Health / ECOWAS Staff Dies From Ebola Virus In Nigeria by breezy900: 11:02am On Aug 13, 2014 |
Nigeria has recorded its third number of deaths from the Ebola virus after an ECOWAS official was reported to have died from the virus in the country. The West African regional bloc made the announcement on Tuesday, 12 August, 2014, in an official statement. “The ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) Commission announces with deep regret the passing of a staff member of its Lagos Liaison Office, Mr Jatto Asihu Abdulqudir, aged 36,” it said in a statement. “Mr Abdulqudir, a protocol assistant, was among those who assisted the Liberian delegate to a regional meeting Mr Patrick Sawyer, who died from the Ebola Virus Disease at a Lagos hospital on 25th July 2014.” It was gathered that the late ECOWAS official had been quarantined since Sawyer was confirmed as having Ebola, which haskilled more than 1,000 people since the start of the year , most of them in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. “The Commission wishes to use this opportunity to express its gratitude to Nigerian government authorities and others who contributed to managing the late official while under quarantine,” it added. “The Management of the Commission wishes to commiserate with Mr Abdulqudir’s family and colleagues and prays for the repose of his soul.” It would be recalled that Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday branded Sawyer a “crazyman” for bringing Ebola into Nigeria, despite his sister having died from it and that he reportedly displayed symptoms before getting on a flight to Lagos. Also, a nurse who treated the late Sawyer died of Ebola in Lagos, while tests last weekend confirmed that another nurse had also contracted the virus. As of August 9, the World Health Organization (WHO) said there were 13 probable or suspected cases of Ebola in Nigeria, including two deaths. The Nigerian Ministry of Health had stated last week that there were 10 confirmed cases of Ebola virus in Nigeria, with more than a hundred people being monitored for signs of the disease. According to reports, the late Sawyer was in Nigeria to have attend an ECOWAS meeting and Abdulqudir escorted him to hospital in the Ikoyi neighbourhood from Lagos airport, where he arrived on a flight from Monrovia via the Togolese capital, Lome. It is understood he then returned to the ECOWAS offices on nearby Lagos Island. Investigation revealed that the offices have been closed and disinfected as a precaution while staff have been informed of preventative measures to take, including seeking prompt medical advice in the event of illness. ECOWAS had on Monday, 11 August, 2014, stated that the Ebola virus outbreak threatened West Africa’s social and economic progress and sought the support of all member states and partners to tackle the spread of Ebola. The burial of Prof. Dora Akunyili, former Minister of Information, has been fixed for August 28, the husband of the deceased, Dr Chike Akunyili, confirmed. Akunyili made the announcement on Saturday during a news conference at the family’s country home in Nneogidi village, Agulu in Anaocha local council area of Anambra. According to him, there will be a wake keep at their Enugu residence on Aug. 22, while a night of tributes will be held at Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, on Aug. 25. He said, “her body will leave the National Hospital, Abuja, to the family house at Rudolf Close, Maitama, Abuja, on August 26. “There will be a Church mass at Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church, Abuja, by 10 a.m. on August 26, after which the body leaves Abuja for Enugu by 2.30 p.m. “On August 27, her body arrives Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, for Requiem High Mass by 9 a.m. and arrives Awka by 1 p.m. for Anambra State Government’s activities.’’ Akunyili added that on August 28, Dora’s body would leave Agulu to Nanka and to Madonna Catholic Church, Agulu, for requiem mass by 10.30 a.m., while interment would hold at the family’s Agulu country home by 1.30 p.m. He thanked Nigerians and President Goodluck Jonathan for the concern, love, emotion and moral support to the family. He described his late wife as “an elephant who loved her country even during her travails. “Her love for Nigeria was phenomenal and beyond words; even in her last days when she was very ill, she insisted that she would serve the country with her last breath. “She wanted a home called Nigeria where citizens could live and enjoy.’’ He, however, disclosed that the former Director-General of National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) did not die of cervical cancer as speculated in national newspapers, but died of a rare type of cancer called Endometrian Carcinoma. He said “such cancer spreads fast without you knowing. “We were told that people with such condition will only live for seven months, but with prayers, she survived it for two years and two months until she became ill again. “Although she is dead, I know her spirit hovers around because since her death, everything had been easy and working for me mysteriously.’’ (NAN) for more like www.facebook.com/breezyworld |
TV/Movies / "Though I’m Over 50, Marriage Is Still On My Mind" - Ngozi Nwosu by breezy900: 7:03am On Aug 04, 2014 |
Nigerian Actress Ngozi Nwosu has given a one on one interview to reporters and faced up and answered questions about her intimate life. The light skinned actress was talking to the Nation and also revealed that if the opportunity comes up to get married, she will. Excerpts: You still look really radiant; so, how do you handle male advances? How will you handle it? You have to be cheerful. It’s only a dead meat that doesn’t have admirers. So long as you are in the public eye, men will admire you. You are bound to be admired by the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s for you to say, ‘Thank you! It’s all good! It’s well.’ Who is your ideal man? My ideal man, frankly, is a man that has the fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom. If a man doesn’t have the fear of God, forget it! Every other thing you are doing is rubbish. And between you and me, how many men have the fear of God? What about the physical attributes? I believe in the school of thought that says if you want to eat frog, eat the one that has eggs. I love men who are handsome and brainy. If you are ugly and you’ve got something upstairs, you are welcome. But I don’t want a fine man without brains. Is that the reason you are still single? No, there is no complete being in life. It’s just about knowing what you can put up with and what you cannot. Would you say, ‘Yes, I do’, if you find the right person now? Yes, of course! Why won’t I say, ‘Yes, I do’? You are in your 50s; so, what are your wishes? My desire is that the Lord should keep me and the usefulness that He has given me should not depart from me; that God should grant me the wisdom to know Him better and that He should always guide my footsteps. Politics / You Can Win Elections By Luck, But You Cannot Rule By Luck - Kwankwaso by breezy900: 6:44am On Aug 04, 2014 |
Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said Nigeria needs strong leadership to overcome its security challenges and not someone who relies on luck to rule. “What the President must realise is that nobody can run a country by luck. You can win election by luck, but you cannot be lucky all the time. So Goodluck as his name implies should look beyond luck in handling the affairs of this country. What Nigeria requires is a strong leadership that will stop all this nonsense or in the alternative, negotiate from the point of strength with the insurgents,” Kwankwaso said. Kwankwaso said this yesterday, while speaking with reporters at his office. He advised the presidency to reduce the level of hatred and bitterness among Nigerians, if the government was actually interested in resolving the problem of insecurity. According to him, the real cause of insecurity in the country is bad leadership being experienced in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -led government, noting that the inability of President Jonathan to tackle the issue of insurgency in the North and insecurity in other parts of the country has exposed Jonathan’s incompetence to preside over the affairs of Nigeria. “Now, they are just using propaganda. Look at the issue of the abduction of Chibok girls. The schoolgirls have been in captivity and they kept arguing —where are the names, who are they, where are the photographs; they didn’t believe that over 200 children were abducted. Haba! Even if it is 20 tortoise or goats! Won’t you look for them? One of the reasons I love this country is that we have people of integrity in all the regions, in all the states like my former colleague, former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili. “This is somebody who worked at the World Bank, but now she has devoted her time to the cause of these girls. She is not from this part of the country, but she felt she had to take the bull by the horns and that is what we are seeing in developed countries — fight injustice, save people, help them, if you have the opportunity to do so. They sent some hawks to go and stop the protesters. The other day, I went to Abuja, I saw an advertisement, while Ezekwesili was saying ‘BringBackOurGirls’, some people were saying ‘vote for us, we want to stay and maintain the status quo; look at my photograph, I am smiling.’ And they don’t know time is of essence. “At the moment, the country is in a critical situation, and if this madness is not stopped and if it is allowed to degenerate, and becomes the order of the day, whereby innocent people are being killed every day, then something is wrong with the leadership. “What Nigeria requires now is a strong leadership that can effectively tackle the insurgency in the North-East, and other topical security challenges,” he said. Kwankwaso then suggested that one major way to restore normalcy in the northern part of the country was to draw out a Marshal Plan for the region, and urged Jonathan to stamp his feet as the Commander –In- Chief of the Armed Forces, to tackle this security issue. The governor challenged the President to think seriously about the statement made by General T.Y Danjuma, (rtd), who suggested that President Jonathan lead Nigerians to Sambisa Forest to rescue the abducted Chibok girls. Travel / EBOLA OUTBREAK: Ghana Bans Flights From Nigeria And Other West African Countries by breezy900: 11:21am On Aug 02, 2014 |
Following the death of a Liberian victim of the deadly Ebola virus in the country, Ghana has banned flights from Nigeria and other West African countries, according to CajnewsAfrica The Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company, Charles Asare, said it was part of elaborate emergency measures the authorities were implementing to prevent the virus from spreading into the West African country. Also, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Liberian refugees who are still at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in the country. Ever since its outbreak, the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of over 600 victims in the West African sub-region. Ghana also bans flight from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ghana’s Health Ministry also announced that efforts were underway to establish Ebola treatment centres across the country. The country’s Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, advised Ghanaians to be patient because government was doing its best to protect the citizens. “It is worth bearing in mind that preparedness is not an event but a process,” he said. Though a suspected fever case which was reported at a clinic in Ghana was negative, Ghanaians have expressed fear about the possible spread of the disease in the country due to closeness to the four countries where deaths have been recorded. Governments in the sub- region are putting in place stringent measures to prevent the further spread of the disease. According to the health minister, the disease surveillance system in Ghana has been placed on “high alert through intensification of viral haemorrhagic fever surveillance, the field officers are on the alert to pick, package and transport specimens to the lab for confirmation.” The respective health officers at Ghana’s ports have been given orientation in the detection of cases at points of entry. “We have activated a system for screening all passengers especially from countries that have recorded cases,” Agyeman-Mensah added. The health minister gave the assurance that his outfit was monitoring the progression of the Ebola disease in West African nations. But the Federal Government had said that there was no outbreak. The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Fan Ndubouke, said that the agency was not aware of such a development. He said, “We are not aware of any such thing, we have confirmed from Arik Air and Aero Contractors which are the two airlines that fly to Ghana from Nigeria, and Arik has confirmed to us that they haven’t received such notice. “We are still trying to get Aero to confirm, but I can tell you that from NCAA’s angle, there is nothing like that.” The Spokesman, Aero Contractors, Mr. Simon Tunba, told our correspondent that Aero had not heard anything like that. “We have not heard anything concerning such, and have not seen any letter to that effect.” Efforts to reach Arik for comments could not yield as at press time. |
Sports / 109,000 Sell-out Crowd To Watch Manchester United Vs Real Madrid by breezy900: 7:14am On Aug 02, 2014 |
When two of the greatest football clubs in the world meet, a mammoth crowd is often expected to pay attention. Manchester United and Real Madrid sold out all 109,000 tickets for their pre-season friendly in Michigan on Saturday. Expectedly so, the crowd will be the biggest ever gathered to watch a football match in the US. The record was previously held by a friendly between Barcelona v LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in 2009, which got 93,137 in attendance. An excited Wayne Rooney described the support in the US as great and the ticket sales, incredible. “It’s fantastic. The fanbase over here is great and it’s two massive clubs, two of the biggest clubs in the world, so to sell that many tickets for a pre-season match is incredible. A club with rich history, United has played before a bigger crowd, with 120,000 people present to watch a European Cup semi-final which held in Bernabeu in April 1957 . This will be the largest attendance they have played for since then. One of the players that might have caught the eyes of the fans in the US, Cristiano Ronaldo is sadly not playing the game. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said of his forward: “Ronaldo has been working individually, separate from the team, and he is continuing to work. “We will not put him out tomorrow, as he has not trained with the full squad. |

Politics / Family, Residents Accuse Police Of Torturing Youth To Death by breezy900: 7:05pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
The family of a 28-year-old Olayode Adeoye, who died after policemen from the Elere Division, Orile Agege, Lagos raided Ajayi Igbe Street and detained him with two others have accused the police of torturing him to death. Saturday PUNCH learnt that Adeoye and three friends were having a drink at a bar on Ajayi Igbe Street around 11am on Thursday when the police team in a commercial bus came to arrest them. “But we all came out to ask the policemen who numbered about six what the men had done wrong, they gave no answer,” a resident of the street told our correspondent Our correspondent visited the street on Friday, where residents who gathered in groups discussing the incident in anger said they had earlier marched in protest to the Elere Police Division, but were dispersed with gunshots. An elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Tajuden Oyelola, said he had still not been able to digest why the police would beat Adeoye to death. “Those who were there when they were arrested and those who saw him when he was taken to the hospital said he was tortured. I am still in shock. How could any human being do that to another human being?” A resident, Kafilat Oyenusi said the men were arrested in her sister’s bar. Oyenusi said, “These men were having a drink like any other person. We all know them as easy going men on the street. When the police took the men away, they came back about one hour later for my sister. We asked why they came to take my sister away but one of the policemen threatened to shoot us. “We followed them to the station and that was where we learnt that the men had actually admitted to being ‘Yahoo boys’ (a Nigerian term for Internet fraudsters). The boys said the policemen asked them to bail themselves with N500, 000 but they said they could only pay N40, 000. That was when the policemen began to beat them. We later left the place hoping that we would come back in the evening. “But we got a report around 4pm that Olayode had slumped in the cell and was taken to the hospital. By 1am this morning (Friday), he was dead.” The landlord of the deceased said even though he was not aware that the men were Internet fraudsters, he was aware they admitted that much to the police and saw no reason why they should have been tortured. “The three boys were easy going men. The police actually came to search their apartment and took away their laptops,” he said. Another resident told our correspondent that the three men were his friends and that another friend of theirs who went to the police station was also detained. “When he was detained, he told us that they were beaten and Olayode was actually strung up before he collapsed and they asked him to take Olayode to the All Souls Infirmary, where he died.” At the hospital which was few metres from the police station, a doctor said they had nothing to say as it was a police matter. The divisional police officer, Mr. Philip Eze, said the matter was being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department and he could not comment since he was not the police spokesperson. But a police officer, who was aware of the case at the station said under condition of anonymity that the matter did not happen as the residents alleged. www.breezyworld.tk/forum/showtopic.php?id=603 |

Politics / Boko Haram : We Need More Brave Men - Gen Minimah by breezy900: 1:04pm On Jul 19, 2014 |
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt- Gen. KTJ Minimah has come out and surprised the general public and admitted that some of his men openly display acts of cowardice and indiscipline in their ongoing war with terrorist group Boko Haram. In a new communiqué issued through the Defence Headquarters twitter account after its quarterly conference of the COAS ended, Minimah said: “the rising acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct by troops was unbecoming and charged Commanders at all levels to put a stop to it as the Nigerian Army was a professional organization.” Gen-Minimah also talked about the mutiny that occurred in Borno capital Maiduguri, and said: “A few issues needs to be urgently addressed that have caught my attention in recent weeks. Principal among these is the rising acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct by troops. In this regard, the recent mutinous act in Maiduguri and reported destruction of public property in Lagos readily comes to mind. As a professional army, the conduct of our troops must be above board at all times” Blaming it on the fact that most people, who joined the military in recent times, do so out of the need for employment and not passion for military service, Minimah said, “Desertion is part of warfare. We must accept that since the era of the Cartagena wars, soldiers had deserted from battle field. In our own case, we are doing recruitment now and we are also receiving presentations from across the country, from people who want their wards to be enlisted in the army”. “But we need to have a thorough recruitment because mind you, there is high level of unemployment on ground; most people want jobs and if that job means joining the army fine. It is a source of employment. However, when the reality of the military service comes, he drops his riffles. So desertion will continue to be there. We had desertion in ECOMOG; in the Nigerian Civil war and now it will continue to be there”. “Also, acts of indiscipline will continue to be there but when they are caught, they are investigated and when they are found questionable they will face the Court-Martial”. “Like I said, in a few months time, the war will be over. But I cannot give you a clear calendar date because this is war on terrorism. It cannot be determined in terms of concrete date”. Klose breaks Ronaldo record The 36-year-old has written a new piece of football history after surpassing the Brazil legend's tally of 15 World Cup goals Miroslav Klosehas become the top goalscorer in World Cup history after scoring in Germany'ssemi-final against Brazil on Tuesday. The 36-year-old struck in the first half against the host nation, tapping home from point-blank range after Julio Cesar had denied him at the first attempt. Name | Goals Miroslav Klose |16 Ronaldo | 15 Gerd Muller |14 Just Fontaine |13 Pele |12 Sandor Kocsis | 11 Jurgen Klinsmann | 11 Helmut Rahn | 10 Gary Lineker|10 Gabriel Batistuta |10 Since his last World Cup in 2006, Ronaldo's record tally of 15 goals in the competition had remained untouched, but Klose has now surpassed that tally at last in his fourth tournament. The Lazio striker netted five goals at the 2002 World Cup, five times four years later, four in 2010 and now twice during this summer's showpiece. Ronaldo amassed his strikes across three tournaments, in 1998, 2002 and 2006 - and lifted the famous trophy once along the way, 12 years ago this summer. Klose, 36, started the tournament level on goals with compatriot, Gerd Muller, who starred in the 1970 and 1974 tournaments and boasts an incredible ratio of 1.08 goals per World Cup games. Klose, who was born in Poland, made his Germany debut as a substitute on March 24, 2011 and marked the occasion with a goal. He struck again against Greece just four days later - despite being afforded just 33 minutes over the course of his first two international outings - and the goals just never stopped coming, particularly in major tournaments. http://www.breezyworld.tk/forum/showtopic.php?id=579 |
