They could be speaking from experience or long held tradition of doing things. However, in research there are basically 3 knowledge areas to consider before any knowledge could be acceptable to be translated into practice; experience of the professional, best practice from reviewed sources and actual works (trails) that have performed under replicable condition.

Therefore, additional information is needed from reviewed sources to draw conclusion on whether the practice is backed by informed knowledge, rather than tradition.
