Health / Public Ranks Nurses As Most Honest, Ethical Profession For 13th Straight Year by born2lead01: 9:05pm On Dec 21, 2014
SILVER SPRING, MD— As the American Nurses Association (ANA) embarks on a year long campaign to highlight the importance of nursing ethics and their impact on patients and health care quality, the annual Gallup survey on trust in professions shows the public continues to rate nursing as the most honest and ethical.

For the past 13 years, the public has voted nurses as the most honest and ethical profession in America in the Gallup poll.

This year, 80 percent of Americans rated nurses’ honesty and ethical standards as “very high” or “high,” 15 percentage points above any other profession.

“All nurses share the critical responsibility to adhere to the highest ethical standards in their practice to ensure they provide superior health care to patients andsociety,” said ANA President Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN.

“ANA is calling 2015 the Year of Ethics to highlight ethics as an essential component of everyday nursing practice and reinforce the trust patients have that nurses will protect their health and safety, and advocate on their behalf.”

As more Americans gain access to health care under the Affordable Care Act, consumers increasingly are finding that they can rely upon nurses to provide their preventive, wellness and primary care services.

Additionally, ANA has completed a revision of its Code of Ethics for Nurses, a cornerstone document of the nursing profession that upholds the best interests of patients, families and communities.

The new Code reflects many changes and evolutions in health care and considers the most current ethical challenges nurses face in practice.

The new Code will be released early in 2015. The revision involved a four-year process in which a committee received and evaluated comments on ethics issues from thousands of nurses.

The Year of Ethics will include educational activities supporting the Code and a three-day experts’ symposium.

Maybe. But am still wondering why the situation seems to be so different over there. I mean we used little to achieve much but they are using even too much trying to get the same result. Does it mean they are wasteful?

No,they are not being wasteful but they practice the ideal holistic care.

In Nigeria for instance, if I'm having fever and go to any hospital, the doctor will only ask for the symptoms and check for the signs of malaria and place me on antimalaria drugs with little or no test done. In western world however, lot of tests will be carried out to arrive at appropriate diagnosis before treatment. That accounts for the seemingly high cost of treatments over there and don't forget that most hospitals over there are run like private establishment.

Health / Health Workers Agree To Suspend Strike by born2lead01: 12:50pm On Nov 15, 2014
Striking health workers underthe aegis of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) have agreed to suspend the strike action they embarked on.

The decision was reached after a conciliatory meeting initiated by the Supervising Minister of Labour and Productivity, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, with the union.

The minister, during the meeting held in Abuja, yesterday, called on JOHESU to suspend the strike in order to safeguard the health of Nigerians.

While noting that the strike has commenced in federal health institutions and agencies with states and local governments slated to join the strike a week later, the meeting agreed to follow due process in addressing the issues in dispute and noted that although there was no written agreement between the Federal Government and JOHESU on the fundamental issue of adjustment of salaries for JOHESU, as it was done for Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the same sector on January 1, 2014.

The right to have the demand considered was however conceded to members of JOHESU.

Thereafter, on the basis of acceptance by both parties, an agreement would be entered into and an implementation process would be specified.

In considering the decisions, the parties noted that time was of the essence while concluding that other issues in dispute would be considered in subsequent meetings as JOHESU promised to suspend the action after the meeting of itsNational Executive Council.

Politics / [UPDATED] Atiku, Tinubu hold closed-door meetings with Obasanjo by born2lead01: 4:55pm On Nov 14, 2014
Punch Newspaper is reporting that Atiku is holding a crucial meeting with Obj in Abeokuta, details have not yet been released.

Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/atiku-obasanjo-hold-closed-door-meeting-in-abeokuta/

UPDATE :

A former vice-president and a presidential aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar and a national leader of APC and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, held separate meetings with the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday.

The meetings were held at Obasanjo’s Hilltop presidential residence in Abeokuta.

With each spending not less than one hour with the former president, it was obvious their visits were not unconnected with the 2015 elections.

Tinubu had paid such a visit earlier in October to Obasanjo, where he said he had come to discuss the state of the nation and his advice on the choice of presidential candidate for the party.

However, on this visit, Tinubu did not grant any press interviews as his convoy drove out of the Obasanjo’s residence around 12.30pm.

Two hours after his departure, Atiku, who had earlier paid a visit to the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, arrived in a convoy, and drove into the former president’s compound.

Briskly he moved into the inner chamber of the building. After a closed -door meeting which lasted for about 45 minutes, he emerged from the chamber with his host, and went to another wing of the building where they had lunch.

He later emerged after 20 minutes and told journalists that he had come to pay respect to his former boss and also discuss the developments in the country with him.

Easy access to internet is making even educated people becoming more stupi.d daily; PCN will not make a pharmacy technician with 3years education a consultant nor will NMCN make a graduate nurse without additional education and training a consultant nurse. Use your brain dude, not every physician in the county is a consultant and same won't go for others.

Foreign Affairs / Here's The 5-sentence Personal Essay That Helped JFK Get Into Harvard by born2lead01: 2:20pm On Nov 13, 2014
Without a doubt, John F. Kennedy is one of Harvard University's most accomplished and impressive graduates.

However, the former POTUS was not the best applicant when he decided he wanted to take up residence in Cambridge, Mass.

He had poor grades from high school, and while he had spent two months at Princeton University before leaving due to an illness, even his own father called him "careless."

In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination,The Washington Post has highlighted many of his school records, including a handwritten Harvard application.

You can check out the digitized originalsat the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

As part of the Harvard application — which at the time was a mere three pages — students were asked to give a "careful answer" to the question "Why do you wish to come to Harvard?" Here's what a young JFK had to say:

The reasons that I have for wishing to go to Harvard are several. I feel that Harvard can give me a better background and a better liberal education than any other university. I have always wanted to go there, as I have felt that it is not just another college, but is a university with something definite to offer.

Then too, I would like to go to the same college as my father. To be a"Harvard man" is an enviable distinction, and one that I sincerely hope I shall attain.
