney, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who accused Kenya’s special police force of arresting, detaining and torturing Kanu for days before he was later handed over to the Nigerian government.

The British government had also stated last week that Kanu, who was travelling with a British passport, was not arrested within its shores.

But the UK Parliament, in a parliamentary schedule posted on its website, said it will set aside a debate on Wednesday, July 7, to discuss the British government’s assessment of Kenya’s role in Mr Kanu’s arrest.

According to the document, Lord Alton of Liverpool will be raising the issue at the House of Lords and will query the government on the separatist leader’s transfer to Nigeria.

Lord Alton of Liverpool to ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of (1) the alleged role of the government of Kenya in the detention and alleged mistreatment of Nigerian activist Nnamdi Kanu, (2) the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr Kanu to Nigeria against his will, and (3) of any assistance being provided to him by the High Commission in Abuja. HL1665,” the document read.

Business / Bank Mistakenly Credited A Zimbabwean Student's Account With N19.4M by born2lead01: 8:48am On Apr 09, 2018
A final year student nurse at Gweru hospital is languishing in remand prison after squandering $54 000 “miraculously” deposited into his CABS Bank account last year.

Twenty Four year old Kelvin Kutadza of Mkoba 19 in Gweru was on Friday remanded in custody to Monday for sentencing after pleading guilty to 54 counts of fraud totalling $54 052.34 .

According to the court, sometime in July last year, CABS Bank erroneously deposited the money into Kutadza’s bank account following a system failure, money which Kutadza went on to squander by making various transfers into his mobile phone account and into his MBCA Bank Account.

Kutadza went on to buy a house in Mkoba 19 for $32 000 and two cars worth $10 500 using part of the money. $2 300 was recovered when the bank realised the mistake last week leading to his arrest.

In his defence, Kutadza confessed to being a highly devoted Christian and believed that the money was miracle money which he had been promised in church.

“When I saw the money in my account, I honestly believed that my prayers for miracle money had been answered that is why I used the money,” Kutadza told the court.

He pleaded with the court to forgive him and allow him to finish his training as a nurse where he is due to graduate on the 5th of May. He pleaded that he was going to dispose the house and cars to pay back the money to the bank.

The bank is also reportedly investigating two other people who benefited from the error and swindled the financial institution of over $200 000. The bank has since dismissed thirteen of its information technology staff members over the system technical failures.

Health / Shocking! Nigerian Mega Church Trains Quack Nurses In Three Weeks by born2lead01: 3:56pm On Sep 08, 2017
A Nigerian church, Omega Power Ministries, (OPM) has allegedly churned out quack nurses through its three-week skills acquisition programme titled: “society for safe motherhood.”

In a video posted online, the quack nurses, all clad in white uniforms boasted that in less than three weeks, using the curriculum of the mother for safe motherhood, they had learnt how to assess the gestational age of the foetus, give injections and set up infusions, administer immunization, amongst other health services.

Addressing members of the church, one of the quack nurses who said she was an Accountancy graduate of the University of Porth-Harcourt without any prior medical training, boasted that through the primary healthcare component of the skills acquisition programme, all the trainees could perform “growth monitoring, oral rehydration, breastfeeding, immunization, family planning, and fertility clinic tasks” all within three weeks.‎

To further demonstrate her knowledge, she added that “if a pregnant woman has amniotic fluid the foetus would not be able to lie well and would be floating.”

On his part, the Founder of the Church, Pastor Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, said that the three-week nursing and midwifery training was sponsored by the tithes and offerings given by the members of church.

“The tithe is not for you to buy planes and private jets. It is not for Pastor to build a very expensive school that the members that contributed to it cannot attend. The tithe and offering is to use it to help the less privilege,” he said.

Meanwhile, a registered nurse and member of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria who spoke under anonymity told DAILY POST that Council was aware of the viral video and the quack nurses churned out by the church, and was going to do everything possible to investigate and get to the root of the matter, as well as ensure necessary actions taken.

“The OPM founder is aware of the laws, that it is the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria that has the powers by law to accredit Schools of Nursing and Midwifery to train Nurses and Midwives in Nigeria and also to licence them to practice.

“We (Council) are putting modalities to handle the matter, please, nurses should be rest assured of the Council’s assurance in protecting our Noble Profession,” the nurse said.

Politics / Punch Newspaper Deliberate Misrepresentation Of Nursing Of Nursing Profession by born2lead01: 5:23pm On Jul 05, 2017
RE: OGUN COLLEGE SUSPENDS LECTURER FOR IMPREGNATING NURSING STUDENT: PUNCH’S DELIBERATE MISINFORMATION AND MALICIOUS MISREPRESENTATION OF THE NOBLE PROFESSION OF NURSING: WHAT SCORES DO SAMSON FOLARIN AND THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER HAVE TO SETTLE WITH THE NURSING PROFESSION?

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Ogun state chapter has once again observed with dismay the above titled publication by a supposedly renowned newspaper, The Punch newspaper, and we are disappointed that both the correspondents and editors of a news outfit of such repute will descend so low to propagate outright misinformation to the unsuspecting public with a deliberate attempt to smear the image of the noble profession of nursing. The Punch newspapers has at different times published stories wherein persons who are neither registered nurses nor student nurses have been mischievously referred to as either nurses or student nurses with the malevolent intention of defaming the good image of the noble profession of nursing. Some of such unscrupulous publications include stories about a student of the college of health technology, Ilese Ijebu and her lecturer involved in a pregnancy scandal titled “Lecturer impregnated me, rejects pregnancy, says nursing student. It wasn’t me, I used condom - Lecturer” on the 22nd day of May, 2017 by one Samson Folarin.

It is pertinent to note and inform well-meaning members of the public that the school, the student and the lecturer have nothing to do with the nursing profession as the school does not have the requisites to train nurses and neither the lecturer nor the student have anything to do with the nursing profession. The misinformation was thought to be an honest mistake when the story was initially published and attempts were made to correct the misinformation by contacting correspondents and officials of the newspaper outlet including the agent behind the story, one Samson Folarin, both in person and via phone calls but such efforts were rebuffed,as the same author using the platform of the outlet published three (3) different follow ups to the story using headlines that malign the appellation “nursing student” despite the fact there is nothing about the nursing profession remotely or closely associated with the stories.

It is disturbing to note that this will not be the first time that The Punch newspapers have done similar publications wherein persons who are not nurses have been reported as nurses especially when such persons are involved in scandalous or disreputable acts. It is highly unfortunate that the editors and correspondents of the Punch newspapers; who are expected to be conscience of the nation and as such has been saddled with the responsibility of searching for the truth and disseminating correct information; have demonstrated deviance from such responsibility and have chosen to take the ignoble path of spreading misinformation and half-truths. Other such irresponsible publications include the story of a maid who stole a baby in a private hospital in Abeokuta who The Punch wrongly referred to as a nurse and that of a birth attendant who pulled off a baby’s hand in the process of delivery also in Ogun state inaccurately described as a nurse by The Punch newspaper now rapidly gaining notoriety in such matters. It is expected that for an organization of such reputation, the least qualifications for employing correspondents and editors should not be less than that of professionals and as such these calibre of persons are expected to not only know but also correctly inform the general public about the difference between professionals and non-professionals in the health and indeed all other sectors. However, the likes of Samson Folarin of the Punch newspapers and their editors obviously being quacks within the profession of journalism, have demonstrated their mental laziness by being unable to correctly identify who nurses or nurses in training are as differentiated from allied health professionals whom they erroneously portray to the general public as nurses.

One would expect professional journalists to join in the fight against quackery in the health sector by playing the role of educating the public on the need to and how to identify qualified, registered and licensed professionals and patronizing only such while seeking health services but these ones (Samson Folarin and co) being quacks themselves have chosen to promote quackery in the health sector through their numerous publications targeted at confusing the public about the identity of nurses and maliciously denting of the image of the noble profession of nursing. NANNM, Ogun state on behalf of the dutiful, hardworking and immaculate nurses of this country hereby calls on well-meaning Nigerians to beware of the antics of these lots who have chosen to follow the ignoble part of unprofessional journalism and wants to drag the esteemed profession of nursing in the mud. We appeal to goodhearted Nigerians to identify them as mere mischief makers and ignore them. We further appeal to Nigerians to help us summon Samson Folarin and his cohorts with The Punch newspapers to be bold enough to come out straight if they have any scores to settle with nurses and the nursing profession rather than employ these infantile and irresponsible strategy of maliciously portraying nurses and nursing in bad light.

Health / Rwanda Govt Bans Nurses And Doctors From Using Mobile Phones At Work by born2lead01: 4:48pm On Feb 10, 2017
Effective March 1, healthcare providers will be prohibited from using mobile phones during working hours to "ensure better service delivery."

The announcement was delivered, yesterday, by the Minister for Health, Dr Diane Gashumba, at a workshop of health personnel.

The workshop, held in Bugesera District, sought to chart ways to improve quality of health service delivery at all levels, according to officials.

The ministry made the decision to implement the policy after officials agreed that speaking for long on personal phones affects service delivery in the health sector, said Malik Kayumba, the head of the health communication division at Rwanda Biomedical Centre.

The ban applies to all health facilities during working hours.

"They (healthcare providers) were sharing best practices with reports indicating that some hospitals, which banned use of personal phones, proved to be more productive," said Kayumba.

He said the ministry will now discuss how to implement and enforce the ban.

Healthcare facilities will be fitted with office telephones for staff to use, said Kayumba.

Call for efficiency in implementation

Healthcare providers who spoke to The New Times were of mixed reactions, with some saying that while it is a positive move, mobile phones are effective tool when used well and there is need to ensure the decision doesn't backfire.

"Use of personal phones has a negative impact at some point as some can use it in their personal business while at work," said Agnes Uwayezu, the outgoing chairperson of National Council of Nurses and Midwives. "However, we also use them in daily communication so there is also need to look at how patients will not be affected due to lack of communication."

In some countries, medical staff are not allowed to use mobile phones while on duty but they have pagers they use to communicate work-related messages, and this could be a good solution for Rwanda, Uwayezu said.

A pager is a wireless telecommunications device that receives and displays numeric messages or receives and announces voice messages.

Some members of the public say the move will be hard to implement but could help patients receive better attention.

"It is worth giving a try. Often, patients are left unattended to while medics make noise on phones," tweeted Eric Mahoro, the director of programmes at Never Again Rwanda.

"That is a positive move," said JMV Kayiranga, from Kicukiro District. "It will improve service delivery."

The statement read, “The attention of UGONSA has been drawn to the unacceptable and condemnable excuse given by the senate for rejection of the nomination of Rt (Hon.) Nurse Ezekiel Yissa as a Non-Executive Commissioner of the NCC, where they asserted that his background as a career Nursing Officer will not put him in good stead to be able to effectively cope with the dynamics of the communication sector if his nomination is confirmed.

“With all due respect we take strong exception to such jaundiced, careless and irresponsible assertion that was made not only in bad light but also craftily designed to denigrate the nursing profession and to portray Nurses as people that are below average in public service and administration”.

“We found it laughable that the Senate of a country whose basic qualification for occupying the office of the Executive President, the highest office in the land, is the possession of a “Secondary School Certificate” went wide of the mark to denigrate the nursing profession, whose least category of qualifications, the RN, takes a school cert holder not less than 36months of excruciating academic rigours to obtain".

“Any follower of events in Nigeria would not be oblivious of the fact that the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who was also a former Governor of Kwara State has a political score to settle with Rt (Hon.) Nurse Ezekiel Yissa who had since fallen out of favour with him in Kwara politics”.

“While we are not interested in joining the fray over political issues between the duo, going below standard to drag the most patriotic profession, nursing, into the murky waters of their political row crossed the threshold of senatorial decency and is unacceptable to we, the members of the nursing profession”.

“If Rt (Hon.)Nurse Yissa, who meritoriously served this country and retired as a Deputy Director in the Civil Service and went further to serve as the Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly, rising meteorically as a result of his capacity and competence in public administration to become the Chairman of Conference of Speakers, is considered bereft of recognized standing experience in public administration as prescribed by Section 7(1) (h) of the NCC Act simply because he is a nurse, it portends that for all of us nurses - no matter how towering our qualifications, character, capacity or competence may be or how meritorious our service to our fatherland may be, we shall never be good enough to be confirmed by the senate when nominated for public offices”.

“Such unpatriotic posture of the Senate is not only an open-market insult to the nursing profession but a careless and irresponsible joke that is highly inimical and capable of damaging and destroying Nurses’ uncommon spirit of altruism and selfless sacrifices for national building and development and therefore must be condemned by every discerning mind”.

”The Sudden evaporation of the age-long legislative camaraderie of “bow and go” accorded to former legislators nominated for national posts by the senate during the turn of Nurse Yissa, a distinguished legislator, underscores that the rejection was more of political scores than the primitive and empty excuse of nursing background given”.

“But for ignorance and poor sense of history the senators would have known that nursing is a global profession sui generis that is as gainfully challenging as any other profession where brilliant scholars distinguish themselves and that nurses have excellently distinguished themselves in services to humanity throughout history such that some, after serving as Presidents of their countries, are today celebrated as liberation and transformation figures e.g. Janet Jagan of Guyana and Machel Samora of Mozambique”

“It is very unfortunate that having a nursing background, which is a strong advantage in other climes, is considered a strong disadvantage by our own Senators, and, alas, was the only reason that informed their failure to confirm the nomination of a patriotic Nigerian who has enviably distinguished himself in public administration and services.”

“As we invite well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on our senators to retract this demeaning label on the nursing profession by effecting the confirmation of the nomination of Rt (Hon) Nurse Yissa Ezekiel Benjamin without further delay, we urge all nurses to maintain decorum and continue to make usual altruistic sacrifices for the nation despite this unfortunate and unwarranted attack”, -the statement read.

Optimisticgondy:
I have a Nurse friend who has already attested about 5 certificates at Education and Foreign Affairs' Ministries, can he attest only his Nursing certificate out of the 5 or all? He's considering his purse as it's done at 18k per certificate as at today.

The Nurse friend of yours has successfully wasted his money. Before you can work in UAE you need to be Registered as a Nurse in the country, you don't need any attestation as registration in UAE supercede any form of attestation. Just tell him not to make any move to UAE before completing the registration process else he will only work menial jobs when he gets there. Nursesarena.com has all the information he needs to be registered as a nurse in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Education / Re: University Or School Of Nursing, Which Is Better? by born2lead01: 11:59am On Mar 10, 2016
Tbells91:
Hello everyone, I have a friend who wants to study nursing and chose LAUTECH. As a graduate of that school and her reputation as a time-waster due to recurring strike and all, i'm thinking it would be better to go to a school of nursing and midwifery instead cz she's 21years old already. So pls I need your advice to be able to advise her appropriately on what to do.

What's your view on this?
Thanks.

After 3years of nursing school and additional one and half years of midwifery she will still have to spend 4years as a direct entry student for her degree. If lautech is known for strike, why not try other universities? Here is the list of universities offering nursing degree in Nigeria and if she settles for nursing schools here is the list of schools of nursing presently selling application form

Health / We Have Exercised Enough Patience On Unified Scheme Of Service,Internship-Nurses by born2lead01: 12:57pm On Dec 15, 2015
Nurses in the country have voiced their concerns over the delay in the commencement of Internship and proper placement of graduate nurses. This was made known by the association’s president yesterday while delivering a welcome address at the ongoing induction program for the newly elected state administrative council members of NANNM at the NICON Luxury hotel, Abuja the capital of Nigeria.

"The much delay that is happening to the issue of the commencement of internship for BNSc graduates is of great concern for the Association. The unified scheme of service that is awaiting the consideration and approval of the national council on establishment is a twin issue to the intership" he said. The association National president further added that "the association has exercised enough patience on this matter."

The National president further noted that the clinical practices are bedeviled with many issues which includes :

1) Shortage of Nurses: The country currently has one of the worse nurse to population ratio which is affecting productivity, image and efficiency of Nurses. Although the World Health Organization recommends a nurse to a population ratio of 700, but according to the Open Journal of Nursing, 2014, Nigeria has less than 150,000 registered nurses to cater for an estimated 160 million population, giving an average nurse population ratio of 1 to 1,066 people.

The association president further stated that there are less than 20,000 Nurses in the employment of the 73 federal health institutions in Nigeria. This shortage affects education instructions as well as clinical practices

2) Infrastructural Development : Nigeria health facilities are less than internationally acceptable standard which makes it difficult to discharge optimal care. In some instances, nurses use mobile phone torchlight to perform Nursing duties, where lies efficiency and expected quality outcome? he asked.

3) The work environment: Unfavorable work environment in our health facilities are militating against effective performances. Without a positive work environment the impact of our professional services will amount to nothing. The worst situations occur in the primary health care level

4) Professional jurisdiction: In some cases professional jurisdictions are not religiously adhered to. Nurses and midwives are prevented from carrying out thier rightful duties in some health institutions in the country in contradiction to standard world best practices. This contributes to the negative health indices especially in maternal and infant mortality rate.

5) Quackery and the image of Nurse: Quackery is a cankerworm that is frustrating the efficiency of Nursing practices and creating a bad image for the profession. Quackery is a criminal offence and it is a great disservice to the Nation. All efforts should be directed towards reducing the menance of quackery to safeguard the interest of the massess.

On the challenges facing nursing education in Nigeria, the National NANNM President said:

"It is pertinent to speak on certain topical issues affecting health care service efficiency and quality outcome in Nigeria. The central issue in professional practices revolves around education, regulatioin and clinical practices. Today, the challenging factors cut accross all these strata. The problem of inadequately equipped institutions for nursing education and absence of available opportunity for linking the two major type of institutions offering education and training for nurses in Nigeria remain a clog in the wheel of progress for the profession. The much orchestrated Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (PGDN) is yet to have a proper placement in Nursing education.

On the absence of Nursing and Midwifery Council board which has stalled the activities of the regulatory board he said, " Infact , the absence of a board of management for the council is a disservice to the profession and capable of compromising quality healthcare services"
