PoliticsKwara Community Groans Over Water Scarcity by bruno419(op): 12:37pm On Dec 09, 2014
Residents of Okuta in the Baruten local government area of Kwara State on Tuesday cried out for help over the perennial water shortage in the border community.

A cross-section of the people who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria urged governments at all levels to urgently alleviate their plight of lack of adequate potable water supply in the community.

Malam Aliyu Umar, the Gunubero of Okuta, told the NAN that the waterworks in the community had not been operated in the last three years.

This, according to the traditional ruler, is due to its network of pipes, which has gone bad.

“Our major problem here is the distribution network, which has gone bad. The pipes have become broken in the last three years and nothing has been done about restoring the network.

“There is need for new pipes to be laid and for the distribution network to be extended to other areas that were not covered in the past, because of the rapid growth of the town”, he said.

The Gunubero said that the present sources of water in the community were through wells, hand pumps and one motorised borehole, which he said, were not adequate for the town’s population.

“We are seriously facing the problem of perennial water shortage. It has started now and if you come here by January, you will pity our situation,” he told NAN.

Umar explained that shortage of water was peculiar to Okuta than its other neighbouring communities in the local government.

He appealed for urgent assistance from government and bemoaned how a dam project by the Federal Government through the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, which was sited in the community was later diverted to another community, a few years ago.

Also speaking on the issue, Mrs Hassanat Abubakar, a housewife, explained how women in the border area suffered to get water for domestic use, once the dry season sets in.

She pleaded with the government to assist in the provision of adequate water supply to the area, to ease the difficulties faced by women and children in sourcing for water.

An official of the Kwara Water Works Scheme in the town, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said that poor power supply compelled the unit to stop work about three years ago.

He added that the situation had now been compounded by the rusty distribution pipe network, as well as the need to expand the network, following the growing population of the town.

The source, however, declined to provide estimates required to restore full operations at the facility.

Okuta, with an estimated population of over 100, 000 persons, is the largest town in the Baruten local government area of Kwara State.

Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), one of the leading presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has refuted insinuations that he is a religious fundamentalist.

He made the point in an exclusive interview with THISDAY Board of Editors over the weekend.

While admitting that he is a “practicing muslim”, the former Head of State argued that his career background and general orientation has never indicated a proclivity for religious intolerance or religious obsession.

According to him, “ I cannot disown my religion because of the accusations. People I worked with for more than twenty years and I rose from Second Lieutenant to General. All the commands and staff that I worked with along the line, most of my associates were Christians. For example, when I moved into Maiduguri to clear the Chadians, my number two man then was Ugwoke, a Christian”.

Buhari who said he has not been to Mecca in the last 12 years wondered why the tag of religious fanaticism sticks around him.

According to him ever since he joined partisan politics, his closest allies have been Christians.

Hear him: I joined partisan politics in 2002. By 2003, there were governors, there were senators, but I got the (presidential) ticket. I picked late Chuba Okadigbo. He was a Roman Catholic and an Igbo. And he was brought up politically by Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. We were rigged out.

“In 2007, I picked Chief Umeh Ezeoke, he was an Igbo and a Roman Catholic. Again, we were rigged out. In 2011, I picked Tunde Bakare, a pastor. So how more Christian do you want me to go in picking a running mate?, he asked rhetorically, adding that, “I never picked a Muslim as a running mate?”

Speaking on corruption, the former Head of State explained that his fierce approach in dealing with corruption while as a military Head of State has to change, lamenting that a lot of the nation’s institutions have been compromised. He however stressed that he will not tolerate corruption in office, but that he would allow existing cases already in the judiciary to run their full courses.

More of the interview are in the Special Interview pull out.

Also speaking in an exclusive interview with THISDAY, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, another frontline presidential aspirant in the APC, noted that the insurgency in Nigeria has dragged on because the military has not been fully equipped to combat the terrorism menace.
He said as a stop-gap measure, he supports the setting up of local militia to tackle the insurgency, arguing that, “After all, when the US realised that they couldn’t win the war in Iraq, they also resorted to using local militia help them fight their enemies in Iraq and it is still working.”

Speaking with so much confidence of his capacity, Atiku urged Nigerians not to wish him good luck, but to wish him success.

Asked if he has the capacity to fight corruption given his enormous and wide ranging business interests, Atiku insisted that he was strongly disposed to the fight against corruption having supported the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while in office, adding that his business concerns will not necessarily have to do business with government.

He argues that all that is needed to toughen the war against corruption is to strengthen the institutions of government like the Police, the judiciary, the EFCC, ICPC etc.

Speaking on his readiness for the presidential task, Atiku explained that he has a blue print of what to do stressing that the APC offers Nigerians the prime opportunity to have a change of government.

“I believe the APC offers a better and well articulated direction of where Nigeria should be heading to. The PDP is in shambles as well as their manifesto and what they want to do really. So I believe Nigerians have got the opportunity to vote for change and I have always looked forward to a two-party system for this country.”

By Dapo Akinrefon
A Lagos State governorship aspirant, Mr.
Babatunde Gbadamosi, popularly known as BOG,
caused a stir at the Lagos State Peoples
Democratic Party governorship primary when he
arrived the venue in a bulletproof vest.
Gbadamosi, while addressing journalists at the
venue, said he wore the vest in order to protect
himself from being hit by a stray bullet following
the violence that erupted earlier in the day.
Although the party leadership had said the
violence was caused by thugs loyal to the
opposition party, Gbadamosi said the real
perpetrators of the violence were from within
the PDP.
Gbadamosi said the violence was part of a ploy
to intimidate the almost 1000 delegates that
have converged on the venue.
He said, “I am wearing the bulletproof vest
because I am afraid of being shot at but I am
urging all my supporters to come and should not
be intimidated.”There is fear of intimidation and
some people in the party want to intimidate the
delegates but we will ensure that everyone will
vote fearlessly and as it pleases them.”
He said it was unfortunate that the party
leadership was supporting an aspirant (Jimi
Agbaje).
When asked if he was confident of winning, he
said, “Would I have paid over N11m to purchase
the form if I was not confident?”

PoliticsConfusion As Thugs Threaten Lagos PDP Gov Primary by bruno419(op): 2:44pm On Dec 08, 2014
Confusion reigned supreme at the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary in Lagos on Monday as some thugs were at the brink of a major clash, forcing to police to disperse them with gunshots.

The police fired canisters of tear gas and gunshots to disperse the thugs, who besieged the roads, singing solidarity songs.

The gun hots caused panic as many delegates, who had yet to be accredited, scampered for safety.

One of the thugs was arrested by the police.

Some of the delegates, who spoke to our correspondent, were worried that they had yet to be accredited.

Our correspondent overheard many of them decrying the violence.

Some of them expressed displeasure over the late start, wondering if the primary would hold.

According to plans, voting was supposed to have started by 2pm but as of press time(2.11 pm), the delegates and journalists were still
outside the venue, waiting to be accredited.

Peace has , however, been restored as more security had been beefed up around the area.

PDP spokesman, Gani Taofik, assured the people that everything was under control, noting that the primary would hold.
