ABUJA – Dissatisfied by what they termed “total abandonment and neglect by the Federal government”, victims of bomb blasts that occurred ‎in various parts of Northern Nigerian, yesterday, dragged the government before the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC.
‎In a petition they sent to the Commission, the group, said they have been “neglected and abandoned by the Federal Government as it has failed to keep to its promise of taking care of our medical bills, a promise made by the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan at every visit he made to the scenes of the blasts and to the hospitals to visit victims of the bomb blasts.”
They decried that many of them lost their lives ‎as a result of lack concern on the part of the government.
“Many underwent surgical operations in other hospitals after the initial hospitals at which they were hospitalized withdrew from handling their cases”, they added.
The petition was signed ‎on behalf of other victims by one Mr Kayode Olatunji.
According to them, ‎ “Many who initially survived the bombing died months later as they could no longer cope with the exorbitant medical bills.
‎The victims said they recorded various degrees of injuries from bomb blasts which occurred at the Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Suleja, Niger State, United Nations Building in Abuja, Nyanyan ‎ motor park among others.
‎”We are citizens of Nigeria who should enjoy safety and security of our lives like other citizens, so we deserve to be given proper attention.
“We therefore write to solicit for help from their human rights commission to cause the Federal Government to its pledges for our treatment.”
Responding to the petition, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Commission, Dr Chidi Odinkalu assured the victims that the Federal Government remained committed to their welfare.
He explained that government’s commitment informed the creation of the Victim Support Fund.
He therefore advised the victims to come together and to reach out to other victims so that they could present a united front.
‎Odinkalu advised the victims to compile all necessary records including medical reports and evidence of bills paid, to enable the commission makes the necessary recommendations.
He said the commission was ready to work with the victims to table their grievances before appropriate authorities.
‎Odinkalu noted that there was no protocol to manage victims of bomb blasts adding that this was inexcusable.
He made a case for a policy establishing a protocol to manage victims of bomb blasts.
The victims said that most of them had mortgaged their inheritance and sold their properties to settle their medical expenses.
“Some have dropped out of schools and some are still on the sick bed,” they added.

Former beauty queen Omowunmi Akinnifesi celebrated her birthday on Dec. 4th at the National Orthopedic Special Training School Igbobi, Lagos State, where she partied with children that are autistic and mentally challenged. Omowunmi shared gifts including drawing books, color pencil, sweets, treats, biscuits, bubble toys and crayons and lots of food and drinks to the children.

Omowunmi later paid a courtesy visit to Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, Commissioner for Education, Lagos State, to talk to her concerning the issues the Orthopedic school had raised about their needs which the Commissioner promised to take into serious consideration.

World football governing body, FIFA, has cleared former Swiss U-20 international, Steven Archibong Effiong Ukoh, to play for the Super Eagles at senior level. The versatile midfielder, born on June 19, 1991 to Nigerian parents in Berne, Switzerland, currently plays for Biel-Bienne FC in the European country but has now switched his nationality to Nigerian, to enable him play for Super Eagles.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck the suit filed by Peoples Democratic Party seeking an order sacking the four sitting governors who defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress.
The defectors are Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).
The name of one other affected governors, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, had been removed from the suit after he was impeached.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole, in a ruling on Friday, struck out the suit against the governors on the grounds that the originating processes filed by the PDP to initiate the suit were invalid.
‎
The court upheld the arguments of the plaintiff that the originating processes were wrongly issued and served on the defendants.
Justice Kolawole held that failure of the plaintiff to seek court’s leave to serve the governors through substituted means by publication in the July 3, 2014 edition of This Day newspaper contravened provisions of Section 96 of Sheriff and Civil Processes Act.
He also held that absence of endorsement on the processes violated Section 97 of the same law.
He held that irregularities in service of a process on a party could only be ignored if such party decided to wave his rights.
The PDP had in December 2011, sued the governors and the Independent National Electoral Commission, asking the court to declare the defecting governors’ seats vacant.
They also asked the court to compel INEC to conduct fresh elections for their replacement.
The plaintiff had, upon an order of court, served the governors with the originating processes through a wrong address of the APC.
The governors, had through their respective lawyers, faulted the service, forcing the court to set the service aside.
The PDP, on June 27, again obtained an ex-parte order for substituted service of the originating processes through newspaper publication, which it published on July 3 in Thisday newspapers.
The defendants also faulted the procedure adopted by the PDP in serving them, arguing among others, that the plaintiff failed to first obtain the leave of the court to serve through substituted means.
They also argued that the originating processes were not endorsed as required under the Sheriff and Civil Processes Act.
Justice Kolawole on Friday upheld the governors’ argument that the originating processes, issued in the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, and meant for service outside jurisdiction ought to be endorsed as required under Section 97 of the SCPA.
He held that the plaintiff acted in violation of the provision of Section 96 of the SCPA as it ought to have applied for and obtained the court’s leave before engaging in substituted service.
The judge rejected the argument by the lawyer to the PDP, Alex Iziyon (SAN), to the effect that the governors could be served through their new party’s address.
Justice Kolawole held that it was “preposterous, audacious and breathtaking” for the plaintiff to argue that the defendants, sued individually in personal capacity, could be served through the office of the party to which they defected to.
He further held that, having been described as governors of Rivers, Kano and Kwara states, who carried out most of their functions in their states’ capitals, it was wrong to assume, as argued by the plaintiff, that they reside or operate from the APC headquarters in Abuja.
The judge also held that since APC was not a party in the suit, which was meant to sack the governors, it was wrong to provide the APC’s address as the place where the governors could be served.
‎”This suit is struck out as this originating summons has been declared invalid,” the judge held.‎

The police in Owerri, the Imo state capital successfully defused two Improvised Explosive device IED found at the lobby of a popular eatery on Wednesday December 10th.

Speaking on the incident, the state's police commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali, said a distress call was put across to the command by the manager of the eatery and a bomb squad was immediately drafted to the scene where the bomb was immediately defused. He appealed to members of the public to always come forward with information whenever anything odd is noticed
"I want to thank the Imolites(Imo state citizens) for given us this information on time because if not it could have caused a lot of damage. Only God knows how many lives would have been lost, the same thing with property" he said.
