The Kogi State Police Command has denied report by Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi west district at the National Assembly, Thursday, that unknown gunmen in uniform (police,SARS and military) fired gun shots at the vehicle just as its asked the Senator and the people in his convoy to report to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Lokoja.


Senator Dino Melaye had tweeted that he thanked God for sparing his life once again as over 20 bullets holes were on his jeep and alleging that a combination of police, SARS and military were the one responsible for the bullets holes.

But the Kogi State Police Command in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, DSP William Ovye Aya, said that it was saddening that Senator Dino could turn around the issue misleading and covering up the heinous crime committed by his hired aides who launched a lethal attack on police officers in the course of their normal duty.

Putting the records straight the Kogi Police said that on ‘Thursday at about 1530hours, a team of policemen from the Command was on a routine Anti – Robbery/Kidnapping patrol along Aiyetoro Gbede – Mopa Road and during the patrol, and as it is often the practice, the team pinned down at a point at Iyah Gbede Junction, where they were observing the highway and occasionally conducting Stop and Search.

‘It was in this process a long convoy of vehicles coming from Mopa towards Aiyetoro Gbede approached the Point.

‘Officers of the Command at the Point flagged down the convoy. While the lead vehicle, a Toyota Hilux van, which was later discovered to be conveying officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, stopped to introduce themselves, other vehicles in the convoy dangerously zoomed off without regards for the safety of the officers on ground.

The Police further said that ‘surprisingly, some plain clothed armed men, occupying a white Toyota Hilux van, without registration numbers, without provocation fired gunshots at the officers of the Anti-Robbery /Kidnapping Patrol Team.

‘One of the officers, a Sergeant, was hit by bullet on the right part of his chest as a result of which he sustained grievous injury.

‘The Officer is currently lying critically ill in the hospital where he has undergone a live threatening and currently recuperating.

‘Expectedly, the policemen in self defense responded by firing back to repel the unexpected attack. Vehicles in the convoy nevertheless, drove away from the scene.



‘It was not until the officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps were questioned that it was realized that the convoy was that of Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye.


The police said it was ‘rather unfortunate that Senator Dino could after this dastardly act by his aides, be going around with armed men, unknown to the Command who could launch such a lethal attack on police officers in the course of their normal duty. It is more saddening that the Senator could turn around to issue misleading statements to cover up the heinous crime committed by his hired aides.

‘While, the command has instituted a high powered investigation panel into the incident Distinguished Senator Melaye is hereby advised to report with people in his convoy to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Lokoja to assist in the investigation’

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed August 11 for Bauchi South senatorial by-election. The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who announced this yesterday during a stakeholders meeting at the INEC office in Bauchi, said the commission received a formal communication from the National Assembly on July 13, declaring a vacancy in the Bauchi South senatorial district by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki. He said by the action of the Senate, based on Section 76 Subsection 2 and Section 25 Subsection 2 of the Electoral Act, INEC was mandated to conduct an election within 30 days after receiving the letter from National Assembly.

THE Senate, yesterday, witnessed a rowdy session, following complaints of alleged lopsided appointments into federal boards and parastatals by President Muhammadu Buhari. .

For more than half an hour, the hallowed chamber was stormy over alleged bias by President Buhari in his federal appointments, just as he was accused of being biased in favour of northerners, particularly Katsina State, his home state. With the shouting session, it became very clear that there was sharp division between the Southern and Northern senators. Talks in the chamber from some northern senators were that Buhari had been fair to all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe and religion. Subsequently, the Senate mandated its Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs, led by Senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura (APC, Zamfara North), to probe all appointments of the President as well as establish the alleged lopsidedness. The committee, which was asked to carry out a holistic investigation into the appointments, taking into cognisance, adherence to federal character principle, rule of law, among others, will submit its report on Tuesday at plenary. Trouble started when Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, who presided, read a letter from President Buhari, asking the Senate to screen and confirm appointments into the board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA. In the letter, which was read on the floor of the Senate by Saraki, President Buhari asked the Senate to confirm former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Tunde Lemo, as chairman of FERMA; Nurudeen Abdulrahman Rafindafi as Managing Director; Buba Silas Abdullahi; Babangana Mohammed Aji; Shehu Usman Abdullahi; Loretta Ngozichukwu Aniagolu; Mujaidu Stanley Dako and Vincent Oladapo Kolawale as executive directors. Immediately the Senate President read the letter, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu (PDP, Enugu West), raised a point of order to challenge the appointments, stressing that most of the appointments of the current administration were not in line with the Federal Character Principle. Ekweremadu read Section 14(3) of 1999 Constitution as amended to buttress his argument. Ekweremadu, who picked holes in the appointment of chairmen of boards without recourse to federal character principle, with a particular zone of the country, the South East being neglected and marginalised, then urged the Senate to put on hold the confirmation process. He also called for investigation into the alleged lopsided appointments, adding that he was not against any person, but the manner one part of the country had been so favoured. Soon after Ekweremadu rounded off his remarks, the leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe North), who also relied on a point of order, however, countered the Deputy Senate President’s allegation, insisting that Ekweremadu did not look at the bigger picture before jumping into such conclusions. Senator Lawan, who urged Ekweremadu to remove his mind from the narrow picture, however, asked him to look at all other appointments in other agencies before alleging that the Federal Character Principle was not followed in the appointments. Supporting Ekweremadu, Senator Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu North), aligned himself with his argument that the appointments of the current administration had been so lopsided, favouring a particular region of the country At this point, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while trying to calm the situation, pointed out that observations by the lawmakers could only be considered as personal to those raising them. He, however, mandated the committee on Federal Character to carry out a comprehensive investigation on the appointments of President Buhari, adding that when the committee submits its report, senators could then raise allegations, if it was established that there was need to do so. Even with Saraki’s intervention, the senators were not persuaded, but continued with their arguments over the appointments. While some backed Ekweremadu’s observation, others disagreed. While Saraki was trying to calm frayed nerves of the senators during the rowdy session, Senator Obinna Ogba, PDP, Ebonyi Central, raised a point of Order still on the issue of lopsidedness in the appointments by the President. Ogba pointed out that his state, Ebonyi, was shortchanged in appointments, adding, “Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, we cannot continue on this nomination. If you look at this, Ebony State’s slot is completely missing.” While he was still speaking, there were moves by other senators to stop him, but he shouted at them, saying “ are you the ones presiding, you cannot stop me from speaking.” Another round of heated argument reared its head when the Senate president moved to begin the confirmation of the appointment of chairman and commissioners of the Federal Civil Service Commission when Mao Ohuabunwa,PDP, Abia North, raised a point of order, insisting that the Senate should suspend the consideration. While speaking, some senators tried to stop him, but he told them the they do not have the monopoly to shout as he could also do that if the need arose. Senator Ohuabunwa’s argument was that since the Senate had agreed to investigate all the appointments of the current administration, the confirmation should be stepped down until the Committee on Federal Character submits its report. The Senate president, however, overruled him, saying the screening should continue, pending when the Committee on Federal Character submits its report. He added that yesterday’s consideration of the Senate was not the final confirmation of the nominees, maintaining that before the appointees were confirmed, the Senate would have received the report of the Characters’ committee. Saraki said: “We are just speculating, we are on the same page. Let us first get a document from Federal Character then we can take action. ‘’If the Federal Character Committee’s reports suggests that the Deputy President of the Senate is right, then we suspend the consideration.” He, however, upheld that the screening of the Civil Service Commission’s appointees be continued and directed the Committee on Federal Character to conclude it investigation and report back to the Senate on Tuesday.

The Principal of Pacific Comprehensive College, Shasha, Lagos, Mr. Andrew Mekwunye, has warned that government at all levels in Nigeria is no longer in a position to provide quality education for the nation’s children.

Speaking during the valedictory service for the 2017/2018 set of graduating pupils of the school, held at the college premises last Saturday, Mekwunye noted that the Federal Government and the states were under pressure to meet the many demands of the people, including the provision of quality basic education, but they lacked the resources to do so.


He said, “There is no short cut to quality education. But the truth is that, in Nigeria, government is longer in a position to provide quality education because of the increasing population and other competing needs. Education is not the only basic need of the people; pipe borne water, electricity, roads, housing and health facilities also need government attention.

“Increasing participation of private individuals and companies must be encouraged, if there must be a way out. Quality and functional education is indispensible to true literacy.”

Mekwunye also said that more parents had become aware of the fact that private educators were crucial to the attainment of quality and functional education, but their aspirations were being cut short by the rising costs of running private schools.

He noted that the national curriculum for primary and secondary schools had failed to explain why children should go to school, adding that the use of a non- functional curriculum was partly responsible for the rise in social, educational and economic crises afflicting the country.


The principal urged the 36 graduating pupils of the college to be the best in their chosen professions by updating their knowledge through collaborations, networking, seminars, workshops, field trips and others.

In his address, the Chairman, Board of Trustee of Pacific Group of Schools, Mr. Remi Omosowon, said the school would continue to implement programmes that deliver internationally integrated curricula to make the pupils globally competitive.

He said, “These enrichment programmes align very well with the 21st century skills that students need to be college or work ready in the ever changing dynamic world of the information age and the knowledge economy that we live in.’’ Omosowon also said that the school had equipped the graduands to succeed in whatever they chose to do and to become change agents capable of impact the rest of the world positively.

The Guest Speaker and Managing Director, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Consult, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, said that the goal of education, which he described as the advancement of knowledge and dissemination of truth, could only be effectively promoted through quality education.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again attacked the Federal Government, stating that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is incompetent and incapable of addressing the killings and poverty in the country.

He argued that the administration was confused and had reached the end of its tether while the nation was being left perilously to drift.
Instead of proffering solutions, the former leader said the government had been wringing its hands and “giving one unrighteous and unacceptable justification after the other.”

Obasanjo said this in a letter read on his behalf at a one-day national summit on insecurity and killings in Nigeria convened by the Northern Elders Forum, Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Pan Niger Delta Forum on Wednesday in Abuja.

The ex-President, who was represented by a former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, noted that Buhari was, by his action and inaction, doing a lot of harm to the nation’s commonwealth and heritage.
In the letter which was addressed to the NEF Chairman, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, the retired general recalled the discussion he had with the elder statesman about the danger to the nation’s democracy when he hosted him (Ango) in Abeokuta some weeks ago.

Obasanjo said, “When you kindly paid me a visit a couple of weeks ago, we deliberated on the danger to our democracy, our common identity, our commonality of purpose, our dream and our unity in diversity.

“We lamented the harm that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, by his action and inaction, has done and is doing to our commonwealth and our common heritage.”

The Owu chief added that the nation had never been so divided along religious and regional lines as being witnessed today.
“The obvious indication is that the government is seemingly confused and has got to the end of its tether and the nation is being left divisively and perilously to drift.
Earlier last week, I noted in a speech some undesirable elements being allowed and being introduced to our democracy by this administration. If these are not stopped, they could be the death knell of our democracy,” he stressed.

The elder statesman, however, expressed hope that in spite of the unfortunate situation created by the government, his consultations with people had given him hope.

“People are not ready to give up in despair and leave their fate and their present and future in the hands of inept leadership for their lives to be ruined. I see common concern across the nation irrespective of tribe, religion, language and social standing that the situation should be retrieved and the nation should be saved,” he stated.

The former President admonished the elders to continue with the dialogue which he said was necessary to clear misgivings, misunderstanding, misperception, misrepresentation, erroneous beliefs and outdated ideas and concepts.
